Getting Windows Explorer to work without bootcamp

I covet my IPhone so I was actually looking at buying a Mac Book Pro. To test the waters, I received a Mac mini as a gift. I am so frustrated. It has been a month and I am debating on just trashing the whole idea. I MUST run Windows XP, specifically Windows Explorer. The medical software I use for work can ONLY be used in Explorer. I know this medical software *****(and probably gets a kickback from Microsoft) but I have no other choice. Parallels have been installed but they are a joke. My understanding of bootcamp is basically changing the MAC to a PC. Question, if I am going to use bootcamp, then why not go back to my 6 month old PC. I have bought the book, Switching to Mac. However, I don’t want to waste my time reading it if I can not get this to work.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As a user of Parallels, I find it hard to understand what your problem with it might be. On the (rare) occasions I need to run Windows, my XP install in Parallels v3 is fast and stable, and IE certainly works perfectly well.
In terms of your question regarding why have a Mac if you are going to use Bootcamp to run XP, then the simple answer is because when you don't need to be running IE, booting into MacOS gives you fast, flexible system which has none of the broad security concerns of the Windows platform, and some incredibly powerful creative software. Try creating the kind of fluid, engaging photographic slideshows you can build in Keynote (not free) or iMovie (free with the system) in PowerPoint for example!
Ultimately, MacOS is just another operating system however, so if you have no need for the elegance or tight integration of it, or the freedom from malware or the breadth of software or the easy-use that can get novice users into active use of the system in very little time with barely any knowledge, then indeed, there isn't much reason to buy a Mac. Windows XP is certainly stable and reliable, even if it lacks the other benefits.

  • How do I get Windows 8.1, run via Bootcamp, to detect an external HDMI display

    Good afternoon,
So earlier today, I managed to install Windows 8.1, via Bootcamp, on my 15' MBP retina with Iris pro 5200 integrated graphics (Late 2013). I cannot figure out how to get the dang thing to recognize my TV through an HDMI cable. I did have it kinda sorta working the first time I installed Windows on my MBP with bootcamp, but that installation failed. What do I need to do to fix this problem?
    Summary:
Using a 15' MBP retina with Iris Pro 5200 graphics. This is not the model with the nvidia graphics card.
This current installation seems to be working without too many problems.
Windows 8.1 will not detect my tv, and yes, the HDMI cable is plugged into both the TV and the MBP.
Why is Windows on my MBP failing? It seems like everything is set up properly.
(I know I could do some weird combination of Thunderbolt to eventually HDMI, but I have not tried this)
I simply want to plug an HDMI cable into my TV and my MBP.
I do have a regular windows desktop, and this works without any problems (besides being windows)
Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

with my imac it worked as automatically as in OS X my video card is amd though and the monitor is dvi rather then hdmi

  • Upgrading MacBook Pro Hard Drive - cannot get Windows partition to work

    Hello,
The other day, I decided to replace my 320 GB hard drive with a 1 TB hard drive/SSD hybrid. I did a little bit of research about cloning the drive before that, and it seemed pretty straight forward to clone the OS X partition, but I wasn't really sure about cloning my Windows partition. Originally, my 320 GB hard drive had 2 partitions: 220 GB for OS X Mavericks, and 100 GB for Windows 8.1.
I bought the new drive with an external enclosure and plugged it in. The first thing I did was open Disk Utility and partitioned the new hard drive (750 GB HFS+, 250 GB NTFS). I figured I would need to partition it first and clone each partition separately. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X partition, and it worked with no problem (I immediately could restart my computer and boot with the partition on the new drive, while it was still plugged in by USB).
Next, I tried using CCC to clone the Windows partition the same way (I realize now that CCC cannot do this). 7 hours later, the cloning was complete, but there was an error that a couple files couldn't be copied. I tried copying them manually but it didn't work. I wasn't sure if the Windows partition would work, so to find out, I switched the hard drives and put the old 320 GB one in the external enclosure. I booted my computer and it booted the new OS X partition with no problem. It also mounted the Windows partition that I cloned with CCC, and I can access all of the files in it. However, when I restarted and held down "option", it would not let me boot the Windows partition.
After some googling, I realized CCC is not able to clone a bootcamp partition and make it bootable, so I opened disk utility and deleted the Windows partition (using the minus button), then recreated it (using the plus button). I downloaded Winclone (paid $30), which supposedly can clone a bootcamp partition. I opened Winclone and it seemed pretty simple: you just choose the source partition on the left, and the target on the right. I plugged in the USB enclosure with my old hard drive, and in the Winclone menu the original Windows partition popped up. I chose that as my source, and chose to copy it to the new NTFS partition on the new drive that I created. I left it on overnight, and when I woke up it said it was completed.
I now had two drives mounted: my NTFS partition that I created, and a new one that said "EFI". I have no idea what EFI is. My NTFS partition looks like it has all of the files from my original Windows partition on it; however, when I restart it does not allow me to boot with it, although I now have the option to boot EFI. When I select EFI, I am given the Windows 8.1 start up screen (with the blue Windows logo), but then an error message pops up saying something like there is an issue and it needs to restart (it restarted before I could read the whole thing).
When I boot in OS X, I only have the NTFS partition (with all my Windows files) mounted, and no EFI. When I restart, I can still boot EFI, but I always get the same message and then it restarts.
Is there any way I can fix my Windows partition so that it works the same way it did on my old drive? What is EFI? Should I delete it? How can I make the NTFS partition, which seems to have all of my files, bootable? I only want 2 partitions: one for OS X, and one for Windows. Also, can I do all of this without having to reinstall either of the operating systems?
    Thanks

    Hmm, that's a good question!
I headed over to the twocanoes website (the folks that make Winclone) and their guide mentions something about running Sysprep before you create the Windows image. If you skipped that step, that may be why you're having issues
    http://www.twocanoes.com/support/winclone/migrating-a-bootcamp-partition-with-wi nclone/
Step 24 in that guide also mentions copying a Boot file - were you able to/did you do that?
You may have better luck over in the Bootcamp forum, which is here.

  • Installing windows on macbook pro without bootcamp. Will this allow for switchable graphics?

Hi everyone, I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 Inch with the discrete nvidia graphics card inbuilt with it.
I love windows and I am planning on running windows 7/8 on the macbook pro as my primary OS (because of advantages of gaming and being familarized with windows os), however I have heard the issue of running windows on bootcamp severally drains battery life as apple does not allow you to switch the nvidia graphics to the integrated graphics. Is this true? I have heard that running windows 7/8 on bootcamp allows for only around 3:30 hours of battery life, whilst OSX allows for 8+ since it uses the integrated graphics primarily when not running GPU demanding applications.
I am wondering if you can install windows 7 without bootcamp which will wipe apple OS from the laptop completely. Will this allow for the laptop to do switable graphics without problems allowing the laptop to save much needed battery life?
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

Sorry it seems to have taken so long for you to get an answer on this question!
Your last post was mostly right... It IS a bad idea to go that route!
While it's technically POSSIBLE to get Windows in place without OSX, it's a MAJOR technical hassle and you need to jump through several hoops to get to that point.
In addition to the hassle required, having an OSX partition can be incredibly useful at times - I've had my Windows system break several times in the past where the automated (and even manual) startup-repair process failed to get Windows booting again, but a short boot into OSX later, I have the problem resolved (via OSX) and am able to get back into Windows.
Finally, you need to be aware that the graphics card situation isn't because of the presence of OSX. Just because you get rid of MacOS doesn't mean you suddenly will be able to use either graphics card! The limitation comes into play with the hardware drivers necessary to get all your hardware working in Windows - they just don't have the facility to switch graphics cards built into them.
I'm afraid you're stuck with the NVidia card when using Windows, one way or another!
Bootcamp is a prerequisite BTW. Without it you won't be able to get Windows installed at all (at least not without MAJOR stumbling block, again!), and again, the graphics card limitation isn't due to OSX or Bootcamp.
Also, battery life... Yes. You'll have significantly less in Windows, and this isn't entirely because of the graphics card situation either. MacOS is just built so well, with the limited hardware used by Apple in mind, that power-management when using OSX os significantly better! The legendary battery life of Apple systems is actually primarily due to the operating system, not the batteries themselves!
As a helpful indication: On my 2009 17" MBP I get about 7 hours on the integrated chip in OSX (8 is pusing it, but is possible sometimes); about 5 hours in OSX when using the NVidia; and about 3 and a half when I'm in Windows.
Hope this all helps you. If you have any further questions feel free!
Apologies for the scattered approach to answering your posts - it's LATE where I am and I"m kinda rushing through things... :-)

  • Windows explorer stopped working when trying to open a specific folder...and solution

I have had a problem with a specific folder or two on my computer, when I open the folder I get the error message that windows explorer has stopped working.  It only happens with specific folders and everything else works fine.
I did a lot of reading to figure out a fix.
I finally tried right clicking the program explorer.exe located in C:Windows and chose "run as administrator" and this fixed the problem.
Note that the error message details list an application crash of windows.exe
I thought I would post this to help others.  I don't know if this is the same problem some folks describe with a continual loop of the error message, problems opening the control panel or problems upon start up.  But if you have a similar problem to the one I described try this very simple fix.
    Cheers

I don't know what OS you are running, but under Windows 7 RC build 7100 the selection was ghosted to "run as administrator".
I was able to stop the problem from happening by right clicking the folder I was having problems with, selecting properties>customize tab and changing the "Optimize this folder for:" from Videos to General Items.
I know that this particular folder was optimized for general items from the beginning as I had just folders inside which were filled with videos. When I started to move videos into this parent folder to separate them later, this parent folder switched by itself
to being optimized for Videos. I'm not positive but I think that this was the time I started to have a problem with this folder until I did what I described above.
This is my very first post, so I hope I explained things well enough to be of help to someone.
    Thanks
That's fixed my problem.  Stopped responding every time I opened My Videos, changed the file properties to optimized for general and now the icons aren't thumbnail big but it doesn't crash now...  Thank you, it was really starting to bug me.

  • IE 11 - Sharepoint open in windows explorer not working

In my IE 11 - Sharepoint open in windows explorer don't work.
It appear always error message "Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer"
    Already installed FIX ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2846960)
    Restart laptop
Then Sign in to the SharePoint Online site with Keep me signed in option
    But still dont work.
This happens in all libraries. This issue happens in our corporate intranet. I had this issue in another laptops but with the Microsoft FIX and following all that steps, it solved.
But for whatever reason now i have 2 machines that even after applying the same Fix and steps still continues not working.

    Hi,
From your description, my understanding is that you cannot use “open with explorer” in 2 machines in your farm.
If you have installed Desktop Experience feature in your environment, please add your SharePoint Server(http://spserver) to Local intranet site with steps below:
    Open “Internet Options” menu.
    Click “Security” tab.
    Click Sites.
    Click Advance.
Enter your SharePoint Server, click Add.
    Close and apply.
Restart your browser, and test your issue.

  • Windows Explorer Stopped Working after Adjusting Preferences in Bridge

OK, this is the PhotoShop forum and in the Bridge forum is where this issue should be addressed, but there is little activity there, so I hope no one will mind me posting here...
The following problem occurred after adjusting the Preference settings in Bridge:
When right clicking on any folder in either the Explorer or on the Desktop the following message is displayed "Windows Explorer has stopped working..."
This is now the second time, after having created two new User Accounts. While Explorer worked perfectly for a couple of days before adjusing the settings in Birdge, I cannot undo what has caused this problem and am reluctant to setup yet another user account. Also, I can't figure out which setting change might have caused this.
Is it possible that by adjusting the settings in Bridge it added a shell extension to Windows Explorer?
Has anyone here encountered a similar problem after adjusting the settings in Bridge?
    Cheers,

  • How come when I update Firefox in Ubuntu, the existing french language package is not functional while in Windows, it always works without problems?

When I upgrade Firefox (French, from 13.0 to 13.0.1) in Ubuntu, the existing french language pack does not work, while in Windows 7, it does work without problems. It seems to me that the language pack should be system independent.
This problem happens in Ubuntu everytime there is an upgrade, and it is usually very difficult to find the correct language file that wors in Ubuntu. Again, in Windows, no such problem.
    I am puzzled.

You always need to reinstall language packs if you update Firefox because the updater doesn't seem to be able to find them on its own.
