Ghost files downloading at random from Safari?

Okay, so I already realize my computer has passed its prime and is on the downhill (it's a steep one too), but I am trying to make it last. So, before I'll ask my question I'll let you know that my computer is only running on half RAM (512 instead of 1 G) because the lower ram slot is dead.
Ok. So, lately whenever I get on Safari, I'll get these random "files" download on my computer. Usually they'll say something like "b-ashx", or "b-ashx-1", etc. Lately I got another one like "desktop1-1" or something like that. I'll click get info on them, but there's nothing on them. They are 0 kb on the HD. Can anyone explain what my computer is doing downloading these files from Safari at random??? I would appreciate it!

Regarding Safari, it appears this started happening with Version 4.0.x. One fix was to install a downlevel Safari - Here's a link to 3.1: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/safari311.html .
The filters referenced seem to only work for Firefox. One thread on those is http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-viewforum_thread.php?locale=uk&commentsparentId=359430&forumId=1

  • Can't Download a PDF from Safari

I can't down load a PDf file from Safari on my home computer. I have figured out that If I change the location that the file is being saved to, and hold down the control key while clicking the link, and choose save PDF, I can do it, but why can't I just click the link and have it save to my desktop. I can also open internet explorer and simply click the link and it saves to the desktop.
These 2 options are to complicated for my husband who is not as familiar with computers in general, and he wants to know what I did to make it not work!
I thought it had something to do with the permissions, because for some reason they are all grayed out, but the permissions are grayed out on my computer at work too and I can save a file to the desktop there.
    Any ideas?

    nibashki,
Are you logged in with an Admin account?
Navigate to HD > Users > Your Home Folder > Library > Preferences.
In that folder, click on com.apple.desktop.plist, to highlight.
Depress the Command and i (eye, not el) keys, to Get Info.
Click on the disclosure triangle for Ownership & Permissions.
Does is say: You can Read & Write?
Click on the disclosure triangle for Details.
Is the Owner your account, with Access: Read & Write?
Is the Padlock open or closed?

  • Cannot view or download PDF's from Safari

Hi. I got a new MacBook Pro with retina display this summer... love it. A few weeks ago I joined Creative Cloud and upgraded my Adobe software; all software worked fine up to the CC upgrade. So details are: Mac OS 10.8.5, Safari 6.1, Acrobat X1 Pro.
Now when I am online and there is a pdf to either view or download from Safari I get the following warning:
    Adobe PDF Document
There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader
If it is running, please exit and try again. (1:9)
I have quit Acrobat and tried again, I have reinstalled Acrobat from CC. Nothing changes. Please help.
    Thanks - Lorraine

Usually, this message occurs with Windows. First time I've seen it with OS X. Looking into it.

  • Re: iPhone 4 - Cannot download a game from Safari

Re: iPhone 4 - when click on a game in Safari that I would like to download it opens a black screen in the AppStore saying my request could not be completed! How can I fix this? Is there a setting or something?

But why does websites like Gameloft etc have games for iPhones if you can't download it?
And there are a lot of ads advertising games for iPhones, but if you click on the ad it brings up that screen again!
And the AppStore doesn't have a lot of games, it has quite few cheats and tips for games but very few games.
How do you download games from Gameloft then?
Can you download it on your computer & sync it to your phone?

  • Can't open files saved from Safari

In SL, I have a new problem with files that are saved from Safari.
I first noticed it with an Automator service I made, which took selected text and made a text file out of it. But I eventually discovered the problem seemed to be with Safari. Any time Safari saves a file -- if for example, I click a link and it downloads a .zip file, then there is something wrong with that file that prevents me from opening it in another app.
When I try to open the saved file, either by double-clicking in the Downloads window or from the Finder, the target app just starts bouncing in the dock and never opens. I have to force-quit it. If the target app is already open, it switches to it but never opens the document.
This is only for files that were saved by Safari. Other PDF's and zip's open just fine.
And, if I manually launch the target app, and then go to Open... and navigate to the saved document, I can open it fine.
Files saved from Safari seem to have something wrong with them. If I quit Safari, logout, or even reboot, they still refuse to open by double-clicking.
    What could be causing this?

    Reset safari
    Safari/Reset Safari
Go to Your HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ and remove to trash the "AdobePDFViewer.plugin".
Open Safari and a .pdf and it should now open with Preview in a Safari/Browser window.
    If not then re download

  • Music-Download from Safari goes directly to iTunes. Disable it?

    Hello dear users
Always when i download some tracks from safari, the data starts to play. Due to that reason it's automatticly linked with iTunes. How do i disable this issue?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Greetings
    Nortenmind

    Hello Eustace Mendis
Thanks a lot for your request. It helped me a lot.
Actually this didn't solve the problem, but just below the line "Save downloaded files to:" I found a option to disable. Due to my translation skills from german into english it should be: "Automattically open downloaded files"
Now all files won't open by themselfe after downloading it. This means, that the Music-Data doesn't go directly to iTunes . So I can tune the file before I drop it into iTunes. Perfect!
    Greetings

  • Can a Quicktime file download from clickable link?

Quicktime file download to desktop from clickable link?
I have large movies that I want to make available for direct download to the desktop so people will click download and do something else.
It is my understanding that you can't provide a quicktime file for download to a desktop because there are PC/MAC and browser issues across platform. But maybe I'm wrong.
Is it possible to make a web page that allows users to download higher file size videos from a clickable link? The quicktimes are h.264 in SD + HD around 50-100 megs. The files will be so large people won't want to wait so I want it to go directly to the desktop.
So far I can only find a few similar options
    1) Embed the file in a web page. Provide a download link after the movie loads.
(This option requires you to load the file into the page. Users may not wait and close it)
    2) Provide a zip file. This allows you to create a clickable link to the zip which begins downloading upon clicking. You then unzip the file. (Some less computer savvy people may get confused by the zip)
    3) Put a raw file on server. This will play the movie in a blank window but can also be right clicked for direct download.

    Welcome to the discussions, jessestudio.
I've seen a few sites that have a link to the video with instructions to "Right-click to download". Essentially, it's option three with instructions. It seems to be a fairly common way of handling it. (Even for non-QuickTime movies)

  • Printing a pdf from Safari 4

    Hi
If I print pdf files from within Safari 4, the text does not print at all, only lines, tables and boxes.
If i save the same pdf file to the hard drive and open it with Adobe Reader, it prints perfectly. Is there anything obvious that I am doing wrong?
I am using SL, and a Lexmark c522 if it helps.
    Thanks
    Dave

    Hi...
I couldn't see anything wrong with my Arial font, so I looked back on Time Machine and my "Arial Narrow" had been moved to a Fonts Disabled drawer in Home/Library....
I have now reinstalled Arial narrow and sure enough, Safari looks right, but now Font Book won't validate the Arial Narrow font, saying some problems may occur and to proceed with caution.
In addition, I was a little pre-emptive with my initial hope that .pdf files were prinitng correctly from Safari.. they're not still
Is there a nuclear option to re-install all fonts from scratch?
    Thanks again

  • Can I copy my bookmarks from Safari to Firefox if they are on the same computer?

I would like to use Firefox and I want to '''copy''' the bookmarks I have in Safari. I have a Mac with OS10.6 and both Safari and Firefox are on the same computer. I want to know if Firefox is more friendly since I do a lot of writing.

You should update to Firefox 6.0.1 through Help > About > Check for updates
before testing rather than be disappointed with a Firefox update after testing.
All browsers can use the Netscape bookmarks formatted HTML file to copy bookmarks. But according to documentation you can import directly from Safari. Hopefully that applies to your Mac, because it is not shown as an option for me on Windows 7.
'''Import bookmarks''' - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_bookmarks#From_Safari
"'''Firefox imports Safari settings automatically'''. Just go to File > Import... and select Safari. In the next window, check the boxes of what you want to import. For example, your Safari Bookmarks will appear in Firefox's Bookmarks menu as "From Safari." Whatever other bookmarks you had on your Safari Bookmarks Bar will automatically appear on your Firefox Bookmarks Bar, too. "
    If that does not work:
:'''Exporting Bookmarks from Safari:''' (from Safari Help)
    # Choose File > Export Bookmarks.
    # Specify a location for the exported file. The file's name will be "Safari bookmarks.html." Most browsers are able to import this type of file.
    '''Importing Bookmarks into Firefox:'''
#"Command+Shift+B" to bring up Bookmarks Library List, can be done from Bookmarks menu > "Show all bookmarks"
    # "Import and Backup" menu > Import HTML > From an HTML file
#: (unless you see From Safari)
Firefox uses the same keyboard shortcut to display menus as used on Safari (on a PC it is the "Alt" key).
Firefox is highly customizable, so you can change the appearance, and a lot of what would be done in other browsers must be done using extensions in Firefox, but the extensions for the "same" feature probably give you a lot more functionality and control. In the following making Firefox look more like 3.6 would be of interest if you are used to other older browsers -- Safari grew up independently so other browsers are more alike.
You can make '''Firefox 6.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. ''Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.''

There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional. (later on)

  • When downloading a file from Safari, it goes to downloads and you can't re-name the file before it is saved

I am new to MAC and have trouble when downloading files from Safari that I want to save to a particular folder with a new name.  Can you do that without first saving to downloads, then moving the file to the documents stack, then changing the name?

Although the right-click contect menu has "Download linked file as" and you would think that would allow you to rename the file as it is downloaded, it always gives me a useless html file.  Maybe I am misunderstanding what that menu item actually does. I long ago gave up on renaming files during download. So I'm as curious as you about whether it can be done.

  • After downloading a pdf from a website, how can I view the file in Safari 6.0.4 (just as I can in Safari 5.0.6)?  I bet that it's simple, but I've missed something, somewhere, and a solution will be greatly appreciated.

After downloading a pdf from a website, how can I view the file in Safari 6.0.4 (just as I can in Safari 5.0.6)?  I bet that it's simple, but I've missed something, somewhere, and a solution will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Kirk,
Thank's for your efforts, and I just wish that this was the solution.  Unfortunately, it isn't because, after double-clicking on the pdf in the website, it simply "opens" in another Safari window as a black screen - the pdf is there, somewhere, but not visible (either as an icon, or as a document).
When I right-click in the black Safari window, where the file is supposed to be, the only option available to display the file is to "Open file in Internet Explorer" (which is not what I want to do).  Other options include saving or printing the pdf, which I don't want until I've confirmed that it's the form that I want.  The same options are offered if I right-click on the file icon in the website.
    Any other suggestions, please?
