Giving away computer - how do I clean up the hd?

I would like to thoroughly clean / erase everything inside my iMac G5 before giving it away. What is the best way of doing this and can it be done without losing leopard? I have the Leopard disks so should be able to reinstall if necessary.
All help gratefully received! Thanks.

Boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility, select zero out drive, then select seven passes. Once the drive is zeroed out, you can install Leopard and all traces of you will have vanished.

  • Giving away computer - how to reinstall 10.4 archive what I want.

did not find the exact answer to my question via search. I am upgrading from my current 900mhz iBook and will be giving it to a family member. There is not alot of HD space left and I would like to to a clean sweep and reinstall 10.4 for them and have all my stuff off the computer. I would like to back up all my data though so I can have it to put on my new computer. Is there a way to archive all my files etc.. to a CD and then do a clean install of 10.4?
The original OS on the computer is 10.2, will I need to reinstall 10.2 and then insert the 10.4 disc? Thanks.

Using an external drive would be much faster and more convenient than using CDs unless you don't have more than 650 MBs of data you need to preserve. You could also buy an inexpensive USB flash drive. They're available in sizes up to 8 GBs for under $20.00 or so. Again, this would be fine if it would hold all the files you wish to keep.
The new MBPs have a single FW800 port, but your iBook only supports FW400. Be sure the external drive supports both as well as USB so it can be used on virtually any computer and any Mac. FW400 and FW800 require different cables so you will need to get both cables unless they come with the drive.
If you're so inclined you can buy a separate hard drive and enclosure. This way you can choose the drive and the enclosure. Installing a drive in an enclosure takes about five minutes and a couple of Phillips head screwdrivers. You can find drives at:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com
And, many other online vendors. Enclosures may be found at:
    MacSales.com
    WiebeTech.com
    CoolDrives.com
    FirewireDirect.com
    CalDrives.com
And, many other online vendors. Be sure to buy an enclosure that uses the Oxford chipset and supports FW800, FW400, and USB 2.0.
Notebook drives and enclosures are usually bus-powered and don't require an external power source. Full sized drives (3.5") and enclosures all require using an external power source, are heavier, and not conveniently portable like notebook drives and enclosures. However, the full sized drives are faster and cheaper than notebook drives.

  • How do I clean out the "Open With" dialog box when I right click an image?f

    Hi,
When I right-click and image to open it in a program I get a long list of programs to choose from. Many are duplicated or the same program but different version #s like Preview. How do I clean out the dupes and ones I don't want and keep the ones I do?
How would I add CS3's Adobe Camera Raw to the list?

Do a search for details on cleaning up the "open with" dialog, it's been discussed before but I'm sorry I can't remember what the fixes are.
I have duplicate choices too but have never tried to clean them up.

I hope to use my previous flash designs.
    Best regards
Since Apple designed iOS (per Steve Jobs' insistence) to be specifically incompatible with Flash, I wouldn't worry about what Flash content to use in headers for devices that can never, and will never, be able to see it.
I stopped using Flash for anything in my websites about six months ago, converting what I had to HTML5 (MP4) and any new content that would have previously been done in Flash is going the be the same.

  • How do I clean up the edges?

I created a rectangle box but I cant seem to clean up the edges where the seperate rectangles meet. How do I go about this? Below is a picture.

Use a selection to mask where you want to erase the errant pixels.  The vertical lines are nice and easy, because you can use the rectangular Marquee tool.  Drag out a select close to the errant line, and nudge it closer with the arrow keys.  The use the eraser to clean away the exess.  The angled lines are more difficult, but use the Lasso  tool, and hold down the Alt (Opt) key to rubber-band the line parallel to the box, then nudge it closer with the arrow keys again.
If you are feeling clever, there is nicer way.  Assuming all the lines of your box are on a single layer, Ctrl click that layer to load it as a selection.  With any selection tool selected, place the cursor over one of the lines so that the cursor changes to a tiny rectangle.  You can now nudge that selection so it lays over the errant lines, and use the eraser tool to remove them.  The selection will be perfect as regards its angles, becaise it is the same thing.

This is also where apps store their information on your ipod, along with emails.  If you have a lot of emails on your ipod or some have large attachments, cleaning this up can also reduce the file size.

  • Leopard DVD is far away. How to install XP without the leopard dvd?

ok. Leopard DVD is far away abroad with my sister.
How to install Xp without the DVD? Is there anyway to get the drivers that are to be installed from the dvd after installing Xp?
I really need to use Autocad and Rhino on my Macpro, so Parallels or VMware fusion is not an option. I am already using VMware fusion on my Macbook pro, but VMware will not use 4g RAM of my Macpro which means it would be hard to run Rhino.
By the way, I am planning to buy Windows (I am sooooo ashamed to install that self-messed up OS on my Macpro. but so what,,, Autocad and Rhino do not run on Mac, and I need specifically the two programs). XP with sp2, sp3, or vista. which one is the best option?
Since my Macpro has only One 2.8GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon, there is no need to buy XP professional? (XP home doesn't support multi-processors, and XP Pro does, I guess?)

VMware Fusion uses only 512 RAM maximum, doesn't it? But you said it will use my entire 4GB RAM but only 2 cores. That's something different from what I've known.
If fusion really uses 4gm RAM of my mac pro, I don't really have to use Boot Camp. But most people who need to run heavy programs in Windows choose Boot Camp because it's the only way to use a Mac just like a PC, meaning that the XP uses the entire RAM memory.
XP will only use 2 GB of RAM, no matter how much the system has.
I just found out that Rhino doesn't really work on Vista. So vista is ruled out.
Only Vista 64-bit recognizes all system RAM.

You may need the "gopro" agent if you've a "GoPro" camera, and you may need the "sierrawireless" and "novatelwireless" if you use a Sierra Wireless device of some sort and if you actually need the novatel drivers, but I think that you can safely get rid of the Seagate drivers (unless you need them for some sort of NAS???) and the other stuff.
Give a call back and tell us what you actually have and actually need. Most of it just looks like junk!
