Ghost data on HDD

Hello everybody!
On my newly bought iMac I am experiencing a weird thing when I check how much space I have used on my harddisc. (By the way there is both a SSD and a HDD built into my iMac.)
When I check how much space I have used on my HDD (which should be empty) the information window tells me that I am using 663,8 MB of disc space even though I haven't used the disc! When I open a window to see what the disc contains, the windows shows nothing. I have just installed Lion, but after a check in the Terminal I found that the recovery part is on my SSD. I am now wondering what the 663,8 MB of space is used for.
Every helpful reply will be appreciated.

That space is used by the directory and special system files.

I have like five GB's of ghost data (data the device claims is not there but it is still taking up space) on my I pad 2 from a failed movie download attempt. How do I fix that with out resting my iPad? I have only 1GB left of storage
The movie had gotten to the point that I could watch it all the way through but it still said processing and got stuck at that point and when I turned off the wifi to try to restart it, it deleted its-self but did not free up any of the storage It was taking up
Restarting my iPad does not help
Some thing similar also happened to my old laptop when trying to download the iOS 5 update to my laptop when it came out. It kept getting disconnected and every time it would try to start over and act like what had already been downloaded was not there though it was still taking up the storage space.
And it continued repeating until it took up all of my storage space. The data file would not show up anywhere so I had to restore my laptop to the factory settings and that worked for awhile but I eventually had to get a new laptop.

Did you try to set it up as new device, as explained in this article?

If this does not work, use iTunes to set it back to factory settings, which would also install the latest software:

I installed XP @Bootcamp, I cant access my Mac HDD via XP..

You can try DiskWarrior (about $100).
If that doesn't work, and if you have no backups at all, you might need to send your hard drive to Drive Savers or a similar service. It will cost a lot of money to get the data back, I'm sorry to say.

  • Re: How to restore data after HDD format?

    hi, folks
I need your help to restore some important data that gone after hdd formatting.
I didn't make any backup that was my mistake.
    Everyone's help is appreciated.
    Thanks to all.

    Hi,
it's already late to say but it's always recommended to backup data on the external medias. First of all, don't touch your hard drive, I mean don't format/move partitions. Once, i had the same problem while creating acronis recovery zone on the hard drive. Something gone wrong and I lost some data that I wouldn't mind but I also had some files from webmoney system (its' virtual money that you can exchange for real one). I tried many programs like Ontrack.EasyRecovery.Professional and e.t.c. Only with Power.Data.Recovery software could restore it. note, it's not free but Google can help you

  • Need to recover OS but don't wont to lose data on HDD

    Dear All!
For the long time now, I was trying to disable a trojan or a worm, on my WXP (Home!) i.e. get rid of the cftmon_.exe, when I decided to follow the instructions from Symantec and manually deleted parts of the register, I guess that it was USERINIT part ( turning off the System Restore before and turning it on after the deletion).
It may be as well that I did not do something right, following the fact that I would be logging off the moment that logging on process has started. This is relatively known issue here, with different options.
    - I need to keep data at both HDD's.
    - I have no other partitions.
    - I do not know what free space I have on one of them, which I could eventually use for the Expert recovery mode.
    a. Following the fact that I want to take the option with Toshiba Recovery DVD, i.e. Expert mode ( http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2513&tstart=125 ) as a last one,
    b. I have trouble with installing Recovery Console (with original Windows XP CD (Professional!), "R" to "repair), but I would get the message "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer"...
I understand that I would need to install the RAID driver ( http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=20093&messageID=73758 ) but I am afraid that this may delete the data on the disk.
    My questions are following:
    1. Will installing the RAID driver (downloaded from the Toshiba off web site http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/updates/raid-drv/raid-drv-qog20-xp-1380.zip and installed over FDD I guess) in order to hopefully install Recovery Console, and do the rest of the job, make the data from my 2 HDD's disapear (delete)?
    2. If I eventually use Toshiba Recovery DVD, i.e. Expert mode what size of partition should I save for the mirror on the half-empty 1.HDD?, should I make the partition at 2 HDD, after backing it up and counting that the data will be lost? Should I select any special setings during the process, apart from those mentioned at the link above? What should I do after-wards? Can I build the damaged registry when logged on and how? will I be in position to use personal and archive data from the Microsoft Outlook?
    3. Is there an alternative with UBCD4Win and UBCD? Which one is better? What is the procedure after booting CD's after the restart? How do I get to copy/repear userinit files?
I do apologize for load of information, but I am quite stuck. All the data needed for my normal life are buried there !!!
Many thanks to JohnnyS, tw, Quad, Eldorado and Others!
    Cheers!

    Hi friend,
I like to answer on postings like yours, its a good exercise for my work and its really cool to have some topics where all people here will contribute.
JohnnyS is a friend of mine which is working with me at our office and we talked a little bit about your problem.
So his opinion was to use the UBCD4Win and work with that option.
    The advice of him was:
Grab a USB-HDD case and put one drive in it and boot with UBCD4Win. Then copy all important data to a folder on the external HDD and remove the uneeded data on it. Just the important data!
Make a backup of your data on the external drive from both HDDs. I hope you will have enough free space.
Format the drive in your machine and recover it. Install the system as usually on your first HDD.
Then put the data to where you want.
So I am not sure if I understanded your question right, a little bit more explanation would be useful. I think that will be a long thread. ;)

  • Can you reliably erase data after HDD disc i/o error?

My HDD has failed with disc i/o error on my 24" Intel based iMac.
Does any one know if Disc Utility can reliably erase data despite the hard drive failure?
I'm in the process of disposing my iMac and want to make sure all my data is securely erased before doing so. Otherwise, I'll need to resort to physically removing the drive.
    Thanks!

If you zeroed the disk using the security option (which you did) and it succeeded, then the bad sectors were likely remapped to spare sectors. However, you might want to check it periodically to see if the drive continues to develop bad sectors. If it does it's actually likely a mechanical failure in the process of developing.
I use a product called Scannerz to test my drives, and the repair procedure they recommend is to do what you've done but using only a single zeroing pass. After such an event occurs they recommend testing the drive periodically at increased intervals for a while to verifiy that more sectors aren't going bad. If they are it apparently indicates bearing wear and either the platter is wobbling enough to cause the heads to crash onto the platter or the bearings in the actuator arm are going bad with the same result. They have a fair amount of information on their web site at:
    http://www.scsc-online.com
either in their how-to section or in the downloads section. I know I remember reading this stuff there but I don't remember which document or how-to article had the information.

  • SSD as system disk while users folder + data on HDD

Hey there, I want to install SSD in my Mac Pro and since its only 120GB - use it only for system and Apps. While all my user data (photos, movies, music random files) I want to store on my HDD. Is it possible to do it that way, so the system knows where it should put Apps and where downloaded content and all the other stuff should go?

~/Library is hidden unless you unhide. It HAS to exist where user accounts are.
The link is not what you want, it is hybrid SSD Fusion HDD setup.
I leave ~/Library where it is, right, and don't worry and just link to other hard drive - after playing and trying to move user account to another drive, I swap boot drives a lot and it was easier.
NetInfo and later Accounts control panel and now is it "Users"? but it is easy for anyone to point to another disk drive.

  • Qosmio G35-650 - Do I loose my data on HDD?

Ok. I tried everything to repair an XP install on my Qosmio G35-650.
The recovery disk was a joke and wouldn't work...I decided to skip all of the DMI junk I read about and clean install a copy of XP.
Put the Raid drivers on a floppy and proceeded with the install. Setup would not install on the boot partition and gave me a "page_fault" error. I went into the bios and changed disk 0 to JBOD from RAID, disk 1 was already set to JBOD.
Reentered setup and at the point where you select the partition to install to only one partition was shown.
This was not a good thing as I backed up all of my data from the C: drive (Disk 0) to the F: Drive (Disk 1).
I went back to the BIOS and set Drive 0 back to Raid and started the Setup procedure over again.
Two partitions were showing this time but Disk 1 was not showing an F: drive designator.
The question. Did I lose all of my data on the second 100gb drive in the system?
    Is my F: drive recoverable?
    Help!

If you change the RAID settings, it will wipe the data. Generally all RAID systems wipe the data when they are created.
But you may have a chance to recover most of the data. There are data recovery programs/utilities that scan the HDD for file fragments and attempt to recover your files (at least the files that have not been overwritten yet). Search google for "Hard Disk format data recovery"
Why didnt you use the Recovery Disc? If the DMI is incorrect, you can simply download a DMI tool to update the product name to "Qosmio G35" or "Qosmio G30".
The tool can be found on the Toshiba America website.

  • HomeFusion Ghost Data Explosion

We have had HomeFusion installed now for not quite 2 full weeks and while the signal and speed are a huge improvement over the Mifi that I was using, the data being falsely logged against my allowance is insane!
In the first 4 days I received the message that 50% of my 10GB was used... previously with a 4510 MiFi I was using approximately 5GB total per month.  That was even with keeping the  MiFi on continuously.  Obviously data on the HomeFusion is counted differently (possibly with a multiplier as high as 3x) as my usage pattern has not changed. The fact is that my data usage should have gone down in the last week since the the home laptop that I use had a HDD failure and has not been operational.  I have also started unplugging the HF cantenna so it is not making connection with the tower and only have the HF on for 7 hours in a day.  Previosuly the MiFi was never turned off unless it was busy resetting itself or searching for a signal.  Since turning off the system for the majority of a day,  the data usage seems to have dropped some but I was greeted this morning with a message that 90% of the monthly data allowance has been used.  There is no way that I should be anywhere near that...
While the connection and speed is nice, the false data reporting needs to be fixed whether this is a deliberate flaw or an issue with the system Verizon needs to get it together.

Because the FCC is completely and utterly spineless and has failed rural and semi rural America.
The majority of the people on HomeFusion would prefer to have either Cable, DSL or Fibre.
Unfortunately, their internet options are limited to a combination of Dialup, Satellite, Wireless or moving...
Dialup is rapidly becoming a nonviable option.
Websites and software patches are increasing in size and online gaming bandwidth requirements have grown too.
For a >56kbits/sec internet connect, it's bloody expensive due to the phone line (free local calls) and ISP costs.
Most wireless companies no longer provide unlimited data on new plans.
Plus, it depends on what wireless services are available in your location.
Data quotas cost about the same rate on both Satellite and Wireless 3G/4G.
However, assuming you get a good signal, wireless has the advantage of much lower pings.
Low pings means VOIP and competitive online gaming.
Currently, I would not recommend HomeFusion because of a disconnection issue being experienced by many users.
Hopefully, Verizon claims they will resolve this issue in the next few weeks...
Finally, moving is flipping expensive and I really do not want to deal with neighbours!

  • Transferring data from HDD used in PC (Windows)

Hello! I have recently switched from PC to Mac. I have learnt a lot and I like Mac. Now, I want to transfer some of my data (pictures, movies, docs) from the hard drive I have used in my PC. Because my PC is dead I removed the hard drive from it and tried to use External Enclosure from Safecom company. I did everything exactly it said in manual, but my iMac does not see it at all. I've tried to switch jumpers over on the hard drive, tried different cables (USB and FireWire) but no result whatsoever although the hard drive is working when switched on and everything seems good.
My hard drive is Western Digital WD 800, formatted with NTFS and partitioned 30x50 Gb. There is Windows installed on 30Gb partition.
I have read many topics but have not found the answer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot.
P.S. My iMac is Intel based.
iMac Core Duo 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iMac Core Duo 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You don't describe precisely what happens when you attach the drive and power it on. Does it simply do nothing at all?
My first reaction, if you see nothing happen at all would be that the drive enclosure might not be functioning properly or the drive may not be firmly connected to the controller inside the enclosure. Just like RAM sticks needing to be firmly seated in a machine to work, drives in an enclosure need to be properly and firmly inserted to function (check both the drive cable and the power cable). Drives in enclosures generally need to be jumpered for "Master" but some models prefer "Cable Select).
I would suggest taking the drive to another computer (possibly a PC) and plugging it in and see if it operates properly.
The Mac can read NTFS but not write it by default (though you can use MacFUSE to gain read/write access with some minor difficulty).
Let us know how it works out.

  • Apple TV loose Datas on HDD sometimes

    Hello together.
I've sometimes the problem, that Apple TV is loosing the Files on Apple TVs HDD. I starte Apple TV, but it's empty. That i look into the iTunes settings and the syncronisations is away. Then I start on Apple TV the synchronisation new, and they is running. On my MacBook is only "streaming" pushed. Another problem is, that the firewall wants every time to write the admin passwort, if I start iTunes. On my G5 and the MacBook it's the same. I've set in my system that I decide who came in my firewall on OS X (10.5.2). Now I set, that the firewall ist open. I'll see what happends.

  • How to transfer data from HDD to SSD?

    Hi everyone,
I'm planning to upgrade my Mac Book Pro (13-Inch, Late 2011) by switching the default HDD with a new SDD. I've been told that with my generation of MBPs, I can remove the optical drive and replace it with a SSD and have two drives in stead of just one. Someone even told me that I can put the current HDD in a caddy where the optical drive is, and put the new SSD in the current HDD slot.
I would like to know which SSD would be the most suitable for my computer, I was looking to have a 512MB storage SSD, but I don't know which brand is the best.
I would also like to know, how to transfer all the storage from my current HDD to the new SSD, because I'd want to use the new SSD as the default one. I have an Apple AirPort Time Capsule for my Time Machine back ups. Is it possible to restore an old backup from the current HDD to the new SSD using Migration Assistant?
I would really appreciate the help. Thank you!

  • How do I properly set up a HDD for ghosting?

Im in need of some guidance. I am ghosting an older HDD from and older PC to a new HDD in a newer PC. I have run in to the problem of my new HDD after the clone is not booting. I now know ( I think) it is because I didnt run a sysprep. The new HDD will boot in the old PC just fine.
This is my first time doing this so I expected something to go wrong. I would like to know the proper steps to take in preparation. I dont know how to use sysprep and google is getting a little confusing.
How do I use sysprep to get my HDDs ready?
Do I sysprep the source drive or the destination drive?
I am using symantec ghost to clone the drive and I did not plan on imaging. I was just going to do a straight clone. Thank you in advance.
