Hi,
Be a good programmer rather than being a certified person.
I don't know y people give much importance to SCJP.
In my opinion any technical sound person can clear this exam with little bit of concentration on basics.
For an entry level professional it is not at all advisable to go for SCJP. Instead work on analytical skills , technical skills development .
After getting experience it is better to go for certification, if he really wants to fill a resume with one more coloumn

I participated in a JCOP training 2 years ago. It was then a two day training, where the first day was an introduction into GlobalPlatform and Java Card. If one took only the second day, the pre-requisite was to know about GlobalPlatform. So if you take the full training, I think NXP should introduce you to GlobalPlatform to make you understand the concepts and what it can be used for.

Is the Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2 enough for preparing for the 1Z0-051 and 1Z0-144 Exams?

I am planning on getting certified as an OCA PL\SQL developer. I will be teaching myself and I have all the material needed to prepare.
Except, I don't have a database that I can solve exercises on and practice commands.
The two exams I will be taking are the :
1Z0-051 exam: Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I
1Z0-144 exam: Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL
So is the Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2 is enough ?
If it is not what other options do I have (I am running Windows 8.1) ?

Yes -- 11gXE should be sufficient for practicing the vast majority of the skills required for those two exams. I *think* that PARALLEL is not enabled in XE, so you could not test the functionality referred to in the "Use NOCOPY hint, PARALLEL ENABLE hint and DETERMINISTIC clause" topic of 1Z0-144. I don't consider that to be a significant problem, however. The material from the manual should suffice for the questions you'll see.
As for what other options you have, you could download and install VirtualBox (free from Oracle). You could then make a virtual machine on your Windows 8.1 machine and install Oracle Linux (free from Oracle). You could then download and install Oracle Enterprise for Linux and install it on your virtual machine (allowable under the licensing when used for learning purposes only). I have a similar setup on my Windows 7 laptop that I use when I absolutely have to test some feature that requires Oracle Enterprise. Mind you, when I have the VM running on my system... it is ssssslllllloooooowwwwww because of the memory requirements. Looking for iPad for quadriplegic

My dad (64 years old) was in a car accident last year and became paralyzed- he has to live in a facility and the people that care for him have a lot going on and don't always have time to help him with the things he wants to do. I thought getting him an ipad might help give him some independence- for example he really misses reading books but the aides at the nursing home can't sit next to him and turn the pages, there are just too many residents- so he could either download books to the iPad or listen to them on itunes. Due to medical bills we don't have much extra money so I'm wondering if anybody has suggestions about which iPad would be the cheapest but still able to perform hands free/voice commands, run face time so he could call us, and listen to music- I think those would be the 3 moat important things to him.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Having that happen is bad at anytime but it gets even more difficult to rehab as we get older. Looking to get him more independence is a good thing it will help not only his physical condition but also his mental health.
You need to be realistic in this and realize you are not going to get an out-of-the-box solution and whatever you can come up with is going to take time. But that's OK the process is as helpful as the result.
I recommend you spend some time researching what is available and what others in your situation have come up with. There are a lot of good resources you can start with Apple OSX Based Accessible Computing - Quadriplegic and Paraplegic ... , 9 Surprising Things Quadriplegics can do with an iPhone or ... and Accessing the iPad: Mouthsticks, Head Pointers, and .... There are many more.
Also see if the facility has any information or if there is a local support group you can contact. Finally if there are any colleges or universities near you they might be a good source of information. They may even being working on this problem and be able to offer some help.
I'd resist the urge to run out and get something until you've had a chance to do a bit of research. BTW does your father have any mobility at all in his upper body? Even small amounts of movement ill make this all easier.
Good luck, be prepared for a long journey and try to look at even the littlest of success as major accomplishments.

I have a 27 in. iMac with the latest version of Snow Leopard. When Lion comes out, will it be software I purchase and download online? I am trying to prepare for cost and don't have a point of reference, having been a Windows guy until last summer.

I want to know what to expect in terms of moving from one OS to another. Having been a Windows guy until last summer, my only experience is going from one version of Windows to another, which is usually a fairly costly purchase. I will want to go to Lion, but as a retired teacher, my income is fixed. I am not looking for a specific price, I am sure that is unknown, but I would just like to know help Apple does these things so I won't be sadly surprised.

Historically Apple has sold OS X upgrades via DVD media however with the advent of the Mac Apple Store that throws another possibility into the mix. That's about as much as I can say as these forums don't allow us to speculate about future products. As for the cost historically Apple has priced OS X upgrades between $29-$129, the last upgrade (Snow Leopard) was only $29 but that was an exception. Again we cannot speculate on these forums about that. The good news is that Apple is unlike Microsoft which makes OS upgrades expensive and complicated. The choice with OS X is do you want a server version (most users don't need one) or a single computer license. The users that buy server versions tend to have a number of Macs they manage from a server, most consumers don't have this issue.
Keep reading the news, as you know Apple has announced a Summer release for Lion.
Upgrades on OS X are usually very simple. I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and each transition has been very easy. With any major OS upgrade there are some basic rules to follow, for example always, always, always backup prior to any update. When Lion is released to the general public post again for what to do to prepare or even do a Google search on "How to prepare for OS X upgrade" and you will find a number of articles that will provide some suggestions and valuable insight. HI everyone - just rec'd the disks and want to prepare my pc as best as possible before installing. I have a HP Pavilion dv7 running Windows 7 64 bit
8gb ram, 640 gb hard drive
Performace info tells me:
intel core i5 CPU M 480 @ 2.67 GHz, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370,
GAming graphics - 3571 MB total available graphics memory, dedicated graphics memory is 512 mb
Primary Hard disk 387 GB free
performace score is 5.0
I have run Advanced System Care5, spybot search and destroy, malwarebytes anit-malware, AVG free and everything looks good.
Any other suggestions to run or check beofre I do the install? I am trying to prevent any issues like I've had with Pinnacle Studio Ulitmate 14 and Windows MM in the past - virtual memory problems(with MM) and lots of crashes (with Pinnacle)....

My 3 hard drives are configured as...
1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folder and files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files (*)
(*) for 4 drives, drive 3 all source files & drive 4 all output files

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing

I have a basic foundation in Java and I am learning and preparing for Java Certificates.
Has anybody passed the test successfully who started from the beginning level?
Say, if I started today, is it possible to pass the test by May/June?

I agree if you are programmer and study an hour or 2(include reading and doing programming practice).
You need to read the book for SCJP. It is better if you can use the quiz and got a score close
to 90%.People recommend the test from whizlab and you have to pay fee.
The questions in the quiz is close to the exam in SCJP and it may help you familiar with the concept.
The book written by Kathy Sierra is good.
There are some free quizs on the internet. I myself have not bought the quiz from whizlab. I succeeded in SCJP 1.4 after one retry.
