Given a free 07 MBP 3,1 15 inch  what now? Sell or repair?

My question on the last line...background first.
Have been given a MBP 07, A1226 ..one fo the Nvidia 8600GT ones
It had ben in a cupboard for 3-5  years  ..dead.   108 cycles onteh battery from new.
It had been dropped
Graphics glitch ...wold boot to apple logo with marks around it and then a message behind that was barely readable.
Booted instantly from 10.8.4 USB instal stick.  and all went well.
For two days then back to weird graphics issue.
At this point I had not heard of the Nvidia issue..never having owned a MacBook the issue had passed me by..I assumed the drop and the dent below the CD drive were the issue..maybe they are and this is not the Nvidia issue ?
google brought the Nvidia issue and the 'bake the logic board' / reflow trick to my attention.
Nothing to loose..so   8 minutes at 200deg C and all good.
Untill some Terminal "yes device null" threads to get the thing hot   ..fans speeding up   ..CPU die temps (istat menu) showing constant 94 deg C.
All good then weird graphics again...keyboard and mouse frozen...hard power button Press and hodl to shut down.
re booted again perfectly
So bearing all the above in mind, it was a free machine, what should I do with it?
1).  Buy new 'Repaired " logic board from ebay or similar and hoep the new board does not still have the Nvidia issue.
2.)  Sell it for spares for ?  what would I get $200 ?if lucky I guess  and put that money with money i would spend on new logic board/ RAM/SSD and buy a better 'different ' machine.?  It wil be for the GF for Notes/pages/E-mail and facbook.no games heavy graphics or any processor intensive apps.
Scanning ebay shows many Airs selling for what it would cost to potentially fix this  and add ram and ssd.
Interested to see what others think

Well if it was for free it has to be worth it  even if it only lasted a year or so.
Interesting to know that they replaced it with exact same model with same problem.  I had been lead to believe that the fix was a differrent Nvida chip that although had the smae model number, was a good fix.as the 'new' chip wasa a different batch number.  I understood tht the fault was not a design fault, but a batch fault.....dodgy silicon wafe or similar on a certain production run of the grpahicd ships.
Yes, I did read that the free replacement had ended, so was not expecting a free fix, From what I had read it was a Serial Number thing and some were not affected, by that batch of dodgy chips and some were,  and it took some hardware test at an Apple store to determine if it was an affected model or not.
Would not dump it at a "recycling ' centre...I'd rather sell it off for spare. Already have had an offer from a friend for the battery and the screen.  But while it works will keep it and the GF can use it.  Her Pages work instanly goes up to iCloud...so even if it does die..not an issue

They do have their own equipment and software.  If resellers are privy to that, I do not know.

No more than I expected anyway so nothign lost and getting out the house was no inconvienence, but it does rather back up what I had read recently about Apple stores,associated re-sellers and Mac users , that they are happy to believe that, and I quote from another site that I can't find now;  "They are happy to believe that their Apple Macs run on Pixie dust and purple elephant dung"
The general reliability of OS-X  means that to most users they don't need to know, but it si a bit poor that the store reps are the same

Apple don't believe we exist as part of the UK, with UK system postcodes and phone numbers, even less chance if we were independant.  But considering that 80% of the islands population is now English and not local, true Jersey family, that woudl never happen.

    Free of charge scenarios is used in the following cases:
    1) when a new product is launched, free samples are sent to the customers. Order type used here is FD free of charge delivery.
    2) free goods is given along with other products. For eg when a customer buys 10 quantities of item X, either 1 quantity of item X or Y is given free (inclusive / exclusive). Standard order OR is used here.
    3) For eg out of 10 items sent to the customer, 2 items are damaged in transit / of bad quality, replacement products are sent to the customer. Subsequent delivery free of charge SD is used here. SD is usually created against a returns RE order.
    In all the above cases free of charge item is TANN item catg where the item is relevant for billing but pricing is not carried out. Pricing field in VOV7 is not checked for TANN.
    It is upto the company to decide if they want to charge freight tax for the free goods.

    You need to talk with the tax authorities in the countries to which you traveled and that of your home country. We are all end-users liek you and not Apple agents.

    It's more likely a failed Erase Free Space, which creates a huge temporary file; that's why it looks like you have no more available drive space. You can recover from this. See these links

  • Hey i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge

    i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge. I tried using a friends MBP charger of the same year as my computer but it still says not charging at the top right corner of the computer screen where the charging symbol is. This problem just happened out of nowhere because it was working the day before then the next day it just stopped working saying it is not charging. I tired doing all of the suggested techniques to fix it but not luck.

    As you can see where it is labeled "AC Charger information" it states that its connected but there is no Wattage and says its not charging .
    What is wrong with my mac? Is it serious and does Apple Care cover it?

    Try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your device.
    Note you may have to re-enter stored Wi-Fi passwords after using this feature.

    I'm just going to repeat the relevant sections from my previous post with the screenshots this time:
    Below you'll see a snip of how my current folder structure appears. It's identical to yours, except there are no button files in the General Folder. Since you were kind enough to include a file name, I did a search on that specific one and it's nowhere to be found on my hard drive. Hmmm....
    I've seen others remark on how... "challenging".... Adobe's instructions can be sometime. I'll admit to having the same feeling when I was trying to download and install all the content files and the 7-zip stuff. Is the answer somehow that I screwed up that?  Note the 7-zip folder right above the Adobe folder. Here's a screen shot of that expanded folder contents:
    Does that look like you think it should? Have I not installed or extracted something correctly?
    Finally, the only other thing I can think of to give you as much info as you might need is to include a screenshot of where the "Functional Content" stuff got saved. Adobe's instructions about this (if I recall correctly) were that it did NOT have to be installed anywhere specific, but you then had to go into Encore (& Premiere) and through preferences point to this stuff, which I believe I did. But I don't see any button type files in these anyway.
    Other thoughts or advice?

    The tool to flash the logic board is only "officially" available to Apple or AASPs. The OP needs to take the computer back to the AASP that did the work & have them fix things.
    Do you have a an Apple certified technician nearby?  If not, I don't think you have other options. You could email the people who did the work for you, and ask them to figure out how to help you.

    If you have exhausted your free trial period on your computer, even if you didn't actually get to try it, short of wiping and reinstalling your entire system from scratch you're not going to be able to extend the trial period.  If there was a way, there would be people who would take advantage and just never subscribe.

    You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
    This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.

    When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer.     A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
    As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine.

    Assistanttolindsey the Adobe Download Assistant will download the installation files for Adobe Acrobat Professional XI.  By default they are saved to your download folder.  You can begin the installation process from there.

    Just in case (even though your symptoms aren't explicitly mentioned in the document), let's check to see if there's a LSP problem in play here:

  • Logic board failure in MBP purchased 5/2011? What happened to quality control?

    This  MBP has only been in the two houses that I live in and has never been utilized in my travels.
    Has been in a hard case and never dropped.
    I could see this in a cheap laptop but the MBP wasn't cheap to buy and now is not cheap to fix less than 14 months out from purchase.
    Has the high resolution optional screen and otherwise utilized 4-5 times per week for short periods.
    My 10 year old G4 iMac is still running strong while this paperweight is now out for repairs. Anybody seen similar issues?

    Electronics aren't invincible and although Apple products tend to last a long time, things do happen (not always your fault). That's why Apple products have a one year warranty. You mentioned you'd had it less than 14 months. If you've had it less than a year than take it to Apple. If you've had it more than a year than hopefully you have AppleCare.
