Ghost circles and erratic mouse behavior

I have these light colored circles in the upper to middle left part of the screen and my mouse keeps jumping to these dots and I have virtually no control of my mouse. Is there a real solution to this problem as I have already hundreds of posts about it but no apparent actual fix.

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I have read your post on how ghost circles and erratic mouse behaviour appear on the screen of your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! To correct this issue, I recommend following the steps in this document on HP All-in-One PCs - Troubleshooting Touch Screen Issues (Windows 8). This should help return the functionality to your touch screen. I also suggest following the steps in this document on HP PCs - Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Troubleshooting, which should help correct the intermittent cursor behaviour. If the circles still appear, and the mouse still behaves erratically, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point before the issue occurred. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the problem continue, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return your system back to factory defaults.
If the issue continues, please contact our technical support for further assistance in this matter by clicking the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • IMAC and external screen--screen flickering and erratic mouse behavior

I have purchased a screen Medion 25.5 inch to connect it to my IMAC 27 inch.
I have noticed two unexpected behaviours:
    - from time to time, after the IMAC comes out of the SLEEP mode, the external screen is flickering, I need to put the IMAC to sleep one or several times before the display of the external screen becomes stable.
    - since I connected the external screen, the behavior of the mouse is highly erratic, eg when I move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter, the display of the mouse pointer moves by half a screen, or even disappears completely. I have performed many tests, with several apple mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse. As soon as I completely disconnect the screen (not only power the screen down) the mouse works normally again. I have now decided to stop using the external screen until a software update resolves the situation.
    Any advice?
    Patrick

When my 2008 24" iMac started to die from overheating, two of the symptoms I would see would be white flickering from the bottom going about half way up, like it was going blank and repainting the screen over and over. Also, the mouse pointer would jump erratically to all the edges and corners of the screen. After a few seconds, it might recover or it might freeze. I would use a program like iStat Pro to see what your temps are when you attach that screen. I suspect it may be excess heat due to the GPU now pushing two screens instead of 1?
Also try diags, and all those reset thingies people keep mentioning over and over.
First and foremost, if you have coverage, contact a "genius" and let him belittle you with his expertise.

  • Erratic mouse behavior

I have a MacPro running Leopard 10.5.8. Yesterday the mouse began behaving erratically. It seems to be perpetually trying to scroll down. It also won't allow me to select anything. The keyboard appears to be unaffected. I have tried 2 other manufacturers mouses and the same problem persists. I can only conclude it is some sort of software issue. The problem does not exist when I'm in Bootcamp running Windows XP. Anybody have any ideas?

Well, I tried that and it didn't work. I also uninstalled the Intellipoint (Microsoft) software that was controlling the mouse and that didn't work either. I've now got my wired Apple mouse attached to my Apple aluminum keyboard which is attached to my MacPro. Still no luck. It continues to behave very strangely. Any other ideas out there?

  • Mac Pro  Freezes/erratic mouse behavior

I've been using a Mac since 1997 and I have never seen anything like what my machine started doing yesterday. Yesterday the machine started to randomly freeze up. All windows become unresponsive as do menus and all keyboard commands. The mouse cursor still responds.
The first step I took was to boot from my Snow Leopard disc, rand disc repair and then permissions repair. This did not fix the problem. For some reason the apple menu seems to trigger some of the lockups, but other times it is another app. Finally I backed up my entire user directory. Then I booted from the install disc, erased the hard drive, and installed a clean copy of Snow Leopard.
It was most frustrating when after the clean install the computer froze in the same manner as before. I've tried resetting the PRAM also.
I'm open to any suggestions at this point. I'm an independent web developer, and having my machine down, is giving me an ulcer. Thank you in advance for anyone who can help.

    Hello there loneaggie,
I am wondering if you have had any luck fixing this problem as I have pretty much the exact same problem. The computer freezes but the mouse is still moveable. This happens pretty much randomly for me and about every 4 hour. I have run tests with pretty much all utility software that is out there with nothing popping up. I am using an older 8 core MacPro with an ATI 2600 graphics card.
The card's fan has begun to get quite noisy so I am guessing it might be overheating, especially since I have a full rack of 4 internal drives, including some high speed raptor drives which probably make things hotter than usual.
I'm going to clean things out with some compressed air but I'm wondering if you have had any luck with fixing your problem or where the thread this discusion was continued on exists?

  • JDeveloper 11.1.2.1, IE8 and erratic popup behavior

I am trying to do a simple proof of concept in JDeveloper 11.1.2.1 involving a databound table and a popup. I want to add a row to the table by filling in a form on the popup. The popup is opened via an action by clicking a button in the form. I used the Code Corner example #77 as a template for adding rows. Using IE8 (not in compatibility mode), I click on the "Add" button and the popup opens. However, error messages in the dialog also appear indicating that non-null fields require values. Here's where it gets interesting. If I create the exact same form, managed bean, entity/view objects in JDeveloper 11.1.1.6, then everything works fine while adding rows. I am guessing I am missing some sort of property setting, but I have yet to find it. I am new to JDeveloper/ADF. Form structure and managed bean code is below. Any ideas?

    Hi Frank,
Thanks for the reply. I retested with a .jspx file just to confirm my results. I've tried Facelets as well without success. Results for .jspx are as follows:
    1. If the add button PartialSubmit property is set to true, and the popup's ContentDelivery=lazyUncached, ChildCreation=deferred, and AutoCancel=disabled, then:
the popup appears with error messages outlining the required fields
    2. If the add button PartialSubmit Property is set to false and popup properties are the same as above then the popup opens as expected. However, if an attempt is made to insert a duplicate record - using departments table as an example, trying to create a row with an existing department - then a red box appears around the DepartmentId cell in the popup without any error message. If I press OK again, then the duplicate key error message appears as expected.

  • Erratic magic mouse behavior

Will anybody ever be able to decipher what the specific causes are for the erratic behavior of Apple's Magic Mouse? Personally I think it boils down to the Bluetooth Signal itself that can cause a lot of this erratic behavior, like in sudden sluggishness of movement. I see this behavior comes and goes as if some invisible force has suddenly intervened. My best guard against erratic behavior is to have the computer as close to the mouse as possible, even a foot or two. The further out the computer gets the more erratic behavior is likely, but like I said, even then it "comes and goes." Do you think it is the Bluetooth signal itself, because sometimes when it's become erratic I move the computer around, even which way it faces in relation to the mouse and I can suddenly "lock on" and the mouse returns to normal, only to have it start acting up again in a few hours or later on in the day or week or whatever. That's why I say the signal itself is suspect because I can effect the behavior by moving the computer around. Maybe the signal is effected by other components in the room like my TV or Audio Equipment or WIFI signals or remote controls.
I love my Magic Mouse and that is why I have put up with this erratic behavior struggle I'm constantly/periodically having, but I do wish this problem could be eradicated altogether and i could just use the mouse like it was intended. Incidentally, this is a brand new mouse I'm currently using that is at issue. All my other Magic Mouse have also done this exact same behavior.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3. I'm certain much of what you posted is definitely a likelihood for some of the issues. I have a lot of electronic equipment in this house, and yes, smart tv's connected to WIFI as well as other computers throughout the house. Apple of course does not mention any of this as possible issues as far as I know, the public, like myself, just assumes all will be wonderful. I know there are more like me out there if I'm having these consistent problems with all the Magic Mouses' I've owned. It really is attacking it from the SIGNAL side of things because I think that is the only issue that's going on. If it were addressed more, maybe even scientifically, maybe we could say, "well don't put it here, this can cause problems, and that TV, keep such and such a distance." Those are the types of guidelines that would be so helpful. But from what I'm seeing none of that is addressed at all (or for the most part). Anyway, I really want the wireless mouse world (specifically the Magic Mouse) to thrive. Every time I hook up a wired mouse I really feel the step back I'm taking and it's too painful! I've even went to the point, and I'll do it again if need be, of having my computer (Mac Mini) 2 inches from the Magic Mouse, that's when it operated at its very best. My only problem with that is it's somewhat impracticable, and I really don't think I should have to do that to have it work consistently.  Anywho, my two cents worth.

  • Why have my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse suddenly become poky and erratic?

Hi, I'm running a new mac mini (Dec 2014) with 10.10.2 on it.  Out of the blue today my Logitech wireless accessories (with unifying receiver) became very sluggish with overall slow response times and at times the mouse is completely unresponsive.  It really was working just fine until today.  I went out and bought a new mouse to see if that would rectify it - and I still have the same kind of odd mouse behavior.
What's different between today and yesterday?  I installed Dropbox and the new Microsoft '16 suite.  I can't imagine that those two suites would impact a keyboard and mouse.  I even did a refresh of the O.S.  Any suggestions?

Thank you for trying to assist me Bob.  Here's my EtreCheck output.

  • Erratic Mouse and Keyboard issues...with weird console log...

    Hello All,
I recently installed Snow Leopard on my 2x2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro following a boot drive melt down. Apple replaced the drive via Apple Care and I re-installed all my apps. The only additional item of note is I have Lycom SATA four port card that required a driver update.
Since setting up this machine with the new OS I am having massive issues with keyboard lag, erratic mouse movement and intermittent freezing.
I've run tech tools deluxe and everything passes with that app. I cant find the original install disks so running AHT on this machine isn't going to happen.
I've tried with and without the driver and the issue seems to still be there.
On a whim I opened console and I am seeing this message hundreds and hundreds of times over...
    8/8/10 2:21:11 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.xinetd.xinetd[2652]) Exited with exit code: 1
    8/8/10 2:21:11 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.xinetd.xinetd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    8/8/10 2:21:21 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.xinetd.xinetd[2655]) posix_spawn("xinetd", ...): No such file or directory
Anyone got any thoughts on this?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Jstys92,
Heat?  Motherboard?  Sounds like hardware since it's across Operating systems...
If you have a warranty, this is the time to call HP.

If not, I still think you have a HW issue.  It is relatively consistant, too.  Like something is breaking down - physically.  Not a disk - BIOS... notherboard... something that holds everything together.
Computers are not supposed to warm up and then start doing whatever they want.
We do not live it in that world, at least not yet.

You could run some Diagnostics.  The UEFI Diagnostics, if you don't already have them on your system, are very good and provide a decent "human interface".
    HP System Diagnostics (UEFI)
Description:   This package provides the HP System Diagnostics (UEFI) for the supported notebook/laptop models and operating systems. HP System Diagnostics is a UEFI-based hardware diagnostics program that is used to validate if a system is functional enough to start up the operating system. The diagnostics are accessed during startup by pressing F2 immediately after power on.

  • Odd/Limited Mouse Behavior

I have an intermittent problem with my mouse behavior in 10.6. Actually, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem in 10.5, it's just a fiendishly intermittent problem that has an as yet undetermined cause & solution. All I know is that it occasionally occurs and eventually resolves itself.
What happens is that I can still click things, scroll, right click to open a more extensive menu, etc., but certain ancillary (yet surprisingly critical) functionality stops working for a time.
For example, hovering my mouse over a link in Safari does not turn the pointer into a "hand with an extended index finger" or does not cause embedded pop up messages to appear (on sites I'm familiar with, no less, so I know they have them). On my Safari browser tabs, the 'x' to close individual tabs does not appear unless I first click on a tab once, and it closes when I click it a second time.
In menus - anywhere, not just in Safari - clicking on File or Edit or View opens the window, but selections do not highlight and track my mouse movements the way they normally do. This makes submenus impossible to use without clicking and holding once I reach the submenu I want to open, and releasing the click when I reach the option I want to select.
The Dock, which I have set to Show/Hide based on my mouse movements, will not pop up when I move my mouse all the way to the bottom of the screen. If I click my mouse once while the pointer is essentially invisible (being at the extreme bottom of the screen), the Dock will sometimes appear, but not always. When it does appear, the icons in the dock do not enlarge/magnify based on my lateral mouse movements the way they normally do.
In iTunes, when I'm watching a TV show or movie in full screen mode, the controller does not appear when I move my mouse the way it normally does.
    And so on.
I have never found a working remedy for this affliction, I usually just have to ride it out, i.e., I deal with the limited functionality until something decides to work right again. I have reset my mouse (it's a wireless Logitech mouse with five buttons, including the scroll wheel, but I had a wired mouse way back in Leopard), I have restarted my Mac, reset Safari, reset my System Preferences, repaired Disk Permissions, I have even junked the entire Preferences folder and restarted. I have also switched to different mice, but they have the same problem while the problem is occurring.
I don't believe this is a settings issue, I think it has something to do with Java or something, which occasionally goes on a holiday.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I've been enduring the issue the last day and a half and this is the longest it's ever lasted without correcting itself.

Check for any dust in the LED hole. Try using a plain surface, like a solid colored mouse pad, if the surface is on the shiny side. If that does not work...
Try starting up from Mac OS X installation disc. If the mouse is also erratic when booted from another system, you can rule out the 10.5.3 update as the cause.
If it works normally when you are booted from the installation disc, there is probably some issue with your current installation.

  • Sloppy Mouse Behavior in this OS

I've never been impressed with the mouse accuracy on Apple systems to begin with but it's gotten worse. I use a 40", Samsung, LED, LCD TV as a monitor for my Intel Mac Pro via an HDMI cable. This is a very expensive monitor. Ever since the past couple of OS updates to Leopard, I noticed the mouse behavior getting very erratic. Specifically I am referring to clicking to close tabs in the browser and nothing happens. Or in mail, I attempt to say highlight an email and it opens instead. Sometimes even multiple copies open. Highlighting and changing a file name is nearly impossible. The same goes for trying to drag or move files around in Finder.
This weekend I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard with no improvement.
I've tried changing mice. I've got a Logitech VX Nano laser mouse. A logitech optical trackball. And a Microsoft laser mouse. All behave the same. They have the exact same problems with or without their driver packages installed.
What's up with this? Does Apple test anything? After the experiences I've had with my Airport Extreme Router and the firmware upgrades, the constant file permission errors after patches, I really have to wonder.

Sorry, but I get the impression that you have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to drivers and their submission to Microsoft:
    http://dictionary.zdnet.com/definition/whql.html
Just for the record, I don't have any third party mouse drivers loaded in the OS. While I would agree that in order to get specialized functions on a mouse to work you may need a driver, but I would disagree that in order just get proper operation of the pointer and right and left click buttons that you should need a specialized driver just because it's from a different manufacturer, especially on wired devices.
This operating system is displaying the "i's" as "l's" in my RSS feeds on Safari. I guess that's someone else's problem too?

  • Why is mouse behavior so horrible in osx mavericks?

After "upgrading" to Mavericks, mouse behavior has become erratic regardless of what non-Apple mouse I use, wired or wireless (Logitech & MS).
    Behavioral issues encountered are:
    - Dragging and Dropping any items in any application including the Finder and Desktop is like playing russian roulette with a 9mm pistol. With the mouse button down, a release is registered and half a second later, another click is registered.
    - Clicks not being registered (mostly when trying to close Safari tabs)
    - Double clicking automatically happens about 50% of the time when only single clicks are inteneded.
With all mouse drivers updated (for every brand and model of mouse I've attempted to use), the same erratic behavior is randomly encounterd. I have already reset SMC and PRAM to no avail.
Are there some new settings I'm not aware of? Or should I just go out and purchase an Apple mouse?
Thanks for any advice/help on figuring this out.

Thank you William. I normally don't use the mfg's drivers as the OS native driver has always worked fine (minus the acceleration curve). But, due to the issues i'm experiencing now, am trying the mfg osx mavericks drivers and they aren't helping much.
    Thank you!

  • Erratic mouse response

Having mouse behavior problems which started about a week ago. Running an iMac 2.8 GHz. intel  core 2 duo with OS 10.6.8. The mouse ( Bluetooth) behaves erratically - skips, drags on its own, responds extremely slowly, then resumes normal behavior spontaneously. System prefs says the battery is 100%, Bluetooth says everything is connected. I have cleaned the reader window with Q-tips but the problem persists. Does anyone in this community have any suggestions for me on what else I can do to correct this?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Want to add what has been unsucc tried the last day: Completely de-installed QT and iTunes, cleaned with MSI clean-Up-Utility 2, cleaned registry, restarted pc, installed QT stand alone, restarted pc, installed iTunes - and guess what: did not help!
Apple makes me really mad - going to kick out this crap...
Does anybody have the 6.x installation files?

  • Erratic mouse bahavior

    Hi all,
As Arch isn't my main distro it isn't a disaster when something breaks, so I recently ran a full system upgrade to KDE 4.2 and xserver 1.5. At first my mouse and keyboard didn't work which was due to the new X hotplugging features. I decided to turn hotplugging off (as per the wiki page), which solved the keyboard issue but not the mouse. I then tried the xf86-input-evdev driver, but still my mouse shows erratic behavior, generating random click-events and frequently crashing X rather badly (i.e. requiring a hard reset). Does anyone have any idea what could cause this and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Dirt and debris lodged beside or under the keys, button switches, and trackpad can cause erratic operation. Or the battery may be swelling and distorting the trackpad and/or keyboard. It depends upon the model.
If you have a MacBook with a removable battery, shut down your Mac, remove the battery, reconnect the power adapter, turn the computer on, login, and see if the erratic mouse and cursor problem goes away. If the problem goes away, your battery is likely swelling. If the battery is swelling, it needs to be replaced.

  • Can only draw circle and square in Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS5

I am experiencing a strange bug that seems to be affecting both Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5. In Illustrator, when I try to draw a rectangle or ellipse I can only draw circles and squares. Also I can't change the color of selected objects. When I try to change its fill nothing happens. I can also only drag objects on the 0, 45 and 90 degree angles. Also I can no longer select off an object by clicking on the artboard. When I click on the artboard nothing happens.
Similarly in Photoshop I can only draw straight lines using the brush tool. The  marquee tool is also not functioning properly. When I try to use the marquee tool the marching ants form a square but when I release the mouse it selects a rectangular portion. Strangely if I use the marquee tool and make selection I can press the shift key and add to it but this second selection's marching ants are not square but are properly rectangular.
Since the problem seems to be affecting both Illustrator and Photoshop I'm thinking it's probably some kind of system conflict or perhaps an application running in the background is affecting it. Also if I restart my mac the problem goes away. Unfortunately the problem eventually returns.
Anyway I'm pretty sure most of the suggested fixes involve systematically going through all the programs running in the background and trying to determine which if any might be affecting Illustrator and Photoshop but I just thought I'd post something in case someone else had the problem or knew of any fixes.
    I'm running CS5 on a MBP.
    Thanks!

Ok I figured out the problem. It was another application called teleport which lets you control 2 macs with one mouse. It requires a hot key and in my case that was the shift key. Even though it was running it was still affecting me. Had to quit it and restart. If you're having a similar problem I'd check to see you're not running any other applications that can be activated with a hot key.

  • Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse (Bluetooth) Problems

    Hi folks,
I recently got a new Mac Mini, wireless keyboard (Apple) and Magic Mouse. During high LAN activity, the keyboard and Magic Mouse will often lose connection and will have trouble re-connecting even when LAN activity goes back to basal levels. If they do not lose connection, the performance becomes terrible and both lag significantly during use.
This behavior does not happen on my MacBook Pro.

    Other things to check-
Do you have anything on top of your mini, or is the top of the mini under a desk or other obstruction? The bluetooth antenna is (as you are looking from the top down at the mini) to the top right of the Apple logo on the plastic case top. Try clearing any clutter (if there is any), or establish a clear line of sight with your keyboard and mouse to the unexposed top of the mini and see if the dropouts occur.
Also, microwaves wreck havoc with bluetooth. Any machinery in the same room as your mini and keyboard/mouse?
