Getting windows to boot from grub [Resolved]

I have a netbook that I'd like to put windows on. I reserved a primary partition (sda4) for it (boot flag/ntfs), and since I have no other way to install it but through flash memory, I made a small, clean install onto disk and used dd to copy everything over to the flash drive. Normally I'm able to just copy all the data over (dd if=/dev/sdam of=/dev/sdbn), and the mbr stuff over (dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=446 count=1), and everything is good, but I can't get the windows partition to boot after I copy it over. I've tried fiddling w/ grub and the boot.ini file (different partition numbers), and copying the mbr to the beginning of sda (hosed grub) and the beginning of sda4 (hosed the windows partition), but when I try to boot windows grub hangs w/ the boot information and a flashing cursor. Any ideas as to what needs to be done to get windows to boot?

It wasn't a menu.lst or boot.ini issue as far as I can tell. I tried just about every partition permutation I could in both files and nothing worked. I eventually bit the bullet and deleted boot and swap so I could just install XP on the first partition and everything was fine after that.
My best guess is that the MBRs, both the one written through the USB stick version of the XP install and the versions I pulled off of other windows installs, weren't correct, and wouldn't point to the correct partition. I can't remember exactly, but odds are when I encountered this in the past I probably just dropped the XP install CD again so it would write the correct data to the MBR and reinstalled grub, but since I couldn't do that in this case I was kinda hosed. The only thing that I didn't try and could have worked was making a clean XP install on the third partition of a hard drive and using that MBR.

  • Can't get ibook to boot from external harddrive when hitting option key

    Hello,
After owning a Pismo Powerbook that had it's hardrive replaced --twice--, i'm all about backing my shtuff up for my ibook.
I picked up a Lacie d2 external harddrive today, and used Disk Utility's Restore function to copy everything from the ibook to the drive. I can boot off the Lacie without a problem when I select it as the startup disk from sys preferences.
But I can't get it to boot from the Lacie when I depress the Option key while rebooting or starting.
    any suggestions?
    ibook g4 933   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Let's be sure  you are doing it correctly:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.  Select the desired boot drive (you will have to wait about 20 seconds before you can make the selection) then click on the large right arrow button.  If this is what you are doing and it does not work, then you may need to re-prep the external drive and re-clone.
    1.  Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above re-clone as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination.  Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Qosmio F60-14K - Can't get it to boot from the SSD

    Hi
Im trying to install a new SSD disk, but cant, because I cant get it to boot from the SSD, "Insert a system start disk" Works fine as a USB, even installed Windows 7 on it and tried to boot from it but with out any luck.
All I havent tried are to switch between IDE/AHCI, but that because I dont have that option in BIOS. I think I have tried everything I can test, any tips/help would be much appreciated!!
And so to the BIOS part a joke to call bios all you can do change clock settings and the bootorder more or less!
    Anywhy to get more options?
    thx
    //Henrik

I installed it on my desktop cuz I couldnt install win7 when it was in the laptop it said it wasant a start partision, but it didnt help since it didnt boot from it even with the OS installed on the disk.
Since I cant boot from the ssd it dosent matter what I install on it.
Yeah aslong as u dont want to change anything the set bios seams ok but not as soon as you want to change anything like in my case.
something I really really miss is the fan speed control and ofc the acpi and maybe some chipset settings.
but aslong as I get my SSD to work Im more then happy with the bios settings ;)

  • Installing windows and booting from external drive

I just got a Seagate 250gb external drive. I only have cords to connect it to my I-mac with usb cords from its dock but the drive itself has a firewire port. What i want to do is install windows xp onto the seagate drive so the drive can stay Windows formatted and my mac drive can stay mac formatted so both OS's will run at peak efficiency. The only reason i want to be able to boot up from the drive is so i can use my I-macs hardware but be able to play my PC games in its windows OS.
    How do i accomplish this?

Assuming it's an Intel iMac since you're installing Windows®, Intel Macs can boot off of USB, but...
USB2 is slow compared to Firewire/400 even, about 1/2 to 2/3rds the spedd, so FW would be better.
    How to format your disks...

Open Disk Utility, format the external MacOS Extended Journalled, and don't forget the GUID partitioning at the bottom of that link.

  • How can I get Windows 7 Boot Camp to find my Magic Mouse?

    Hey!
So I just bought a Magic Mouse and it works flawlessly in OS X.
But when I use Windows 7 Boot Camp I can't find the mouse to add it as a new device. My bluetooth works just fine and I have the Boot Camp 3.3 drivers.
I tried rebooting, turning the mouse off and on, read a bunch of guides on the internet but no one is having issues CONNECTING the mouse, only getting it to work, so my research is proving to be hard.
    Can you guys help me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Maia,
Can you please mention your MAC model (MBA 2011, MBP, iMac?). Which OS X version?. Have you problems pairing other bluetooth devices?
You may want to try the following setps.
1.- First make sure that you have the latest EFI and software updates. Including latest bootcamp bluetooth drivers.
2.- Unpair MM in Mac OSX
3.- Do a Nvram and SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    4.- Restart
5.- Pair your MM under Mac OSX
6.- Boot on Bootcamp assiging bootcamp as a starting partition
    7.- Add your device.
Let me know if that worked, there are another tricks you can try but I need additional information.

  • Can't get BIOS to boot from a DVD!

I downloaded a Windows 10 64 Bit .iso file and I want to upgrade to it from 32 Bit, but no matter what I set my computer to boot first it always loads Windows and I can't install it from the .iso file because of a error with some older computers. Also
I do have the specs for a 64 Bit OS.

    Hi,
As mentioned above, If it does not automatically boot from the DVD, then you need to manually enter bios, then change the device boot order, make your DVD as the first boot device. Please also make sure that the DVD is not corrupted, in other words, pleaes
make sure that it is bootable, as Anthony mentioned, you need to correctly burn the iso to DVD.
And it's unavailable to to upgrade a 32 bit system to a 64 bit system, you need to backup your files and perform a clean installation.

  • What is the best way to update Windows 7 Boot from 32bit to 64bit?

I'm sure this has been answered a number of times, but I can't quite seem to get a search query that takes me where I want to be. Here's the issue.
I have a Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011. I just put 8GB of RAM in it, replacing the stock 4GB. I use Boot Camp to run Windows 7 32bit, which can only use so much of the 8GB RAM (2.16 useable). I've read around and understand I'll need to update to 64bit Windows. What's the most painless way to do this with Boot Camp that will preserve all my files on the Windows 7 boot.
Thank you for your help in advance.

    radioactivepal wrote:
So, I should back up Windows 7 while in Windows or should I do that with Boot Camp? I'm a bit confused about the process in general.
You can not 'upgrade' 32bit Windows to 64bit 'inplace'. You will need to perform a custom install, this will erase you existing 32bit installation entirely. Then you can install the 64bit version and all your programs.
How much Ram do you have?
Sorry about that question, I read slower than I type
Don't forget to make a full backup of your Windows files before you start the installation, they will not be there after you finish.

  • Can't get k330b to boot from cd

I need to be able to boot this machine from a dvd/cd.
I bought this machine to test various OS , say linux, win server etc.
When I put an ISO image in, it won't boot from the CD, and I can't find a way to get into setup.
I did the holding F2, but there is no option to say boot from CD!
If anyone can show me the way, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

iso are ment to be burnt onto a cd and when they are burnt the iso image is extracted and you should get a full cd layout on it
you have to enter the bios dont have that model so cant say how to get in but del or f2 or f1
then you have to look for boot order and make sure dvd is first

  • How do I get MP to boot from SSD?

Hi, I plan on buying the new Intel X25-M Generation 2 as my boot drive and will put it in the lower optical bay. I suppose I'll boot from my Install DVD then format the SSD making sure it's a GUID partition and install OS X onto the SSD, but then how do I tell MP to boot from the SSD??
BTW, is it better to first boot up via my HDD to format the SSD. Then boot from the Install DVD and install OS X in the SSD?

The install process should set it as the boot voleme, but you can always use the "Startup Disk" system preference. Holding Option while booting will also let you choose the boot volume.
BTW, is it better to first boot up via my HDD to format the SSD. Then boot from the Install DVD and install OS X in the SSD?
    It makes no difference.

  • Solaris + Windows 7 .. delete Solaris Partition .. how do i boot from GRUB?

i had Solaris and W7 partitions -- together summing to the entire disk size -- but i needed to expand W7 partition. i was not able to resize the ZFS so i deleted it; i can now only boot as far as GRUB "BASH-like commands" window [GRUB> prompt], which rejects everything i enter.
the ultimate goal is to expand the W7 partition and effect another Solaris install (and possibly another primary partition -- Linux?)
    how can i recover?

You saved my obtuse butt again
... THANK YOU AGAIN ALAN !!
i was contemplating this strategy of the W7 install dvd repair mechanism, but i refrained because of the imagined risk of destroying my W7 install -- i was not going to attempt it unless someone knowledgeable confirmed it.
the W7 repair took ~ 25 minutes -- it installed a recovery partition.
my original idea was to uninstall GRUB, but i was anxious about that solution too.

  • Microsoft Windows (7) boot from (native) VHD : Question about missing boot (flag) on active primary partition

    Hi!
First, where can I post queries about native VHDs on Windows 7?
I see VHD Native Boot and Driver Cloning  in Windows Desktop Development forums >  General
    Windows Desktop Development Issues,
    (when I navigate there the option's N/A, http://i.imgur.com/9Vj7tPJ.png )
I've finally copied my VHD(s), and tested the copies by adding BCD(edit) entries, pointing to the new VHD's.
I had a failure with a native VHD. I managed to copy the VHD file from the (internal) HD, before cleaning the HD and restarting from scratch (new vdisk created and attached, win7 reinstalled).
The original VHD ('Win7VHD') is still working, but won't boot (see mounted Disk 3 (I:), compared to the active,
    bootable partition (C:).

Before creating a fresh install on the new, clean "VHD (Win7)" volume, I tried lots of things to fix the "won't boot" issue with the VHD (rebuild MFT, fixBR... without ever knowing exactly what I was doing :()
So I've created a BCD entry for the recovered VHD... now, can I make it bootable again?
(I don't know what the root of the bootable VHD has to contain)
(Thanks in advance to all you cool cats :)

  • I have an old iMac that won't boot up anymore.  I have the OS X install disks but I can't get it to boot from these disks.  No need to save anything.  Any suggestions?

I have an old iMac.  Not sure of the operating system but the install disks say OS X.  The computer will not boot anymore and all I keep getting is to restart and when I do I keep getting the same message.  I do have the install disks but I can't get the computer to install, or for that matter, read the disks.  I would like to rebuild the computer from these disks so that I can continue to use this computer.  There is no need to save anything on the computer as I backed it up months ago.  Any suggestions as to how I can save this computer and not have to recycle it?

Really need to know what version of OS X it is currently running, and what version you are trying to install.

  • My Windows wont boot from the Recovery USB

    Hi,
I created a recovery USB and when pressing f12 at start it does show me the USB as boot option. But when I select it nothing happens and it again shows me boot option.
THe space consumed by recovery media is 10.1 GB and it wont let  me create it again . Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, your installation disk is running under OSX??? If no the media has a problem!!!
    1. Restart your mac and hold the alt (option key) to select media to install.
    2. Restart you mac and hold the "c" key to boot.
an other solution is to make a partition on the hard drive and put a restore image of the Mac os X Installation dvd inside it then Restart your mac nad hold the "option" key and you will see the partition with mac os x installation and you can make a new installation from there.

  • I cannot get Vista to boot from CD in BIOS

Does anyone have a resolution to this problem:
When accessing BIOS (F12 on boot-up on my computer), I selected CD-RW as #1 in BIOS.  After saving and exiting, my computer doesn't see a bootable disc in the drive, and goes to internal HDD.  I am trying to wipe my hard drive with DBAN, that is
the disc that I have in the drive on boot-up.
I have also deselected all other drives (using the space bar in BIOS set-up) and that still doesn't work.
    HELP!!

Does it detect the drive when you are within Windows?
What is the optical CD/DVD drive, SATA or IDE? If it is SATA optical drive, you may need to configure settings in BIOS to let AHCI chipset use PATA emulation mode.
SATA optical drives are not available after you start a Windows Vista-based computer
