Gigabit wire speed and wireless speed

I'd like to hardwire the gigabit ethernet ports on my Extreme to my TV and game console. Assuming the TV and game console support gigabit, will speeds on the gigabit wired network be inhibited by connecting older (802.11g) laptops to the 802.11n wireless network? I know that speeds are limited by the slowest device connected to the network, but don't know if that extends to wireless devices as well.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Ian

Ian,
The whole thing is pretty much a moot point if you are connecting your network to the Internet. Even "g" wireless speeds are 54 Mbps. That's probably quite a bit faster than your Internet connection speed with your provider, correct?
The Internet connection is almost always a severe "choke" point on any home network. 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps connections won't matter much if the devices have an Internet connection, as is likely with your TV, Game Console, Computers, etc.

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

  • New HH5 and Wireless Speed

    Hello All
Just bought a HH5 and set it up last night.  The wired connections seem fine and I'm connecting at expected speeds of around 66Mbps down and 17.5 up.  However, the wireless speed is poor and giving me only 12Mbps on my Iphone 5 sat right next to the Homehub.  I've tried changing to a fixed channel on 5GHz frequency but to no avail.  Also, for some strange reason the menu in the HH5 states Homehub 4.  I was expecting a firmware update to take place overnight but this didn't happen. So can anyone tell me:
    1. Is there a way to improve the wireless speed?
    2. When do firmware upgrades take place?
    3. Will a firmware upgrade fix the wireless/hub homepage?
    Thank you.

I suspect you might have been sold a HH4 either in error or by design! As to the wireless speeds there are many, many things that can affect this that BT will only accept wired speeds as being the true speed.  You could be using the HH close to a TV - that has been known to affect wireless speed, microwave ovens (when switched on) can affect wireless speeds. Have you switched off smart wireless on the hub (or something like that). It only uses 3 set frequencies and it could be trying to find the best of a bad bunch of frequencies and failing. Switch it off and select something like channel 13 for the 2.4 GHz band and see if that makes a difference.
Also search this forum for topics such as "slow wireless speeds" and you will find lots of advice on how to try and overcome it.

  • Wired Speeds v Wireless speeds HELP !

    Hi
I wonder if anyone technically proficent in these matters would be kind enough share the knowledge with me.
    History : I had option 1 =  Speeds were  3 up/ 37 down ( very stable)
    Upgraded to Option 2
Speeds promised upto 61 down, installed speeds dropped to 27 down max, got onto BT reset all (as I'd done myself many times) and its gone upto 40 down, t always slows back down after a couple of days ???
Also when reset i get 72 down when its  a wired connection, and 43 down when wireless connection even if the laptop is right next to router ?
How can a router lose 30 Mb between wired and wireless when laptop is next to router ??
I have also under BT instruction changed from channel 1 to channel 9 ..
My laptop is a relativly new (2010) Dell model and i assume it has all compatable network adaptors ?
Thats as much as i can tell you
    Any ideas
    Many Thamnks in advance
    Dave

Most sub standard routers transmit at maximum 54meg if they are not an N-draft router, which gives increased speeds and range. The only problem with wireless is that it's too unreliable and subject to interference from phones and other electrical equipment, Which in effect would slow down your connection speeds wirelessly.

  • Bus Speed and Ram Speed Question..thanks

I have recently purchased my first mac! I purchased a refurb but I noticed that the one I purchased has bus speed of 800mhz and the ram has 667mhz. (I did get a 320g hard drive vs a 250g and a 256mb graphics card vs a 128mb) The other one has bus speed of 1066mhz and ram speed has 800mhz. Am I going to notice a difference in the bus/ram speed difference or just stay with the one I purchased?
    thanks

I don't think you will notice a difference. Other system factors (such as video card, system CPU clock speed, amount of RAM installed, speed of hard drive, etc.) will most likely overwhelm any noticeable difference cause by the slower bus speed.
If the price of the refurb was good, you should keep it. I have an online Apple Store refurb myself, and although I know that the latest iMacs are a bit faster, I don't see how that extra speed will be of great benefit to me. I'm much happier with the money I saved on the refurb compared to a new iMac.

  • Speed and wireless question

If I was to purchase one of these AirPort Extreme Wireless N routers, would I notice a speed difference using wireless G?
    Thanks.

    jkapple,
That depends on what you'd be comparing the difference to. For example, if your computer client is 802.11g and you've been using an 802.11g Airport Extreme base station, then no, theortically you shouldn't encounter a difference in speed as you wouldn't be taking advantange of the 802.11n protocol. You may also already be capped in network connectivity to the Internet based upon the connection speed provided by your ISP. Other advantages can be had however, and I advise you review the webpage http://www.apple.com/airport for more information.

  • AC1600 Slow Wired And Wireless Speed

    Hello,
I just purchase a smart WiFi router model AC1600. The speed off my router is 3 times as slow as what is coming from my MTA from the cable company. I reinstall my firmware and rebooted it several times, but the best I can get is 6 Mbps downstream while I am getting between 22-30 Mbps downstream off my cable MTA without the router. I love the security the AC1600 provide and would love to keep it, but I hate my speed I am getting from it...any advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

  • High speed and Low Speed CAN

    Hi
This is my first time to use CAN.
I have LabVIEW  2010 and  LabVIEW FPGA
I have NI 3110 Dual-Core Industrial Controller with Windows OS, NI 9157, NI 9852 CAN Low Speed Module and NI 9853 CAN High Speed Module to be used to monitor the CAN messages from an ECU unit.
The connection is done as the following:
    ·         The High speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9853 (Port 0)
    ·         The low speed CAN is connected to the NI-CAN 9852 (Port 0)
    ·         The baud rate of the 9853 is 500kbps
    ·         The baud rate of the 9852 is 50kbps
    ·         Both modules are set to “Listen Only”
    ·         “Module Clock” in both modules is set to 20MHz
    ·         CAN networks are 29-bit and 11-bit.
My consideration is to read all the messages from both modules without losing any message. Below is a picture from the block diagram on the FPGA target, is this the best way to read CAN messages from both modules? Also, could you please suggest what is the best way to read the messages on Host vi?
Unfortunately, I do not have the module right now to do some test, so that I cannot get the iteration time (“CAN Low Speed Loop” and “CAN High Speed Loop” show in the picture below), could you please tell how to calculate the iteration time needed for each loop depending on the above information.

The way that you have proposed to use the CAN module to monitor the BUS is a bad idea.  We have a prebuilt driver that will do most of this work for you.  You will need to download and install the NI-CAN 2.7.3 and then you will be able to use the example finder.  In the example finder look for.
The example finder is accessed through the Help menu.

  • Port speed and Wan speed

While reading Cisco documentation, router have a specific WAN speed up to 21 Mbps etc or more depending on router. You also see port speeds of 100Mbps or 1Gbps, but why are Wan speeds limited to far less on most Cisco routers.

If a router can support, for example, 21 Mbps, you don't want to have an interface of only 10 Mbps and you'll find router with 100 Mbps interface.
Same goes with routers that can support, for example, 125 Mbps.  The routers will come with 1 Gbps interface instead of 100 Mbps interface.

  • Mem speed and board speed confusion

Hi guys  I have internet now
Thinking of upgading now to a Q6600 a MSI P35 Platinum
The board supports a bus speed 0f 1333 but only supports ram speeds of 6400&5300
I wanted to use some 8500(1066) but not sure if it's supported?
    What gives?

I'm a complete noob in this field
Assuming I'll go for a Q6600 and the P35 Platinum and OC
What speed of memory would be acceptable?
Is it still best for a 1:1 or is a divider acceptable now?
    Would 6400 OC to 8500?
Or should I get some 1333 and run in single channel?
I presume dual channel is still the way to go?
I will be going for 4GB.
Was looking at OCZ Reaper 8000/8500 but if 6400 would do the job......
I'm so far behind on OC'ing it's scary

As long as the profiles are different (ex. HID vs AD2P) you will not have any issues. But say if you try to use 2 keyboards at once, it won't work. Or 2 headsets at once. Your scenario seems fine.

  • Log In Error and Poor Wireless Speed

    Hello Forum Members,
I just picked up a EA6500 wireless router today and I am a bit disappointed. I paid $199 for this router because I was hoping to take advantage of of fast N speeds and the advanced features it offers.
When I first logged in to set up the router, I saw an amber exclamation point with a note that read "Updating Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Service". When I put my password in I was met with a "Unexpected Error" message.
    Any idea what that means?
Any idea how to fix it?
Also, the firmware updater doesn't work.
Minor issues but I would hope these could be resolved. Now on to the more bothersome issue. Wireless speed is poor. I replaced a WRT160NL router with this one. On my old router using WPA2-Personal (AES) I would see speeds of ~300 Mbps. On my EA6500, I see 120 Mbps. I have checked and double checked all wireless and security settings and don't see anything that looks wrong.
Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to resolve?
    Thanks,
    garrman

    Hi Jibjib,
To say I have cascaded the EA6500 into another router would be inaccurate. I have the VDSL line coming into a 2Wire gateway. I decided not to use the wireless built into the 2Wire because it is wireless G only. The 2Wire gateway is handling the DHCP function. I have disabled the DHCP in the EA6500 so it acts like a switch for wired connections and a wireless access point.
Here is a link to my set up http://www.sbbala.com/uverse/  I used methos 2.
As mentioned above, I had a WRT160NL set up in the exact same configuration and it worked great delivering ~300 Mbps to the next room.
I'm not using the EA6500 in bridge mode as that's not what I am looking to do.
I don't think you would call what I'm doing LAN to LAN. I'm not creating a separate wireless network but rather a wireless access point.
The only changes I made from the stock configuration is to set the EA6500 ip address to 192.168.1.252, renamed both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz wireless bands and apply WPA2 security. Lastly, I disabled DHCP on the EA6500.
Not sure why this would work on a WRT160NL and not on the EA6500.
Open the first link provided by jlbjlb or click List of common issues with Linksys Wi-Fi and Smart Wi-Fi Routers. I am sure that with that particular link, you can find the information and or suggestions helpful in resolving the type of issue you are having with the router.

This is a new issue on an old setup. The mac was recently upgraded to maverick. thanks
Say no more.. upgrading to Mavericks.. any upgrade install is prone to issues.. the Mavericks one is the worst of any recent upgrades.
Lets just try and isolate the problem.
In the setup of the AE, give different names to the two wireless bands.. so go into the airport utility.. click the AE, Click edit.. click the wireless tab.. and now type in a new name.
    Try AE24ghz
Then click the wireless options and change the name for the 5ghz..
    Make it AE5ghz
    Then update the AE.
In the computer.. select either band.. and see if your other clients are affected if they use the band that the Mac is not using.
Alternatively turn off wireless in the macbook and use ethernet.. oh please please have a Mac with an ethernet port.. otherwise buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.. it is well worth having. wireless is never to be trusted.

  • New to BT, Speed and Stability Issues

    Hiya,
I've been on BT Unlimited Broadband for just over 2 weeks now. I have a few problems, it seems:
    1. Gigabit port just doesn't seem to work. I've searched this one and I do have a HH3 Type A. It works on the occasional restart, but then stops...
    2. I keep ending up with absolutely unusable speed. I've had speedtest results as low as 0.69 to 0.07 mbps (at this point the BT one won't even work as it's too slow). As soon as I reset my HH everything goes back to 'normal' at 10-12mbps.  This happens once a day on weekends (I'm at home more though) and maybe every couple days during the week.
    3. I'm just generally finding the broadband 'flakey'.  High pings, latency in gaming, sudden lag... I'm not convinced my stats look great and my profile seems to be dropping (at best it was over 16mb, I've seen it down to 10).  Unfortunately I had to reset my router earlier today as the Internet wasn't usable, at that point I'd had about 23 hours of connectivity (not a manual reset) and my HEC and CRC numbers were up to about 15 million... Here's my stats after an hour and a half.  Does this look normal or a cause for concern? I've not got a telephone to do a line test, but I'll see if I can get one in the next day or so if need be.

To my knowledge I have only a master socket in this flat where the router is connected via a new filter (though it's an old style socket with a BT logo top-left and a solid one-piece faceplace). I've checked wired and wireless, etc with same results.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your advice.  I did the line test with a corded phone and it seemed OK. No loud crackling or anything, maybe a bit of a faint hum, but nothing noteworthy.  It dawned on me that I hadn't tried swapping out the filter and having done that the speed has gone up and the errors have gone down.
BT have also agreed to swap out my HomeHub for a Type B to fix the Gigabit issue.
Could I ask, what do you think of these results now?  The other thing is... it's switched to Interleaved mode from Fast I noticed.  Are there any consequences or anything I need to do since it seems I spent my whole first 10 days using a duff filter?  Will it have any lasting effects on my profile/speed?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Wireless speed dropping to 5.5Mbps

    Hi Folks,
I like the ArchLinux distribution and have enjoyed it for a few years now.
But recently I noticed my wifi speed dropping like crazy, I reinstalled my router (DD-WRT) but that didn't fix anything.
So I tried something else, I booted to Windows and I found that I had normal speeds (54Mbps) during the span of an hour.
Afterwards I rebooted back to linux, and the speed immediately dropped to 5.5Mbps
This started about 1 or 2 weeks back, I'm guessing after some pacman update..
Are there any regression or new bugs known which affect my performance?

The solution which is working for me is the following.
    Create the following file:
    /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf
And put the following in it:
    options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=0
Of course the file name in modprobe.d can be different but must end with .conf
