Gimp VS Gimpshop?

I am learning how to do photo editing and I am not gonna buy photoshop so please do not tell me to buy it but
so should I use Gimp or Gimpshop?
I have to learn an interface anyway so I figured I should use Gimpshop so that if I needed to I would be able to use photoshop
so would learning Gimpshop pretty much teach me how to use photoshop?
and is it worth it? because some people say it's buggy and this or that
or should I just stick with Gimp?
thanks for your help in advance

As my last sentence suggests it may be worth your time to dig deep and go for Photoshop as it provides more for you. The more a program offers the deeper the learning curve.
So yes you could get along with any editor, but how much time learning that program cpu have been put to learning Photoshop.
Sooner or later the easier program will fall short. It is just a matter of when.
So really the only one that can answer how's much time and money you are will to spend is you.

  • Using Gimp or Gimpshop

Hi, I recently installed Mac Box Set with version OSX 10.6.5 on my Macbook Pro. Since then I cannot use My Photoshop 7.0 anymore. From other topics I learned that I was not the only and I had to install the free X11 and Gimp. Problem is that this is complete different and I don't know how it works and I cannot find users instructions. So I also installed Gimpshop because this should be more users friendly. But this refuses to open and crashes immediately. Can somebody help me with an easy and clear users manual for using Gimp and how can I solve the problem with Gimpshop ? Thanks for all help !

Agreed Gimp/Gimpshop has nothing to do with Photoshop other than the fact they are both photo editors.
"Gimpshop" has not been supported since OS X 10.4 the last stable release May 17, 2006.
You can read more of what Scott Moschella has to say here: http://ask.metafilter.com/144788/What-are-my-intellectual-property-rights-here
You can reference this site for *Snow Leopard* for workaround with Gimpshop. http://www.strayprocess.com/blog/gimpshop-snow-leopard
You will need to install X11 for Gimp... X11 is installed in the Applications folder. If not, to install X11 insert the Mac OS X installation disc and double-click the Optional Installs package. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8568.html
    Hope this solves your problem.

Not sure why typing 'gimp' is bringing up 'gimpshop', but anyhoo...
I just punched in 'http://mirrors.easynews.com/linux/archl … po/os/i686' into Epiphany and it 404's, so I'd assume it's down at the mo. Meantime, if you go into your mirrorlist and uncomment whichever 'Server = *' is closest to you (you could just do any of them, but the nearest ones will give you better performance) and comment out that bottom line.
All going to plan, that should sort it.

  • Help with Gimpshop crashing please

I need help getting Gimpshop to work on my macbook pro.
Please see this archived topic, which completely describes what is happening for me:
    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CB0QFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdi scussions.apple.com%2Fmessage.jspa%3FmessageID%3D9894235&ei=3eYTTeHDDc79nAfs1Onl DQ&usg=AFQjCNGDNqMWMJu8cJFU2SNYldW70pTN2g
The solution proposed there, of using Gimp rather than Gimpshop, is not one I'm interested. I used Photoshop for so many years, and after moving away from them because I could no longer afford them, I tried Gimp several times. But the user interface is just so different from Photoshop I could never make a go of it.
So you can understand my joy when I discovered a version of Gimp called Gimpshop.
So...has ANYONE out there come up with a way to solve the installation crash I'm experiencing? Again, pls click the link above which is exactly what I experience.
I have just yesterday done a full software update so I know my Snow Leopard is all up to date.
    Many thanks!

  • 10.4.4 Breaks Gimp.app

I upgraded to OS 10.4.4 this week and it seems to have broken the X Windows image manipulation program Gimp.app (v. 2.2.8, the latest, as well as 2.2.6). Gimp won't launch at all, although X11 seems to be unaffected.
The launch-progress window for Gimp shows up on screen, but remains blank. It makes no difference whether X11 is up and running first, or I simply double-click the Gimp.app icon to get both X11 and Gimp going.
Digging inside the system.log and Activity Monitor process inspector suggested a font conflict. Extract from system.log:
    Jan 13 21:12:22 RCs-G4 kernel[0]: HFS: /rsrc paths are deprecated (fonts.cache-1/rsrc)
    Jan 13 21:12:22 RCs-G4 kernel[0]: HFS: /rsrc paths are deprecated (fonts.cache-1/rsrc)
    Jan 13 21:12:23 RCs-G4 kernel[0]: HFS: /rsrc paths are deprecated (HelveLTMM/rsrc)
    Jan 13 21:12:23 RCs-G4 kernel[0]: HFS: /rsrc paths are deprecated (Helvetica LT MM/rsrc)
Indeed, the release notes to OS 10.4.4 confirm that updated fontbooks for Courier and Monaco are installed in /System/Library/Fonts. However, replacing these with the older versions and cleaning font caches with Font Finagler did not remedy the problem. Gimp.app still will not launch.
No word from SourceForge.net on this, but I have made a post:
    https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1404179&group_id=10477 4&atid=639246
Gimp.app 2.2.8 and 2.2.6 both work fine in OS 10.4.3, which I still have installed on an external volume.
PowerMac G4 Dual 500 MHz Gigabit Ethernet   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Same here. I tried both Gimp and Gimpshop and neither will launch. Here's the Console record when I double click the Gimp app:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 2624x1024 @ (-1024,0)
    Screen 0 placed at X11 coordinate (0,0).
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
bash: no job control in this shell
I have no idea what this means, but someone might.
    Francine
    Schwieder
PS--I tried Gimp again with Activity Monitor open and X11 running, went to get a glass of orange juice, selected gimp-2.2 in Acitivity Monitor (it was using 99% of the CPU), clicked the Inspect button to see if I could tell which file it was at when it choked, and suddenly the program finished with the blank window and its normal palettes appeared! I then opened a recent document, and there seemed to be no problem. Hmm. I then quit it, and relaunced--it opened completely normally!

  • So basically have a power pc g4 and i am wondering how to i upgrade it from os x 10.4.11 to os x 10.9.1?

maybe some older games if you can find them, like Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Oni, or Lugaru.

you might be able to find free demo versions to download to see how well a particular game will work with your system.
You could also find some games for younger kids, like Freddi Fish, SpyFox, PuttPutt, Pajama Sam, or Backyard Sports.  Those were for Mac OS 9, but should work in Classic emulation, if you still have an OS 9 System Folder on your PPC.  Or an older version of Mavis Beacon or SpongeBob Typing to teach a kid to type.  Jumpstart series software for pre-K grade-level games, etc...  KidPix for drawing.
If you want to do some photo editing and don't want to shell out the cash for Photoshop, try GIMP or GIMPshop.  For school work, instead of Microsoft Office, you can use OpenOffice.  There are many GNU-Linux opensource packages you can install using fink or DarwinPorts package managers, learn to code and write your own softare, with XCode and developer tools.

  • Upgrade Paths from OWB 9, 10 and 11 to OWB 11gR2

    Hi,
There is a new whitepaper on upgrade and migration paths for existing projects, including moving just your designs or moving everything including runtime audit metadata. You can find a link to it here:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/warehousebuilder/2010/03/owb_11gr2_migration_and_upgrade_paths_from_previous_versions.html
It will be added to the main OWB OTN page shortly.

  • Looking for graphics program

OK, not sure if this is the right forum, but I couldn't find a better spot.
I'm looking for recommendations for a good middle of the road graphics program for my Mac. On my PC I used Paint Shop Pro. Photoshop is expensive and way too powerful. I'm looking to edit picutres and design some website grade graphics.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There are many graphics applications available. Preview can do some elementary image editing. iPhoto can do more. For more advanced image editing, here is a list of six, off the top of my head; I am sure there are more:
    Gimp - Needs X11.
Gimpshop - Gimp variant. It's supposed to be more Photoshop-like. Needs X11.
    http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294
Seashore - Open source Cocoa. Partially based on Gimp, but not X11.
    http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
Graphic Converter - Shareware, worth many times its price. It is not the most powerful image editor in this list, but it does much more. Its real forte is opening any graphic format you are ever likely to encounter, and many, many more. Anybody who works with image files should have a copy.
Color It! - Comparable to Photoshop elements in features, but cheaper, and much faster.
Photoshop Elements - Much cheaper than Photoshop, but more than enough for most non-professionals.
Gimp and Gimpshop use X11, which makes them rather un-Mac-like, but they are free. I have not really used any of the free ones, since I already have the other three. If I needed a free app, Seashore is the one I would try. Graphic Converter and Color It! are my favorites. Photoshop Elements is probably the most powerful.

  • Using digitalised negatives in iPhoto

Can I use software on the MacBook Pro to turn colour negatives to positives?

Off the top of the head, I know that iPhoto (commonly used to move photos to and fro the system) does not incorporate such a filter, pretty sure there must be a GIMP filter to do so. GIMP is the free/open source program that gives you near-Photoshop functionality. Just be sure to download the build that corresponds to your OS X version.
    http://www.gimp.org
Gimpshop is a blatant and unethical GIMP ripoff.

  • Using Gimpshop - the application gimp-2.2 quit unexpectedly

    Hi there,
When I try to open the gimp.app program, first a window pops up that says "caching fonts" and another window with a header 'xterm' comes up and in the xterm window it says "bash-3.2$".
After a minute or so, the "the application gimp-2.2 quit unexpectedly" message appears.
X11 seems to be running when all this happens although I don't know what X11 is or does.
    Hope someone can help

I had the exact same problem with gimpshop and os 10.5.7
I just downloaded the latest version today for the first time. any suggestions?

  • From Photoshop to Gimp

Having worked as a web-designer for 6 months using Photoshop, I spend last weekend exploring the possibilities of GIMP convincing myself that I could master it with minimal effort.
    How wrong I was...
The GIMP interface, although nice, was just WAY too different for me.  Now, I'm not a serious graphics designer (anymore), and all i really want to do is make some cool buttons/wallpapers/etc to spruce up my AL and show it off in the 'monthly screenshots' post.  8) But the things that got me stuck were:
    1.  The hotkeys (which I use a LOT!!) are so completely different.
    2.  The names given to tools/effects/commands are all different.
    3.  The windowing interface.  What's the justification behind having so many windows scattered across the desktop?  I hate it.  With Photoshop it's one main window.  In Gimp, you mis-click and you're either in another application or you've clicked on the desktop.  Either way, you lose the hotkeys.  Very annoying!
Thankfully, just today, I came across a bit of help to tackle two of the problems above!
To tackle the issue of hotkeys, I'd recommend this site below.  it contains a remapping of all tools as per what they are in photoshop:
    http://epierce.freeshell.org/gimp/gimp_ps.php
For the tools/effects/commands you can use GimpShop, which is VERY nice indeed! Check it out at:
    http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241
(somewhere down the bottom of the page someone's even provided an ArchLinux pagakage!)
Now, the only issue remaining is the scattered-window-interface.  Argh!!  Putting that aside, I'm LOVING my Gimp now!  I wish I had the patience to learn Gimp the Giimp way, but as I said, I don't want to dwelve too deep into it.  I just want to get my ideas on screen without forking out $1000 AUD
Anyways, enough rambling.  My icons look ugly.  It's design time!!

    I see multiple windows there.....
No... there's no problems with the interface design in the gimp. IMHO, it's superior. MDI based applications are the spawn of the devil.
    iphitus
    Hi iphitus,
I'm not sure about the apple screenshot you posted - but with the windows MDI interafce, say you clicked in the grey-background of the main window by mistake.  now, say you wanted to use the 'rectangular-select tool'.  You press 'M' in photoshop, and you're free to use that tool in any image window inside the MDI interface.
And you're free to use the tool in any of the gimp's images.
Now in Gimp there is no MDI interface.   So say you click on the background by mistake.  Then you hit 'R' (which is the Gimp version of the 'M' key from above).  Nothing happens.  Why? Coz you've lost focus to the application by clicking on the desktop (or some other window).
Well that's partially because you use a broken window manager, but really, it's not that bad, i know clicking the desktop by accident has never been an issue for me.
Solution: Go into GIMP, Preferences, Window Management, Set Hint for toolbox:  'Keep Above'.
Then maximize the image you work with and your gimp toolbox will be on top the whole time.
If you find the toolbox too big and space consuming, go to Preferences, theme, and select small.
What I'm getting at is application focus.  Why should I have to alt-tab to get to windows that are part of the same application?  It doesn't make sense to me ...
Inside Photoshop, you still have to change windows somehow. Probably using it's own keyboard combination, or the mouse. I'm betting you just use the mouse.
Whereas in the GIMP, you may use a standard keyboard combination, standard across the whole desktop. Not custom for each application, one to learn rather than ten. Or you may use the mouse, which is what I suspect you already use in Photoshop.
MDI vs SDI has been debated to death, take a google, you'll realise how flawed that MDI is. Which is why Microsoft is moving away from it, and Apple never used it in the first place.
Me, I'm a GIMP user who then went to Photoshop for school. And I find photoshop ridiculously frustrating to deal with. the windows within photoshop arent managed by the window manager, hence alt-tab and other standard forms of navigation fail to work.
I'm also used to the focus following my mouse around within linux, I dont have to click a window to use it, and it becomes annoying when that window I mouse over doesnt pop up as I would expect it to. While focus following the mouse is afaik non existant in windows, if they implemented MDI in Gimp, that would break the Gimp for me.
And if it's that bad.... Gimp is open source, write your own GTK MDI widget, enjoy the flames you'll receive, and you can have your own MDI Gimp.

  • Using x11 and Gimp

I started to download Gimp and was given a message that I needed to install x11. I have a MacBook Pro with v 10.4.11. When I tried to install x11 a message popped up that I had a newer version on my computer. What version do I need to install and how do I go about it to get Gimp to work?
    Thank you for any help
    Mark

Sorry to digress from the OP question...

But only the newest developer version of X11 seems to work with tablets and Gimp. And that version is only for the very newest update of Leopard. Anyone know if there will be a X11 compatible with OSX 10.4 regarding the tablet functionality?...
Well, that is not entirely correct. I am using a Graphire4 Wacom tablet and the basic mouse/pen functionality works in X11 (GIMP, GIMPshop) for pointing, clicking, drawing, etc. The main (essential) feature that is not supported in 10.4.11 version of X11 is pressure sensitivity. There are some linux drivers that support pressure sensitivity, but I think the X11 version in 10.4 still won't support it. (You might be able to find some open-source version of X11 as an alternative and compile and build it yourself if you are a developer) If anyone is aware of an update to X11 available for 10.4 that works with pressure sensitivity, please correct me if I am wrong. (Of course the pressure sensitivity works with the bundled tablet software Photoshop Elements and Corel Painter Essentials, so you can always make some layers/masks with the pen tablet using that software and then export those to your GIMP project to add more effects or to the use the tools that are missing from the bundled software)
Has pressure sensitivity support been introduced to X11 in 10.5, or is that still in development?

  • Why my addons and dictionaries has been removed or disabled after installing GimpShop?

    Hey there
I tired to install GimpShop, which suppose to be already customised to look like a PSH version of Gimp. However the installer makes some funny business and all the crapware possible: toolbars, addons etc. I stopped the installation and removed the crapware using AdwCleaner, SpyBot 2.0 and Eset Online Scanner. However, my dictionaries, add-ons in both Firefox and Gimp were either disabled or removed.
    So, here are my questions:
    1. Why where they disabled or removed? BTW I couldn't reactive them.
    2. Why Firefox is the only browser that installs without asking addons form freeware installers (which very often you can not uncheck their installations)? Chrome has less crap and Opera never has anything unwanted installed.
    3. Why Firefox keeps hanging up ale slowing down the system when there is only one heavy page? Or keeps freezing when Adobe Flash in YouTube constantly crashes?

<blockquote>1. Why where they disabled or removed? BTW I couldn't reactive them. </blockquote>
I am guessing it was part of the installation that was stopped/removed. Something may have been corrupted.
<blockquote>2. Why Firefox is the only browser that installs without asking addons form freeware installers (which very often you can not uncheck their installations)? Chrome has less crap and Opera never has anything unwanted installed.</blockquote>
It is possible to disable xpi files with these instructions: [http://www.itsupportguides.com/windows-7/firefox-10-how-to-disable-addon-plugin-installation/]
<blockquote>3. Why Firefox keeps hanging up ale slowing down the system when there is only one heavy page? Or keeps freezing when Adobe Flash in YouTube constantly crashes? </blockquote>
It is possible to prevent Flash from crashing or hanging again with these troubleshooting tips:

  • Upgrading GIMP in Solaris 10

I would like to upgrade GIMP in Solaris 10 to the version used in Solaris Express DE.
What is the best way to do this?

i didnt however i wasnt hammering it. if the load was expected to be high i would have done the io layout diff (try and follow some of oracles ideas: SAME for one, if possible).
some depends on the load and the load from the other zones. you can use allocate resource limits to give more priority to more important zones or make sure you have enough resources to start. what type of load are you expecting?

  • [SOLVED] Xorg crashes when I open OpenOffice and Gimp

Hello. I recently did a system upgrade, and then I tried unsuccessfully to install the printer drivers with hplip. the fact is that after these two steps (don't know what the cause of the two, but then I have removed hplip the dependencies) when I open OpenOffice (or LibreOffice, even doing the downgrade to OOo 3.2.1 does not start right) and Gimp Xorg crashes, and pixels are mixed, making the system unusable (i have to give ctrl-alt-canc).
