Apologies for replying to my own question, but a few more minutes of digging around and I got the answer...

The first songs i've downloaded and synced with my new touch have created ghost songs.  They are only on my computer in itunes once but appear on my ipod twice, one copy that won't play.  I can't delete them.  I've tried unticking all the music that was on the ipod via itunes and re-syncing, which in theory should delete all music from my ipod.  It does except for the 5 ghost songs.   So at present I have no music on ipod except the 5 ghost songs.   Has anyone got any ideas how I can get rid of these?
I had no problems with my ipod touch 4th, which I had for years.   Any help would be great.

  • Disabling genius and "ghost songs"

Okay, so this strange series of problems begun last night when I tried to add a new CD to my iTunes library (on windows) and subsequently to my ipod 4th gen. I should also note that this is the first time I have transferred data to my iPod since activating genius on my iTunes software. What happened is I clicked and dragged the new album into the "my ipod" playlist (I manually manage music). Looking at the status bar in iTunes i saw that it was transferring many songs not on the album, which i hadn't even interacted with recently. Upon looking back in my ipod I saw what I can only describe as "ghost songs" songs that i had previously deleted from my iPod, that had reappeared, but were unplayable, greyed out, and had no album art. Many of the "living" albums on my ipod had spontaneously lost album art as well. I am unable to delete the ghost songs as swiping sideways provides no delete option. In an attempt to fix the album art issues, i tried deleting music from my iPod and readding it from iTunes. However, iTunes is refusing to transfer the data, i have been able to fix this by deleting the music from my iTunes library and re-adding it, but it still doesn't display artwork. Also the genius icon has been added in between the shuffle and loop buttons in the player view and it has also deleted all of my previously existing playlists.
Please, all i want to do is get my playlists back if possible, disable genius, and remove the ghost songs. Getting album art back would also be nice.

This is still not fixed in iTunes 9.01

  • Songs are not loading onto my iphone from itunes (gray "ghost songs"

    Hi there,
I'm set up to manually manage my music in Itunes (Mac) with my Iphone 4s. Yesterday I switched to automatic syncing, a bunch of extremely random things happened, and all my music disappeared on my phone. I switched back to manually managing music, and now songs that I drag from my itunes library only show up as those dreaded gray "ghost songs" once they're dragged in. The same goes for if I "autofill" from a specific folder, and when I go back to "automoatic syncing".
However this is strangely limited to songs purchased on Itunes. Songs that have been ripped from CDs have no problem loading, and show up black and playable in itunes.
I have restored to an earlier backup, but this didn't resolve the problem.
I'm about to put both my laptop and my phone through a window.
    Somebody? Anybody?

    Carab81,
You have Sync Entire music library option selected?  Double check your enabled settings from under your iPod's Summary tab as well to make sure they are not interfering with this configuration.

  • Duplicate, greyed out, "ghost" songs on iPad

My ipad keeps showing up these weird ghost songs (see attached image). I dont see them on the ipad itself, just in itunes on my mac. I can delete them but later they come back and it makes organising my music difficult. Why are they are there? How can I get rid of them? Its driving me crazy. I have my music set to manually manage. I do not have itunes match (though I used to have it.) What is the little dotted grey circle indicating?
I have the latest ios 6.0.1 and itunes 11.0.1
Any help appreciated. I have seen a few similar threads though nothing quite like this one.
    Thanks,
    Andy
edit - I deleted all the music off my ipad. Usage now shows that I have no music on there but itunes still shows the ghosts.

I had this problem just now when I was trying to copy a playlist I created via my iTunes on my Mac to my iPhone and managed to get rid of it.
I solved it by removing all the 'greyed-out songs' (literally just right-clicking them and deleting) from my iPhone 'On this iPhone' area. Then I disconected my iPhone from my laptop and reconnected it. I let it run all its usual sync functions (I don't have auto-sync selected in the settings for my iTunes - i couldn't fit my library on my phone and didn't want my iPhone library to be constantly re-synced). It says 'Waiting for sync to start'. Then, 'Syncing items 1 of 4' ...)
Then I just dragged the playlist mix over to my iPhone and they all loaded - no grey/grey circle anymore. Hope this helps!!

  • Downloading Ghost Songs Off of iPhone 5S

I'm a relatively new iphone 5s user, and I noticed that it completed some albums that I did not complete when I had the chance, there are now ghost songs on my iphone 5S that are not on my itunes and I'd like to get those off of my iphone and made permanent on my itunes. I've already checked and the track I want is not on itunes anymore. Advice?

I tried downloading it from the cloud onto my iPhone, then making a playlist on my iPhone, but the PlayList won't sync over to iTunes. What am I doing wrong?

  • How can I get rid of ghost songs in library?

I have deleted several songs/lectures from my computer, but they still show up as "ghosts" with a weird circular symbol to their left (see image attached) -- Itunes think they still exist, but they are no longer on my computer .  itunes won't allow me to click and delete them.  How can I get rid of them?

I tried to delete them like I would any song (select and hit the delete key) but they won't disappear.  I also searched for the file on my computer and it does not exist.  I don't know how to get rid of it.  The "stream" songs are all mixed in with my regular songs.

  • IPhone 4 - Ghost songs (brrrrr)

    Hello,
I'm having a real strange problem...
When I copy/sync my playlists (from iTunes 9.2) to my "cool-brand-new-iphone-4", the songs are copied correctly (I can find them by searching them) but playlists are empty or almost (I can find 10 songs instead of 100 in my playlist "TOP 100" for exemple)
Another exemple, in my playlist "Add Recently", I have almost 50 songs in iTunes, and after sync, inside my iPhone 4, I can just see one album (not the last one). But, as I said, the songs are sync (I can find them by searching on iPhone) but not in the playlists.
This problem occurs in all my playlists.
Do you have an idea ? I have no problems with my iPhone 3G or my iPods
    Thanks a lot !
    Cédric.

I have check you links, but It doesn't help me...
I'll try to explain better with a real example:
    - On iTunes, my playlist "TOP 100" is full with, well... 100 songs.
    - I synchronise It (manually or automatically both tested) on my iPhone 4
    - I go to to my "iPod app" in my iPhone 4. Playlist "TOP 100" is write
    - When I go inside this playlist "TOP 100", I found only 10 or 15 songs (mostly same artist) and nothing more.
    - If I made a manuel search (with spotlight) I can found manually the 100 songs.
    - So, songs are correctly copied, but not appear correctly in playlists.
    - It work fine with my iPhone 3G, iPod Touch and Nano.
I try the help on iTunes, Apple.com, ask to Apple, search on forum, websites... nothing
    Thanks you !

  • Having problems with Ghost Songs

Basically I downloaded iOS 8, then when i went to put my songs back onto my phone, iTunes would say that theyre on my phone, but it will gray the song out and put an empty circle next to it.  I already tried restoring my phone, restaring everything, and deleting the songs and putting them back on.

Ok, thanks for the distinction.  I do subscribe to iTunes Match. Just one thing I'm still wondering about... How do I remove the faded songs with the dotted circles by them from my iPod. They are completely invisible on my iPod, but I can see them here through iTunes, and they take up Other space.

  • Ghost songs on iphone

    Hello
I have an Iphone 5. Latest software is installed.
I connect the phone to itunes and the tab On tihs phone displays a nuber of "greyed" out songs.
I have deleted all music  via settings on the phone and restarted the phone.
I have un ticked the selected file in music, synced the phone and then re did everything.
ALl music has been downloaded from Itunes.
How can I clear these grey out songs?

Mastodon is amazing just to start off
    Alright
Connect iPhone to computer- click on iPhone under devices. click on the music tab above the picture of iPhone in the middle of the screen.
Uncheck Sync music - Remove- click apple
Recheck sync music -All songs or how ever you have is setup - apply - and check out the device.

  • Ghost song

Sometimes when I'm listening to my iPod, a random song plays. I can't really understand the words, and it's only about 30 seconds long. I don't know what it's called, and I went through my iTunes library- it's not there. Also, I usually hit the forward button to skip it, and I can't skip back to it. It- disappears. Anyone know what to do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Try deleting all music:
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • I plugged my ipod 5th gen into my pc and it added 15 songs (7 different ones) but they are not downloaded, installed and you can not delete them

Any solutions on how to delete the "ghost songs" ?
P.S I deleted all the songs from itunes and restored from backup but that did nothing

Mine had been fading for a while before the warranty was up, and then became mostly unchargeable in the eleventh month.
I took it to a Genius bar where they were able to test it and swap it for a new iPod touch.
Just make sure you have done a very careful backup before you go, I have had weird sync problems after the swap, getting my stuff back.
I suggest the simplest method is to clear off just about everything you can, especially the photos. Less to chase when things go pear shaped.

  • ITunes 11.2.1 doesn't let me sync new songs purchased on iTunes to my iPhone 5S and iPad mini Retina

I hope someone can help me. I've purchased 5 new albums on iTunes 11.2.1. I've created playlists and cannot sync them with my iPhoen 5S and iPad mini Retina under iOS 7 (latest version). I check the playlist and sync, but on the iPhone or iPad, the playlist shows the songs being on the cloud. I try to download them and it won't let me me. I have deactivated iTunes Match on my MBP.....  I've spent money on new albums that I can't listed to on mu iPhone or iPad. How frustrating!!!

The same thing is happening to me now and it's just been since the  update before last, it seems. And the strange thing is that it's only doing it to songs that are demo-versions (I'm a musician) that have no metadata or ISRC codes or anything. Songs in this format have been transferred in the past without any problems, but that's changed; they show up as ghost songs on my iPad mini (which is fully updated) and any playlist that has one of those ghost songs in it will not play, even if the rest of the songs are fine.
I think Apple needs to address this fast because I'm sure I'm not the only one receiving non-commercial Mp3s or .wav files and needs to use them in various forms on our devices!

  • Stuck with a partially downloaded song

On my 3rd generation iPad, I am stuck with a song I partially downloaded.
In iTunes>Purchases, I clicked on the cloud next to the song title. It started to download on my iPad. Somehow, I thought the better of it, I didn't need the song on my iPad, so I broke it off. However, now it's there, on my iPad, as some sort of out-of-reach ghost song.
When I go back to iTunes>Purchases, there's no cloud next to the song, but Play. When I choose Play, I'm redirected to Music but the screen goes dark. Nothing happens. I can't swipe to delete the song either. There's a button that seems to indicate it's partially downloaded (next to "Rolling Stones Si..."), but when I click on it, it disappears:
I've tried General>Usage>Music, but it says "No data".

Oh thank goodness! I re-downloaded the songs, like what you said, on my computer, and I synced my music over, go to albums on my iPad and deleted the whole album. Finally the songs are deleted! Thanks for helping me!

  • Deleting Songs from Nano 7 - Problems!

What should be a simple matter is made so complex by Apple that it is pure torture.
Why is it so complicated to delete songs from Nano 7?
I've tried the "uncheck the boxes" and re-sync nonsense.  Yes, it got rid of some songs -- but it ADDED songs I NEVER checked!
And after multiple re-syncs, without those songs checked, these ghost songs keep appearing.
Frustrating with a capital F -- and a reason this is my last Apple product.  Ever.

Are you loading songs using automatic syncing?  It sounds like it, but I'm not sure.  Using the checkboxes next to songs is not the appropriate way to remove songs.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of buttons going across, near the top, starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This is iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music, if it's not already checked.  Since you want to select what does and does not go on the iPod, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, select the playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres you want on the iPod.
If you want to make this simple, you can try this approach for setting this up.  Create a new playlist in your iTunes library.  You can call it "iPod Songs" (or whatever you want).  To this playlist, add ALL of the songs you want on the iPod.
Back on the iPod's Music screen, select "iPod Songs" under Playlists; you can select other things if desired.  When you click Apply, all of the songs in your selection, including the "iPod Songs" playlist, sync to the iPod.  Going forward, when you want to remove songs from the iPod or add songs to the iPod, just update that playlist in iTunes.  The next time you connect the iPod (or click the Sync button), the same changes are automatically synced to the iPod.
That should solve your problem with deleting songs.  Just maintain the playlist in iTunes, and iTunes maintains the iPod automatically.  You can, of course, maintain more than one playlist in iTunes, and sync them all to the iPod (up to the capacity limit of the iPod).  Be sure to checkmark all of those songs you unchecked in your iTunes music library.
Note that there are other buttons next to Summary and Music.  Those are for setting up automatic syncing for those other types of iTunes content.
If you are using the manual method (dragging songs to the iPod in iTunes to load), and not automatic syncing, please post back.
