Ghost TV Monitor detected

Hi
My 17' Alu show a TV monitor in the Display Panel. I've never connected a TV on this port. All sessions are affected. I am afraid that it is a hardware problem. Any idea?
Vincent

Does this have anything to do with the codec being Apple ProRes?
The frame rate must work with NTSC - that is, it must be 29.97

edit: any particular reason for using the HQ variant?

  • 10.5.7 update massively broke monitor detection, remains broken in 10.6.3

I have two 17" TFT monitors (Samsung and Hyandi); one at the office, one at home. Both of them worked perfectly with my 13" Macbook using OS X from 10.5.3 through 10.5.6. As soon as the 10.5.7 upgrade was installed, both stopped working. The Hyundai can still be used with the VGA connection, which does not work with the Samsung; neither work with DVI. I have also had problems with monitor detection when giving presentations and connecting the monitor to external projectors (VGA).
I dual boot with Linux on the same machine; both monitors continue to work flawlessly there. I reinstalled OS X 10.5.3 to a Firewire disk and both return to a working state there. Immediately after installing the 10.5.8 combo update, both cease to work, and today, after upgrading (the Firewire-disk install) to 10.6.3, the problems persist.
I have seen suggestions to try SwitchResX in various similar reports, but have had no luck there since after plugging in the monitor it's never even recognized.
Upon plugging in the monitors, the main display begins to blink while it apparently tries to detect the resolution of the secondary monitor. This continues indefinitely leaving the computer useless until I disconnect the secondary monitor.
It frustrates me to no end that there is still not a fix for this problem. I assume it is not exceedingly rare since it happens with two different monitors, and it is clearly an OS problem since it works perfectly with older versions of OS X and Linux.
Has anyone found their way to the other end of this mess? At the moment it seems downgrading to 10.5.6 is the only real option, which is very frustrating since that means completely reinstalling the OS.

    Hey nerowolfe,
Thanks for the info, I will try the combo update and see if it resolves my issue. I have tried rebooting all three of my machines and there is no problem with my router. As I mentioned earlier, everything worked fine with all of these machines until I ran this new update.
Yeah, I love my G5 (Last 2.0 dual core model made prior to intel models). I have a 320 GB WD Velociraptor 10K Rpm drive for my main drive and a 1TB WD as a secondary. Also, I have 10GB of Ram and upgraded the video card to a 256Mb AGP.
I have been using MACs for 4-5 years now and I just love my G5 PPC. My rendering times with Kinemac 3D and iMovie are pretty darn quick. Here is an example of an animation clip I did on my G5 for a company called SnapShotz Photobooth Rentals in Los Angeles. (SnapShotz is a photo booth rental company that services weddings, quinceanaras, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate events, etc.) The clip was made almost entirely with Kinemac and then re-edited with iMovie.
The video clip can be viewed from:

  • Second monitor detection and resolution issue with iMac

    Hi All,
long time reader here, got a lot of helpful tips, thanks to all who post!!
I have a 24" iMac, Intel based, with OSX 10.5.8.
I bought a Viewsonic 22" monitor to use along side my iMac when using CS4 and I do a lot of photography. Now the problem is that sometimes my iMac recognizes it as VA2213w and other times it see it as VGA monitor. When is sees it as the VGA monitor the resolution changes a bit, even though it has it on its highest setting 1920x1080 @60hz. My tool pallets on the screen are a bit fuzzy, readable but not the best. I'm using a mini dvi to VGA adaptor as the Viewsonic only has a VGA plug. Could this be the issue? As I have read a lot of the problems here and they seem to be all pointing to the adaptor. If so then why does my iMac sometimes see it as VA2213w monitor and then on other times as VGA. I'm doing nothing to the display other than switching on in the morning.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency! Its driving me mad. I can't seem to get it back to recognize the display as VA2213. I have clicked on detect displays etc etc.
It was working fine all week and then suddenly last night it went back to seeing it as a VGA monitor only. Any help would be appreciated. I have no cursor issues, just the resolution and monitor detection.
    Regards
    Fergul

    Hi All,
Well the issue seems to be the cable. I had an older TFT monitor that I was using and when I bought the above viewsonic, I just simply connected it to the existing cable. It wasn't till I was about to send the monitor back for one that had a DVI connection that I decided to use the VGA cable that came with the new monitor. What can I say, there hasn't been an issue since my last post which was a few weeks ago. Even when the iMac goes to sleep and awaken, no probs. Thanks to those that posted, its appreciated!
    So far so good.
    Take care.

  • Hierarchy monitoring detected that the ConfigMgr SQL Server ports 1433,4022, are not active on Firewall exception

    SMS_HIERARCHY_MANAGER reports (Message ID=3353):
"Hierarchy Monitoring detected that the ConfigMgr SQL Server <fqdn> ports 1433,4022, are not active on Firewall
    exception."
This is a fresh SCCM 2012 environment with no firewall active. SQL is installed on the same server as SCCM 2012.  Is there a way to fix this without enabling the firewall?

    Check this out
    Issue:
ConfigMgr logs the error even though Windows Firewall is disabled or it is enabled and all exceptions are added to SQL Server(s).
Environment: I had an environment  consist of a two node SQL Cluster hosting ConfigMgr database and a separate ConfigMgr primary site server
    Resolution:
Windows firewall service must be started on both SQL nodes and ConfigMgr itself . As soon as the service is started exceptions for TCP 1433 and 4022 must be added to SQL nodes firewall.
After that the firewall profiles can be disabled using:
netsh advf set allp state off
This is true but if you disable the firewall even thought you have opened the Firewall port then disabled the firewall. The status message will continue to be generated and your site server will still be in an error state.
Notice that I said "disabled" and not "turn off".

  • Windows 8.1 update only hdmi monitor detected 2 dvi monitors undetected

Updated Windows 8 to 8.1 and have 3 monitors on Geforce 660ti video card. Since update only hdmi monitor detects. Have updated all video card drivers and clean installed multiple times but still same problem. Can unplug hdmi monitor and get nothing. Plug
it in and that monitor works but nothing on dvi monitors.

    Hi,
Check whether the monitor is detected by the computer according to this method:
Go to control panel, then go to hardware and sound, click the display.
Then click Change display settings at the left panel, just like the picture shown as below, then click Detect.
There should be all the monitors listed, meanwhile I suggest to go to the official website of your computer motherboard producer and download and install the BIOS version accordingly.

  • External monitor detected but no picture

I recently tried hooking up my 17 inch LCD gateway monitor to my 13 inch mac. My mac detects it and lists it under display properties however it does not actually have a picture on the monitor. The gateway just stays black or powers on and then goes black after saying no signal. I have a mini dvi to dvi adapter and then a dvi to vga adapter hooked up, which is then plugged into the monitor. My monitor has a dvi hookup along with the vga input but i unfortunately realized this after I bought the adapter. I figure if my mac sees it I should be able to get it working without buying another expensive cable.
    Can anyone help?

I had the exact same problem with my 50" LG TV. I'll be looking forward to a reply.

  • External Monitor - detected but nothing showing

    Hello
I have recently bought a miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adaptor so I could set up an external monitor.
Whilst in Display settings the second monitor is being detected, I just have a black screen/no signal.
My MB Pro obviously thinks its there, as the mouse travels off the side of the screen to the extended desktop, its just that nothing is showing...
I have tried a lot of things like restarts, altering resolutions, tried another monitor, tried other cables - and nothing seems to let me have an external monitor running.
Is there something I am missing here?
    Thanks for any help

If two monitors have been tried and neither worked, that casts a lot of doubt on the adapter. Even though it is new, it could be defective. I recommend taking it back where it was purchased for an exchange.

  • Turning off monitor detection?

Is there a way to turn of monitor auto-detection. I am using a kvm and have the a monitor hooked up as primary desktop on external dvi connector. Using iMac display as secondary monitor. Every time I use kvm to switch to another monitor the resolution gets reset and the anything i have on the secondary (main iMac) screen gets shifted over because primary sceens is resized to a lower resolution. How can i turn off autodetection or lock in the main screen resolution?

    Hi calaban9
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Turn off Mirroring!
If you use Extended Desktop you can choose a resolution for each display, that should not change when the external is switched off.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
    Resolutions
+When you connect the adapter to the computer, the screen may refresh momentarily as the computer prepares itself for the new video output. When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution which may cause areas of the built-in display to be blacked out.+

  • HDMI monitor, detected as television, causing problems

I have an Acer H233H monitor that is connected to a 2010 mini via HDMI. In display preferences it is detected as a television. This is causing problems with some games. The games will only let me choose 50hz refresh rates, when the desktop is running at 60hz just fine. Is there a way to force my monitor to be detected as a monitor instead of a TV, so that I can choose from proper resolutions instead of 1080p?

The monitor sends a signal to identify itself to the device to which it is attached, the EDID. So it appears that your monitor is telling the Mac what it is. The Mac can only go by what it is told.
What does the user guide that came with the monitor say regarding the refresh rate. Can the monitor even use 50hz?

  • Ghost VGA Monitor

    Hi all,
I have a Mac book Pro 15"(latest non Multi touch version)to whom I sometimes attach the S-Video adapter to see some films or Slide shows on my TV.
Since a couple of days Leopard sees a VGA monitor attached to the MBP even though nothing is physically attached.
This is quite annoying as leopard wants to use it to either extend the desktop (giving me a part of my physical desktop I cannot see) or duplicate it (in which case I cannot use the standard LCD resolution, not recognized by the VGA settings) and unfortunately I could not find a way to deactivate it.
When I connect the S-Video cable he recognizes it, making the VGA monitor disappear, but as soon as I unplug it, the ghost comes back.
I already tried to hot plug or cold plug the S-Video as well as the VGA cable, with no result.
The situation is really annoying and I could not find a way to solve it, I hope that you can help me sort this out.
    Thank you in advance,
    Regards,
    Amdonati

I don't think there is a way to undo the firmware update, until the installer from the developer has an uninstall option, or there was an uninstall program included with the install program. You can download it again and see.
However, now that you have it working partially (it's acting like you have another display attached), try resetting the PRAM again. You did that as a byproduct of resetting the PMU, but things were not working +almost correctly+ at that time. This is the reset PRAM procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
That might help, because some display settings are stored in PRAM, so the one that indicates a second display could be corrupted.
Also, when I changed display settings on my Mac (such as resolution or arrangement), these are the files I saw getting updated.
    <home folder>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver...plist
    <home folder>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays...plist
    <volume root>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
(There is a random-looking alphanumeric string where I put the dots - probably different for each system.)
So you might try dragging those preference files to the Desktop to let the system create new ones. Then restart. Note: The above files are for Leopard; could be different if you are using Tiger.

  • Flaky External Monitor Detection

Anyone run into the problem where plugging in an External Display detects the display "most" of the time but not always. Often I'll plug in my external monitor and OS X fails to detect it. A reboot is often required and then it works. I'm assuming this is an outstanding bug with display detection in OS X.
    Other info:
Usually book is closed when monitor is plugged in, then use wand or bluetooth periperals to wake Mac up.
I'm using the S-Video to analog adapter to connect to this monitor.

I'm having a simillar problem and it also happens just sometimes — most of the time there's no problem at all connecting to the external display, a LaCie photon20vision II.
The MacBook Pro is asleep when I connect the DVI cable for the external display. I also connect an ethernet cable, the power cable and an Apple USB keyboard with a Microsoft USB IntelliMouse. After that I press a key on the keyboard och click the mouse to wake it up. As I said this works fine most of the time. and I do this every week day, but today—and I remember it happened before—there was no signal for the external display. The light on the front of the MacBook Pro was static, so it wasn't asleep at least. Ater a while I opened the lid to see if there was anything on the "built-in" display, but no. I disconnected everything, tried to cles the lid to make the computer sleep again, which it didn't seem to wan. Tried to press buttons on the keyboard etc. but still nothing, even on the internal display.
    Had to force restart.

  • HDMI monitor detected erroneously as TV

Is there a text file that I can edit someplace that will override the detected output source?
OSX detects that my LG hdmi monitor is a tv however that is not correct.
    Monitor
    LG L246wp
I'd really rather not replace this very nice screen but it is definitely looking that way.
    Any insight would be helpful.

The name on the window in
    System Preferences > Displays ...
... comes directly from the display, across the digital data channel, a bi-directional communication link used for the display to tell its name and its capabilities, and the computer to specify calibration information (if supported).
It is not in a text file. It is in the Display, IF the display will provide it. If the display does not provide that info, there is nothing that can be done from the Mac except manually setting the resolution.

  • Force monitor detection or stop my t61p going into retard mode everytime I undock.

I run XP with a t61p with quadro fx570m and an advanced mini doc, connected to a dell 2405fpw via dvi. Every now and again after I undock, I can no longer enable the secondary screen.
In Display properties, the screen shows but is greyed out. If I attempt to enable it  by clicking on it and ticking 'extend my windows desktop onto this monitor' and clicking apply, the screen flickers and nothing happens.
The nvidia control panel reports only a single display. Attempting rigorous display detection achieves nothing.
The only solution I have found is to reboot my computer.
This is incredibly annoying. Is there a way to fix this?

Unfortunately hitting undock and/or fn+f7 didn't do that much (the latter would sometimes swap the primary display between the monitor or the lcd, but still not enable the secondary). However, I just wanted to add that sometimes (but not always), closing the laptop lid for a few seconds and reopening would allow me to enable my secondary screen (either that or the various prayers, dances and sacrifices to the gods are finally paying dividends)

  • Ghosting on monitor

I'm getting a weird ghosting effect along the bottom third of my LG monitor. There is also a thin white vertical line that goes about a third of the way up the screen. If I use the cursor to select this region of the screen I can see a clealy defined quavering demarcation line that runs along the entire bottom third of the screen and there is a ghosted image of the cursor and any icons within this area. The rest of the screen is free from this effect.
    Video card is stock HD2600.
The strange part is that when I boot from an external drive which has a cloned system prior to installing the Leopard Graphic Update 1.0, there are none of these issues.
I had really hesitated before installing the Leopard Graphic Update, but decided to go for it in order to install the Firmware updates.
Is there any danger in simply cloning back the pre-Graphic Update system from the external drive now that I have done all the firmware updates?

For those interested, here are some pics of the problem. The first two show the ghosting issue while booted from the stock 320gig Seagate drive, system 10.5.3 with Leopard Graphic Update 1.0. The second two are while booted from an external FW drive.
Below are pics while booted from external FW drive without Leopard Graphic Update 1.0:

  • My MacBook Air (OS 10.8.4) does not connect to projectors consistently using a VGA/Thunderbolt connetor. The Monitors/detect displays box that I am used to never appears. Intermittently the "arrangement" window appears in the Displays System Preferences

My previous MacBook Air running an older operating system synced up just fine with these same projectors using the same minidisplay to vga adapter. My new computer has Airplay on it, and Airplay shows up on my menu bar on the new laptop where the displays icon used to appear. I cannot get the displays icon to display (even when I turn Airplay mirroring off). It used to show up on the menu bar and if I had projector issues I hit "detect displays" and it resolved. None of that appears to be available with the new operating system and Airplay on. I am not sure why.
