Gingerbread Bricked my Droid X

Yesterday I downloaded and installed the Gingerbread update but something is wrong. The phone wont turn on nor will it boot to the factory reset menu. The red M randomly pops up but then it goes away again, any advise

Did the phone actually WORK at some point after you installed it?  Did it have sufficient power - e.g., plugged in to wall charger during update? did you let it wait long enough during the install? Reason I ask is there is a long "pause" on the red MOTO logo during the install. If you interrupted that, all bets are off.
Are you using THESE procedures to get to the Power-up MENU ?  If so, from there you can try the Factory Wipe & Reset. Else time to go to the Verizon store and have them reset it.
Power Device Off First.....
1. Hold Home Button and press power
2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick
3. Let Go of Home Button and Power
4. Press BOTH up & down volume buttons at same time
5. A blue menu will show at top of page, using volume control buttons, scroll to Format Device and press the Power button to select
6. Select Yes to verify
7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)
8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot
Note: Use volume up and down to select menu otion and use Power button as Enter

  • Verizon employee installs Froyo, bricks my droid

Verizon sent me the text saying that the new 2.2 "Froyo" OS was out and ready for download.   Of course my DroidX would not download it over the air (OTA).  It would search, but never initiate the download.   So I took it to the verizon store to let one of their reps have a go at it.    She spent an hour with it before finally finding a way to get it to download OTA.   Why she couldn't get it to happen over their wifi right there in their store is beyond me.   She told me it would take about a half hour to download, and it did.   Rather than wait I went home.   It finished downloading and prompted me to install.  I started the install, it rebooted my phone, and it would not work.   It would disply the screen as it was before, but trying to start a text wold just display a black screen.   Couldn't make any calls either....the phone would just lock up.
So back to the store I go.  I wanted to make two trips and spend hours because the official "upgrade" launch was buggy.
I got the same tech.  She spent about a half hour with the phone and finally told me that it was bricked and would have to be restored to factory defaults and then the updated reinstalled.   I told her that was fine, I just wanted to be sure my stuff was all backed up.  I know the general backup on the myverizon site is more or less just the contacts.   She assured me it would backup the pics and contacts and other relevant info to the SD card.    Riiiiiight.      So she restored to factory default and did an install I guess.  All I know is that I stood around for another hour or so.
She finally tells me I'm good to go.   She hands my phone me.  Looks different....of course, it was a vigin screen as they come new.  She shows me that my contacts and pictures are still there.  They are.   I check my texts, and there's NOTHING.   I ask where all the dialog went.   She tells me that it must be lost.    Hell, I thought that when she told me everything would be backed up, it would mean that after restoring to factory defaults those pertinent bits of info would then be restored.    For anyone that has anything important in their text dialogs, be aware, you may lose ALL of that information.
Granted I lost ALL my apps, all my customizations that have taken place over the past months, but losing ALL texting dialog as well.   What a steaming pile of disappointment!
And all of this after the "upgrade" to the new 2.2 OS?    Wow, I should've just stayed with what was working.     Verizon's new transition to a "better" operating system really blows.

I am sorry to inform you but if device was bricked the device would have been totally unusable. This also wasnt a OS upgrade issue, its more like a unknowledgable tech information because this isnt a common issue when doing updated but a hard reset is a wise thing to do before updating OS anyway. In the end you lost everything because a hard rest was done not because od update.
Now you may want to invest $3.00 for  MyBackup from market to back up information because Google only backup Contacts and bought apps, all other information will be lost on a hard rest,
Wildman, are you saying one should do a hard reset before updating to a newer firmware? If this is the case I did not do this when I updated from 2.1 to 2.2.340 and have no issues. Am I just lucky?
It's a good idea to hard reset before an update.  This sets all the variables to the same as the devices that the new update was tested on.  Sure, you could still run into issues, but it removes some of the possibilities.
Thank you for clearifing that for me, crb79 is exactly right, I sugeest doing it because of the level of changes that OS upgrades usually do, they modify a number of key ssytem files that preinstalled apps either wasnt test with or understands how to handle the changes... If you reset first you will be updating on top of the same image that the developers test the software on so this usually minimizes issues after updates.

What is the best app to backup everything? Won't a hard reset make my phone like it was out of the box?
Try MyBackup Pro, it works well for me but I suggest to only backup top six options because all other includes system files that should not be restored because can cause issues and Google Restores the rest..  You can backup everything but only restore these file WITHOUT CONTACTS because Google places them on phone and restoring with app will cause double contacts...

I was just on the HTC Droid Incredible Support Forum page, and there is a post there regarding the Gingerbread update for Droid Incredible.  An HTC rep sent a response to a DInc user that said there will be NO GINGERBREAD UPDATE FOR THE DROID INCREDIBLE.
I'm trying to decide if I'm surprised or not at HTC's decision.  I'm leaning toward *not*...

  • Calendar reminders (notifications) still NOT working, even after 602 update.....

So, Verizon Wireless released the 602 update to the Gingerbread OS for the Droid X, and the calendar reminder popups (notifications) are still NOT working properly.
This is VERY frustrating, as I use these notifications (reminder pop ups) for everything from business related (meetings, etc) to personal (when to take medicines, etc).
It's also VERY frustrating because BEFORE Gingerbread, when the Droid X ran Froyo, there was NOT a problem with the calendar and its reminders.
I would assume that there are MANY, MANY people being affected by this issue...and I wonder why Verizon hasn't "put the heat" on Google to FIX this issue which is clearly related to the Android OS, more specifically, Gingerbread.
I used to like the Droid X very much, but now I'm counting the days until I can get an iPhone.  At least you know what you're getting, and won't have an update "break" functions of the phone.
So, Verizon, if you're listening... PLEASE get this calendar notification problem FIXED.
    Thank you!!

I'm the original poster of this topic.  And let me tell you the steps that I went through to try to get this resolved, and then I'll let you know the ultimate solution that I wound up doing and am happy about (but am NOT happy about Verizon & Motorola).
    1) updated DroidX to latest 602 update.
    2) went into admin partition and deleted cache
    still did not work
    3) went into admin partition and did hard reset (complete restore) from inside the admin partition
Still did not get calendar reminders to work.
    4) went into normal phone and accessed "Restore Phone to Factory Specs" from the Privacy menu in settings.  This caused the phone to do a similar hard reset as in step 3, except it also ran the beginning software (welcome to your Droid, we now have to activate your phone, etc).
Calendar reminders did not work. (REMEMBER... when I say they did not work, I mean that the reminders would go off EVENTUALLY , but anywhere from 30mins AFTER the appointment to literally HOURS AFTER the appointment).
    5) Created a COMPLETELY NEW AND DIFFERENT calendar at Google under a DIFFERENT screen name/account.  Configured DroidX to completely forget the original calendar and to start using the NEW one.
Reminders still did NOT work properly.
    6) Once again, tried hard resets.
    NOPE.  Still did NOT work.
    7) CALLED Verizon Wireless and described my problem and they pretty much didn't/couldn't help and said they would "send a report to the engineering team" about the problem.
And HERE is the thing that REALLY BURNED ME UP about this WHOLE ENTIRE DEBACLE.....  my DroidX worked 100% correctly BEFORE the Gingerbread upgrade to the Android OS.  When it was running Froyo (previous OS), every single calendar reminder on my original calendar worked every single time, on time, every time.  BUT... AFTER Gingerbread, it just didn't work.  (Don't get me started with the phantom powering on of the phone after it was powered off problem that STILL exists after the 602 upgrade).
SO.......... what did I eventually do???   Well, by this time, I was eligible for early upgrade at upgrading pricing and switched to the iPhone4 (I didn't want the 4S).  AND YOU KNOW WHAT???  Using the ORIGINAL GOOGLE calendar that I used before all the above stuff happened, my reminders on the iPhone4 work all the time, every time.  These include appointments that I made 8 months ago to new ones that I make every day.  And for all of them, the iPhone4 sets the reminder chime off EXACTLY when I want it to.
Now, I realize that this doesn't address the problem for you, Ganamide (who wrote above), but for me, I finally got to the point where I had missed critical appointments with clients and couldn't wait around for the DroidX Calendar Reminder Problem to be resolved.
So Verizon Wireless and Motorola (maker of DroidX) and Google (maker of Android OS) all have "negative points" in my book for allowing such a problem to continue without proper resolution.   Apple, on the other hand, gets "positive points" in my book for making a product that is rock solid and works well.

  • What is the status of 2.2?

    Hello.
Does anyone have an idea? Why are we getting the run around? I'm a loyal customer and I would appreciate we get some answers ASAP!
    thanks

you think you're ignored now waiting for 2.2 for the original Droid, you'll never see 3.0. reports say the processor has to be 1 ghz or faster so no gingerbread for original droid. hey, look on the bright side, once you get flash 10.1, you'll have nothing more to wait for either moto or vzw to put you through their finger pointing process of (VZW waiting for MOTO to release update, no MOTO said they're waiting for VZW to okay release  - you can't get a straight answer from either one)
I like you am waiting for these two knuckleheads to finally give the okay and update my droid so i can at least go on the pizza hut website or hulu, or any other flash enabled site on the web as promised by their motorola adds back around Christmas time.

  • Problems with Driod 2

The Droid 2 started out to be a nice phone. The problem I'm know having is that it lags and needs to be restarted at least once a day to get my email notification. And my voice dial over Bluetooth takes forever to start (and that's when I use a Motorola Bluetooth). The answer from Motorola is pull the battery for 1 minute. That works sometimes for a half day.  Why do I need to do this? And why isn't anyone saying anything about the lack of info for Gingerbread on the Droid 2? And I don't mean the Droid 2 Global.  Will someone just come out and say its a defective phone and stop us from waiting! Less then 1 year after I got this phone its outdated. Other Motorola's have received the update.  And why would anyone want to get another Motorola phone (Droid 3)?? I wanted a keyboard, but not after the nonsupport from them.  I guess us Droid customers aren't as important as the "Iphone" customers.

oh trust me, I have the DROID 2 (not the Global) and it's T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E. I hate it and it's the worst phone I've ever had. I had the DROID Incredible and it was taken off of Verizon because it was so bad, so I got the DROID 2, but it's no better than the DROID Incredible I used to have. I don't know why, but I'm trusting the DROID 3 and I'm trying to get into getting the DROID 3 in a Certified Pre-Owned phone. I'd be much happier with that phone. Don't worry, if you're unhappy, I am on your side. I asked someone about the DROID 3, and it's a GREAT updated version of the DROID 2. Definitely go with the DROID 3 if possible. Every comment I've read about the DROID 2 was TERRIBLE, and every comment (except a few) about the DROID 3 were "AMAZING phone!!," "DROID most definitely does!!," and "GREAT phone!! I'd recommend!!"

  • Droid Bionic the most expensive Brick I've ever purchased

I just want to know when in November this update is going to happen.
This is almost worse than the gingerbread nightmare. I had a Droid2 which worked up until the Gingerbread update, then I purchase a "not-ready-for-primetime" Droid Bionic.
It took 6 months for my Xoom to become 4G, this when they said it would only be 90 days.
How long will I have to wait for my Bionic to do anything.
It's so bad that the fix to turn on airplane mode doesn't work now and half the time the phone doesn't even recognize it IS in airplane mode.
This has been this biggest Mongolian cluster ******** of a phone launch. God help those who upgrade to the RAZR with a battery that can't be removed.
I called to complain and received a refund on one month's data, but really why should I have to call on a phone that should work out of the box.
I love the phone I just want it to do what it's supposed to..
So again I ask, When can we expect the update VERIZON???
I'm just tired of the blame game, Verizon blames MOTO and then we find out some of the issues are because VERIZON wanted specific "proprietary mods" to the system...
    Please update the phone soon..

It's not going to be in the beginning like they said. It has been pushed back toward the end of November now, probably just to get pushed back again. With the Razr out (which is what Verizon is focusing on), do you think we will get the update quickly? No. We should've had it by now. In fact, we shouldn't need an update period. I'm doing playing around with customer service and not getting a solution I'm happy with. I've emailed executive relations and am hoping for a response but I'm not sure if I will get one, I left a message for someone on Wednesday and haven't heard back. I want this phone returned, period. I've got introuble twice with work now because my phone did not recieve some important calls and I almost gave my mother a heart attack (I ALWAYS pick up for her and one night she called and called and called and my phone never rang once, few hours later I notice I had a few voicemails). Customer service isn't even sending out replacements anymore. They admitted to the Bionic plague and that every phone has the same issue.
Like you, the "airplane mode fix" doesn't even work for me. I have to pop the battery and even then it doesn't always work.
I'm almost tempted to copy and paste the email I sent because Ive had a crap shoot with this phone. What really ticked me off is the fact that I was conned into getting a "free" accessory when I could've got $50 off the phone. Who wants a battery dock with two batteries. I dont want to sit there and have to switch batteries once a day.
I want to quote a Verizon executive relations rep from two years ago when I was following the Omnia 2, someone had inquired about release dates.
    Good morning Mr. X,
We are in receipt of your correspondence to Mr. Lowell McAdam concerning the release of the Samsung Omnia II.  We appreciate your enthusiasm and anticipation of the release of the new device.
While we are aware you are anxiously awaiting the launch, at this time, we cannot provide a definitive date for the release.   We do not like to set false expectations about a release date and then have to push it back, and instead only announce a release date when we get closer to the actual release.  Verizon Wireless has a responsibility to our customers and prior to the release of any device; we want to ensure the device passes our standards.  That includes superior performance on our network, our staff is fully trained, and inventory is available to meet the needs of our customers.  We'd rather wait to get the product right rather than rush out a product that causes problems.  Please check our website periodically for a news release about upcoming phone announcements.
Thank you for your feedback.  We value your opinion as well as your business.
    Sincerely,
    NE Area Executive Relations
Take note of what I bolded and underlined. Either Verizon changed their "responsibilities" in the past couple years, or they just aren't doing their job.
Will keep you guys updated. Hopefully I'll finally be able to get another phone that actually has the service that I've been paying for. I will say though if I do not hear back from the last executive relations rep I emailed, I'm filing a complaint with the FCC, the attorney general, and filing a dispute on my credit card. Maybe I won't get a new phone but with my last step I'll at least not have paid for a worthless phone.

  • Droid 2 Global Gingerbread User Guide?

Is there a User Guide available for Droid 2 Global with the GIngerbread update?
The info sheet here (http://support.verizonwireless.com/pdf/system_update/droid_2_global.pdf) shows all sorts of "enhancements" but not how to use them.  For example, how do you set up app groups, and what on earth is "Multi-Touch Key-Chording"?
The link to "Device Manual" (http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/index.html?p=5567&m=)
links to the pre-update (Android 2.2 Froyo) manual.
    Thanks!

DatGyrlVida, if the phone bugs you so much, get a different phone and pay for the change. Your rant and near flaming are not needed here. Your phone frequency problem could be anything, including the junk of apps you probably installed on the Droid interferring with the phone's operations. If you want some assistance on this forum, please describe your phone issues professionally and we can see if we can resolve it together.
And no, I do not work for VerizonWireless.
My experience with my Droid 2 Global is that I had it replaced three times under warranty due to loss of 3G connection, and a reboot could not resolve it. I since then purchased My Backup Pro app to do a complete phone backup, so if I need to replace the phone again (to my SD card or private cloud), I can reimage it. Plus, whenever I install a new app, I do a full backup beforehand so if the app corrupts my phone (or interfers with any phone operation like reception), I can do a reimage on the phone to the previous working state. Uninstalling the offending app does not necessarily remove the junk from its installation. Something for you to consider...

I am tired of laggy keyboards, no LED light for missed calls, and all the other bugs I cant think of. Gingerbread is good, but verizon and motorola you guys can make it great for this phone. Hurry up

I am glad to let you know that since 08/15/11, an update is coming out in phases for the Droid X  update for Gingerbread. This update will be pushed out in batches, so please check the device periodically by following these steps.

no... I'm not one of those people who complain that Verizon and/or Samsung is obligated to provide Gingerbread update.
I do not think they are obligated.

  • Droid X and Gingerbread

I love my Droid X but since the gingerbread upgrade it has gone downhill fast. The phone has the latest updates but app shortcuts disappear at random, apps are slow to open up, typing lags horribly and random reboots and lockups occur. Anyone else having these issues? I want my Froyo back!!! This really sucks!!

    Good morning mylilmule.
I would be upset with all the issues you listed.  Especially if it all started around the same time.  Have we done any troubleshooting?  Have you cleared the cache since the update?  Also, you can try putting the device in Safe Mode to see if this is caused by the software, or possibly a third party application.  Please try these two options.  If you're still having same problems, please send me a Private Message, and I will be happy to assist you.

  • Droid 2 Gingerbread issues

I have the Droid 2, and did the Gingerbread update in September 2011. Since then I have been having strange issues, and from what I have read online, I am in good company. And of course, prior to update my phone had none of these issues, and I have had it for over a year!  ...My poor Droid.
My main issue is my phone rebooting itself on it's own will...and at very random times. It locks itself up,goes black, and reboots.
It seems to get hung up, and then give up
It also will lock up and not allow the screen to orient itself in the correct direction.
I don't think I am getting some messages /emails /phone calls as they come in (as people have said "I just tried to call you"...etc.), or get a mysterious voicemail...when the phone never rung???
I have done a "soft reset" multiple times, but am afraid of tanking it entirely if I do a "hard reset".
I don't have a lot of junky apps on it either, and stay on top of what is running and not running. So I don't believe that is the problem.
Thankfully at least I have not had any battery issues.
Any help would be great...or I may be buying a new phone.
Opinions on the Bionic are also welcome!
    Thanks.

Well...I went to a Verizon store yesterday, and I explained to the sales associate there what was going on. Without even having tech support look at my phone she told me to download the Gingerbread keyboard(because my keyboard wasn't working), and to just lock the orientation on the screen to solve that issue. Then to top it all of...she offered to sell me home phone service...
There was no answer as to why the phone locks up and reboots at random.
Not the best experience by any means. I just said "Well I guess I'll just see what happens"...and left.
I know she was just doing her job, but it didn't really help me at all.
