Gift iPad for someone without a computer

I just bought an iPad for my brother, who does not have a computer. So, I set up the iPad via my MacBook Pro. (I had no idea until I opened the box that an iPad can't set itself up!). It's working, but the iPad is named "Mark's iPad" (me) rather than "Ed's iPad" (him). There's also an issue with iTunes on his iPad - iTunes thinks it's my iPad and I'm having trouble changing its mind - when I enter his Apple ID into iTunes, it says ot allready exits. Well yea, I just created it a few minutes earlier trying to make the iPad his rather than mine.
Anyone else have this problem and know what to do? This can't be the 1st iPad purchased for someone without a computer!
Thanks!

Thanks. I hadn't considered that route. Seems very do-able. Will let you know if it works. Would have to repopulate the iPad's music and apps, but that goes pretty quickly.

Not necessarily... Remember the iPad does do Phone calls
I assume you intended to say does not.
(At least not without an app)

Look, any officially unlocked GSM iPhone will work in India. You purchase from Dubai, no FaceTime, and Dubai is part of the UAE. You purchase anywhere but India, and you will have NO warranty or support. Frankly, doesn't make any sense to me why you want to do this...and don't bother telling me you save hundreds of dollars...still doesn't make any sense. Do a forum search here. We get posts daily, from users in India, who didn't purchase their iPhones in India...guess what? They all have problems. You want to join that bunch? It's your money, have at it.

  • Can I setup new iPad for someone else from my computer without it messing up my iTunes account?

Would like to know if anyone has done this with success.  My mom wants to mail me her new iPad so I can set it up for her.
    Please advise and thank you.

There is no need for you to use your computer to set up an iPad for your mother. You can do it over the air with WiFi and then you do not have to worry about syncing your content to her device - which I would not recommend anyway.
Why don't you just talk mom through it over the phone. It is a very simple process. Take a look at this. Or if she insists on you setting it up, do it this way.

The gentleman from Philadelphia knows of whence he speaks when it comes to using more than one ID on the iPad but I also recommend that you NOT use your ID on the iPad and this is why.

  • HT201209 how can I buy an iTunes gift certificate for someone living in Colombia?

How do I buy an iTunes gift certificate from US iTunes for someone who lives in Colombia?  The fine print on the gift certificate page says it can only be redeemed in a US iTunes store.
Is this true? And if so is there a work around?

OK, I see what point you were trying to make previously. You are talking about the misspelling of the name. That was SO not clear in your post. As you can tell, both roamminggnome and I missed your intent.
If you want to educate people on the common misspelling of the country Colombia, then state your case clearly. You will get a lot further that way. Being condescending about the mistake is not productive, and you won't achieve your goal that way.
That having been said, it seems a bit pointless to bring up a two year old post that has a spelling error in it and then post to it only to call out that error.
This is not an English course - it is a technical user to user forum. We have to put up with egregious spelling errors daily on this site. It is not the place to start a campaign on the proper spelling of the country Colombia. You might want to try to direct that considerable indignation somewhere where it will actually make a difference.
Sorry for the misspelling in my post of the country. I can promise you, I won't make that mistake again.

  • Is there any way to update my iPad to ios5 without a computer

No.  You have to get there first and all subsequent updates can be done without a computer.

  • Setting up an ipad for someone who doesn't have a computer

I want to get my parents an ipad but they don't have a computer.  I'm happy to use my computer but I don't want to mess up my own itunes account.  Any pointers on how to do this would be appreciated.  They are both in the late 80s so making them tech savvy at this point is out of the question but I think many of the aps will be very stimulating for them.  My plan is to set them up with email addesses, load some good aps and give it to them ready to go.

You no longer need a computer to set-up an iPad. It can all be set-up from the iPad as long as you have a wireless connection:

  • Setting up a gift iPad for a different country

    Hi,
Here's what I am trying to do.
I live in US and my sister lives in India. I am going to visit her soon. I bought an iPad 2 for her as a gift.
I would like to do the initial setup of the iPad when I am in US before I go to India and load the iPad with a bunch of games, apps etc...so she can start having fun with it right away without having to do all the set up and look for apps in the app store.
So I am thinking of creating a new gmail account just for use with iTunes store [without a credit card by selecting the 'none' payment option] which both of us will have access to. Then select USA as the country [as I will be in US when setting it up] when I turn on the iPad first time and go through the set up. Then I will use the newly created Apple ID with the new email address to download a bunch of apps.
My question is, after I give it to her in India, will she have to somehow change the country to India in the Apple ID account setting or can she continue to use the US account? Will there be any issues with this kind of setup long term or should I change the country on the account to India?
In case if we change the country to India in the Apple account, will all the apps I installed in US continue to work on the iPad [from other discussions I see that they may not appear in the 'purchased' list]
    Thanks for any input

    - To purchase apps in the Inea store the account (e.g., address) has to be associated with India. For paid apps, the payment medthod also must be associated with India. Gift cards can only be usd in the Country's store in whihc it was purchased A gift card purchased in the USA can't be used in the India store.
    - You can oly purchase items i the country's store where you are physically located
    - Unless the app is lock to the USA, it can be used in other countries.  Some like Pandora are lock. If the an app purchased in the USA in not available in the India store, she can't update the app in India.

  • I would like to be able to take a video from my camera and download it to several iPads for playback without using iTunes?  Possible?

I am taking a video for high school and would like to be able to download on multiple iPads without using iTunes.  Is there an app that would aid me in doing this?

If you have the Apple Camera Connection Kit (CCK) and the video that your camera generates is in one of the formats tha the iPad supports then you can directly move it to the iPad with a USB connection.
