.gif .png matte not working.

I'm creating a website for an author and the title on the top of the page is large white letters on transparency, to be on a black repeating background image. Rather than using html I created an image because she wants a specific font that isn't supported with html. I created the image, saved in .gif, and put it all in and then looked at the website and the edges were jagged; I realized I forgot the matte. I went back in and re-saved it with the matte and it worked perfectly. It looked great, the jagged edges were very noticeably gone.
Later, I had to make a small change to the image in regards to the font on just one of the letters (The capital H was a different font than the rest). The rest of the letters remained the same font. Me, being the unprofessional and mindless man I am, forgot to save the file as a photoshop file, so had to start over, but luckily it was an easy image to create. I did it exactly what I had did before, just changed the font on one letter. Saved it as .gif and put a black matte on it, and it didn't work. I tried again, and again, and again. I tried to save it normal, I tried to save it for web, I remade it, I tried using .png instead of .gif, I tried everything.
Most of the forums I found where people had the same problem said that you can't do mattes very well with .gif and this was to be expected. They said you should go in and add it in with pencil. But if that's the case, why was it working before? I did the exact same process, with the only difference being me changing the font on one letter, and it looks completely different. Before, the matte showed up in the preview and looked great on the site. Now it doesn't show up in the preview no matter what way I save it, and it doesn't work on the website.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm working with CS3.

A few things to try.
Try saving your export settings as a preset to use during the
batch
process.

Also, instead of using the generic FW export options, you can
choose
'Custom' from the drop down to set the settings. This was an
older file
but, it gets you to the right screen.

  • Save for Web Matte Not Working?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having problems with the Matte settings in the Save for Web section to create a smooth transparent .gif image. None of the black matte is showing up in the zoomed preview (picture attached), nor is it saving when I render the file. The adjusted transparent image still appears with the white jagged halos on a black web page background, even though I set a black matte. Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I haven't used the matte feature of Save for Web, so I can't help you there.  (I only save in PNG format.)
This is an interesting question, though, and I spent a few hours working on it -- I'm still assuming that you're starting with a logo supplied as a bitmap image (GIF or JPG) on a white background and want to clean it up so it works on a black background.
    FWIW, here are my thoughts:
I found a logo on the Web to use for practice:
This is a tough example which has a lot of problems, as you can see from this enlargement:
The colours "bleed" when next to each other, the colour areas have darkened edges, the colours (and even the white background) are "splotchy" and not uniform, the edges are anti-aliased and have multiple colours in 'em, and so on.
The fact is that a supplied image like that is only suitable for use as a guide for completely re-creating the logo.
You have two choices for re-creating it:
Work on it as a bitmap image.
Work on it as a vector drawing.
Either way, you're going to do a lot of handwork.  I haven't found a way to automatically correct the problems that I mentioned.
If you work on it as a bitmap in PSE, you'll wind up re-drawing by hand each pixel (or each edge of a colour selection, which amounts to about the same thing).
What I wound up doing is using a vector drawing program (CorelDraw, since I can't afford Illustrator) to recreate the logo.  Even though I'm quite rusty, it didn't take too long to use the Bezier curve tool to create the coloured shapes.  I simply used CDR's bitmap trace tool to vectorize the type.  Once I had the vector drawing, everything is wonderful because vector shapes are resolution and size independent.  It was a snap to export the drawing for the Web as a transparency-enabled PNG image without anti-aliasing, reducing it by 85%:
    Hope these thoughts help....

  • PNG transparency not working when importing in AfterEffects

I have been saving the pictures for Web & Devices -- PNG-8, transparency is checked, as far as Matte goes, I've selected "none" .... however, when I upload the images into After Effects, they all have white backgrounds instead of being transparent! I have combed the archives and can't seem to figure out what my problem is. If I ticked transparency, shouldn't it be transparent??
Even with transparency selected, if I do click Matte, it will use that color as the background in AfterEffects. But especially if I have "none" selected for matte, why is there a background showing up? I realize that I could try PNG-24, but file size is absolutely essential, down to the kilobyte, so I need to keep it at PNG-8.

If I ticked transparency, shouldn't it be transparent??
No. AE doesn't do palette based transparency. The image is not really transparent, it's just one color being tagged as such that a rendering device (browsers for instance) will blend in teh background pixels in place of the color. It just doesn't go together with how AE works. As Rick said, you will have to use 24bit PNGs.

  • Matte not working when using batch conversion

I'm trying to batch convert a whole lot of images from .png
alpha transparency images to .png or .gif index transparency
    images.
when i export a single image using the fireworks ide i have
to set the matte value to black otherwise i get a white halo around
the image as in figure "A". If i set the matte to black then i get
the results in Figure "B" which is what i'm after.
    CLICK
    THIS FOR THE IMAGE
    Here is my question;
when i try to BATCH proces a number of files using the
setings in figure "B" (Black matte) i still get the white halo.
does anyone know of a work around for this or maybe i'm doing
    something wrong.
    thanks in advance

  • Save for web gif loop settings not working

Photoshop CC 2014 Mac Pro 10.8.5
When I change looping settings from "once" to "forever" when saving a gif it only loops once. I tried multiple times. In the end what got it to work was changing looping back and fourth from "once" to "forever" over and over and over until randomly the preview started looping. At that point when I saved it worked correctly.

I’m not really sure; it could be a Mac problem.
This is the Adobe statement on Lion:
Mac OS 10.7 has some exciting new features such as Autosave, Restore, Versioning, Full Screen Mode, and more multi-touch gestures. For Adobe applications to fully support these features, additional product development is required. Adobe is working to address this issue.
There is one other thing you could try. Open a photo in the Editor and then hold down the Cmd+Opt+Shift Keys and press the letter S
It’s also possible to delete the save for web preferences and then re-start the program to re-build them. This involves holding down Cmd+Opt keys and clicking Save for Web under the File menu. However this may not be possible if save for web is grayed out.
Please let us know if you get it fixed.

  • Garbage matte not working!!!

I am having this problem where the lines and bounding boxes around a matte 4,8 or 16 point do not actually line up with the edge of the matte, making it virtually impossible to get the matte to the proper place. Furthermore in many cases the video will vanish completely when a matte is added unless the matte positions are left unchanged...
long story short, this severely limits what i can do with my projects!!!

    >i just tried your suggestion of applying the matte to a duplicate layer
Not what I tried to explain.
    New example:
Video layer 3: Copy of the clip (or background), NO garbage matte applied here.
Video layer 2: The clip with the garbage matte applied
    Video layer 1: Background
Click on clip in Video layer 2, and then click on the garbage matte effect in "Video Effects".
Now do the adjustments to the garbage matte.
Deselect the garbage matte effect in "Video Effects" and remove (or click the eye-ball) in Video layer 3.
This (the above) works quite fine for me.
Your other problem I have never seen, but you should see if you somehow have managed to get keyframes when you have moved the still around when placing it to where you wanted it.
Some people have said that the garbage matte bug has been fixed in CS4.

  • PNG transparency not working?

    Using PS version 7.0...
I've made an image with a shadow along the top  portion, and saved it as PNG-24 to preserve transparency,  but it comes out as seen in this screen shot.  I've tried  various ways of saving the image, but nothing I do gives me the desired  result.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

You should have no problem saving a transparent or partially transparent PNG file, even just using File - Save As...
Edit:  I re-read your post and noted that you're using Photoshop 7.0.  That's pretty old, and I'm not sure but you may have to use File - Save for Web.
You're probably aware of this, but I'll mention it anyway:
How you view/display the PNG file matters...  Browsers render transparency, but image viewers often do not.  Was the screenshot you displayed rendered in a web browser?  Please feel free to download and use whatever parts you like from this web page to test with:

  • Save for web not working for .PNG?

When I slice up a .psd file and then go file > save for web and select to save the images as .png it does not work for some reason. No matter what I select it only uses jpeg. I am using Photoshop CS2.
    Any suggestions?

As Zeno said, file format selection is per slice, not a global override. Select al lslices, then pick the PNG options.

  • CS5 export to transparent png - not working

I have tried every think I know to get a png optimized transparently though fireworks cs5. I have read prior forum post, and watched several tutorials indicating ways to do this and when i try they do not work.
I created the image in photoshop and exported it to a png file. Then i opened it in fireworks in an attempt to make the png much smaller. The image will be overlaying a patterned background on the web so needs to be totallly transparent. I've tried every combination of export option and still, when I put the image in my site there is a white background.
Ive tried png-8  with alpha transparency and changed the matte to nothing. The main window in fireworks never gets rid of the white background and when i export it's still white on my site.
I've tried png-32 with both alpha and index.
When i use the png exported from photoshop on my site it looks exactly how I want it, but the file size it too large so that's why Im putting it in fireworks  but when i export it from there it's not transparent.
    help!!  - Kim

Sorry, i was not certain about your level...
You may be interested in knowing that another tool optimizes png files beyond what Fireworks can do - and I would avoid Photoshop's abysmal png export for production. As you are probably aware of, Photoshop's web export does not allow us to save an indexed png file with full transparency - something FW was always good at.
    Try Color Quantizer: http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html
It allows for png files with full transparency to be saved with limited colour palettes exceeding 256 colours!  With CQ you can optimize png files to the fullest, while still retaining an excellent visual quality, since you can optimize easily to a limited palette of, for example, 512 or 1024 (or a custom number of colours). Extremely useful.
It also optimizes the transparent areas, and will automatically remove any bitmap data from those areas (which are not visible).
And, even better, a simple quality mask brush tool assures you have maximum control over the inclusion of even tiny splotches of colour you wish to retain.
I have long left FW behind for my png optimization, because of CQ. It's brilliant, and still somewhat of a hidden gem. Try it out, you might be pleasantly surprised. And it's a free download.

  • Why does animated .gif not work with windows?

I have created an animated .gif to place in a powerpoint presentation, but when I sent it to my client who used a windows computer, it does not work. When I try to open the .gif in my windows 98 virtual machine, it says it has errors.
I created it in photoshop CC using the timeline and saving it with "save for web".

AAAAAAAGGGGGGHHH!  Stupid Powerpoint corrupted the files when it "packaged" them
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
It is very difficult to figure out what my client is doing on his end.
It won't let me mark you both as correct.

  • Has anyone been able to contact Adobe to learn why their Flash Player does not work on Mac OS 10.6.8, no matter how many updates you install?  This seems like a big error by Adobe.

I have thee Mac computers with Mac OS 10.6.8, one of which is a Mac Pro.  No matter how many updates I install from Adobe, their Flash Player does not work on any of these 3 computers.  I don't know how to contact Adobe Systems about this problem, but I think it is their responsibility to make sure that their so-called "universal" software works proplerly on a relatively recent operating system like OS 10.6.8 that is still in widespread use.  When you install the updates, nothing happens -- not even an error message.  What is the point of a universal player that is not universal?  It works fine on my MacBook Pro with OS 9 Mavericks, but it does not work at all -- indeed, has never worked -- on my 3 Macs with OS 10.6.8.  Has anyone contacted Adobe Systems to find out why the Flash Player does not work with OS 10.6.8 and what they plan to do about it?

Where are you getting Flash from?
Get the appropriate dmg installer here and then run it.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
If it still won't install, do these two things: First uninstall any Flash by going into the second level Hard Drive Library>Internet Plug-ins, and trash the Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt. Then boot into Safe Boot, Shift at the startup chime (give it much longer than a usual boot) and run the installer while booted in Safe Boot.

  • Animated gif do not work properly on N85

I bought recently an N85 and downloaded some animated gif pictures and they do not run fluently as they should. The SAME gifs work great on both the E51 and 5700. What is the problem with the new photo viewer in N85?
Another issue I have with the photo viewer is that I transfered 50 photos to the memory (Sandisk micro SDHC Ultra 8gb class 6) and when I browse the photos its very slow and some pictures are pixely for a long time when viewing them.

So, it is a general problem in iOS 8.x.x
    Awesome....
So I got a ridiculous slow ipad 3 with lots of glitches and not working multigestures.

    Hi .
I am having problems getting animated gifs to play in firefox 5 i am using a photo gallery script to show these files it works in every other browser i have access to (most of them on Linux and windows Xp and win7 ) if i use FF5 as a file manager and navigate to the files they run but not from a web page this is only with firefox 4 and 5 not got previous to 4 to test .

Right . this looks like it may be a problem with the way FF5 is handling various methods of viewing images i use the following code .
    <pre><nowiki><a class="thumbnail" href="#thumb"><img src="photos/IMG_7039 EOS-1D Mark III copy.jpg" width="100px" height="75px" border="0"><span><img src="photos/Animations/IMG_7039 EOS-1D Mark III copy.gif"></span></a></nowiki></pre>

    top: 0;
left: 230px; /*position where enlarged image should offset horizontally */
    z-index: 50;

to create the gallery now if i navigate directly to the dir with the gif images in they work ok but if i use the gallery method they fail .

  • .gif animations not working and image thumbnail issues

    Hello,
I hope that someone can help me out.
I have animated .gif images on my iWeb site and they just recently stopped working, and I cant figure it out.
    These are my issues:
Recently iWeb wont show my animated .gifs as they should. (I have found that this still kind of works in IE, but not FF or Safari) In iWeb my .gifs show as a video clip, but once I publish the site, it only shows up as a single image and not an animation. Also the options on my site that allow users to switch back and forth between showing the miniature thumb nails of my images for the slideshow and not showing them do not show up all the time. The .gifs are also not showing up inside the miniature thumbnails as well.
Also note: Those miniature little thumbnails show up very fuzzy as well. This doesn't seem like it should be like that. Am I over looking something important?
Not sure what I have to do to fix these issues. I have looked to see if I am missing an update or something, but it appears that I am up to date.
    Can anyone help me out?

    Hi Neil,
    I have the same problem.
I created a short title animation with EDGE, you can download it here : https://creative.adobe.com/share/829a6ca9-7f26-4ee5-8120-a5da388e3c33
Once in inDesign, I create a web content overlay that I link to my html animation.
I turn ON auto play and set a delay of 0.25 sec. The article that contains the animation is the third of my folio.
If I preview the article ONLY, the animation fires correctly however if I preview the whole folio, the title appears but with no animation what so ever.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    J.
