Getting wrong characters in PSE 8 (Mac OSX)
I think my problem is best described by reference to these two sample galleries:
Old gallery (PSE 2.0, Mac OS X.4):
http://www.huthyfs.com/axes
Note that é, e-acute, (images 2,3,4) is propery represented.
New gallery, same images (PSE 8.0, Mac OS X.6):
http://www.huthyfs.com/newaxes/instruments
(Version 2.0 does not work with Snow Leopard)
In Firefox you can choose either UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 and make the e-acute stink in two different ways. (The source code for
the html pages indicates UTF-8).
Swedish characters, like å (å), ä (ä), and ö (ö), are also distorted into square roots of various symbols.
I've asked Adobe Support about this problem and they've asked me TWICE to again describe the problem, explain what gallery program
I'm talking about (Bridge, is there any other?) and how I start it (choose Create Web Phot gallery, under File, is there any other way?).
After I've answered their questions twice they no longer answer. Anyone here who can explain how to solve this apparently simple problem?
Or is there simply no solution? In that case I've wasted the equivalent of $140 on a completely worthless product.
The computer is a recent iMac, but not the very latest model currently advertised on Apple's homepage.
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
The OS is Snow Leopard, X.6.1. I have a Swedish keyboard, including characters like å,ä,ö, the last three letters of the Swedish alphabet.
å follows p. ö,ä follow l.
Apart from that it is the international standard, I suppose: QWERTY ... There may be other differences from an American keyboard, e.g. I doubt that
shift-4 is a Euro sign, €, in the US ...
When typing captions into File Info these Swedish characters were translated into their proper html equivalents on the html pages, å ä ö in Elements 2.0
(which uses ISO-8859-1).
é (é) is alt-e. It's not a Swedish character, but it's used in proper names and imported words. When typed into
File Info in Elements 8 they are represented as these atrocious square root symbols in the html source. That should be visible in the sample gallery I linked to, "View Source".
When opening Bridge ("Create Web Photo Gallery") I can set "Language" and "Keyboard". The former is the language of the instructions, and I've chosen
English. I've set the latter to Svenska (Swedish) which does not help. There must be some option that I've overlooked.

keep getting "general installation error" message Mac OSX 10.8.5/Safari 6.0.5 Followed all the instructions for uninstalling and clean installing. Just wont install
Make sure you have it set to "show hidden files"
Check BOTH places and you have to restart Finder
Press "Quit This" and then go to the Finder Dock icon and right click it
Select "Open"
Open TIme Machine
Go back to September 28 or earlier.
You'll see the mach_kernel file in the Mac HD directory
(I can't show it in the TM because screenshots don't work while it's open but here it is in my MAc HD)
Right click it and select "Restore to"
Then, when it goes back to Finder, choose the Mac HD directory and click OK.
It will place the mach_kernel back where it was and you can install software again
DON'T FORGET to go back and hide your files (and restart Finder) again, or you'll have a mess with the clutter of hidden files everywhere. -

did it just start but began after "xyz"?
Have you run Apple Hardware Test?
Take out the ATTO card and / or boot in Safe Mode and things are fine?
And while the Nvidia 7300GT hasn't yet failed, might want to look into a replacement for it, too.

I have a new 21.5 iMac I just purchased July 9 so I was able to download Lion for free under the up-to-date program. After installing Lion I decided I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard for various reasons. When I restart with the original Snow Leopard DVD that came with my machine and holding the C key down, I get the window for Mac OS X install DVD. I click the icon to install SL and another window pops up stating "You can't use this version of the application. Install Mac OSX.app with this version of Mac OSX. You have to install Mac OSX.app 23.1.1" To answer the question before hand....I don't have a time machine backup.
Thanks for all your help guys. I had trouble with my first install of Lion, it seemed buggy and when I tried some of the suggestions you offered, my machine did not always react the way it should have. I thought that was weird because it's a new iMac, only three weeks old. Pondini pointed me in the right direction and I think Lion is stable now. This worked after a few tries, not sure why I wasn't getting consistent results but it worked eventually.
1. Shut the computer down.
2. Hold "command" and "R" and turn on the computer (I believe this is recovery HD from the internet because it wasn't working from my hard drive)
3. After a few unsuccessful tries, and repeating #1 and #2, I finally got a window to reinstall Lion. This took about an hour to download and after that things went as expected.
As long as Lion is more stable than it was on my first install, which it seems to be now, I'll just stay with it. After this experience, I would say "make sure you need the features in Lion, and that all your current programs are compatible with Lion before you forge ahead."
Thanks again -
How do I get icloud to work on mac osx v10.6?
My computer, MAC OSX v10.6.8 is not showing an icloud icon in Preferences. It has a mobil me icon but when clicked it says it has been moved to icloud. My ipad, iphone and Mac are not syncing. Help!
You need Core2Duo or better (i3/i5/i7) processor and 2 GB memory (but some would recommend 4 GB) ...
Apple Menu > About This Mac ... this is mine
As to "should I be scared?" ...
You sound like you mtch the first/major criteria ... you *need* it to synch with your mobile devices. Others are just "following the crowd" and have little other reason.
You should not be scared. Tens (hundreds?) of thousands currently run Lion without issue. And this forum helps with the issues you have.
You really need to have a good "clone" of your system beofre you start in case the process goes badly (rarely does it, but you want to be able to recover and start again). And there is a new set of "how to recover" in Lion becase it uses a "hidden partition" called "Recovery Partition" instead of disks ... but that is all just stuff to learn, not to be afraid of.
First, check the hardware, then post back if you wish. -
Recoveryng from a disk crash and Firefox icon in the genie bar vanished after running MAC Disk Utility and now has the "Application" (the A formed by a pen, pencil & ruler) icon instead. Will not launch. Need a version that will run Mac OS X 10.2.4. Is there page on this site to get a compatible version or some wherelse I can get one? Have very some old .dmg copies of earlier version 2.0.0.7 but can not find more recent copies or the one I was running befor the crash. I know , I know I need to update my old G4 but for economic reasons ( I do not have the $$) I can not do so now.
The last release to work on the old OSX 10.'''2'''.x was the old EOL Firefox 2.0.0.20
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/Firefox%202.0.0.20.dmg
Firefox 3.0, 3.5, 3.6 required Mac OS X 10.4 and later. Then for Firefox 4.0 and newer one needs '''Intel''' hardware and OSX 10.5+.

HP 8500 - Cannot get network folder for scans (Mac OSX 10.5.6) to work
Trying to get the network path set up for saving scans from the printer.....I've gone into the network (Ethernet, wired) configuration for the printer at its IP address from my MacBook Pro.
Under the setting where I create a network folder to store scans, I entered the network path to a folder on the mac, enabled file sharing, and entered my user name and password.
However, when I "Save and Test" (or Test and Save, whichever), it comes back saying the user name and password are incorrect.
Huh?
I've checked this a dozen times and also tried to prefix the user name with the machine name.
What's a little disconcerting is that the instructions on this Web page (for setting up the scan folder for the printer) say to enter the "Windows" user name and password. No mention of the Mac.
Not sure what's wrong.
I entered for the path:
\\MacBookPro\Users\Mork\temp
(temp is a valid folder)
I entered the user name and password I use to login to the machine
I then get the error.
Any ideas what's wrong?
I tried to use Mac paths with forward slashes, but the Website for the printer said this was an error right away.
(Confused).
Thanks.
- MThe support for the scanning is built into the Mac. This link tells you how to do it.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&tmp_track_link=ot_recdoc/c01627041/en_...
Go to the System Preferences under the apple menu.
Select Print & Fax
Open Scanner
Click Open Scanner
The last pull down menu on the left selects the folder. Change it to what you want and you don't have to worry about the network path and it will work!
To scan, click the scan button.
I tested it and it was such a relief to see the file appear in the folder. I hope this helps someone! -

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. -

Recently after i shut my computer off i have had a hard time getting it to restart and then once it does restart i get a message that say mac osx has unexpectedly quit, Why is this happening and what can i do about it?
THank you
Mac Book ProEileen, why do you unplug the computer? That's not necessary, unless you will be gone for days.
How do you turn it off? There's a right way and a wrong way. The wrong way is to do a forced shutdown by holding down the Power button. The right way is to select Shutdown from the Apple menu.
If the computer doesn't boot up properly you have some operating system problems and/or disk directory problems. That can result from forced shutdowns, power problems, or other events that change permissions, corrupt files or caches, etc.
It's time for some routine OS X maintenance. Launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume (probably named Macintosh HD) and run permissions repair. Then run verify disk. If an error is reported, insert your Installation Disc 1 DVD and reboot while holding down the C key. When the installation screen appears, go to the menu and choose Disk Utility. Select your boot drive and run disk repair. If no error is reported, run it again to be on the save side. (Note: if the disk repair routine reports that it cannot fix the problem, more drastic measures will be required. The full version of Tech Tools may be able to fix the problem. Otherwise, you may have to completely wipe your drive (you will lose everything not backed up to another drive or CD) and reinstall the operating system.)
Assuming the situation noted in parentheses above isn't the case, reboot and see if the computer is running properly.
I also recommend routine preventive maintenance with a utility such as OnyX (free) or C ocktail (shareware) that cleans out cache files and runs a number of maintenance processes. -
Wrong characters appear when typing on this discussion page
I was using safari on a power book (G4, processor 1.67 ghz, tiger 10.4.7) earlier today to try to download (unsuccessfully) some game demos, Myst IV and Myst V from macgames. Safari was terribly slow. It also crashed frequently and when I got on this discussion page to ask about this, as I was typing my concerns, the wrong type characters kept appearing--I would type the letter i and a 5 would appear instead. When I tried to use the delete button to erase the 5 the it wouldn't move.
I then got out of Safari and int word to see if I would get wrong characters in a document. The same thing happened. I kept getting a combination of letters and numbers in the document I was typing. I then shut down the power book and turned it back on without being online. I was able to type in word without getting the mixture of numbers and letters.
I guess I shouldn't use the power book to get on the internet. I know macs aren't supposed to get viruses, but could the problems safari is having be a virus or some other destructive thing? or perhaps my powerbook has a virus? I was planning to upgrade the imac's 10.1.5 to Panther and use safari as explorer doesn't work well with some websites and safari was reccommended. Perhaps I should stick with explorer 5.2
I have updated to 10.4.7. recently. Is there a safari update I need? I don't remember any of this happening before the update, however I rarely use the powerbook to get on the internet, so it could have been happening before the update to 10.4.7. Also since there is something wrong with safari, is there a different browser I could use with the power book? the imac has explorer 5.2. What about an anti virus program for the power book? Any suggestions or recommendations on how to deal with these problems would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ediththe wrong type characters kept appearing--I

This would indicate you have activated the feature which turns the right side of the keyboard into a numerical keypad. It might be Fn-F6 that controls this -- sorry I don't have a notebook and am not sure exactly how this works. -
Second display refresh rate lower in Mac OSX than Windows
I use a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB CRT monitor connected to my MacBok via a miniDVI to VGA adapter; I span the desktop on both monitors (i.e. I do not use the Mirror Displays option). I use this configuration in both Mac OSX and Windows (via bootcamp). On Windows, I can set the refreesh rate of my CRT monitor to 75 Hz at 1600x1200, but I am stuck to 60 Hz on Mac OSX at 1600x1200. To get a more respectable refresh rate on my CRT, I need to lower the resolution to 1400x1050.
Obviously, the video card of the MacBook can handle a second display at 1600x1200 at 75 Hz since I can do that on Windows. Any ideas how to get the same result on Mac OSX?Either DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X should be able to remedy this. But I am at a loss to explain why OS X would itself not allow for the 75Hz choice.

"Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer" Error
What Mac/Specs:
I am trying to completely clear out and reformat a 13" MacBook Pro 2.26Ghz with the 250GB hard drive (mid-2010 version) which had been running Mountain Lion to its "factory" settings.
Hurdle 1:
When I tried to reformat it I had the erase/partition options greyed out. Duh- needed to use a different start up disk.
Actions taken & Hurdle 2:
I then inserted the original disk (with OSX10.6) and started up with the C key held down but ended up getting the above error message "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer".
Actions taken 2:
I tried to "backup from Time Machine" (as that was the only option I could click other than restarting) and managed to access the Disk Utillity that way. I was then able to erase and re-partition the drive as Mac Extended Journaled and made sure that the S.M.A.R.T. verification was verified before I did so.
Hurdle 3 (= Hurdle 2):
This got me to the point of having a clean slate but the error message persists.
Question:
What can I do to move forward? I do not want to reinstall Mountain Lion, I want to pass on the computer restored to its original factory settings.
Please and thank you.Sorry for the late update- I ended up checking the disks (I have two MacBook Pros bought two months apart) and tried the other one. Turns out that though they were the same OSX (10.6.3 v1) they had different teeny serial numbers.
To answer BDAqua- yes, it was the disk for the same MacBook Pro model but clearly not "same" enough. And no- the disks had never been used. Pleased to report that it is all sorted now, but wanted to thank you massively for your answer anyway.

Continual problems with AAM/CC6 (Mac OSX)
I have been struggling for weeks trying to get AAM/CC6 working correctly (Mac OSX), following your Creative Community forum recommendations/discussion threads. But it just continues to be unreliable and buggy.
Current issues: My (Mac OSX) Application Manager shows that "Acrobat Pro XI" and "Muse" are installed on my system. But both are not installed on my system. When I try and do a manual download/install for Acrobat Pro XI, I get to the "Please Choose the copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro to update." But since it's nowhere on my system, I cannot continue and install. So I have no Acrobat Pro or Muse on my system. How can I get Acrobat Pro and Muse installed, and resolve these endless AAM/CC6 problems?Hi tom_inLA,
Please download Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool from this Link and run the same. Once done please login to creaative.adobe.com and download Creative Cloud Desktop App.
http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
It should show you Acrobat XI and Muse to install.
Please let me know if it helps

Abhijit
