Ghosting on monitor

I'm getting a weird ghosting effect along the bottom third of my LG monitor. There is also a thin white vertical line that goes about a third of the way up the screen. If I use the cursor to select this region of the screen I can see a clealy defined quavering demarcation line that runs along the entire bottom third of the screen and there is a ghosted image of the cursor and any icons within this area. The rest of the screen is free from this effect.
Video card is stock HD2600.
The strange part is that when I boot from an external drive which has a cloned system prior to installing the Leopard Graphic Update 1.0, there are none of these issues.
I had really hesitated before installing the Leopard Graphic Update, but decided to go for it in order to install the Firmware updates.
Is there any danger in simply cloning back the pre-Graphic Update system from the external drive now that I have done all the firmware updates?

For those interested, here are some pics of the problem. The first two show the ghosting issue while booted from the stock 320gig Seagate drive, system 10.5.3 with Leopard Graphic Update 1.0. The second two are while booted from an external FW drive.
Below are pics while booted from external FW drive without Leopard Graphic Update 1.0:

  • Ghost VGA Monitor

    Hi all,
I have a Mac book Pro 15"(latest non Multi touch version)to whom I sometimes attach the S-Video adapter to see some films or Slide shows on my TV.
Since a couple of days Leopard sees a VGA monitor attached to the MBP even though nothing is physically attached.
This is quite annoying as leopard wants to use it to either extend the desktop (giving me a part of my physical desktop I cannot see) or duplicate it (in which case I cannot use the standard LCD resolution, not recognized by the VGA settings) and unfortunately I could not find a way to deactivate it.
When I connect the S-Video cable he recognizes it, making the VGA monitor disappear, but as soon as I unplug it, the ghost comes back.
I already tried to hot plug or cold plug the S-Video as well as the VGA cable, with no result.
The situation is really annoying and I could not find a way to solve it, I hope that you can help me sort this out.
    Thank you in advance,
    Regards,
    Amdonati

I don't think there is a way to undo the firmware update, until the installer from the developer has an uninstall option, or there was an uninstall program included with the install program. You can download it again and see.
However, now that you have it working partially (it's acting like you have another display attached), try resetting the PRAM again. You did that as a byproduct of resetting the PMU, but things were not working +almost correctly+ at that time. This is the reset PRAM procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
That might help, because some display settings are stored in PRAM, so the one that indicates a second display could be corrupted.
Also, when I changed display settings on my Mac (such as resolution or arrangement), these are the files I saw getting updated.
    <home folder>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver...plist
    <home folder>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays...plist
    <volume root>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
(There is a random-looking alphanumeric string where I put the dots - probably different for each system.)
So you might try dragging those preference files to the Desktop to let the system create new ones. Then restart. Note: The above files are for Leopard; could be different if you are using Tiger.

  • Ghost TV Monitor detected

    Hi
My 17' Alu show a TV monitor in the Display Panel. I've never connected a TV on this port. All sessions are affected. I am afraid that it is a hardware problem. Any idea?
    Vincent

Does this have anything to do with the codec being Apple ProRes?
The frame rate must work with NTSC - that is, it must be 29.97

edit: any particular reason for using the HQ variant?

  • G4 iMac thinks an external VGA monitor is attached.

My first Mac is the 17 inch G4 iMac. I'm fairly sentimental about this machine.
The iMac running 10.4.11 thinks that there is an external VGA monitor attached to it. The iMac also assigns this "ghost VGA monitor" as the main screen. Every few minutes the screen will flicker from blue, to black and to white before resetting itself. This flickering will continue at random intervals thereafter. Under the Display settings there is no option to turn off mirroring or to arrange the screens.
Years ago I used to use one of those honking CRT Studio Displays. That thing died a long time ago though. Is there some old preferences file that could be screwing with my iMac?
I have also attempted to zap the NVRAM + PRAM. It did not solve the issue.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • External monitor ghosting: Samsung TA350 & MacBook Pro 2011

I'm happy with the picture quality, but moving anything around on screen creates a horrible ghosting effect. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos or scrolling text.
    Can somebody suggest a solution?
    My set-up:
    Mac OS Lion
    MacBook Pro 13 inch, mid-2011
Samsung SyncMaster TA350, 24-inch external monitor
    My connection:
    Amazon Basics HDMI/DVI cable
Apple DVI to Mini Displayport adapter
    Thanks a lot!

I bought a SendStation HDMI to Mini Displayport cable a couple of hours ago. It didn't improve anything.
It seems like a software/configuration problem.

  • Ghosting:  DVI+VGA monitor / G3 minitower / Radeon Mac 32MB RAM / OS 9

    Good evening.
I have been running a HP LCD monitor vs VGA for years with good results, until the monitor died.
I got a replacement HP 17" monitor with VGA+DVI inputs.
It works just fine with the VGA, but receives no signal when hooked up to the DVI inputs.
The VGA also shows a ghosting which is not attractive. I have tried every resolution possibility in the "monitors" control panel with no improvement.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your time.

Radeon Mac 32M DVI may require a software update from ATI for proper support.
Ghosting on VGA is caused by "echoes" on the cable, and may be the result of:
    • cheap cables or
    • broken wires in the cable or
    • badly shielded cables wrapped in a loop, rather than randomly arranged

  • Stock 9600 Radeon G5 card causing ghosting on large monitor

I recently added a 1920 x 1080p 37" monitor from Westinghouse. It worked well until I unchecked the overscan option in the the OSX Display preferences. After checking it again it did not return to the crisp images I had before, but now has major ghosting. It is a new monitor but I tried hooking it to another apple with the same operating system and it worked fine. I reset the PRAM and shut everything down for awhile but no luck. It seems to have something to do with resolution preferences. The Display preference panel only shows a non-interlaced option. I noticed that the other machine (laptop) showed the same resolution but without the word "non-interlaced." Tech support at Westinghouse were surprised that the graphics card was using the monitor in a non-interlaced mode when progressive is preferred. It would appear that although my preferences didn't change regarding mode and resolution "192 x 1080 non-interlaced," it seems to have been operating in regular or progressive mode until I tried to uncheck the overscan option. At which time it actually switched to the "non-interlaced" mode. Please advise.
    jmf

It is a DVI connection. The ghosting I'm seeing is like there is white light surrounding each text character. I don't have other user accounts but I can create one and try it. I will also try booting from the test disk and report back. It is odd that the G4 laptop, I tried it on, did have any thing about interlaced following the 1920 x 1080 resolution option. One thing that I did notice is that there doesn't seem to be any 'ghosting' around the apple icon (in the middle of the screen) or the small lines making a circular shape (indicating progress) on the screen during the initial stages of starting up.

  • 30" HD Apple Monitor leaving ghost images and vertical lines

I have a Mac Pro Gen 1 with ati 5770 HD video card runing Snow Leopard. My 30" HD Apple Monitor will flicker and leave verticle lines and perstent ghost images from closed windows, even during shut down.  Some times it will flicker back to normal, but then it will flicker back to leaving verticle lines and ghost images.  I have tried using a different video card, same issue, nothing changes.  I have tried instaling new video drivers and using old ones. I have been using the ati 5770 HD for months now without any issues.  How do I fix this?

If two different cards produce the same results then I would think its your 30" display which is failing.
    Update:
I just noticed in your sig you are using 10.6.8.  There are some threads about video problems (flickering, not sure about vertical lines) with 10.6.8 (google "10.6.8 flickering site:discussions.apple.com").  So if you boot from your installer dvd which presumably has an older version of OSX (10.6.4 maybe?) do you still see the display problems?
Another thought - would an smc and pram reset affect anything?  You might give it a try too.

  • Xorg & Dual Monitors: How to disable the ghost mouse?

As other dual screen users may have noticed, after upgrade to Xorg when you move your mouse between the two workspaces the mouse duplicates, aka it leaves a ghost mouse pointer behind the workspace you just moved the mouse pointer from. Does anyone have an idea how to disable this annoying thing? As a sidenote, this shouldn't be related to Xinerama as I'm using two separate X servers.

I have also found this really annoying. I haven't been able to find anything about it.
Here is a little script to make a single ghost cursor invisible (not really a solution, but if you don't need the mouse on monitor 2 then you only need to run it when you accidentally move the mouse there), if it doesn't work move the mouse a little bit and run it again:
    unclutter -idle 0 & pid=$! ; xwarppointer screen +; sleep 0.5; xwarppointer screen +; kill $pid

  • Red ghosting with new 2311x monitor?

I just connected my new LV2311 monitor today and notice that when I scroll text in a browser, or just move a window with black text in it or just move the mouse pointer, there is a red 'trail' behind the object until it stops moving.  I have another Dell monitor that this does not happen with.  So I am wondering if this is a defect and should I request a replacement for this issue?
    Thanks!
    Bryan

I think I found a solution!  Check this web page:
    http://www.pretentiousname.com/dell2407fix/
Bascially, he's saying that the preset color profiles (Warm, Cool, Daylight, etc) are too bright or send too much signal to the pixels, causing the ghosting effect with high-contrast images when they move.  I have set up a Custom color profile and reduced the amount of red, green and blue values and also color-matched with another monitor I'm using.  It looks much better now.

  • Strange ghost monitor with AGP cards....

Before I get into it let me just say it's not a faulty computer part or an incorrect installation, or even what system I'm using.
I noticed when I got my GeForce 2 in 2001 that after installing it it was detecting two monitors. This was right around the time I upgraded to Detonator drivers. Suddenly the computer thought I had two monitors. One with the correct label and the other just "Default Monitor". No matter what I did (removing it etc.) it still came back every time I restarted windows. I tried removing all my PCI cards, switching orders, re-installing and eventually got a different card, a GF4. Guess what... same weird double monitor thing.
The strange thing is that it doesn't effect any programs. Meaning I don't have any errors, conflicts, or freezing. Just this ghost monitor. So now your going to say... oh it's your monitor. Nope! I just bought a new computer system last week which is completely newer and different from my old and after installing everything *including the new Nvidia drivers) the ghost monitor is back. With a different system and monitor.
So now I'm beginning to think it's suppsoed to be there as part of the drivers. Maybe Nvidia set that up for a reason? I going to by a GF4 Ti 4200 this week and I was curious if the ghost monitor is going to still be there.
Anyone else notice this? It's especially strange since I switched systems and cards and it's still there.
    Thanks
    Dave
    Old system:
    900 mhz AMD
    Geforce2 -> then GF4
    128 ram
    crap compaq board
    Win Me
    Detonator Drivers
    Bad Compaq CRT Monitor
    New System:
    AMD 2400+
    256 Ram DDR
    ECS 233 FSB DDR board
    GF4-> buying GF4 TI 4200
    Win Me
    Detonator Drivers
    Generic CRT 17" Orion Monitor

Yeah it set's up drivers for two monitor regardless if I only have one. Must be dual heads then like you said. Doesn't actually effect anything. Though it's strange that I only have one VGA port and not two or VGA/DVI.
I guess that it answers it though.
    Thanks!

    Yes, it works.

  • Ghosting with External CRT Monitor. Any Solution Yet?

a number of months ago i saw a LONG thread that, as far as i read, never really solved this issue. I was wondering if a solution was ever found.
    thanks, seth

more tests reveal a very perplexing conclusion:
    my PB works with:
    1. NEC (model #: ??? - looks very similar to LaCie electron blue), with built-in vga cable and apple adapter
    2. NEC Accusync 120, with removable vga cable (using both this NEC's supplied vga cable AND my LaCie's supplied vga cable) and apple adapter.
LaCie Monitor works with 2 different PC laptops connecting via vga cable. No adapter needed.
I have observed that the problem is
    1. not with my computer, since it works with 2 other monitors.
    2. not with the LaCie Monitor nor the LaCie-supplied vga cable since it works with 2 different PC laptops
    3. not with the vga cable/apple adapter combination because it works with PB attached to NEC Accusync 120
Which leads to the conclusion that this Macintosh PowerBook 15" Aluminum DOES NOT WORK with this LaCie Electron Blue 19
    Can someone explain?

  • [Solved] XFCE 4.8 Ghost panel on Second Monitor

I've found that when maximizing a window on my second monitor, there is a 28 pixel "gap" where my panel would be on that screen [If I used a panel on that one] upon maximizing a window. If I set my panel to autohide, this goes away, but I find auto-hiding panels rather annoying, and am wondering if there's any way to fix/workaround this. If it helps, I'm using the command "xrandr --output LVDS1 --right-of HDMI1" to extend my desktop onto the second monitor.
    Here's a screenshot of what happens http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3470 … 103502.png
Edit: Latest version of xfce4-panel fixes the issue.

Yeah, seems to be a limitation of the Nvidia GUI, but it seems that it's possible [and necessary] to configure it with Xorg's configuration files if you want more freedom to position your monitors.
Since some extra configuration is needed with the Nvidia driver, xrandr alone might not be ideal in your situation. [I mentioned it before since I never needed to mess with my Xorg configuration, and an .xprofile script based around xrandr works better with my Intel-based laptop. ]
Xorg's config files seem like a better choice for you, and if you need to change monitor layouts on the fly, xrandr should still work once you have a good Xorg configuration. If you choose to go this route, you'll probably find this section of the Xorg wiki page very useful: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Nvidia_2
Since you'd need to specify a position for your second monitor to workaround this, you'd need to use a line like this, instead of the "RightOf" one in the example configuration: ' Screen       1 "Screen1" x y ' where x,y is the location of the upper left corner of that display.
[If a configuration file already exists, make sure you create a backup of it first. Worst-case scenario, a bad config file will prevent X from starting, and you could just restore the backup from the command-line.]
I also discovered that offsetting it by the exact height of your panel seems to cause problems on your primary monitor [at least with the latest version of the XFCE panel]. Upon rebooting, windows would not respect my panels, and instead would go underneath them when maximized. Although, by offsetting my second monitor by a little more [1920x280 instead of 1920x284], both monitors allow windows to maximize correctly, so if you run into the same problem, something like that should fix it.

  • "ghost display" -- 2 monitors under Displays, even though only 1 connected

My computer persistently thinks that there are 2 displays connected: color LCD and VGA display. I only have, and ever had, one display: a 20" cinema display.
I've dumped com.apple.windowserv.* pref lists, restarted the computer and a couple of times, that did the trick.
    BUT, the problem has returned!
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks in advance,

The mid-2014 model of MacBook Pro with retina display supports using up to two external displays. See this specifications sheet -
