Ghastly digital distortion while recording

I ran into a really bad problem tonight when trying to record and could use some sage advice.
I'm getting a lot of digital distortion when recording any audio on any audio track using either of the mic inputs on my Presonus Firebox interface. There's no noticeable distortion when monitoring the recording using hardware monitoring through the Firebox, but it's very noticeable on playback.
I've confirmed that this is not a gain-staging problem (the Firebox clipping indicator does not come on and the levels going into Logic were all well below -6dBFS), it's not a problem specific to a mic or to any mic, and it's not a mic cable problem either: it happens with DI'd guitars, vocals, you name it. It does not happen when recording an audio instrument, nor does it happen when playing back previously recorded tracks, nor does it happen when playing streaming music. I don't have an easy way of checking the line-level inputs on the Firebox, but if need be I can look into that tomorrow as well. I recorded with the setup successfully this morning, so the problem would have developed this afternoon or evening when I fired everything back up. And, FWIW, since running into the problem tonight I've successfully moved files to and from the Firewire hard drive I record to. If it's significant, I typically hot-plug the Firebox when shutting it down for the evening since it doesn't have a power switch .
I obviously have a nice long wait on hold with Presonus and / or Apple tech support to look forward to tomorrow, but for the meantime I'd love it if any of you could help me determine whether the problem is with my Macbook or with the Firebox. And if you are in possession of The Answer, please share it with me.
Thanks,
Trent

I've had a problem with going from GarageBand to Logic. Total distortion of audio in playback (didn't record anything new, just played existing audio). The simple fix is to open Audio Hardware and Drivers preferences and uncheck/recheck core audio. The handshake seems to take care of it. Not sure if this applies to you or not. I've a 002 rack for an interface.

  • Digital Noise While Recording

Hello - Any suggestions on how to solve the digital crackle/noise I'm getting while recording (single instruments and multi) into Garage Band 2? I'm using the Presonus Firepod on my Powerbook and recording onto a LaCie Firewire drive (should be fast enough), and it only seems to be happening on the mic channels, not on the line input channels. I can't seem to find any settings that would allow me to make a bigger buffer or something... looked around Audio-Midi Setup too...
All gear being used is high quality, i.e. it's unlikely to be the mics or cables (as far as I can tell).
    Please help, thanks!

Figured it out! It turned out to be something to do with monitoring and where the input/cue knob on the firepod was set. Back in business...
    Thanks!

  • High-frequency permanent distortion while recording through Line-In

    Hi Everyone!
I'm recording music from my MiniDisc Player connected with Audio Cable to Line-In port. I'm using Real Instrumen track for this. When I record or even only listen to the music I hear permanent High-frequency Tone in background. I can record with no problems but my recordings are always accopanied with this distortion. I've checked it out also on Windows (Boot Camp) and there are no such noices. Somebody knows what could help? Maybe it's something with audio drivers?

In Multitrack view, Options, there is a Monitoring option where you should be able to set Audition Mix to Always.
This doesn't appear in Edit View.

  • Digital@nywhere - ATSC : Channel does not stick while recording

    Hi,
My TV input is cable (analog).
While recording a channel, the channel switches automatically after 5mn or so. I have to stop recording, reselect the channel, are restart recording. Yet again the channel switches after a similar delay.
Did anyone experience such issue? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    OS: XP Pro SP2
    Intel Core Duo 2.4

    Much thanks!

Am I correct in assuming you are trying to use this card with cable TV input and not over the air? If so how do you have the cable connected? From reading the manual it looks as if this card is for over the air input not cable tho I could be wrong.
Are you able to watch TV (not recording) with it staying on channel?

  • Split Tracks While Recording w/MediaSource Play

I'm converting some cassettes using MediaSource Player. Can I split tracks while recording, i.e. record the whole cassette and then split that into individual tracks? I've done that with Microsoft Plus!, but can't seem to find that functionality with MediaSource. Also--if I want the absolute best quality recording of the cassettes, am I right in thinking I'd select WAV stereo, w/96.00 kHZ and 24 bits? The cassettes are li've recordings that I'd like to?have professionally mixed in a studio and then released as CD's, so I need the optimal "starting point" as far as the digital files are concerned. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, recording at 24/96 wave is the best that you can go with.
If you have one of the Creative sound cards, check whether you have the Creative Smart Recorder application. It has a split track function.

  • The tempo goes irregular while recording.... I have Logic 9 with a Presonus FireWire Console... can this be solved with a professional hardware clock? Thank you.

Hello... I use Logic Studio 9 and a Presonus Firewire console.... the tempo goes irregular (mostly slower) while recording... I guess this is due to any digital incongruence... I just need to know if this problem can be solved by using a professional clock (Apogee Rosetta, for example).. Thank you.

Probably the reason why no one has answered you, is because it could be a BAZILLION things.

  • Distortion while using live instruments

I bought my macbook about 4 months ago. I recently got an ART usb interface to hook up to my mac. After a few minutes of recording a guitar I began to get what I would best describe as digital distortion. I closed GB, reopened it, and the sound was fine for about a minute before it started to distort again. I closed GB again, reopened it, and the same thing happened again. I could be wrong but I think the problem is in GB. Does anybody have any suggestions? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am having the same problem, but with a Yamaha USB mixing studio MW10c.
Any live instruments is ok for the first one or two takes. After that, even in the middle
of the recording, the sound gets distorted. I have to quit GB and reopen it, then it behaves
ok for one or two takes.... very disapointed. Does anybody know if this could be a problem
with the MW10c? any help is welcome.

  • Plugging power cord while recording music - zero input

This is a strange problem when recording music via an interface:
When I am recording sound (Amadeus Pro) via a bus-powered firewire-S/PDIF-interface having my 2012 MBA on battery, and during recording I plug in the power cable, there is a complete zero input for one second or so (shown as -infin dB). Sometimes it goes with digital artefacts. Sometimes this also happens when doing other commands while recording.
    Possible reeasons:
    Core Audio goes down
power for the external interface goes off
I never had this problem with my earlier MBP and SL.
    Anybody?

Hi, Jim. Your guess is exactly correct. The DC-in card to which the port is soldered needs to be replaced. It will probably cost at least a couple of hundred dollars to have a technician replace it, or if you're handy, you can buy a used part and replace it yourself for about half that amount:

  • Distortion when recording

    Hi,
I recently bought a dv7-6135dx and I have been trying to record with Audacity. While recording everything is fine, but when I play it back it sounds very distorted. Audacity says that I have three options for recording devices. Microsoft Sound Mapper and Integrated Microphone Array both distort the audio, but Stereo Mix plays it back perfectly fine. I also tried an external mic, but that distorted it as well. Is there any way that i can fix this?

Uninstall the audio/sound drivers from Control panel completely and restart the computer. Install the updated drivers from here

  • Digital distortion workaround

Anyone know of a way to get around digital distortion in logic. I know that it shouldn't be done in the first place but sometimes it can be out of my control.
I have mild digital distortion happening in quite a few places in a recording, i know i can use the pencil tool to flatten them but there is 100's of these and it would take ages. just wondered was there a compressor that can smooth out above the threshold, or if logic has a feature built in much like adobe audition has.

Digital Distortion mostly occur when hitting over 0db or over compressing
is this audio file recorded like that?
there is not much you can do, just next time when you record stay safe, like around 3db and less on digital or to a computer
because hitting 0db on hardware/Analog is not the same as computer/digital
avoid over compressing or clipping before you record
get a compressor between your source and the logic so it controllers the dynamics

  • Volume levels while recording...

    Hi folks!
I know this may be quite basic, but I am curious about volume settings on the channel strip, master, stereo out, et cetera while recording. Are there specific settings one must consider before recording one of the Logic instruments into a track? The reason I ask is because I record an instrument into a track that seems to be relatively present with regards to the volume. However, when other instruments are recorded and the texture starts to thicken a bit, an instrument that once sounded relatively loud is now MUCH less audible, even with the slider almost all the way to the top on my controller. Is this just a natural thing that is manipulated with automation and plug-ins later on after the arrangement is done?
Also, I was wondering if volume automation prevents the use of a slider to increase or decrease the overall volume of the track. I would like to apply volume automation, but at the same time, be able to control the overall level of volume using my controller. That way, the automation would move in tandem with the set level from the slider. Right now, the slider on my controller has no effect on the track volume that has automation. I know this is basic, but I'm new...

    Hi there,
Here are some really useful threads at other discussion boards on this very topic. The main thing to remember is that tracking levels for digital recording do not need to be as hot as they do for analog recording, where signal-to-noise ratio is a greater consideration.
    http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=31541&highlight=trackinglowerlevels
    http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/15038/0/16/0/
These discussions get pretty technical at times, but the gist seems to be that for digital, you tend to get more in trouble at the "summing" stage (when things get mixed together) than with the recording stage where the noise floor is less of an issue. This could be why you're noticing what you're noticing?

  • Distorted / choppy recorded sound with Audigy 2 ZS and Vista 64-bit

Hi, I wonder if anybody has any idea of why this issue is happening. First let me give you my PC specs:
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 rev. 2.0
    Graphics: 2 x BFG GeForce 8800 GT 52MB
    RAM: 4 x GB G.Skill PC6400 @ 800 MHz
Sound: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
TV Tuner:? Hauppauge WinTV PVC PCI II (26xxx)
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP
?So here's the deal. I have no problems whatsoever with audio playback with this sound card. The issue I am having is while recording sound with it. When I record my voice via a Microphone with the Windows Sound Recorder and then play it back, my voice sounds very choppy. It sounds as if I was talking in front of a fan. The same happens with any program I try to use. If I use Audacity to record sound, the playback is also distorted / choppy. The main problem is with Skype, as I cannot use it to talk to people because they cannot understand what I'm saying because of the issue. Does anybody has any ideas why this happens? My PC is a dual boot PC with Vista 64-bit and XP 32-bit, and this issue only happens with Vista. Sound recorded plays back fine under Windows XP.
I am using the latest drivers available for this card from the Creative site.
    I'd appreciate your help,
    Daniel

A little bit off topic here, but 64bit does not mean more performance at all lol.
Sure, but there are in some cases drastic performence diferences. Under a fresh installed Vista X64 i have less CPU usage, as under 32 bit. But of course X64 uses more RAM (some tasks are double 32 and 64 bit). But the main reason I have more performence is, that the games I often play, get almost a boost. Dont ask me why, but under 64 bit EAW and FOC have the same FPS as under 32 bit. But under X64 I use a bit more Details and a higher resolution. (both are 32 bit games, so its a bit funy )?______________________?Sure there are other ways to install the drivers. But if some Setup dosent work, the first thing I try is to get it via Divice Management. And as this worked for me, I dont waste time to try other methods (Had bad experience, you can break the driver faster than install it *G*)?______________________?Some Questions I have left (after a few hours undr X64 with Creative Drivers):?Could it be, that the driver causes sometimes havy CPU usage?Could it also be, that the driver causes some lags, after you copy a file (the end sound, copy is finihed, but takes more time for "final finish", than without the drivers) - I know that Vista has some problems, on some PCs with copy, and that MS has an inoficial Patch (but dosent help for my PC so far)

  • Sound while recording with audigy 2 zs plati

i have the audigy 2 zs platinum. i'm using the /4" line in 2/mic in 2 to plug my guitar into. i can hear the guitar fine until i hit the record button on my software. it records what i'm playing, and will play it back with sound, but, again, no sound while recording. i also noticed there's no "li've" sound during playback. i've checked connections, and installed the latest drivers for the card. i'm using adobe audition 2.0 to record. please help!

Sure. Selecting "Line 2" records the signal just after it has entered the main CL chip, and selecting "What you hear" records the signal after it has been through the mixer/effects DSP in that chip. It's likely that CL lowers the volume a notch to reduce the chance of clipping from mixing/effects processing. Note that the signals at that point are 32-bit, so that some additional headroom really doesn't lose you anything; all you need to do is to raise the recording volume a bit to compensate.
The card's unity settings are designed for 50% on the recording slider and 00% elsewhere (i.e. there is a 2x digital multiplier on the recording slider). You may get some useful insights from a page I have: <a href=http://pages.sbcglobal.net/hamakerd/sbsrc/ target=_blank>http://pages.sbcglobal.net/hamakerd/sbsrc/[/url] by following the Additional Information link at the bottom, and seeing my comments (under the General heading) about how I determined the recording volume settings I used in that testing.
