Gigabit ENET - Lost Partitions & Size on ATA (500 GB) - Plus Shutdown Prob

Dual 1.8GHz Newer Tech Upgraded to Gigabit Dual. 1.5GB RAM
Boot disk is 128GB ATA - no issues
Other ATA is 500 GB (WD) [4 partitions] - only shows up as 128GB.
Applied update to Leopard 10.5.2
Have run repair permissions before and after.
Disk Utility in 10.4.x recognizes all 500GB, 10.5.x 128GB only.
Also, Leopard does not shut down (after initial install - where everything appeared to run well).
Are these still remaining symptoms waiting for 10.5.3?

Found the SpeedTools driver.

  • How to set desired partition size on Satellite C850-12D with W7 Pro?

    Hi all,
I recently got a new laptop, Satellite Pro C850-12D with Seven Pro: the disk (500 Gb) is initially partitionned like this:
    - a small hidden, 1.46 Gb
    - the C: one, 449.47 Gb (visible by the user)
    - a hidden one, 14.83 Gb
I would reduce the C: partition to 100 Gb in order to create a new one for DATA.
So, I begin the process using the Seven tools for disk managing but the disposable size after reduction seems limited to a max of 226.685 Gb: C remains higher or equal to 233 570 Gb.
I tried defragmentation of C but its minimal size remains 233 570 Gb
Is there a method to overcome this limit and achivce my goal of 100 Gb?

    Hi
Before changing some partitions on the HDD I strongly recommend creating a Recovery disk!
The Toshiba recovery media creator helps you to create such disk and this is needed in cases something would be wrong with your HDD.
    Back to partition issue:
You will need to use an 3rd party tool like *Gparted* in order to change the partition size.

  • Unable to boot to Vista after changing Mac OS partition size

    Greetings,
After creating an additional Mac OS partition, I can't boot into Vista anymore. Any way to fix it without re-installing?
I have an intel iMac running Leopard, and Vista on a bootcamp NTFS partition. That was working fine.
I created a new partition on the drive (using space from my Leopard partition) and installed Tiger on it for a short project.  I’ve been dual booting between Leopard and Tiger just fine.
However, now I’m unable to boot using the Vista partition.  I boot to a black screen with white text that states "No bootable device, hit any key" error. Of course hitting a key does nothing.
I can boot into Leopard/Tiger just fine, and can see the Vista partition from Leopard and view the files as usual. However I just can't boot into Vista. I tried running the repair tool from the Vista install disk, but that doesn't work on the NTFS partition (I think it doesn't see a windows partition to fix). Disk utility from Leopard shows the vista partition as the right size and formatted as NTFS.
I'm really stumped by the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    TestDisk - CGSecurity.
TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.
    TestDisk can
    * Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
    * Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
    * Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
    * Fix FAT tables
    * Rebuild NTFS boot sector
    * Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
    * Fix MFT using MFT mirror
    * Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock
    # Mac partition map
    # NTFS ( Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 )
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

Seeing you could lose everything, I would definitely use WinClone while in OS X to backup Vista, and CCC or SuperDuper to backup your OS X volumes (or Apple DU Restore, just be sure to turn off "Ignore Ownership" and repair permissions afterward, and then rerun 10.5.2 if possible).

  • Partition size limitation?

I have run into the following problem when trying to set a new large hard disk on my solaris 9 machine:
If I use 100% of the space (200GB) on the disk to create my solaris partition and then proceed to define the slices I will always get a Warning message when performing the label command from the partition prompt:
    Warning: no backup labels
When in fact I used the "Free Hog" option to set it up and there is a backup slice.
If I proceed to run newfs the process will hang and eventually the entire machine will lock up.
If I reduce the solaris partition to 25% (50GB) and follow the same steps I do not get any warning message and the newfs process finishes normally.
I experience exact same problem at 50% (100GB). So my limit is somewhere between 50 and 100 GB for the partition size. Is there some kind of work around for this? I have a solaris 8 machine that uses a 100GB partition without any problems so it seems unlikely that I am hitting some kind of OS limitiation...
The hard drive is an ata-133 (maxtor) however it's running at ata-100 due to motherboard chipset limitations... I don't know if this could be causing a problem or not...

I'd try to install Solaris 9 from the CD "Software 1 of 2" (that is, not using the installation CD).
At the stage where the video card, keyboard and mouse is configured select "bypass". The installer
    runs in ascii mode now.
Now. in case of a system hang I hope that you are able to see some kernel error message and you
may get a clue what the problem is.

  • Partition size for Time Machine

Just purchased 500 GB Maxtor OneTouch4Plus ex hd and want to set up partition to use TM to backup my 120 GB MacBkPro running Leopard. How big should the partition be for reasonable use?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hello Pax4us,
3 - 4 times the space that your existing data takes up. Sooooo...
10 Gigs of data on the internal = 40 Gig partition size.
That said, with 500 available - 100 Gig will be OK too.
    Regards

  • RAID + LVM partition size

I made a software RAID 5, and placed lvm on top of it. The home partition should be around 500GiB, but Krusader says it is only 70GiB. I named the RAID md5 (to remind me of its level), yet it got somehow renamed to md127. So is everyting working as it should and Krusader is misreading partition sizes, or should I fix something?

While it is true that RAIDed SSD don;t support TRIM, most have a process called garbage collection in place that functions similar to TRIM. I ha e had a set of RAIDed drives on my system for some time and haven't seen any performance slowdown. Of course, SSDs are very fast in case and I don't benchmark the drives often. Garbage collection is kind of a mysterious process in that manufactures don't talk too much about it. I do know it usually takes place when drives are idle, so if your drives are constantly loaded, then it might not be a good idea to use RAID.

  • WinXP partition size

Can anyone advise me as to what partition size would be ideal for windows gaming? I have a 500 GB hard drive and I want to be able to play windows games without having the gameplay suffer due to insufficient memory. Should I go with the 32 GB partition or should I customize the size?
Thanx in advance for any help

First of all, if you're going to install ANYTHING, you will install the HL series.
But second, the key phrase there was "I heard". I haven't installed HL2 Episode 2 yet (the first sentence here notwithstanding) so I can't be sure.
However, also keep in mind that HL2 and following uses the Steam infrastructure, which may itself be rather bloated. Also, HL2 is usually bundled with several other games (for example, Team Fortress and Counterstrike) and so I suspect it is Steam plus the multiplicity of games which takes up the large amount of spacee. That said, once Steam is installed, it is installed for good, so the next Steam game(s) will not take up as much space.
At any rate, I'm assuming that with a 500GB hard drive, Master of Illusion can afford a sizeable >32GB Windows partition. The reason I suggested 100GB as an upper bound is just that many computers ship with a hard drive no bigger than that, so it seems unlikely that bigger than that will be necessary. Exactly how big the partition should be will of course depend on which games Master of Illusion wants to install, whether they will be uninstalled, and how much space Master of Illusion wants to reserve for Mac OS and/or an iTunes library...

  • Disk Utility - smallest partition size

I have new 500 GB external drive. Using Disk Utility I created GUID partition schema and created 4 partition - 3 x Mac OS Extended (Journaled) a 1 x FAT32 (initially with same size). Disk Utility doesn't let me resize 1st partion (the highest one) and 4th partition (the lowest one) smaller then cca. 50 GB (divider with 2 arrows changed to divider with 1 arrow). (I don't know if it's possible with other partitions to size them smaller then cca. 50 GB since I want them have large and I use disk already.) I didn't find anything about this in help, books or internet.
Is there limit in Disk Utility about minimum partition size? (It looks like cca. 10 % from drive size).

    V.K. wrote:
it looks like DU will not allow you to create a partition smaller than one tenth of the disk size.
when i do it on a 200GB drive the smallest size it let's me make is 20Gb, and for a 500GB drive it's 50GB.
I guess that's a safeguard against creating too many partitions.

I thought so. Like most filesystems, all the information must be stored in the bootsector or whatever it's called with BSD, and the total number of files is related to the sizes and total numbers of partitions, so like FAT32 or even NTFS, HFS has it's practical and theoretical limits.
I believe HFS has two bootrecords or equivalents, one for backup and this adds to the storage space issue.
Going back to the old 1.44MB floppies, the unformatted size was over 1.7 MB and Norton and MS took advantage of that, but not all disk readers were happy with what they did. MS once shipped Windows on a set of 1.7 MB floppies. Of course this was BC (before CDs).

  • HT5639 I am attempting to install windows 7 ultimate on a mid2012 production macbook pro using Bootcamp 5 in Mountain Lion. Whenever I set the partition size and tell it to continue, the program quits unexpectedly. I have done this about 5 times now. Sugg

The lead-in above pretty much states the problem. I am attempting to install Windows 7 from a disk, but that is not the issue. Boot Camp 5 just quits and reopens. I then repeat. Help.

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • Data recovery software that help recover lost partition due to using Disk Recovery Assistant on a 2TB HDD?

I Just use the Disk Recovery Assistant on my 2TB HDD and it wipe it clean. What are the best data recovery tool out there that allow me to recover the lost partition and see the file in folders view not files view like in some data recovery like Disk Drill?
using ML 10.8 something I tried appleXsoft but no luck.

    My best suggestion is
    Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/
Download the free trial version of the software and use the option "Search Lost/Deleted Volumes", It will scan the drive and show you all lost partitions list on preview. Once you click on the selected partition it will show you again 3 options ,
Quick Recovery- This option is very effective on case of volume corruption
Advanced Recovery- This option recovers data from formatted volume and scans each and every block of volume for lost data.
Deleted File Recovery.- It scans unused blocks of volume to recover deleted data.
On successful recovery the software will show the files in folders view with the folder structure..In case you are unable to see the desired results you would need to go for Raw Recovery which will show results on file basis. This option is only required incase the previous option does not give you the desired results.
    Cheers !!

  • 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020:  "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K"

I picked up a 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020 external USB drive, for an enlarged Time-Machine disk. The box says that it's usable on a Mac, but Disk Utility doesn't seem to like it.
When I attempt to erase it, it sits there, indefinitely as far as I can tell, trying to format it saying, "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K." I am able to format it as MS-DOS FAT32, but not in any MacOS (Extended) format.
Since it seems to be complaining about partition sizes, I was able to it into one partition containing almost all of the disk content, and another, "junk" partition that I presumably won't use very often. Unfortunately, the smallest "junk" partition it would let me create was about 190GB.
So, waddaya folks think? Should I return it to the store as a bad disk, or is there any reason to think that it's behaving in some sense correctly?

    Hello mr88cet
In Disk Utility highlight the external hard drives first icon on the left side list and select the Partition tab. Then decide on the # of partitions you want, then click the Option box and set the Partition map Scheme to GUID Partition Table. Now then you should be able continue to on with any multiple partition sizing (if more than 1 was selected) and format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled)...
Just follow the Disk Utility prompts, it's really easy after you've done it a time or two.

You can resize the keyboard window, positioning the mouse pointer at the edge of the window, clicking and dragging to the desired size.

  • Boot Camp Partition Size/External HDD recommendation

After updating software, hardware, downloading Boot Camp Asst, and installing Windows XP Pro (have not yet downloaded Mac drivers or software, nor have I submitted registration of my WinXP Pro software, still have 29 days), I realized that I set the partition size too small and need to resize it. I read in other postings that I can copy the Windows partition to an external HDD from the Mac OSX side, then run Boot Camp again, delete the "too small" Windows partition, then run Boot Camp again and reset the partition size larger. Does anyone have detailed instructions to do this?
Also, can anyone suggest an external HDD for this purpose? I need to be able to share files between a PC and my 17" MBP running OS X 10.4.6. Specifically, I need to share (for editing purposes) audio files created with PC-based software with the Windows side of my MBP. The PC has XP Pro and MacDrive6 for Windows installed. I read the "Sharing a FireWire drive between Mac and PC" document on "The X Lab" website and, based on this, am leaning toward getting a FW (not USB) HDD and formatting it in Mac OS Extended format (not sure how to do this but cross that bridge when I get there). Does this sound reasonable? When I run Boot Camp again and have to choose between NTSF and FAT32 should I choose NTSF? Will I also need "SharePoints" or other software to share the Mac's FW drive with the PC?
I may have the option to share and backup files over the workplace network (if I take the time to set it up). Does anyone know if there advantages/disadvantages to this option?
Thanks for answers to these questions. Any help would be very much appreciated. Best!

  • Maximum Partition Size for External Drive using DU

    Hello,
I just purchased a 750g Maxtor USB drive for use with Time Machine. When I went into DU to partition and format the drive I was surprised to find that every time I went to create a single partition using all available space, the operation would error out. I was however able to create two partitions with the largest one sized around 650g or so. I was using the Mac file system.
This just seems odd to me. Does OS X have a maximum allowable partition size that prevents me from creating one large partition?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi Robert
You should be able to delete the partition, try again using the instruction in the following article:
