Giving used iPad to Family Member

What do I need to do to clear my old (1st generation) iPad before giving it to a family member? What will he need to do to activate it for his own use? If I clear my old iPad, will that affect the content of my new (3rd generation) iPad?

All that is required is for you to go to Settings, then General, then Reset, and go to Erase All Content and Settings. If the iPad has iOS 5, the new owner will only need to follow the on-screen setup. If the iPad has an earlier version, the new owner will need to connect to iTunes to set it up.

  • Giving old iPhone to family member

I just upgraded to an iPhone 4 and am giving my old iPhone 3g to a family member. I found the articles on restoring the old phone as a new device but I also want to keep some existing content on the phone. Both phones will sync through the same iTunes account. Is this possible and how do you do it.

You can sync as many devices as you want to the same itunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, upon subsequent syncs. So, restore the phone as new & then sync whatever content you want on the phone.

  • Have new iPad giving old one to family member

Hi can anyone take me through the steps needed to get this sorted. Want to keep photos on old one then register new one to my account and other to a new account
Will old one keep all apps and other things?
Will new one loaf all old stuff
    Please help

You won't be able to do exactly what you want. At least not directly
Read through this about wiping/moving stuff off your iPad and getting ti ready for resell/handing down

The only way to keep the photos would be to upload them somewhere and then redownload  them once you set the iPad up for the new owner.
Apps aren't tied to a device. they're tied to the Apple ID, so when you set it up for the new owner and they put their ID on there, they'll have to start over with their apps.

  • Giving iPhone 4 to family member, already erased all content and settings

I am giving my iPhone 4 (Verizon) to my younger brother who is in college b/c I picked up a iPhone 5 (Verizon) yesterday. I have already erased all content and setting via the reset. I have also went to the apple page to unregister the device under my apple id and phone number. Now I have heard horror stories of people selling their iPhones and for some reason the person who they sold it to will get the sellers iMessages. Has anyone experienced this before with selling Verizon CDMA phone?

That's a great question, Vell! I can understand why this is important to you! I can confirm that you have taken all the necessary steps to ensure that your brother does not receive your iMessages. I have also provided you with a great link that should soothe any lingering concerns...http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4627 Have a great day!

  • Giving MacBook Air to family member

Hello everyone I am going to give my MacBook Air to my mother in a couple of weeks
I would like it to be so that it works as if it has just came out of the box eg there is no Apple ID, mail account, system preferences, documents etc. tied to it so she can use her own as if there had never been a previous user
Also if I do this will she have the Mountain Lion operating system (this was purchased with my Apple ID) or will she have Lion which the computer came with
thank you for any help you can give

You would boot to your Recovery Partition, and then use Disk Utility to erase the drive. Following this, you would use the Reinstall OS X utioity on the Recovery Partition to reinstall the operating system. At the end of the installation, it will re-boot. Just turn off the computer at that time.
If you upgraded to Mountain Lion, then the Recovery Partition is a Mountain Lion Recovery Partiton. As such, I believe it will install Mountain Lion. A bit of a legal quandary if it does, because the user won't be using the Apple ID for which the license is valid. This might lead me to the possibility that it will install Lion, even though the Recovery Partition is labeled Mountain Lion. Someone else who has already done this would have to definitively answer.
BTW, you boot to the Recovery Partition by holding down the OPTION key while booting, this causes Boot Manager to run. You will then select the Recovery Partiton from a list of valid boot drives.

  • Just got a new iPad. How do I move my Game Center games?  I keep getting another family member's account because we share our Apple ID.

Hi. I just got a new iPad. How to I move my Game Center games from my old iPod?  My family uses one Apple ID, and I keep getting another
Family member's Game Center on my iPad!

Okay so I figured out the solution by reading other discussions. Basically you need to delete on your phone the icloud account and start up a new icloud account with a new email address. This is nice because you can still share apps without getting everyone elses things. The only thing that didn't get worked out was the notes...
On your phone go to settings and then icloud, scroll down and delete the account. Then just make a new icloud under a new email.

  • HT201382 Our family all bought each other gift cards for Christmas and set up our iPads to family sharing.  When any family member makes a purchase, it will only be charged to the credit card and NEVER the gift card amount! WHY? Is there a way to fix this

We just set up family sharing on our iPads and we all have$50 of iTunes cards that have been placed on our accounts.  Why can no one in the family redeem the money from their itunes cards... Instead being charge ONLY to the "organizers" credit card? This is driving us crazy? Now all our Christmas present have gone to waste? Can anyone help?

    Hello there ssyer,
Family Sharing purchases do all go to the Organizers credit card by default, that is unless there is an existing credit or balance on the account requesting the purchase according to this article:
    Family purchases and payments
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed.
Balances can be verified with this article if you need:

  • A family member recently downloaded an iBook on my device using their apple I'd. Now I don't have access to the material I've purchased using my apple I'd for 90 days! So frustrated! Any tips?

A family member recently downloaded an iBook on my device using their apple I'd. Now I don't have access to the material I've purchased using my apple I'd for 90 days! So frustrated! Any tips? ITunes won't allow me to download the books I've paid for!!

That wasn't something that I was aware of, but looking at this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627 I'm not sure that there is much you can do about the device itself. I'm also not sure whether it only affects downloading directly on the device itself or whether you can connect the iPad to your computer and sync content across to it from your account that way - or even whether restoring back to factory defaults on the iPad will bypass the 90 days

There is a contact on my account useing a family members picture that has been hacked from another family member's account.  I did not add this contact and my family member has deleted their account.  Why?  and what should I do

Thank you for your inquiry and the suggestions from our valued community members. Adding to what was stated, anyone who upgrades to the iPhone would need to activate it via iTunes. The upgrading line's voice mail box will be deleted and then needs to set up a new voice mail box.  The saving of the information of the voice mail prior to upgrading to the iPhone is suggested unless it is not needed. When doing an upgrade on a line, it will have the new 2 year agreement regardless of giving it away.
The one who wants the iPhone on their line will repeat the process with activating it via iTunes with their voice mail box being deleted and re set up just like the first line that upgraded performed. However, once the voice mail box process has been completed on both lines, one after the other during the activation process it does not need to be done again on either line. As far as the warranty, when giving selling your phone to another, the warranty is voided and is not able to be transferred.

  • A family member has purchased a iPad and has almost totally screwed up the set up of the unit. Incorrect email contact info, and mistakenly entered the wrong birthdate on the security question. So many errors I think it will be easier to start from scratc

A family member has a new Ipad 2 and has made errors or has forgotten so much of the set up info that I cannot figure out how to help him. I think it would be easier to start from scratch. Security question entered wrong. Email account entered belongs to someone else etc... Please help!

  • I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?

I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1 to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?  Each time I try a different password (trying any that I thought I might have originally used) it times out the tablet for up to an hour before I can try again.  Help?

You can restore the device. That is what you have to do if you forget the passcode. You don't have to worry about syncing to your own computer either since you don't want to restore your data - you want to wipe it clean. Read these articles for more instructions

Sometimes you may not be able to bypass the passcode at all when you try to restore. You may need to restore by putting the iPad into recovery mode. I have heard from some users that they did not have to do this when they restore after forgetting the passcode - but just in case you need the information, this will help you with that procedure.
