Gigabit Ethernet for Air...

I purchased the 10/100 mbps Apple ethernet adapter with my new air... It took overnight to restore my backup from my Time Capsule (much slower than my previous Macbook Pro).
I know that USB is theoretically limited to 480 mbps.
I know that the Apple adapter is limited to 100 mbps.
USB can handle more than 100 mbps even if isn't going to reach theoretical limit of 480 mbps - Especially when I'm not doing anything but backing up/restoring.
If you go to Amazon - there are a few Gigabit adapters that have reviews from Air owners that have experienced transfer throughput that's a lot higher than 100 mbps...
I'd like an alternative to the Apple solution, but before I purchase something - I want to hear from people who have first hand experience with an adapter as a recommendation. Some of these adapters required beta drivers which I do not want to meddle.
thanks

Thanks for the advice but that's a bit much for an ethernet adapter
I tried to find more information about the Presto unit but their website is horrible - No information about their own product aside from a press release and a pretty picture.
I guess no one has tried this little comparison so what the ****, I might as well and post my results. I went to Micro Center and purchased a Belkin Gigabit USB 2.0 Network Adapter.
Here are my results.
802.11 N Wireless to my Time Capsule (1st gen)
Write: 7.3 Mbps (58.4 mbps)
Read: 7.6 Mbps (60.8 mbps)
Apple USB "Fast" Ethernet adapter to Time Capsule (1st gen)
Write: 11.1 Mbps (88.8 mbps)
Read: 8.2 Mbps (65.6 mbps)
Belkin "Gigabit" USB 2.0 Network Adapter to Time Capsule (1st gen)
Write: 20 Mbps (160 mbps)
Read: 28 Mbps (224 mbps)
So there you have it - I don't expect to get Gigabit speed 125 Mbps (1000 mbps), but getting nearly twice the write speed makes backing up and restoring a lot faster. Interesting to note - I have read posts that state there will be issues with Gigabit (1000 mbps) over USB 2.0 (480 mbps) - I noticed none...
The Belkin adapter is not as pretty as the Apple adapter - The blue LEDs can be used as a flash light they are so bright, but it does a better job.

  • How to use the (gigabit) ethernet for data exchange and WLAN for Internet?

    I have following setup:
    - MB Pro SL 10.6
    - Desktop PC Windows 7
    - Wireless Printer
    - Netgear WLAN Router
At the moment all my data and internet communication is done via the WLAN router on 192.168.1.x That works fine and I can exchange data, print and surf the internet. My problem is that big data exchanges > 10GB take ages via my 54Mbit WLAN Connection. Furthermore the WLAN router is far away from the PC so that it is not possible to plug in the Ethernet Cable of the PC and the MB to the router.
Now I've thought that there must be a possibility to use a 1 gigabit (cross) cable (like in the 90s ;)) to connect the MB and the PC directly. I know that I will need different IP ranges and so on, but I have no clue how to do that.
The final solution should be that the setup stays as it is (data exchange, print, internet via WLAN) and that additional it is possible to connect PC and MAC some times for big transfers via a Gigabit ethernet cable. because I only want to connect those two machines I don't think that a switch makes any sense, or?
Does someone know how to do that?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Well if it were 2 Macs, I would configure each Mac with a fixed IP address (same subnet as my router, but outside of the routers DHCP assignment range).
I would give the same fixed IP address to both my Airport AND my ethernet interfaces. I would do the same to the other Mac using another fixed IP address.
My network service order would have the ethernet higher than the Airport on both systems.
Normally I would use WiFi, so ethernet would be idle and out of the loop.
When I wanted faster transfers, I would connect each Mac to the router via their own ethernet cables, and the Mac would automatically detect that the ethernet became available, and would switch to use the faster ethernet. Since Airport and ethernet have the same fixed IP address, I could even do this in the middle of a file transfer and no one would notice as packets were always going to/from the same IP addresses, just using a different route, which doesn't matter.
NOTE: I've been doing this on Macs since Mac OS X 10.3 days (or was it 10.2; to long ago to remember).
However, you have thrown a Windows system into the mix, and since I do not use Windows, I do not have a clue about what can be done on Windows. However, maybe this will give you some ideas, and asking the right questions in a Windows oriented forum may provide the Windows side of this setup.
Sorry, that is the best I can do. Maybe my reply will encourage someone else to offer their approach.

  • Can you use Airport for internet and Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing?

i would like to complicate my network setup by using my Airport connection to the internet for internet access and then use the Gigabit Ethernet connection between my G5 tower and the MacBook Pro for file sharing, Compressor's distributed rendering, and possibly iTunes music/video sharing for Front Row.
is this possible? could i just run a cat 6 cable between the two and network them together? or do i need to get a Gigabit Switch?
i suppose i could just try running the cable between them and see what happens. i don't think these new machines require cross-over cables since the ethernet ports auto-detect that now, but is a cat 5e or cat 6 cable required for Gigabit speed?
    thanks,
    scott

Yes it would work. The Ethernet network would be used for local file transfers and the Airport for internet. However you will need to make sure Ethernet is at the top of the list of network ports in the Network Preferences.

  • Will any Cat5 Ethernet cables work equally well for Gigabit ethernet ports?

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I must. Are some Cat 5 Ethernet cables designed for Gigabit Ethernet? The Airport Extreme Base Station(b/g) uses Gigabit Ethernet for its LAN and WAN ports. I think my Comcast modem's single Ethernet port does, also. Currently, I use a Cat 5 100Mbs cable to connect the modem to the AEBS. So, I'm wondering if I can get faster throughput with a Cat 5 1000Mbs cable (if such a thing exists).

In addition to Bob's comments, it's important to understand that Gigabit Ethernet requires using all four pairs of wires inside the cable ... regardless of whether that cable is CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 certified. The real difference of the categories is how high of a frequency can they support. For example CAT-6 is rated for 10 Gigabit traffic. It's not that CAT-5 won't work, but it's not guaranteed to do so.
If you have any Ethernet runs in home that is supplying connections for both data & phone lines on the same cable, you will NOT achieve Gigabit speeds on those cables as the installer used at least one of the necessary pairs for the phone line.

  • Airport Extreme with Gigabit Ethernet - Does it have jumbo frame support?

Please, can I get definite answer to this question? I do not need speculations as I read some reviews already. Can we have Apple finally put complete specification of the product rather than "popular one" with attachement of protocol numbers?
I just need simple answer possibly from Apple engineering team to the following questions:
    1. Does current Airport Extreme have support for jumbo frames (everything above 1500bytes per frame)? (if one does not know what that is them perhaps understanding acronym "MTU" can help a bit)
    2. If there is support then what is the maximum supported size of jumbo frame? (Some products do not go above 6k and I read some statistics that traffic somwhere is usually 66% at about 4k jumbo frames and above that there is not much...)
    3. If there is no support then does Apple plan on update for this (firmware or hardware) in the future?
Please, do not tell me that someoene ran something with jumbo frame and it worked as I tried yesterday LaCie Ethernet drive with supposedly setup (I set it myself) of jumbo frame 4k and on soft reboot of the drive it worked when connected to Airp[ort Extreme, but after hard reboot the disk is not visible anymore. I will recover the disk, but I need to understand if I have chance of using jumbo frames that tremendously improve performance with large files (e.g. try movies stored for AppleTV on network drive) when using Airport Extreme with its gigabit Ethernet... or that is just Gigabit Ethernet for product marketing purposes only.
I just need reliable answer by product specification that should be on paper at Apple, but it is not so I hope that one of guys here has access to some engineering team.
    Thank you,
    Maciek Samsel

  • Imaging support for ax88179 (USB3.0-Gigabit Ethernet adapter

    Hi
I anyone aware whether support for ax88179 (USB3.0-Gigabit Ethernet adapter) will be added in forthcoming ZCM patches/driver updates?
We are running 11.3.2 but are assessing these adapters for imaging a fleet of tablet/notbook machines we have arriving... The docks are only 10/100 and we need gigabit given the number we will have to deploy...!
    Cheers

    Review this TID as well....

Development will need the results to add support.
You may be able to get it working yourself with the NEWID command in the short-term or you may need new drivers added.
Either way, it is best to open an SR but if you have that data in hand, it will speed the process.

  • Good graphics cards for Gigabit Ethernet PowerMac?

Yesterday I ordered a 400 MHz (single processor, of course) Gigabit Ethernet PowerMac running OS 9.2.2 (most likely being upgraded to 10.3 in the future, and then 10.4 if I can get a good enough processor upgrade). I plan on giving it a pretty good deal of upgrades, the graphics card among them. I've researched it, but I'm not clear on how to know which graphics cards would be compatible and which ones wouldn't. Whether you can clear that up for me or simply recommend some good cards, I'd appreciate the help.
I want to spend $150 at the most on a good card, but I'm flexible. Thank you!

    Hi-
The best available graphics card for the Gigabit Ethernet is a Radeon 9800 Pro.
No need to spend extra for the 256MB model, as the 128MB model usually benchmarks faster.
Look around eBay, and you should find one for $100-$120.
Make sure that the card you buy is stated as Mac compatible.

  • Graphics card for G4 Gigabit Ethernet dual boot

I would like to use an Apple 20" LCD display with my Gigabit Ethernet G4 dual 500. It still has the original Rage 128 graphics card.
I have no problem with replacing the card for use under OSX, but this is a dual boot machine, also running 9.2.2, so any graphics card will have to support at least basic monitor functions in OS 9 also.
Since Apple has documented problems using Gigabit Ethernet models with the Radeon 9200, does anyone have any suggestions for a "miracle" card, that will do what I want?
    Thanks!
    G4 Gigabit Ethernet   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi
The Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition may be one possibility. It's an AGP card, has an ADC and DVI connector (and comes with a VGA adapter) and is supported by OS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.1.3 and later.
    http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9000me/radeon9000prome/specs.html
Unfortunately it's no longer available retail but does seem to appear on eBay frequently. Two retail versions were available, one with 64MB VRAM, one with 128MB.

  • Advice for Mac n00b. Gigabit Ethernet

Hey guys and girls. Im new to the Mac OS so I apologise if these questions are a bit thick!
My mate gave me an old G4 tower as a christmas present. As far as I can make out its a G4 400Mhz Gigabit Ethernet model. It has been upgraded with 2 20gig hard drives and 512MB (4x128 sticks) of ram. It has been completely wiped and is now running 10.3.9.
I was thinking of upgrading to tiger and have a couple of questions
Is it worth it on this machine? Is 10.4 different enough to warrent an upgrade?
I have seen some posts that recommend making sure that the firmware is up to date. Checking system profilier it seems mine is quite old, version 3.xxx . Will this have to be upgraded? Its running panther fine at the moment. Also i have heard the some DIMMs can be disabled after the upgrade is there an easy way to check if my memory will work?
If the firmware should be updated I need advice on how best to install OS9. I have the 2 grey cds that came with the mac. Software install and software restore. Could I install os 9 onto my empty second hard drive?
sorry for the long post and thanks for any help

  • ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

    Hi,
This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I don't wish to sound redundant here, but I've been reviewing the vendor's page:
It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.
It's kinda' a long post, but, if you care to get ALL the details, check the following:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7065653&#7065653
I think you'll be satisfied with the explanation.......
Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!

  • Thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet problem

On my new Macbook Air (Intel Core i7) I'm trying to connect to my office network using a Thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, but the network system preferences say that the cable is unplugged. Any suggestions for how I can go about checking what's up?

I had this probem also in 10.9.
I was selecting Thunderbolt 1 from the dropdown list of interfaces.
It took a while to realize that Thunderbolt Ethernet is actually the correct option, lower down in the list.

  • Thunderbolt Gigabit ethernet adapter is recognized - but no internet connection

    Hello.
I just got a new macbook air. I need to connect it to the internet via ethernet cable - thus i purchased the Thunderbolt gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in - and nothing happened.
The cable is being recognized, in the networks section it shows the IP-address etc. and the little dot next to "ethernet thunderbolt" is green. but when I open safari, there is no internet connection.
Why is this? I have updated all available software. I also tried downloading the Thunderbolt Firmware Update (1.2.1) but I'm told it is not supported (i.e. it isn't installed).
Who can help me? I'm quite puzzled and don't seem to be able to find this same problem anywhere on the net.
    Thanks for your help
    enel

Is that quite lousy and am I a fool? ;-) I have turned it off. It didn't do the trick, I had already tried that numerous times.
BUT this time I also switched off the DSLmodem (an idea I hadn't had up until now, strangely enough - I had it only now while actually counting to 15) and then I ran the assistant again and the network was then finally being recognized for the first time.
Then I had to once more turn the router off and finally all the little status buttons turned green.
    Yeah!
Thanks a lot for your help and your readiness to help! I really appreciate it.
