Give feedback on Photos versus iPhoto

I am very unhappy with the New Photos App and will continue to use iPhoto. The new Photos App is very difficult to use. Why have Apple added this App? Is it as a result of consumer research on iPhoto?
If I hadn't just invested in a new iMac I would consider reverting to using a Windows PC so that I can use Adobe Photoshop for adjustment and organising my albums. I have over 40000 photos recording my world travels and I am truly not interested in seeing all 40000 at any one time!!
If Apple ever stop supporting iPhoto I am going to be extremely angry.

Let the developers know, which iPhoto features are important to you. I hope the next update will bring more features to Photos, that makes it more useful for very large libraries.
Use iPhoto for the time being. iPhoto 9.6.1 is working very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.
The migration let iPhoto installed and also your iPhoto Library will still work with iPhoto.
If you did not uninstall iPhoto, it will still be there in your Applications folder. And if you had updated to the latest version iPhoto 9.6.1 before you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3, you can simply drag iPhoto back to the Dock from your Applications folder and continue to use it. Double click iPhoto and confirm, that you want to open iPhoto and not Photos. It is not compulsory to use Photos, while it it still the first release. When you launch iPhoto, you will see a warning, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated to Photos, but simply click the "Open iPhoto" button.The library will still work with iPhoto. ()see: If Photos won't open a library that you already migrated - Apple Support
If your iPhoto version is not iPhoto 9.6.1, you need to update it.

The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

I have my IPhone connected to ICloud and to IPhoto on my Mac. I've been organizing photos in my IPhoto so now I'm getting a multiples back into my IPhone - even photos that I never took in the first place. What can I do to stop this?

If you're using My Photo Stream to transfer photos from your iPhone to your Mac AND from your Mac to your iPhone as well as using iPhoto with the iPhone connected to the Mac you're bound to get duplcates on the Mac and iPhone.
In iPhoto on your Mac be sure this checkbox is NOT checked in iPhoto's iCloud preference pane:
The settings above will download and import all photos taken by the iPhone into your iPhoto Library on the Mac. The phone must be connected to WiFi for the transfer to take place.

I want to take the photos off my iPhone and put them directly onto an external hard disk. I want to bypass iPhoto altogether. When I link my iPhone to my computer, it only opens in iTunes, which only gives me the option to save my photos to iPhoto. Help!

Additionally, I'd like to be able to take the 2000+ photos out of iPhoto and put them on a disk in a folder. I have managed to export them to the hard disk but it's just plonked all 2000+ photos in a list - not ideal if I want to use it for anything else. And then I have to manually delete the photos from iPhoto. Is there not a quick and easy way of dealing with this?

I too would like to be able to do this. Just put them where i want the. IFTT a scripting app will put the images in dropbox for you , but its been pretty iffy.

Delete photo from iPhoto library and HDD

Hopefully I'm not repeating a previous thread...
Not being an expert, am I correct in saying that iPhoto only changes its version of the photo when editing it?
Also, if you delete the photo by moving it to the trash can, it doesn't physically delete it from the HDD? (When you empty the trash can)
This causes a problem for a few reasons.
I have just loaded Medialink PS3 which allows the iMac to serve the PS3. (BTW - Good product)
If you point Medialink to the original HDD folder then this still includes photos I thought I had deleted.
Also If I want to burn a cd with the photo folder external to iPhoto , the "deleted" photos are also burnt.
I copied all of the photos from a windows PC, and Picasa allowed you to physically delet from its own folder as well as the HDD.
Doesn't iPhoto 09 allow this?
What would iPhoto do if I went through and cleaned up the external folder and deleted jpgs or edited using Canon editing software? If using the external editor, would iPhoto reflect the changes?

I'm not at all sure that a Referenced Library is what you want. In fact I strongly recommend against it. But however:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

iPhoto will not touch any file outside its library. Period.
It will copy files on import and leave existing files untouched,
It will delete files within the Library but not outside the Library.
When you choose to go with a Referenced Library you are deciding that You want to manage the Files. You want to import them from the camera, you want to sort them however you want and you want to delete them yourself. That's the point of a referenced Library.
I just did a test by editing a photo using Canon Professional and the changes were not reflected in iPhoto. And vise versa.
The point of iPhoto is that you interface with your Photos via the Application. Like Addressbook for your contacts, iTunes for your Music, it's the go-to app for your Photos.
So, you want to edit Photos, you go to iPhoto and use the External Editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

Here's something you can try with a copy of your current library.
1 - go to iPhoto's Events preference pane and set the auto split option to 1 day per even.
2 - go the the Events mode, select all Events.
3 - go to the Events menu and and select Autosplit Selected Events.
which will give you an event for each day.
4 - again select all events (although it might be better do to fewer at a time) and export them to your desired destination via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with the following settings:
The workflow above will produce a folder for each days photos with the date as the folder's title.

Can't find anything in the AppleScript Language Guide that will give me a clue to how to do this. (I know that the AsLG have no info on iPhoto).

You can use the filter reference form - the date property of a photo contains the time also, so you need the complete date and time to get a match:
set TheDate to date "Saturday, May 24, 2008 4:31:56 AM"

If you don't know (or care) about the time, you can expand the results by using the fact that IPhoto keeps it's photos sorted by date, so the image path of a photo contains the date:

I select photo from iPhoto,go to share:email, photo uploaded to email, type in address, click send, pop up window appears with: email did not go thru because server did not reply - now what, how do I fix?

Go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete the email account that's there. Now add it back and try again.
A more reliable method is to set Mail as the email Client for iPhoto in iPhoto's General preference pane. The Mail client is more reliable, gives you better access to your Contacts, gives you a sent copy and has photo themes similar to iPhoto's in its stationary section.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

How to change the order of photos in iPhoto on my iPad, so I can create the slide show I want.

Here's what I did to generate a slide show with Ken Burns effect on the iPad...with the exact same slide order I created on the iMac. I have iOS 5.5 and iPhoto App on New iPad, and iPhoto 11 on iMac.
In iPhoto for the Mac, create a new Album and give it the name of your Slide Show. Drag or import the photos you want into the album. Rearrange the order of the album photos as desired. Do this by selecting Manual Sort under View/Sort Photos or simply start dragging thumbnails to the places you want them (the sort method will automatically change to Manual).
When you have the order you want, shut down iPhoto on the Mac to make sure iPhoto's database gets updated with the new photos and their order.
Restart iPhoto and go to File/Export on the top menu. Select File Export at the top left of the Export window. Set JPEG quality to Max, Size to Full Size, and File Name to Album Name and Number. Set Subfolder Format to None.
Click Export to bring up what looks like the Finder. Create an empty folder on your hard drive under Pictures and give it the name of your slide show. Click on the new folder and then click OK at the bottom right of the Finder-like window. The new folder will contain JPEG files with file names in the form, Album Name - 001.jpeg, Album Name - 002.jpeg, etc. There will also be an iPOD Photo Cache folder. Click at the top of the Name column to order files by file name. 001 will be your first slide, 002 your second, etc.
Now start up iTunes. You are going to force the Mac to sync these new photos with the iPad. Click on your iPad device in the list at the left. Now click on the Photo button at top right. Make sure the Sync Photos check box at top is checked, then select Choose Folder... from the list at right. In the Finder-like window that opens, select the folder where your slides are. Make sure that All Folders is checked, then select Open at the bottom right.
Now click Sync at bottom right. The slides will be copied to your iPad. Both the Photos app and the iPhoto app will properly handle the slide order, and the Ken Burns effect is available using the iPhoto app.
I ran across this problem in preparing a Ken Burns slide show for a wedding. Drove me nuts for a week why the order changes when syncing an iPhoto album from iMac to iPad. But this worked and gave me several options. I plan to use the digital AV adapter for iPad and show slides on a large screen TV using HDMI connection from iPad to TV. TV essentially acts as an external monitor for the iPad.

You must think I'm an idiot, Larry, because you have been incredibly precise about your instructions. However, as I keep saying, when I get to the "customize" screen, and I right-click the preview image, absolutely nothing happens. When trying to send a photo from iPhotos, I accidentally entered the wrong password. It tells me that it doesn't recognize my password, but doesn't enable me to re-submit the correct one. What should I do?

I'm trying to send a photo from iphoto - but apparently I entered the wrong password, and now it does not give me the opportunity to resubmit my correct password - it only tells me that mine was wrong and will allow me to cancel but not correct. What ISP(Internet Service Provider) are you using for e-mail?On my AOL e-mail window,there's a small camera icon in the middle bar,if I click on that it has a drop down about insert picture,insert background picture,insert hyperlink,and whatever else.Look for that.If you have something similar,try it.I would suggest doing it without any message first to see what shows up.Delete any attempts you don't care for.I found out if I clicked on the Background one,you couldn't read the message.Mine then shows a mini version of Finder window,navigate to the location of the photo you want.The suggestion of dragging photos to desktop first from open iPhoto window is excellent,the picture icons in my finder are far too small to see.The e-mail Application you use should also give you the option to resize for e-mail.Sends faster.

Edit photo in iPhoto before using in iMovie, or not?

Is it better to enhance a photo in iPhoto (edit mode) before using the photo in iMovie; or would the quality from using "auto" in video adjust in iMovie (on an unedited photo) work just as well?

I did the test with 16 photos (2 different cameras: iPhone and Lumix LX5). I auto-enhanced each photo using iMovie and iPhoto. I exported the movie as an M4V file and played it on my macbook pro using quicktime.
Results: a very mixed bag. In general, the iMovie auto-enhance yields more vivid and contrasty photos with less detail. The iPhoto ones (same photo) sometimes appear a bit washed out, but generally have more detail. The problem is some look better when done in iMovie and some look better when done in iPhoto. For most, it does not make a lot of difference, so I guess I will go with iPhoto and add other effects in iMovie.
iPhoto will allow me to straighten a photo, and iMovie won't. I do not crop photos using iPhoto because the iMovie cropping (with Ken Burns effect as an option) gives me a lot more flexibility.

How do I add locations to photos through iPhoto on iPad?

I have tried searching through the forums to find an answer to this but can't seem to find it, but apologies if I've just completely missed this and it has been covered!
My understanding is that when you want to add a location to a photo through iPhoto you need to select the 'Info' option and then just type in the location, but when I select Info there is no option to add a location, it just gives you basic information and then gives you the opportunity to comment on it. Am I just misunderstanding how you are meant to add locations or am I clicking on the wrong option?

I believe you can add location information through iPhoto '11 on the Mac, but not using iPhoto for iOS. In other words, the iPhone/iPad version of iPhoto will display map data if it is associated with a photo already, but you cannot add that map data to photos in iPhoto for iOS.
If you want to have map data associated with photos on your iPad, you have to add the location information to the photos using the desktop version of iPhoto, then import those photos to your iPad.
