Getting wireless connection at home-no router

This may be a stupid question but I have an iBook G4 with airport card that I take with me to the lake cabin to stay connected to internet.  We have a secure connection there.  I brought the iBook home to my home and was going to connect to my ethernet cable and noticed that I have an Airport connection: Belkin_N1_Wireless_4B4095.  I have no router at my house and was wondering where in the world is the source for this connection-I have never set up and wireless network at home.
Thanks,
Glen

Your neighbor likely has a Belkin wireless router and your iBook is picking up the signal.
If you can get an Internet connection, and you do not have the Ethernet cable plugged into the iBook,  then your neighbor did not password protect his wireless network.

Ever since I received my Macbook Pro in July 2011 I've had issues with my wireless connection at home.  After software updates, Apple support suggested I reboot my router which works.  But now I have to do it every other day.  ????  AT&T my DSL carrier suggests I get a new router.  Apparently the one I have is really old and doesn't support my Macbook Pro.  Does this sound right?

If your using WEP encryption yes, Apple has discontinued that becaues it's worthless. WEP (and WPA) is cracked so encryption makes no sense.
Get a new Wireless N router, set it up with WPA2 (AES) Personal and two different 20+ randon letter/numbersymbol character passwords
One for Admin access only of the router, keep this on paper off all comptuers in a safe someplace.
One for entering into devices, computers etc for Internet Access Only.
You need the long and random password to defeat brute force attacks by GPU software that the hackers have now.
Also if you give out the password to another, they can't hack the network with the guest access password.
Computers remember the internet password, so anyone with access to your machines or network will have the password.
Since you have another Admin only password, they can't hack in. got it?
You don't need "Invisible" or "MAC Address filtering" that's a waste of time as hackers can sniff a network and causes issues getting on the network.
    Good luck.

  • I get wireless connection but my internet does not work on my ipad 2

I get wireless connection but my internet does not work on my ipad 2

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Wireless connection lost between my router and printer (hp officejet 4620)

My hp officejet 4620 printer has been working fine but now the wireless connection has been lost and I can't get the wireless connection back. The blue light for the wifi flashes blue. I can't get the connection back between the router and the printer because my wifi is actually working fine with my laptop. Any suggestions about what i can do to get the connection back so I can print again?
Is it something I need to do on the printer screen or laptop to fix the problem?

Have you powered off everything and power up again?  Power off printer and router.  Power on router and wait 2 mins.  Power up printer and see if it connects to your SSID.

  • WRT300N V1.1 - Firmw v1.51.2 - Problems to get wireless connection after long idle time

    Hello,
    I have a WRT300N, v1.1 with latest firmware available (v1.51.2).
I've been experiencing a strange problem:
    1. After long idle time (router is on, no devices are using it wirelessly), no device can get a wireless connection;
    2. I have tried using different OSes (Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, and Symbian OS);
    3. Wireline connection to a FE port works (if I plug a device using the cable, I can get an IP address and navigate to the internet).
    4. If power reset it (WRT300N), I can get wireless connections working again.
    Is this a known issue?
    Thanks, Gustavo

Well as you are able to go online from your Hardwired Computer, then i think you need to make some changes on the Wireless Part of your Router. Follow this settings on your Router, i think this might solve the problem.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 50 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.

I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.  Is this a known bug?  What can I do?

You maybe running low on memory since you are using the original iPad with iOS 5.1.1 and the iPad is crashing. This may help and it certainly won't hurt.
Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Do this before you launch Safari again. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data. You don't have to clear the history.

  • Wirelessly Connected to Home Hub 3, Cannot Get Int...

    Hello,
BT Infinity installed on 6th June Home Hub 3 (type B).  Previously on BT Broadband.
One laptop computer connects to the hub but will not connect to the Internet wirelessly (connects wired).  Running Windows 7.  Cannot surf, Skype.
Have been on to tech support (for hours!) they tried all the usual (change channel, update drivers, took control of laptop remotely, everything possible done).
Still not working, although did get a very brief sporadic connection.
Computer in question (Samsung Netbook, "n" connection) worked perfectly on old BT Broadband, works out of the house on wifi connections.
Has anyone had this problem?  Are there any solutions?
    Thanks.

Hi guys you most likely have this solved already but just incase I have recently encountered the same problem with my 'netbook'
I have tried everything from installing new drivers to creating a 'disable' registry key for IPV6 .. The way I solved this and hope it works for you was...
Go to you your sharing point and open wireless network connection.
    Click properties
In the dialogue box uncheck 'internet protocol version 6 (tcp/ipv6)
    Then above it click 'configure'
Another dialogue box will open informing you that you have made changes.
    Click 'yes'
This will open up in my case 'RealTek' driver.
    Click on 'advanced' tab
    'Wireless mode'
Go to right hand side of dialogue box and select 'value' drop down box
    Select 'IEEE 802.11b/g'
These deselects the 'n' router aspect as I believe our network adapters can't function with this.
    Now click 'ok'
    Let computer re-connect to router.
    Now try opening web pages.
    Problem solved (",)
    Hope this helps guys.
If you want to disable the IPV6 through registry I will put up details on how to do this but I believe this should suffice.

  • MacBook not connecting to home wifi router only

I may be going completely mad, but this morning my black MacBook 13inch just lost connection with my home wifi signal all of a sudden. My iMac, iBook G4, iPhone all continue to work normally. I thought it was my Airport card which may be faulty. I get the SSID signal, but when I type in the WPA string, it would just time out. I tried unenabling security on my router, but still cannot connect with the MB.
I took it into the Apple Store, to see a Genius, and managed to connect to the Apple store wifi with no problem, so it seems its not the Airport Card. Saw the Genius and he reset my PRAM, reconfigured the Network settings etc.
Got home, and same thing, still cannot connect to the home wifi.
I think there's a conflict somewhere between the router and the my MacBook, any ideas?
Could it be the latest 10.6.5?

I just had a similar problem unexpectedly occur. I have 2 MacBooks (both 10.6.5) on the same network - G only. One Macbook can no longer connect to our wireless, but the other is still working normally. The Macbook that can not connect to the home network can still connect to a neighbors unprotected wireless. Also 2 iphones can no longer access the wireless connection. I'd happily blame the cable modem, but one MacBook has no problems. Any ideas?

  • WRT350N: Vista cannot get wireless connection

I recently got a laptop to use on a wireless connection to my WRT350N. When I first set it up, it easily got a wireless connection to the WRT350N. After a few weeks of reliable wireless operation, the wireless connection would occasionally disconnect without warning or any apparent reason. I was usually able to reconnect fairly quickly until a couple of days ago. From that point on, reconnection was not assured. I switched the wireless mode on the WRT350N from mixed to one of the other options and got my last successful connection. Soon after that, the wireless connection dropped again and I've never been able to reconnect since, no matter what settings I specify. Windows Vista sees other wireless networks available (from neighbors' homes), but does not see my WRT350N even when sitting right next to it.
I've tried the EasyLink Advisor and it just says: "EasyLink Advisor could not establish a wireless connection to the Router." That's not very helpful. How can I restore a wireless connection from my laptop to the WRT350N?

Thanks, Helm, for your reply. Before seeing your reply, I called Linksys tech support and we got it working again. Basically, they had me clear the list of wireless connections under "manage wireless networks" in Vista. They had me change the security settings from PSK2 Personal and enter a new key. With that, I was able to get a wireless connection again. I told the tech that I preferred to stick with PSK2. So I switched back while he was still on the phone and got a successful wireless connection with PSK2. He suggested that my loss of connection in the first place was caused by the key being changed under PSK2 / AES and it was related to the key renewal period. It wasn't clear how to avoid encountering the trouble again. But at least I know how to recover from it should it happen again.

  • Unable to obtain ip with wireless connection to Netgear WGR614 router

Pardon my ignorance, I'm relatively new to the Mac world.
I recently purchased an iMac and at the same time purchased a Netgear wireless router.
When hardwired to the Netgear, I have no issues. I tried connecting via wireless, and keep getting the self-assigned ip address. My wireless network is detected and the Airport card connects...full strength. I also have a laptop running windowsXP, and it connects with no issues.
I have tried some of the suggestions mentioned in the discussions. Power cycled the Netgear. Changed channels...from 11 to 10. That didn't help so I went back to channel 11. I have security disabled...trying to keep the configuration as simple as possible until I can get this working.
If anyone can share some thoughts/ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    -Tim

I had to go into /Library/Preferences and dragged SystemConfiguration to my desktop. I restarted the iMac.
After it booted up, I went into System Preferences => Network; created a new Location and used the "Assist Me" tab at the bottom. It walked me through setting up the Airport again and this time it worked.
For anyone that does this, once you confirm your wireless connection is working, take the SystemConfiguration on the desktop and drag it to the Trash.

  • I cant connect to my wireless connection at home

i am trying to connect my airbook to my wireless internet at home. I am using a netcomm NB6W modem router. It has full strength on the bars in the menu bar, but when i try to open any internet pages it says i'm not connected to the internet. I have gone into the roouter settings and input the airbooks MACaddress/ Airport iD, it says it has been connected and still is connected but i am not able to load any safari or firefox pages. Everything worked fine for the last year but i have just swapped houses and internet providers, my PC that the router is connected to is connected and works fine. In network diagnostics, i've followed all the steps and still it doesnt work.
Can anyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me here?

I don't know if this helps, but bluetooth (the latest update) will knock the wireless right off. Is there a bluetooth cell phone, mouse, Motorola head set or printer near by?
Do you have an iPod touch or Nokia 770 device to test the wireless?

  • Lost wireless connection on a wrt110 router!

Oh HELPPPPP!   I lost my wireless connection last week, it just vanished!  Called Dell they couldn't figure it out, I worked on it I can't figure it out.  It was there then it was just gone!!  All drivers are updated, but I keep getting the error message " the network adapter intel(r) wifi link 4965agn is experiencing driver or hardware related issues"  ...   This is driving me nuts, any suggestions???

Well, this problem is not related with your Linksys router. It is driver error on your computer. I would suggest you check the Device Manager in WIndows to see if your wireless adapter in your computer was installed properly. If it shows a yellow triangle in the device manager you have to reinstall the driver.
