Gift Card for kid living in the US / I'm in Canada
I can't believe how hard this is. I wish to buy a gift card that my kid can use in the US, but I live in Canada, Sure I can buy a gift card from teh apple store - but they want to SHIP IT! arrgh! Can't we just email the certificate? Where do I put his email in? Am I really having to ask this question? no FAQ? UI is so bad that this is not easy?
I also know that I have to use my Canadian credit card, but I have to purchase a US based gift card.

Sorry, but there's no way you can purchase a gift certificate for someone in another country. You can only buy a gift from the Canadian iTunes Store, and those gifts are not valid for someone living in the US. It does say that in the screen where you purchase the gift, by the way.
And I know of no way for you to purchase a US iTunes prepaid card using an Canadian credit card, though it's possible some independent reseller would be willing to accept a Canadian card. The prepaid card would have to be shipped, though.

My 13-year-old son was given an iTunes gift card which apparently he cannot use without either giving credit card info or setting up a paypal account. I am not giving my teenager my credit card, and he is too young to legally enter into a paypal contract. Can he use this gift, or what? Any suggestions? If not, we will tell his relatives not to bother with gift cards this year.

Windows XPInstead of trying to setup a new account directly, go to the iTunes Music Store and find the link that says "Redeem Gift Certificate" or similar. If you're not already logged into an account when you do this, then it will guide you through creating a new account, and it will not require a credit card if you do it this way.

What you have read is correct; gift cards are country specific. So only if iTunes cards are issued in Vietnam, and if they are if you can find a retailer there that sells such cards and would accept an out-of-country credit card, would you be able to purchase a gift card for your brother. The same would apply to any other country.

The Original Poster got someone on the phone who knew how to "play" the system to get around that and squirt out a gift card "for customer satisfaction". The person you talked to was less familiar with how to play the system, so simply restated the standard company policy.
If you really did buy it 14 days ago today, take it all back to the store and politely insist that you get the gift card you feel are entitled to. Exactly how they process that transaction, and whether you leave with the same computer you brought in, is their problem. -

If you have a credit card on your account then its details have to complete - and asking for their details is also a way of checking that you have a valid billing address in that country. As long as you are buying content for yourself and not trying to gift content (you can't use your balance for gifting) then the purchase price (plus any applicable taxes) should be deducted from your balance. My friend gave me a $25 iTunes gift card for Christmas, so I switched to the US store and spend most of it with 11¢ remaining. *Now I want to switch back to my original store, but I can't. iTunes keeps saying "You have a store credit balance; you must spend your balance before you can change stores.*
You might just have to contact Apple and ask them to remove it (losing it). Usually people clear a balance by buying one song and having the exact remainder charged to their credit card, but if you don't have a US credit card you cannot do that.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
