  • .GIF files, do they come from my iphoto?

I have over 1000 .gif files in my mac. If I erase them will it affect my photos in iphoto?
I don't know what they are or why I have so many of them. It is almost as if, whenever I download a photo, or anything having to do with an image for that matter, i am getting my computer cluttered up with these small images. Many of which i don't recognize. How did I get so many? Do they take up alot of space.
When I go into finder and type in .gif, it showed over 1000 of them.
Can I just delete them all without affecting my images in iphoto?
    Cheers,
    -An

    An:
Yes, you can delete the files if you don't need them.
Do any of these gifs look like application or system icons, folder icons, etc? What may have happened is you dragged your hard drive icon onto the iPhoto application icon in the Dock on into the open iPhoto window and imported all image files on the hard drive. Each application has many icons inside of it as well as the system.
Whether you have a managed library (i.e. your iPHoto's Advanced preferences will be as this screenshot ) or a referenced library (that checkbox is not checked and the file reside in the location where they were when added to the library) deleting them from the iPhoto Library by dragging them into iPhoto's Trash bin on the left and emptying that bin via the iPhoto->Trash menu there will be no affect on any other part of the computer.
*DO NOT DELETE THEM VIA A FINDER WINDOW! Delete them from within iPhoto as described above.*
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Viewing Animated GIF files in Preview

    Hello...
I'm trying to figure out why I cannot view animated GIF files within Preview. When I search within Preview's help I get this...
*1. Open the animated GIF file in Preview.*
*2. If the window's drawer isn't already visible, choose View > Drawer.*
*The drawer contains a thumbnail image for the animated GIF. The number of frames in the animation appears in the lower-right corner.*
*3. Click the triangle beside the thumbnail image.*
*Preview shows all the frames in the animated GIF. When you click a frame, the animation stops and Preview displays that frame.*
Now at the end of number 3 it states that "the animation stops", so according to that statment Preview should be "playing" the animation until I click a certain frame to stop it. Well mine doesn't do this, SO what's going on?
Oh, my OS is v10.4.10 and Preview is v3.0.9(409).
    Thanks!

Preview in Panther did play animated gifs, although it was a bit clunky at it. Evidently they intended to fix this in Tiger, but instead they ended up breaking it completely. To play an animated gif you now need to do so in a browser, such as Safari. Preview no longer plays them at all.

  • How to edit a Animated Gif file and convert to SWF

I am using the creative cloud with fireworks. I chose the free trial with buying in mind if I saw it work properly. I simply want to upload an animated GIF file and then download it as a SWF file. I saw someone on youtube do this and it's not that if I get on the correct page I would not know how to do that but I just cannot find how to get the GIF into the software to edit. It has just simply put them in the creative cloud folder which can open them on IE> How do i make it available to edit and convert to SWF please? Thanks in advance.

  • Animated .gif files

I have been using an older version of Photoshop Elements for a long time but just got a new MacPro and decided it's time to upgrade my PSE.  But maybe not....I downloaded the Photoshop Elements Trial version to check out if it's really worth upgrading or not and I think I'm in trouble. I have a ton of animated .gif files and they do not appear to open in the familiar "layers".  i read through some of these discussion threads and I think you're saying that if I use the current version of Photoshop Elements I will not be able to edit my old .gif files.  I did try making new layered files and save them for the web with animation and that seemed to work.  But if I'm going to lose the ability to edit my old .gif files I'm not sure I want to upgrade.
Can someone clarify this for me please.  Maybe it's just a matter of switching from Elements to CS4, but I thought from the descriptions of the programs as provided in the Products section that I fit more with the Elements program.....maybe not????
And this does not even consider that I haven't tried to load my older version on the new intel machine yet, it may not even run if I try that.
I do, for about 20% of my computing time use "that other" platform, but I don't like it, I much prefer my wonderful Mac machines.
    thanks for your help
    Leigh

Thank you for your offer, I do appreciae it.  But I think the better question to ask at this point is :  What is the last version of Photoshop Elements that supports editing animated gif files.  This is too important to me to lose this ability and after checking further I see CS4 is out of my price and needed features range. I would rather hang on to my old laptop to manipulate photos than lose the ability to edit my .gif files.
Can anybody help with this question?

  • Importing WITHOUT 'Copy Files to Iphoto Library Folder'

    Hi -
All right - I completely understand the significance of this command. Love that I can use iPhoto simply as a browser to run through all my pictures; however, if I choose not to Copy the Files on to iPhoto, how do I manually put the pictures somewhere else? Right now my iPhoto automatically pops open when I plug in my Canon. I looked in Preferences and didn't notice anything there.
Ultimate goal would be to manually get the pictures into my Documents folder and then import to Iphoto.
    Thanks!
    Grace

    Grace
    If you think
I can use iPhoto simply as a browser to run through all my pictures
    then you don’t
completely understand the significance of this command
iPhoto is not an image viewer. There are many image viewers for the Mac. Search on MacUpdate. The great thing about these is that they simply show you the contents of a folder of images.
That’s not iPhoto. It’s a database. Images still have to be imported to it, they will still be indexed and - more importantly - once imported you get a lot of disadvantages and few advantages of iPhoto.
If you want to move your pics from the Camera to your own folders: use Image Capture. It’s in your Applications Folder.
Some comments on running a Referenced Library:
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Unable to access gif files from the server

    hi all,
i have successfully signed an applet and it is loading in the client system also. in that applet, i instantiated a jbutton as given below:
    JButton jb = new JButton(new ImageIcon("http://192.168.91.154:8080/success/set.gif"));
but the icon din appear and a blank button appears, even when accessed from the server system.
if i give the exact path like c:/blazix/webfiles/success/ set.gif, the icon is coming in the server system but not in other systems. i tried without port no also but in vain. pl solve my problem. what i need is how to
specify the path of the file[any file] which is present in server.
or if i put all the gif files in the jar file, can i access the gif files present in the jar file [set for archive] ? if i can, give me the soln for accessing the gif file present in the jar file, so that i need not access the server to get the gif files.(i.e) how to specify the path of the gif files present in the jar file?
i ve one more doubt. the jni library file shld be in the server, and the client has to access the library in the server. i think the applet loaded in the client ll search for the library in the local m/c only . how to make the applet to search for library in the server??
i feel only by using rmi we can solve this problem. am i correct? if so i feel that an appln or applet running in the server shld access the jni library, and the applet in the client side should communicate with this server appln using rmi to get the data.is it correct? is there
    anyother way?
i appreciate your help in this regard. thanks in advance. bye, padmanbhan.

Better information on what you are doing with JNI might help you get an answer.
If you have some server process that needs to use JNI, then I would code a servlet to call, instead of using RMI to ge there.
Depending on your environment, and the target audiences environment, RMI may just cause you a lot of grief. Firewalls etc, get in the way of RMI connections and force security holes to be opened in order to work.
If you use a servlet, then traffic to your server process is done via standard http calls, which will already be enabled, because your app runs in a browser.
If ther data requirements are heavy duty, your server could always send an XML stream to the client, which would allow you to describe complex data to the client.
Running JNI stuff from the client directly means a lot of local infrastructure to run your app. The code you want to run, the JNI library ....
If what you have is really an application, but want the convenience of starting it from a browser, look at Java WebStart. Then you can distribute an application via the browser, and WebStart will worry about the deployment issues for you.
    In Summary:
Stay away from RMI from applets if you can help it.
If you really have an App, then try WebStart to manage the distribution issues for you.

  • Animated Gif files in Captivate

I have created an animated GIF file in Photoshop that i want to use in my captivate file.
The file wont preview in any of the preview modes other than the HTML5 output preview. All other previews just show the first frame of the GIF file.
If i chose to SWAP the animation with another GIF from the library the preview shows the animation playing.. see attached
Is there something im doing wrong here.
I guess i could upload my final file to the LMS with HTML5 output as this preview shows the animation but i also read there are limitations with this output as some transitions / effects dont work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Darren

    Hi Darren,
Yes, you can verify whether your GIF would fucntion correctly on HTML5 platform by Window--HTML5 Tracker Pod.
I am not an expert on Photoshop, but still would like to make a recommendation.
Set the 'delay' value for each of your Frame to 0.01 or some value if it shows as 0, this can be done using the animation frame Window. Save it as GIF again for Web Devices and import in Captivate, see, if you are abale to preview this time.
    Thanks,

Happy St. Valentine's Day to all you Irish folks!
I'm posting this even though there are threads in the forum that I have
used and contributed to in the past on this topic.
    The problem PERSISTS!
The problem/situation is that in mail from family/trusted friends, after I
open the mail, there is no "Load Images" warning at the top but an
animated .gif file is in the message! (don't get me wrong, i do sincerely
love dancing bears. i just want some warning.)
    Any suggerstions?
In mail preferences, viewing I have unchecked "display images and embedded
    objects in HTML messages".
In mail preferences, junkmail I have "enable junk mail filtering" and
"trust junk mail headers..." both checked.
All junk mail is flagged as junk. (in junkmail, advanced and in rules).
I keep the preview pane collapsed.
I pay attention to flags and don't open junk from strangers.

  • Animated .gif file correction and image ready help.

    Hi,
I have an animated gif created in an early verison of Image Ready & Photoshop. I need to make some changes. I have two problems.
A: Can't figure how to do it in the current version of Photoshop.
B: Open in the old image ready version, can't find the Layers pallet. I turn it on and off and it doesn't appear.
Trying to recreate a rotating .gif file any pointers or how to's?
    Thanks,
    John

You didn't say which version of ImageReady, but cs5 should open
most animated gifs from ImageReady and show the frames in the
Window>Animation panel. Some may not work right depending on
how old the version of ImageReady was that created them.
(you may have to resave the animation in ImageReady as a psd file)
In ImageReady try Window>Workspace>Reset Palette Locations and the layers
    palette should be visible.
In ImageReady, in the actions palette, are several actions to rotate (spin) images.

  • Editing an animated gif file

    Hi experts,
I have an animated gif file that works in my Dreamweaver website.  However, I edited the gif file in Photoshop, changing the image and canvas sizes.  When I save it (as a gif), only the top layer is retained, and it's no longer an animation.  How can I save the edited file and keep it as an animation that will work on my web page?
    Many thanks for hints
    Richard

What version of PS are you running? In CS4, 5 and 5.5 (not sure on the others) you simply just open the .gif. It should be in layers - one layer for each frame. You will then need to open the animation panel before making any modifications. If you don't, it will change each frame to the current.
You can't use save as. You need to use save as web or devices then make sure it's a gif and ensure the frames indicator says more than 1. You can then use the play/forward buttons to make sure it looks as you expect.

  • Can Premiere Elements be used on an animated gif file?

I am considering purchasing Premiere Elements but I need to know if one can use it to add effects to an animated gif file.
For example, in Photoshop Elements one can add certain effects to a gif image, such as giving it certain textures or filters.
Can one do the same kind of thing in Premiere Elements and if so can it be done to an animated gif file?
Maybe a better way to ask this question is:  can you import an animated gif file into Premiere Elements and then manipulate it?  Run filters, etc.
    Thanks for your help.

If you load your GIF into Premiere Elements 10, edit it, then share to an AVI file, you can then import the AVI file into GIF Movie Gear by Gamani, which will then create an animated GIF. I learned about this utility from a Microsoft tutorial on creating icons for Windows XP.
    http://www.gamani.com/product_icon.htm
If you use Firefox and get redirected, try using Internet Explorer instead.
After the trial period is over, it's $29.95US for 4 licences.
When you share to an AVI file, you will want to select the Microsoft AVI item from the list, then click the advanced button to open up the dialog where you will need to select a codec and enter the frame size and frame rate. The codec will have to be one that GIF Movie Gear likes, so there may be some trial and error needed to get a good codec. I shared to an AVI after picking Xvid for the codec, which GIF Movie Gear imported.
