Gimp and X11

The download always tells you that it requires X11 and that you shouldn't download the one from the site. So I go on to my OSX Tiger disk and realize that the package is X11SDK.pkg, and everything I keep reading says you need X11User.pkg. I've looked everywhere for it on my own and am now going to ask for some help. Does anyone have any information on this type of problem.

I finally found something that helped. I;m sorry for the post.

  • Using GIMP and X11

I originally posted this elsewhere in discussions; however this may be a better placement for it.
I use GIMP which requires X11 and recently it has stopped working. I rolled back to an older version of GIMP, installed the Xll upgrade on the Leopard DVD but all to no avail. Right now, GIMP crashes and X11 won't even start when I double click from the applications/utilities folder.
Thanks in advance for any help that any may provide.

Did this coincide with any other changes? (e.g. OS update, software changes...)

So which versions have you tried? Which package are you using? (There are various pre-packaged versions of GIMP for OS X from different groups.)

So which version of X11 were you using before if not the one from the DVD? There may be updates to this version available from Apple. Is it possible you actually installed the DVD version over the top of a later version? /Library/Receipts may show packages installed for X11 if they were separate packages and not part of more general updates.
Right now, GIMP crashes and X11 won't even start when I double click from the applications/utilities folder.
The former is expected given the latter. What exactly happens when you try to open X11? Do you see any useful messages in the log files? (Look at system.log and console.log using /Applications/Utilities/Console and/or open X11 from Terminal and see what error messages you get.)

  • Gimp and x11 driving me crazy

    Hi,
I have an iBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.6
I have installed the whole xcodes package per instructions from Apple support from the Tiger Installation disk and have tried to run Gimp 2.2.1 and gotten an error code that says I need X11 which I thought installed with the xcode.
The installed components are in my devloper folder and when I double click Xcode it opens up but no go with Gimp. I have searched the forums and evenn tried some of the suggestions but nothing. All I wanted was a graphics app that was affordable and somewhat easy to use.
Please help the super newbie who does not know the first thing about dev tools.
    Thanx.

    Wade,
    You're brilliant--it worked!
I started it up and X11 starts up with a terminal window (is that normal?)
Gimp went through installation process and looks like it is functioning--yahoo!
Now, one more question--do i need that whole xcodetools.mpkg file too since I now have the X11 app or all they are all working in conjunction with eacother?
I have a small HD so any programs or utilities I don't need I would like to get rid of.
    Thanks again!

  • X11 troubles with gimp and inkscape

    Hi everybody!
I'm using 10.5.8 with x11, i cannot find info on it
Everything was fine until i was using my terminal app and
x11 on ssh connections, running some x11 stuff like root, emacs,
    without any problem
I need to use gimp and inkscape but both downloaded, I cannot see any
    window, menu or palette
Why? Where I have to go to fix this ?
Thanks a lot to eveyone that help me fixing this

    paolo.risso wrote:

It should just work fine out of the box. Many people don't understand how X11 works on the Mac and rush over to try to replace the built-in X11 with some open-source build or bleeding edge variant. I use X11 6-9 hours a day and I've never touched a thing to configure it.
I don't know what i did but after a long time inkscape window appeared,
cpu usage and memory where fine, no heavy jobs were done but i had a lot
of troubles to gain a window working... why ?
The first time you run inkscape, it has to setup fonts and some other stuff. It takes a while.

  • X11 and X11 applications won't start

I seem to be having a problem getting the X11 application, which I installed from the 'optional installs' package on the OS X installation DVD, working. I originally posted this elsewhere, but was advised to post it here, where people familiar with X11 might be able to help.
I'll just quote what I posted elsewhere below, and hopefully someone can help.
I seem to be having a problem with the X11 utility, which I installed off of the OS X DVD (from the 'optional installs' package), and a problem with The Gimp, both of which i think are probably related.
Well I installed The Gimp a while ago, aswell as the X11 program, and both worked fine (you probably already know that The Gimp needs X11 to run). But at some point, it suddenly stopped working. I think it may have been after an update, but I really can't remember.
The problem I was having with The Gimp is that it would go to start up, but just after the X11 icon appeared in the dock, the cursor would change to an X for a few seconds. The splash screen would come up, but it didn't even appear to have a background or progress bar or anything, and didn't do anything.
At that point, just running X11 on it's own, or OpenOffice.org worked fine.
Well recently, i've tried to run The Gimp again, and something different happens. The X11 icon comes up and starts bouncing in the dock, but after a few seconds, it closes again, and The Gimp tells me that it needs X11 to run (which I already have of course).
When I try to run X11 on it's own, the same thing happens. The icon comes up in the dock, starts bouncing, then goes again.
I've used the Console program in the Utilities folder, and both times, for both problems (when The Gimp had the funny splash screen and wouldn't start, when it wouldn't start up at all, and when X11 wouldn't start), I get the same few lines which might help, these are below:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 1280x1024 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
    Quitting XDarwin...
So now, I have The Gimp that doesn't work, X11 that doesn't work, and OpenOffice.org doesn't work either (same problem where X11 quits), which is rather annoying, since I could do with using The Gimp.
I hope that explains my problem a bit, and I hope someone can help me sort it out. Thanks in advance for any help
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.33 GHz Power PC G4, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD

I have a similar problem that I described in a different forum, but was referred to this one and hope that someone can give me clue.
    My original message was:
    Hello,
Brandnew here and new to the Mac environment (former Windows user), so excuse for anything dumb as it may follow.
Wanting to install GIS software (Grass GIS) it appears to require X11 application. Found the refence in Machelp to the topic on the Apple site. However, it doesn't provide a link to the actual software, just states it is on the Install disc. Indeed, there is a package on the install disk (under Xcode Tools/Packages) called X11SDK.pkg. I thought that this might be the required app, but after installation of the Xcode tools the Grass software still doesn't function (start-up screen only and error message indicating that there is no X11 found).
Thus the question is: how do I properly install the X11 app and where do I find the software?
I hope that someone can help me out (as the AppleCare helpdesk doesn't seem to function today). Many thanks in advance.

  • OS X 10.6.4 update broke Eclipse, Gimp and Inkescape

    Hi,
after I took the latest update, the eclipse application won't start unless I invoke it from the terminal with open Eclipse.app. Here is the message:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse.
    No Java virtual machine
was found after searching the following locations:
    /Users/****/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/java
    java in your current PATH
Also, both Gimp and Inkscape won't start, neither from terminal nor Finder. Inkscape displays the message:
    "Failed to start X11
Inkscape.app requires Apple's X11, which is freely downloadable from Apple's website for Panther (10.3.x) users and available as an optional install from the installation DVD for Tiger (10.4.x) users.
Please install X11 and restart Inkscape"
When I first installed Inkscape I never had to install X11 myself, and X11 actually seems to be installed since I can see it's icon on the Dock when it tries to launch the application, closing after a few seconds.
Does anyboady have any idea about that?
    Thanks,

What kinds of 3rd party software have you installed? Xquartz? MacPorts? Fink?
Try with a new account. It may just be preferences files and/or dotfiles.

  • GIMP and XQuartz on Mountain Lion

Just tried Gimp and had to download XQuartz, but I don't like Gimp so I removed it. Is it safe to remove XQuartz as well.
Has XQuartz replaced something else and if so what is it and can it be installed again.
I am also running Mountain Lion.
On another note, can you re-install mountain lion???
    Thanks

    Thanks William.
Removed XQuartz and will download Mountain Lion from the App Store. I thought it was already downloaded, must have installed over the internet.
    Thanks.

  • Connected characters in Photoshop, GIMP and even Notepad

    Hello!
Lately, Photoshop, GIMP and even MS Notepad connect  letters (for instance "f" and "i") in various fonts (Myriad, ...). Even  though I only operate Vista computers, this issue does not occur on  other computers.
In the screenshot below you can see Myriad Pro font and the "fi" in the text seems to be too connected. As said, occuring in GIMP and notepad, too, however, not on other machines.
This  is really crazy. Anyone had this before? Could someone help me, please? Thanks in advance,  Erich!

Solved! It's not a bug, it's a feature. GIMP on my other machine won't  do since I tried with MS standard font. HAPPY ! ! !

  • 10.5.6 and Terminal and X11

Installed 10.5.6 today and found a few quirks, especially with Terminal and X11. Anyone else run into this yet?
    1. Terminal default login shell is now tcsh instead of bash. Need to go to preferences and select /bin/bash.
    2. I am having problems launching anything that uses X11. Seems that something is now in a protected directory. If I launch X-based apps as the superuser via sudo, then everything runs. What's the fix to this?
    3. I had my bibtex library (for LaTeX publications) in $home/Library/BibDesk. However, $home/Library is now a protected directory and I can't seem to changed the permissions. What is the solution?

    eric.paterson wrote:
Thanks for the suggestion on reposting in the Unix forum.
Also, no offense, but sudo stands for "super user do," also the manpage says,
Actually su stands for switch user, which defaults to the root user if no other user is given. Otherwise su would be something like
    su nero
to allow any user to take over the account nero.
    %man sudo
sudo allows a permitted user to execute a command as the superuser or another user.....
Yes but there are things that cannot be done via sudo, but only by actually logging in as su.
For example, I recently discovered that I can read a DVD-RAM that has the main folder tagged as nobody for permissions. I could not open it with sudo, but had no problem as su.
Another time I could not delete a file using sudo but su allowed me to do so.
The differences are probably very small and not well documented, but if you do enough playing around in the terminal, you will eventually hit something that requires su, and sudo will not work.

  • Gimp and Inkscape Segfaulting [SELF SOLVED]

After today, probably from an update, both GIMP and Inkscape segfault.  Inkscape won't launch because of this, and GIMP cannot open SVGs or save as PNG (probably other formats too), without segfaulting and giving up (though it doesn't quit because of this.

Unlikely. Were there any upgrades to your graphic drivers recently?

  • Install openmotif and X11 on imac 11,2?

I have a 3D software package (NX) that I cannot use because it requires the installation of openmotif and x11.

  • OpenGL 2.0 and X11!

I'm trying to compile a small program I wrote in Linux in OSX using gcc and X11.
It compiles fine, but when I try to run, my program cant find the opengl 2.0 extensions... (my little program is a test to write GLSL shaders)
Does that mean that OSX X11 opengl implementation doesnt support opengl 2.0?
    or am I missign something?
I know I could compile using the standard opengl framework, but I would like to maintain the compatibility of the source code beetwen OSX and Linux... standard gcc/opengl code...

It seems that OpenGL 2.0 is not supported, but if what you are looking for is a specific OpenGL extension you might want to check the output of glxinfo:

  • X11 and X11 applications (Eagle, OpenOffice, Gimp) won't open

I am on a macbook, running 10.4.6, and I installed X11 from my Tiger install DVD, just like I did on my G5. X11 won't start, it pops up in the dock, and bounces for a few seconds, and that's it. It goes back down. Help would be greatly appriciated.
    -Kabren

Just as a reminder, Apple recommends you never attempt to install a version of MacOS X any older than that your system originally shipped with.
There are usually various device drivers and such that are needed to support your machine that won't be present on a general case OS install disc, unless the OS disc is newer than the version your machine shipped with.
So, for example, using a generic Tiger disc likely won't work on a MacBook Pro, but a generic Leopard disc, when MacOS X 10.5 is released, will.
