Getting Windows 8.1 on my 16GB replacement SSD

On my new HP Pavilion, I have a 2TB hard drive and a 16GB (SanDisk) SSD.My original 16GB SSD failed, and I received a replacement from HP. I installed the new SSD with no problem. However, I believe that the replacement SSD is empty. I understand the OS should be installed on it, so that the system boots more qwickly.I have set up my 2TB drive with apps and files, and it works fine, since the installation of Windows 8.1 is on it.If the function of the 16GB SSD is to contain the OS and for the system to boot from it (so that it boots more quickly), I need help in getting the OS on the small drive.I am afraid that if I run the System Recovery DVDs that I'll erase all of the work I've done on my 2TB drive, and that I'll have to reinstall apps, files, etc. I appreciate any assistance you cvan provide. Thank you,Tim_Paul

Hi again Tim_Paul, Thank you for the quick reply! To answer your first question, I recommend entering the BIOS when the computer first boots up and check to see if the SSD is visible from a list of bootable drives. If it is, you do not need to worry about initializing the drive, as the computer will recognize it as a viable drive to boot from. Once the 2TB hard drive is removed, and if you can see the SSD in the BIOS, you can recover your system by following the steps in this document on Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). To anwser your second question, you will not need to remove the hard drive with all of your files and apps, as it will be catalogued in the BIOS as a secondary drive. I did find out, however, that the system requirements for Windows 10 needs a 16GB hard drive for the 32-bit version, and 20GB for the 64-bit. With this being said, there may not be enough space on your SSD to effectively run the minimum requirements for Windows 10. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • HDD failure, I'd like to know how to get Windows 7 back on it.

Hello everyone, I've had a HDD issue lately, but before I move on to describe my issue, here are the specs of my notebook:
    HP Pavilion dv6-3264ca
    AMD Triple-Core CPU 2.2 Ghz
    6GB RAM
    128MB ATI Graphic Card
    750GB Toshiba HDD
    Windows 7 64-bit
    The issue:
Recently I've had a very unfortunate HDD failure. The recovery partition wouldn't even load. I tried booting my notebook on Linux with the HDD still attached, and it wouldn't read. I extracted the HDD and placed it in an HDD-enclosuer and it still wouldn't load on Windows XP or Vista or 7. It would however read in the device manager of Windows and also in the BIOS.
I needed to extract some high-priority data from there so I managed to retrieve all my data safely through a data recovery service, but now the drive is rendered useless. I was told a low-level format might be able to help it be usable again, and if that were to happen, the recovery partition would then be removed in the process.
In addition to that, I would like to install Windows 7 64-bit onto the drive, but the notebook box did not come with an installation CD, which is quite frustrating. Is there any way HP can let me download Windows 7 through some warranty service?
I have a one-year warranty on my laptop.
So in closing, I would like to know if I can get Windows 7 back onto my HDD for free, or if I need to go about buying Windows 7 again.
Any advice from you kind folks?
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    Here are Two options.
    1.  If you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD.
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-link...
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the underside of your notebook when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.
    http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx
Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.
    2.  You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these cost around $30 if you live in the US.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

  • Cannot get windows 7 to install on new imac

I have a new "Thunderbolt" imac. Using the boot camp assistant disk that came with it (or the downloaded one), I cannot get windows 7 successfully installed. Mostly won't start up. Long hang-ups, mouse won't work. Have used Boot Camp on older mac Pro  for a long time with perfectly consistent results, but am frustrated here. I have followed instructions, made several fresh install attempts, used stock mouse and keyboard that came with imac, poor results. Boot camp appears to be v3.0 something. Wish I knew better what to ask......

    Hi joehonse,
Would you please let us know current situation of this issue? Any update?
    Regarding to error:
Package installation did not succeed, this issue may occur if you connect a computer to a server that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials while other Windows updates or application installations are pending and the Connector installation is canceled.
    àWhen
I navigate to that path, the installer is already there.  I'm not sure if it should work like this, but I have tried to run that installer independently, and it will fail everytime.”
Based on your description, did you mean that you can find the installer, however, can’t run it as normal? Would
you please let me know the error message that you can get?
In addition, as Robert suggested, would you please download the installer manually and replace the existed
one. Then please run and monitor the result.
Meanwhile, please refer to the following article and check if can help you.

  • Getting window's updates

After replacing hard drive and using recovery disks to restore to factory settings, I cannot get Window Updates. Even if I change the settings in Windows Update in control panel, it stays red with an x in the shield.

    Hi @1314dogger0002 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your Compaq Presario CQ57-229WM Notebook and not installing drivers.
This could be  a Microsoft service issue. Here is a fix from Microsoft. First, try to click the Windows icon, type services in the Search box, and then click or tap View Local Services. Scroll down to the Windows Installer. Startup type should be - Automatic, and Service Status should be - started
Restart the computer after this step and try installing updates again.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system this will help update the system.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?

Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.

I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
    Thank You all :-)

where can I get windows 7 keyboard and mouse drivers for bootcamp?
I have installed Windows 7 in a boot camp partition. I can only use usb keyboard and mouse by booting Windows intyo safe mode, and I am totally unable to use my Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. How do I resolve this?
I'm running Lion - 10.7.2. Boot Camp Assistant fails to download drivers - that issue has been going on for some time, and has been reported by others as well.
But that answers your question.  You get the drivers by using BCA to download them.  Your inability to download the drivers is a separate issue than not being able to use your wireless keyboard.
While some people may have issues downloading the drivers, many others have successfully downloaded the drivers.  I have downloaded them fine on several different Macs.  It may take a long time, depending on the speed of your internet connection.  Mine took over 3 hours.
Regardless, you need to download the drivers using Boot Camp Assistant.  Try again, and if you still have problems, start a new thread and provide as much details as possible to describe what your seeing so that we don't have to go through this back-and-fourth, and you'll get your answer quicker.

  • AppleScript error with iTunes: Can't get window 'iTunes' of class pcap ...

I'm positive there's a better way to check if AirTunes is the active device (maybe by seeing if the current playlist is a device playlist, and checking the source name?), but I don't have any way to test that.

  • Getting window transparency on startup

    Hi all,
I'm sure there's been hundreds of threads about transparency but I haven't been able to find one that addresses my situation. I downloaded xcompmgr and transset-df. So far I've been able to get the shadows the way I want with xcompmgr but I can't seem to get Window Transparency as default. What I mean is that when I startx I get my blank screen (using ScrotWM with only bare basics installed onto system) and then I open a program, say Swiftweasel (see screenshot), it appears non-transparent until I manually type:  transset-df 0.7  hit enter and select the window. I'm using Lilyterm as my terminal but it has it's own Transparency settings, in case you're wondering about the screenshot.
Anyway, I was just wondering if there was a way I could configure xcompmgr to get Transparent Windows on startup or use transset-df to do it or create some sort of shell script (using zsh). To clarify, I was wanting ALL windows to be Transparent (to specified degree) by default, without having to manually type, set and select each and every new window as it opens. If I missed something in the --help files for each of these programs then I'm sorry. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Should I get Windows 7 onmy MacBook Pro?

So I was thinking about getting Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro it's a early 2011 model mc721ll/a and I really need a Windows OS but I don't want to buy a windows computer becuase I need my mac for all the adobe software I have and microsoft office and just becuase I like Mac better. So I have literally had this latop for 4 days now and asked someone who knows a lot about Macs and he said I shouldn't becuase my mac is already slow as it is but I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 16gb and the hard drive to a hybrid ssd and most likely swap out the optical dirve and insert a standard ssd to make it faster, becuase verything is so slow on certain days somtimes it's fast and somtimes it's slow, but like I said only 4 days and still slow. But anyways my dilema was that I want to become a Video Game Developer (I'm a junior in high school [16]) or atleast just a computer scientist and I need to learn to code and program but I need windows for software like Unity, Cryengine, etc. and I need Windows for that becuase when I talked to my Computer Science teacher she said it would be better to have windows as you can see my dilema so what I'm asking is do you think I should get Windows 7 64-bit for my macbook (also I will be getting the upgrades on my laptop so just imagine they are there) Becuase I can't seem to find any good and free programs for developing games on mac but on windows I have found a lot.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

If you subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud, you can use the Windows version or the Mac versions so that shouldn't be a problem. You can also run Office 2013 on a Windows machine. You can also, of course, run a 64-bit version of Win 7 either as a virtual machine or under Boot Camp on a Mac. But you would, at the least, have to purchase a version of Windows which can be quite expensive.
You can definitely speed up your machine by adding a SSHD. More memory would help, as well, if you're going to run Windows as a virtual machine.
It's up to you - either way you're going to need to make purchases of, at least, Windows and, at the most, purchases of Windows, a virtual machine client, more RAM, etc.
Boot Camp seems your best bet - then all you would have to purchase is Windows.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

i bought a macbook and want to know how to get my music to download on a replacement shuffle

Sorry. If your tabs aren't restores and "Restore Recently Closed Tabs" is grayed and there aren't any windows to restore then the tabs from that session are lost. It is better to bookmark tabs that are important by clicking the star on the location bar or bookmark all open tabs to prevent such issues. You can try to find them in the history (History > Show All History).

  • Getting Windows 7 on the Mid 2011 MacBook Air EASILY *TESTED*

    Greetings!
As this is my first post, I wanted to make it count. Thus I have decided to compile a simple guide on EASILY getting Windows 7 installed on to your mid-2011 MacBook Air.
I have been following the many threads around here regarding the trouble people are having getting Windows 7 installed on to their Mid-2011 MacBook Air's. I have read complaints of Windows Support Software (drivers) downloads taking too long, of not being able to save the Windows Support Software correctly to a USB key, etc, etc.
The following process is relatively simple, but not as simple as it should be. I'm quite certain as Lion matures, some of the Bootcamp issues we have been having will be remediated.
This procedure has been tested on the following platform:
    Mid-2011 11" MacBook Air ~ 1.6GHz i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB Flash (SSD) HDD
    What's Wrong?:
    1. On the MacBook Air platform specifically, users are expected to have a Windows 7 ISO before beginning. Some users have stated that this can be accomplished easily using the DISK UTILITY ISO CREATION FEATURE. THIS WILL NOT WORK. THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF PUTTING THE WINDOWS 7 ISO ONTO A USB KEY IS MAKING IT BOOTABLE! You need to make the USB key you're installing to bootable, plain and simple.
    2. I tested the Windows Support Software drivers after downloading them and the Intel HD3000 GPU and Sound Drivers do not install properly.
    3. Creating a Windows 7 Startup Disk through Bootcamp hangs.
    What You'll Need:
    1. A Windozzze box
    2. A DVD-ROM Drive
    3. Internet Access (for downloading a Win7 ISO in case you don't have a Win7 install DVD and other necessary utilities)
    4. ISODisk - http://www.isodisk.com/ - 100% FREE
    5. Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool - http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.h tml- 100% FREE (you may also acquire this tool from Microshaft)
    6. A little patience
    7. A LEGAL Windows 7 license to activate Windows 7 after 30 days.
    8. 2 FORMATTED USB DRIVES.
NOTE: Technically you only need 1 USB drive, however, you will need to get the Bootcamp drivers from OS X onto a USB key. To make this easy, the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool will format one drive as an NTFS partition and the other drive should be formatted as a simple MS-FAT partition (can do this through DISK UTILITY, if you don't know how, Google it, very simple).
    Let's Get'r Done:
    1. Boot up your Windoze box.
    2. Insert your Windows 7 Install DVD into your DVD-ROM.
    3. (OPTIONAL) This step may be performed in lieu of step #2 if you don't have a Windows 7 Install DVD, download a Windows 7 ISO (don't download illegaly) from Microsoft. You may skip to step #6 if this is how you're to proceed.
    4. Download and install ISODisk.
    5. Create an ISO of your Windows 7 Install DVD - Select the DVD within the ISODisk app, choose a name and save location, create your ISO. *This takes a bit to complete*.
    6. Download and install the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.
    7. Open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, ensure you have inserted the USB key you intend to use for Windoze 7, once the ISO has been created from step #5 or you already have one from step #2, select the USB button and create your USB/Windows 7 ISO Disk (all this does is place the necessary Windows 7 boot files on the USB key so that the Windows 7 ISO may be booted from the USB key).
    8. Once complete, safely eject your Windows 7 USB key and move on over to your beautiful Mac. Place the Windows 7 USB Key aside for the time being.
    9. Once booted, place the second USB key (the USB key you intend to use for your Bootcamp drivers) into your beautiful Mac. Ensure that it's formatted as MS-FAT, you can do this via DISK UTILITY, Google it if you don't know how.
    10. Navigate to Mac HD --> Library --> Application Support --> Bootcamp --> Here you will find a BootCamp DMG file, this is a large file that contains the necessary Windoze 7 Drivers for the MacBook Air, DOUBLE-CLICK IT TO MOUNT IT, a FINDER window will appear revealing its contents. Perform a Shift-A to select all files, RIGHT-CLICK and select COPY.
    11. DOUBLE-CLICK your MS-FAT USB key, PASTE the files from step #10 onto the drive. You now have your Windows 7 Driver disk. Place the Bootcamp Drivers USB Key aside for the time being.
    12. Open the BOOTCAMP ASSISTANT, this is located in your Mac HD --> Applications --> Utilties Folder.
    13. IMPORTANT!!!
Uncheck "CREATE A WINDOWS 7 INSTALL DISK"
Uncheck "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST WINDOWS SUPPORT SOFTWARE FROM APPLE" - At least for now to get you up and running.
    14. Ensure that "INSTALL WINDOWS 7" is SELECTED and click continue.
    15. Insert your Windows 7 ISO USB Key into your beautiful Mac.
    16. Partition your drive accordingly, create the Windows 7 partition (the Windows 7 USB Key needs to be in the Air for this).
    17. As soon as the partition is created, your air WILL REBOOT, the Windows 7 install will begin.
    18. You will be prompted that the BOOTCAMP parition is not NTFS and needs to be in order to install Windows 7, THIS IS FINE.
    19. Click FORMAT, the BOOTCAMP partition will be formatted as NTFS. Select the same partition number and continue. NOTE: The Windows install IS VERY fast on your beautiful SSD equipped Mac.
    20. Once the installation completes, insert your USB Bootcamp key.
    21. Navigate to the Setup.exe file on the key and double-click.
    22. Sitback and let the Bootcamp drivers load. Windows 7 will reboot.
    23. Install your Windows updates and reboot.
    24. Reboot again and HOLD THE OPTION KEY, this will allow you to get back into your Mac.
    25. Once in OS X, click settings and STARTUP DISK, select OS X (unless you want to mainly run Windoze).
    26. Finished.
Please let me know if you should have any questions.
You should now have a fully functioning Windows 7 Bootcamp install with all drivers properly installed. You can check this by navigating to Device Manager within Windows and ensuring that you have no yellow exclamation marks.

Sorry, must have been the crackpipe I smoked last night! LOL
You won't see anything in the Application Support --> Bootcamp folder unless you have previously downloaded the Windows Support Software. Good find.
    ADDENDUM STEP:
This step should be placed between 9-10.
Open Bootcamp Assistant. Uncheck everything BUT, "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST WINDOWS SUPPORT SOFTWARE FROM APPLE". You will be prompted to burn the image to a CD/DVD or save to a USB Key. Save the image to a USB key. This will format your USB key properly in preparation for the files. The download commences and if you're lucky, the files will simply be saved to your USB key without having to manually copy them over to the key using the steps above.
IMPORTANT - Even if the support software hangs when its being saved to the USB key, you should now be able to navigate to the directory and see the image. Follow the steps above.
    Apologies for missing this.
    Best,
    WBN

You could use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • Getting Windows Server 2008 to Create a Virtual Machine to Run Windows 8.1 Is Easy -- Not So Getting Windows Server 2012 To Do So

I spent an entire work day trying to configure HYPER-V on Windows 2012 R2 Server to run Windows 8.1 in a virtual operating system. Gave up entirely on Windows 2012 R2 Server since no matter how I changed the memory configuration, it insisted there was
too little memory available to perform bootstrap and initialization of the Windows 2012 R2 Server / Windows 8.1 combination. In vivid contrast, getting Windows 8.1 installed and operational under HYPER-V running on Windows 2008 Server is a snap. No whining
from HYPER-V about a purported lack of memory. The machine has 2GB of main memory and nothing much running on it besides HYPER-V.  This situation is, of course, all my fault.

    Hi Sir ,
    Personally , 2 GB for 2012R2 host and a windows8.1 VM is a little low .
Also the memory consumption is different between 2012R2 and 2008 .
I would suggest you run RAMmap.exe to check the free space , then you may see how many RAM can be used :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ff700229.aspx
By the way , win8.1 is not in the
supported guest OS list of 2008 hyper-v server .
