Given up on 2560x1440 Resolution

I have a brand new 27" 3.4 i7 iMac. Love everything about it, almost. Ever since I got it I ran the highest resolution, 2560x1440, you know, because I can. Ever since I got it I found myself constantly magnifying, zooming, messing with font size settings of certain programs etc. OS X just can't handle that resolution well enough, let alone key programs like Safari and mail etc.
So, yesterday I switched to 1920x1200 and I can read things again without having to adjust stuff all the time. Is this bad eyesight or what?

The proper distance to be from a computer screen is about at arm's length. if you can't see everything properly from this distance, either your eyesight is going south or your screen has sharpness issues.
My 27" is super crisp at that resolution. The first few days I had it, I was backing up because it was a bit immersively overwhelming, so you could also be too far, at which point lowering the resolution makes sense.

  • EXACTLY what cable(s) do I need to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to an external display with a 2560x1440 resolution?

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011 w/ Intel HD 3000/ 384Mb) to an external display with a 2560x1440 resolution. Specifically, what cable/connections do I need to display at this resolution? I cannot get the display to work using a "Thunderbolt to HDMI" or a "Thunderbolt to DVI" connector.  Note:  I used both older and newer (uni-directional) HDMI cables on the first config, and a Dual-link DVI cable on the second config.   Apple specs state this is possible ( support.apple.com/kb/SP619 ), but I am at a loss as to how this can be done.  Thanks in advance for the help!

You use a Mini DisplayPort to either HDMI or dual-link DVI adapter. If that component doesn't work, something's wrong with either the cable or something else in the connection.

  • Windows 7/8.1 2560x1440 resolution on external monitor.

Hello, i have macbook pro 13 (late2013), i installed windows 8.1 and connected to my external monitor with 2560x1440 resolution. But windows allow to use maximum 2048x1152.I use minidisplayport to displayport adapter and have last drivers. Now i installed windows 7, but problem is still the same. Please help.

higher resolutions require more video memory if your macbook pro don't have enough and the windows driver can't use shared video memory then likely that could be the cause

  • Don't have 2560x1440 resolution on Dell U2711

    Hi,
I've recived the mac today and I have a monitor DELL U2711. The monitor is connected with an HDMI cable.
This is what I can set now.
Someone know what I can do to get 2560x1440 resolution?
    Thanks
    Ivan

you could try to option+click on "scale" to find out more options.
but i fear that won't solve the problem, at least this is my experience as I am in the same situation
It seems to be a problem of Mavericks. (Lion worked perfectly with the maximum resolution
Both my MBP and MacMini can't get 2560x1440 on the U2711. And yes @turbostar - with mini DP to DP.
All those work-arounds (reset PRAM, overwrite the overrides ...) don't help. So very, very VERY frustrating.
So if any ouf you finds the solution. please post here.

  • Does Nvidia GT 120 support 2560x1440 Resolution

    Hi from Germany,
I have an MacPro 4,1 Intel Xeon QuadCore, running two wonderful NEC Multisync P221W   22" monitors with 1680x1050 px resolution.
For I am working in the motion graphics business it is always no fun to work on video-spots with for example 1280x720 pix (HDTV) on an 22" monitor.
So I would like to upgrade one of the NEC monitors to a 27" monitor with 2560x1440 resolution and I would like to be sure, if the graphic card will support the two monitors.
    Thanks in advance, Andy

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 includes two video ports: one Mini DisplayPort and one dual-link DVI port. This allows you to connect both the 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display or another Mini DisplayPort-based display, and a DVI-based display such as the 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display. Display adapters are available to connect VGA displays.

  • Connect new MacPro to 27" monitor with 2560x1440 resolution

    Hello community,
I'm looking for help connecting my new Mac Pro (late-2013, 3 GHz 8-core, 64 gb ram, currently running OS X 10.9.5) to a 27" Monoprice IPS-ZERO-G monitor.  The monitor only has VGA and Dual-Link DVI inputs, and is supposed to support 2560x1440 native resolution.  However, when connecting either with a mini-display port to DVI adapter, or an HDMI to DVI cable, I'm only getting 1920x1080 resolution.  Any thoughts on how to get the full resolution I was hoping for?  Thanks!
    Justin

  • Is 2560x1440 resolution (WQHD) supported over HDMI in OS X Mavericks?

Hi, just bought a Dell UltraSharp U2713HM monitor and connected it to my Mac Book Pro (Retina) by a high-quality HDMI cable.
Unfortunately, Mac OS X sets the monitor at 1920x1080 resolution instead of its native res 2560x1440.
The specs for the MacBook says it supports up to 2560x1600 resolution.
    My questions are:
Is there anything different about HDMI cables that alloiws some to support HDMI 1.3a or 1.4, but not others? It's a high quality Cambridge Audi cable, but was bought a few years back. It has no numbers on it.
Does the MacBook Pro hardware support HDMI 1.4?
Does Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 support HDMI 1.4?
If so, I should be able to achieve 2560x1440 at 60 Hz. If not, is it possible to set a lower refresh rate in order to achieve the panel's native resolution?

The HDMI video output support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz. To free your thunderbolt port you would need a USB 3.0 4-Port Hub and a USB-to-Ethernet Adapter to connect your MacBook Pro  to the Ethernet network.  The DisplayPort is capable of driving your display with  2560×1400 resolution.

  • MacBook Pro (2011) won't display 2560x1440 native resolution on external monitor

I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with 2.2Ghz quad core and an external NEC PA271W Monitor with a 2560x1440 native resoultion. I have them plugged together via the dual-link DVI-D cable but the MacBook pro will only recognize 1920x1080 as the max resolution on the NEC monitor. How can I output the max 2560x1440 resolution to the monitor?
The MacBook Pro is left open for dual screen view. Please help. Thanks!

I am surprised no one asked you the following question regarding your response.
What if I don't what 2 displays and I only want to support the external monitor? Can I be in extended mode and have only 1 display?
The reason why I ask is because I am going to buy a dock for my MacBook (2012). The dock forces the MacBook to close thereby rendering the internal display useless.
I think what I am after is some sort of "extended to external" mode.

  • How can I run iTunes in a sharp resolution display?

My iTunes app is showing up in low resolution.
I use a 27 inch Dell monitor running in 2560X1440 resolution.
How can I get a crisp image of this app. I'm using Win8 running in desktop mode.

I uninstalled iTunes, Bonjour and even Quicktime. Next I updated my Nvidia driver, then reinstalled latest iTunes app.  In preference, the highest video version is set at 1080p which didn't help.
So now iTunes is still looking in standard resolution (not sharp enough).
    Any other ideas?

  • Why can't I get the full resolution on my Ultrawide monitor when connected to my MBP?

I just purchased an LG Ultrawide 29" monitor to hook up to my Macbook Pro (Mid-2010 model). The full resolution should be 2560x1080. The only cable that came with the monitor was an HDMI to HDMI cable, so I used a miniDisplayport to HDMI cable that I had. The screen popped up on the monitor, but it was stretched out, and there was a message saying it wasn't configured to the full resolution (and that I need to change it in the Display settings). The problem is there's no option in the Display settings for anything larger than the 1920x1080 standard resolution for this monitor.
I checked the manual that came with the monitor and it mentions that using an HDMI cable with a mac won't allow me to use the full resolution (or sound for that matter). It says instead I need to use a DVI-D dual link cable to get the monitor to work properly with a mac. Only problem is, this particular monitor doesn't have a DVI port on it (I think the manual was referring to a similar but possibly older version that had HDMI, Displayport and DVI ports on it). This one only has two HDMI ports and one Displayport port on it. I browse around online for people that had a similar problem, and I see a comment saying I just need to get a miniDisplayport to Displayport cable and then everything will work fine. I finally bought said cable (which a lot of places apparently don't carry), plugged everything in, and still no dice. The only resolution options for the monitor are still 1920x1080 and less.
Is this a problem with my Macbook? From everything I've looked up, my graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M) should support it, and it says right on the packaging for the Displayport cable that it should support up to a 2560x1440 resolution.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. It just wasn't worth the hassle. I got a good (standard size) monitor for about half the price of the old one, so I'm not too disappointed. Thanks for your help though

  • If I buy an external monitor (with a res of 2560x1440) will my early 2011 MacBook Pro work ok? And will it be utilising the monitors full res or not?

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I use Premiere Pro CS5 to video edit on. It's fine but when it comes to grading it's nearly impossible on such a small screen.
I'd like to buy a 27inch external monitor (Asus, Samsung, Dell, whatever - haven't decided yet) for when I'm editing at work (which is most days). My query is regarding the resolutions. Obviously my MacBook Pro displays a resolution of 1280x800, so if I buy a monitor with a resolution of 2560x1440 for example, what gets displayed?
And also does the connecting cable make any difference? For example, if I'm connecting by Thunderbolt out to HDMI, then an HDMI to HDMI cable to the external monitor, what happens then? Or should I be using a Mini Display Port to Display Port connecting lead?
I guess all I really want to know is, will it work? But also, am I wasting my money buying an external monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution? Should I just go for one that's the same res at my MacBook Pro?
I've never really understood how these things all work!
Thanks in advance for anyones help.
    Regards,
    Phil

I think it will work.  You would need a mini displayport to (single link) DVI adapter to hook up that monitor.
Not sure what kind of problems you had with the ViewSonic but I'm guessing the Dell is probably a better monitor anyhow.

  • H530 lack of resolution options

I've connected my TV (24 inch) as the display for my H530 but the only resolution option is 1024 x  768 which is too low. Is there a way to change this when only 1 option is given on the Screen Resolution screen? Maybe there is a way to force it to load a different resolution or add more options to the drop down?
Or is the only way around this to buy a different monitor?

    Yar.
There are MANY alternative suppliers for bound photo books in vinyl, leather, paper and hardcovers. I forget which but one of the consumer mags or one of the big photo mags did a review of the major photo book printers, including Apple's iPhoto service. They all had problems, none was deemed best.
I just tried to google "photo book services." Wrong terms, I guess, too many incorrect and blind links.

  • Display Resolution in Windows

When I run Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion 4, I am not able to run the Thunderbolt Display in 2560x1440 resolution. I can either select a resolution that doesn't fill the width of the monitor, but still looks crisp, or a lesser resolution that does fill the monitor, but looks like crap. Is Apple going to release a driver for Windows 7 so that the monitor can be run in its native resolution?

Try Parallels Desktop 7. You probably do not want to spend another $80 after dropping $1K. I purchased two (2) Thunderbolt Displays, and the Windows screens - although I did not check resolution, were very clear. I will check resolution next weekend when I am at my home where the new setup is. At minimum, try the 14 day free trial that Parallels offers.
Let me know if this works.
