GL1 or GL2 w/ FCE

Any thoughts on the video quality of either the Canon GL1 or GL2 used with FCE. Thinking one of these may be a good fit for shooting skateboarding footage due to their ergonomics and large lense. I know that these are not HD, as I would prefer, but I hear that the 3CCD sensor gives as good a picture as some consumer entry level HD camcorders. Is this true? Would they look good being viewed on an HDTV?
The majority of these films being put together will be short in duration and posted to youtube.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I have an AVCHD camcorder and I love it, especially the whole ingest process. It really comes down to whether you would like HD 16:9 footage or SD 4:3 footage. I prefer the large frame sizes my AVCHD camcorder gives me.
Whether or not AVCHD is the future can be debated for countless hours. The undeniable present is in tape-based camcorders. One thing is for sure though, that SD DV camcorders are on their last legs. Soon the market will turn to only be HD camcorders, it's already starting.
It really is your choice. You might try looking into HDV cameras as well, because they shoot tape but they are HD. In the end, the real decision you will have to make is do you want HD footage or SD footage? Either way, you will probably burn onto SD DVDs.
Also, remember that HDV and AVCHD are transcoded to AIC upon capture/ingest resulting in much larger file sizes. If using one of these, it is a good idea to use an external drive to store your media.
If you're interested, you might have a browse through the HDV and AVCHD camcorders on the Canon site:

Several of these cameras (both consumer and professional) have quite large lenses that I'm sure you would be pleased with.

  • Wont recognize GL2

Ok so my imac broke and I got a new one and ever since then, I cannot upload from my GL2 into FCE. I use the DV NTSC Firewire basic like usual and still wont even let me capture anything. This is getting very frustrating and I have even tried capturing from my mom's sony dv camera and it wont recognize that either. I have tried that camera on multipe capture settings with no success. Someone help me please!!!

    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras

Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)

    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes

    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Video card for capturing HD

I had problems capturing HD footage using Canon GL camera and it had something to do with the HD device on my mac.
*Do I need a different video card to capture HD?*

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the exact model of your camcorder? a GL1 or GL2 ? Those models do not do HD.
See FCE HD 3.5 user's manual (help menu) from page 207 to see how to capture HDV from HDV camcorders.
FCE HD doesn't support capture cards, and the capturing process doesn't involve specific video card requirements.

  • Batch input session for FI postings

At the time of batch input session processing for FI postings (Transaction FB01), session is terminated due to following error message -
    Message no. 00349
Field BSEG-PRZNR. does not exist in the screen SAPMF05A 0302
Batch session has been created using LSMW for data upload. As per field status of the GL account, some of the line items may or may not require an entry for particular field. How can we ignore this error during batch input session when a field is not required to be input for a particular GL account. However, flat file format contains this field because it is required for some of the GL accounts.
Let me know if you need more information / example. I desperately need a solution.
    Regards,

    Dear Abhilasha,
Lets assume you have two gl accounts gl1 and gl2. gl1 requires this field to be entered, whereas gl2 does not allow you to enter value.
In this case, modify your logic as below:
I believe you can write code in LSMW as well.
However, if you are using BDC you can write logic as follows:
    if gl_account_field = gl1.
      PERFORM bdc_field       USING 'BSEG-PRZNR'
                                           value.
    endif.
    Hope this will help.
    Regards,
    Naveen.

  • Help with Update query including JOIN

    Hi,
This is my first post to this forum and really hoping someone is able to help me write an update query.
    Here is my data model:
    Table (Columns)
    Services (ServiceCode, BranchID, GLCodeGUID)
    GLCodes (GLCodeGUID, BranchID, GLCode)
I have added valid GLCode data to the Services table for BranchID = 99
I would like to update all other branch records in the service table to their corresponding GLCodeGUID values  matched by GLCode.
This is the query I have come up with so far which is incorrect.
    UPDATE S
    SET S.GLAccountCodeGUID = G.GLCodeGUID
    FROM Services S
    JOIN GLCodes G
    ON G.GLCodeGUID = S.GLAccountCodeGUID
    JOIN Services SM
    ON S.ServiceCode = SM.ServiceCode and SM.BranchID = 99
    WHERE S.BranchID != 99
    AND S.IsActive = 1
    ORDER BY S.ServiceCode

Received some assistance from a work colleague and solved this with the following Query:
    UPDATE s2 SET s2.GLAccountCodeGUID = gl2.GLCodeGUID
    FROM Services s1
    JOIN GLCodes gl1
    ON s1.GLAccountCodeGUID = gl1.GLCodeGUID
    JOIN GLCodes gl2
    ON gl1.GeneralLedgerCode = gl2.GeneralLedgerCode AND gl1.BranchID <> gl2.BranchID
    JOIN Services s2
    ON s1.ServiceCode = s2.ServiceCode AND s1.ServiceCode = s2.ServiceCode AND s1.BranchID <> s2.BranchID
    WHERE s1.BranchID = 99 AND gl1.BranchID = 99 AND
    s2.BranchID = 2 AND gl2.BranchID = 2

  • No audio on iDVD6

My thanks to everyone who has posted possible solutions to this problem - particularly SDMacuser. I do appreciate your ideas. I have tried all of them to no avail. Still have problem of no audio on rendered DVD. Audio on menu plays ok, just no audio at all on rendered DVD. Have a 54 min video, shot on GL1 and GL2 cameras. Have verified audio is not muxed on GL2 (new camera for this project). Steps I have tried: changed DVD mfrs, ensured Motion Button is on, checked for 3rd party QT plug-ins, Deleted Encoded Assets, deleted iTunes music, deleted and reset Chapter markers, re-installed iDVD and QT, have rendered to Disc Image - all to no fix. Still have no audio !!! You can imagine how frustrated I am. Am a 6 year user of iMovie/iDVD. Have talked with Apple Support and Genius Bar but now solutions yet. Has anyone solved this problem or have new ideas??
    Thx in advance

i too am having the same problems with iDVD 6.0.4. I just ended up wasting 5 hours of time burning these damned DVDs... what was really strange is that the first DVD I burned was a dual-layer, and I checked that one on a set-top DVD player and it worked fine. I then needed 5 more copies of the DVD, so I simply inserted a fresh dual-layer DVD into the drive at iDVD's prompt of 'Would you like to burn this disc again?'.
Assuming that they would all be fine since the first one was fine, I simply burned 5 more DVDs. Only now, checking them after I've wasted a godawful amount of time burning them, do I find that they're all f#$ked. Thanks apple.
Crap like this makes me steamed. My PC burning software doesn't have nearly the same simple, elegant interface as iDVD, but it also lacks this CATASRTOPHIC problem. I mean, dual layer DVDs are relatively pricey... so screw apple. i will be glad to go home to my PC after being forced to work with this junky, buggy software.

  • 4:3 footage to 16:9 output

I want to capture footage shot in 4:3 on my Canon GL2 into FCE 4, but edit and output the final movie in 16:9. (I shot the 4:3 using the 16:9 guidelines in my Canon to accommodate the expected change in aspect ratio.) What Easy Setup selections do I make?

I have no idea what Canon means by "16:9 guidelines," and I can only assume that it means anamorphic material.
All anamorphic means is that the camera squishes 16:9 information into a 4:3 frame while capturing. The material can then be "un-squished" upon editing and for playback.

  • Canon Issues. As with everyone else.

I've had great success with Canon and iMovie on my macbook. Now It's time to use the GL2 with FCE on my G5. It worked the first couple of times, then it quit recognizing it... but I was still able to use capture now. However, today is a new day.
When connecting the GL2 via FW400 I see it in the system profiler as an "Unknown Device." If I daisy chain it through my Lacie 2BigTriple (FW800) I get nothing...
The GL2 has also been known to freeze FCE and then "disconnect" my lacie. It then takes forever to restart... unless I unplug or turn off the camera.
Basically, Why won't Canon cameras connect? This is crazy and I have myself because I have an HV20 being shipped to me tomorrow at 10:30 am. Was this a mistake? (as in should I have bought a Sony...) Will I ever be able to connect this camera to my ol' computer?

The problem is the Firewire implementation on the Canon camera. Disconnect your Lacie drive (and any other Firewire devices connected to your G5). Make sure your GL2 is the only device connected to the G5's Firewire ports. Capture to your internal drive.
You might consider getting a separate FireWire card for your G5 in order to have a second Firewire bus. Then you could connect your Canon cam to the card and your Lacie drive to the G5's onboard Firewire ports. Since they will be on separate Firewire busses there will be no conflict.
OWC can recommend a card that should work.

  • Firewire / iMac question

I've been reading the forums for a while and I saw some topics about firewire and whatnot... im not too technical when it comes to these things...
From what I gather, it wouldn't be wise to capture from my camera (hooked up to the firewire connections on my iMac) to my external firewire HD?

I'm looking into purchase of a camcorder and thought Cannon was the Mac cam of choice?<<</div>
I can't imagine where you heard that ... from a Canon sales rep, perhaps?
The truth is, there is no such thing as a "Mac cam of choice" and even if there was, I seriously doubt it would be a Canon product. In all reality, if you're talking about consumer/prosumer type camcorders, I imagine Sony would lead the pack if you compare shear number of units sold and in use.
Not that Canon doesn't make decent camcorders; its their loose adherence to the Firewire standard that seems to create problems with FCP. With most camcorders, you can use FCP's device control setting of Firewire NTSC (in NTSC land, of course). But with Canon, most people have better luck with the device setting in FCP at "Firewire Basic" and even then, many have problems. Note that this problem doesn't occur nearly as much when using another brand for capturing footage shot in a Canon camcorder.
Don't get me wrong though, many people will swear by their Canon gear and may never have a problem. And they do make a very good camcorder - I owned 6 L1's and L2's back in the early days of Hi8 and loved them. But after you read post after post about "dropped frames" problems on this board and others for a few years, you'll soon find that the majority of the people with those problems are using a Canon camcorder as a capture device.
OPINION: I don't own or normally use any of the small camcorders on the market, but I have had gigs shooting with several models and then editing the footage. These included Canon's GL1 and GL2, XL1; Sony's VX2000 and 2100, the PD150 and DSR200 and 250 and Panasonic's DVX100. While I don't really like shooting with a small camcorder (I'm too use to shooting full manual with real lenses that have real iris, focus and zoom controls), there are times when nothing else will do the job that they can. And in this business, its all about using the right tools for each job you do.
My personal recommendation for a DV only, prosumer type camcorder would be the Panasonic AG-DVX100 - hands down. In terms of image quality, it will more closely match the vibrant image of many larger chip cameras equipped with a pro lens.
The image produced by small the Sonys (up to the DSR-250) and Canons tend to be a little of the soft side for my liking and the colors a bit flat as well. But as I indicated, this is only my opinion - nothing more.

  • Cannon GL2 - FCE 2 and iMovie Capture Problems

    Hello Hello
I've read here that folks are having a tough time capturing with thier Cannon GL2. The device goes from NO problem to 'Can't intiate a capture because the device looses connectivity.
I tried to find a common denominator to this problem, and it seems this post regarding Quick Time Files can help? Yes?
    Is this the main problem?
Anyway I'm also having connectivity issues with both iMovie 6 HD, and FCE 2
Just wondering if I should also follow the directions on this post and have my capture problems solved?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
    BTW - I currently have Quicktime 7.0.4
    Thanx

Hi Tom - Thanx for your reply!
Well, yes I have (as my profile indicates), a G5 1.8 Gig, currently with an external Lacie HD plugged in. I also have a Cannon GL2.
But before I go any further, and before I try those directions for cleansing certain Quick Time 7 Library Files, I think I figured out the dilemma.
This problem of GL2 recognition (from what I've read), is common for folks who have similar equipment, and a similar set-up as mine:
It seems (as I've also read here), that my G5 does NOT like 2 devices which require the same connection speed plugged into the 1394 Firewire Port at the same time - trying to share the same bus.
I confirmed this by disconnecting the Lacie FIRST - then booting back up - and WALLAH - the GL2 was certainly receoginzed both in iMovie 6 HD, and FCE 2!
I also further resolved the issue by buying a 'cheaper' Cannon Camcorder - the ZR500.
Now I can actually share the Lacie HD in the Fire Wire Port with this slower connection speed camcorder. And a further benefit is giving my GL2 a rest when it comes to 'capture only'
    Does all this make sense?
If so, perhaps I've already discovered stuff that other folks already know ...
    Thanx
    Mike

  • FCE with a Canon GL2?

    Hello
I am a fairly new convert to Mac, purchasing my iMac just this spring. I love it and now understand why Mac users I have known in the past enjoyed their computes so much.
I am a novice and aspiring filmmaker and one of the main reasons I purchased a Mac is for DV (but I did not get FCE pre-installed; long story). So my question is: I have a Canon GL2, and want to purchase Final Cut Express. I have done some research and found conflicting information. Will FCE work without excessively crashing while importing video? Does having a Dual-Core processor cause other problems? I think I have read too much info and varying accounts from differing sources and thought I'd try here before I purchase Final Cut Express.
    Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to the forum!
The GL-2 should work fine, but there are known issues when using a Canon device for capturing.
Due to Canon's rather lax implementation of the Firewire standard, Canon devices often don't play nice with other FW devices on the same bus. Since ALL macs only come with one Firewire bus (regardless of the number of FW ports), this can present a problem during capture. It's easy enough to solve with a desktop tower or a laptop with a card slot by adding a Firewire card (which creates a second FW bus in the Mac). But an iMac has no expansion capabilities.
    The workarounds are:
Connect your external FW drive to your Mac via Firewire - this will be your capture/scratch drive in FCE. Then connect the GL-2 to the drive's other FW port. In FCE, set Device Control to "Firewire Basic."
    or
Connect the GL-2 directly to your iMac. Capture to your internal drive, then close FCE and shut down the iMac. Disconnect the camera and plug in your external FW drive. Reboot then move the newly captured files to the external drive for editing.

  • FCE does not recognize Canon GL2--HELP!

I recently purchased FCE, and this is the first time I've used it for a project. When I originally installed the software, I did not have an external device to set up (I'm using my friend's Canon GL 2).
I am trying to capture video from the GL2, but whenever I run the easy setup, it says "Unable to loacte the following external devices:, etc."
The camera is on and set to VCR mode, and properly connected to the computer.
The really strange thing is that iMovie recognizes and is able to capture from the camera.
I have tried everything in the manual and the support site to fix this problem. I have reinstalled FCE, I have shut down my computer, turned the camera on and off, then restarted the computer. I have logged in with a different user account and tried it from there. Everything yields the same result.
Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?
It's times like these when you really wish that Apple had free tech support.
    Thanks

You have reached the free tech support ... lol
Make sure you are using Firewire BASIC as the camera firewire control protocol.
Is there a firewire drive between the camera and the computer? Try capturing with the Camera directly connected to the computer. Canon cameras are notorious for their shaky implementation of the firewire protocols and do not play well with other devices on the firewire bus.
If it still won't capture, Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
Also when you try to capture, make sure the camera is turned on BEFORE you boot the computer.
    Good luck.

  • Mid Project Upgrade from Canon GL2 to Canon XH A1 using FCE HD

I am working with Final Cut Express HD - am in the middle of a video project - and my Canon GL2 camera was stolen. Can I upgrade to a new Canon XH A1 to shoot and import new footage?
Will it be compatible with the footage shot with the GL2, which was NTSC?
Specs say the XH A1 has a frame rate of 30 frames per second, while my GL2 advertised 28 frames per second, but actually used 29.
    Any answers would be appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Jim

28 must be typo of some sort. NTSC should be 29.97 frames per second.
You should be Ok IMO. The XH A1 is HDV, you will have to configure it to match the other camera settings. Refer to the manual as some of these cameras have a minefield of options for output.

  • I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import...

I just bought a brand new Cannon GL2 camcorder and I am trying to import some video footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.01. Whenever I put up the Log and Capture screen and turn my camcorder on the computer starts to think(the spinning color wheel) and not let me do anything else not even press play unless I completely turn the camcorder off again which defeats the whole purpose of me even importing footage. I don't understand why the Log and Capture screen won't let me import any video my old Sony Digital Hi8 was importing just fine a day ago, but now that I bumped up to the GL2 for some reason the Log and Capture screen isn't doing it's job so well by the computer starting to think(the spinning color wheel) instead of working. I have used the Cannon GL1 in the past and it worked like a charm. So I don't understand why the GL2 wouldn't be any easier? It is just giving me this problem and I don't know wether it's the firewire bus or what? Can someone please help me with my dilemma?

Ha...ha..very funny...but ah yeah from reading other posts on the "Canon" GL2 I figured out that you can't have multiple devices plugged into the firewire bus at the same time while you're importing video into Final Cut Pro. That's a HUGE bummer...thanks guys for your help you where fast and reliant. But now I have another problem my internal hard drive only has 4 GB out of 75 GB and my applications take up at least 40 GB of space. How am I going to connect my 600 GB external hard drive to the computer and import footage at the same time? Can you guys help me with this now?
