Hi,
Try reinstalling the Graphics Driver - Download the driver installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50640.exe
When the download has completed, temporarily disable your Security software, then open your Downloads folder, right click the Installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to begin the installation.  Hopefully, this should complete successfully.  When finished, restart the notebook and see if this has helped the issue.  Remember to re-enable your security software after the restart.

  • Windows 8 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx Upgrade results in black screen after intallation finalizes.

I have a 2011 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx with Windows 7 64 bit Home premium installed.  The notebook/laptop has a AMD Radeon HD 6300M series display adapter with driver version 9.2.2.0 dated 9/27/2012 and an ATI technologies Intel HD Graphics display adapter with driver version 8.7771.1.0.  The notebook/laptop has not had a hardware upgrade and contiains the orignal factory OS. BIOS is current to latest available.
The issue I had while upgrading to Windows 8 is after the install finalizes (settings and preferences are entered) and the system boots to the tiles screen, the display works fine.  Clicking to the desktop works only for a few moments before the screen goes dark. Pressing the power button and/or closing/opening the lid results in at times a black screen (no power to the screen) or black screen (power to the screen) or a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible and moves around the screen.  Restarting the computer results in a repeat of the issue at times while other times it will boot directly to what appears to be the windows desktop. You can interact with the file folder icon on the task bar as well as internet explorer, and you can get the charms bar and tile screen. Any attempt to open computer management or any control panel or task manager will open the window as an icon on the task bar.  You can mouseover the icon to "preview" a small version of the window but you can not click on it to maximize.
    I attempted the following workarounds:
    1) Clean install of Windows 8: Installs but fails with same result as above
Refresh PC from windows 8 rescue media: Works slightly longer until AMD driver fails and then reverts to situation above.
    2) Uninstalling all display adapters (via computer management) and then upgrading to Windows 8: Results in microsoft drivers getting installed, works much as refresh above until AMD driver fails and then reverts to above situation.
    3) In Scenarios 1 and 2,  I also tried to use windows update within Win8 to update the drivers there are updated MS drivers available ,(dated as late as 10/27/2012) but intalling those drivers also resulted in a failure of the adapter within a short period of time as did NOT updating the drivers.
    4) Disabling display adapters and then restarting:  Results in a BSOD (Blue Screen) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x0000000A error during boot as the OS runs into trouble with the driver before Windows 7 boots.  This happens if one or both drivers are disabled.
    5) Disabling display adapters before in-place upgrade to Windows 8 results in the Windows 8 equivalent of a BSOD and results in the system shutting down and then reverting to Windows 7.
Through research, I determined some ppl had luck connecting another monitor/HD TV through VGA/HDMI and then using the function-screen button to switch, with my system this resulted in the same issue displayed on the TV/Monitor. There are also updates to ATI and Catalyst center available including drivers and installing these do not remedy the issue. Intel was checked and there are no drivers available as HP uses a "custom" driver for intel.  Attempting to install any of these Intel drivers will result in a fail with a compatiblity error.
Windows 8 has no safe mode ability from the windows 8 rescue media disk, you cannot F-8 as you could in the preview. Safe mode must be reached via charms, settings, startup and then selecting safe mode as a boot option, which is not available as the display adapter malfunctions.  In those scenarios where I was able to get a windows desktop to boot up as in the first paragaph I can get to the restart settings via charms, but clicking to bring up the restart menu requires another window to open which is only visible as a "preview" on the windows task bar.
if you are going to attempt to try any of these,
    1) Use a third party software to image your pre-win 8 upgrade system that you can boot into from USB or CD;
    2) Before starting the process, disable the UAC prompt and remove any passwords from logon, as those things will require you to interact with the OS and you will not be able to do this when the adapters fail.  The screen will shadow out as it usually does but the prompt will not be viewable.
    3) Create an ISO image of the Win8 install media and write down the product key. If you are able to get a successful boot, before the drivers fail, create a Windows 8 rescue media disk.
I spoke with HP tech support this morning (10/29/2012) they are aware of the issues and they lie with the display adapters.  They are working toward a solutuion but there are none available at this time and no date when they will be available.  They recommend checking the support website and having the web page autoscan your PC as the drivers will show there when they are posted and they will be installable from Windows 7 so there will be no issue with upgrading to Windows 8.  Bottom line, do not upgrade to Windows 8 at this time.
MS Tech support escalation tier reps also informed me there is no present workaround available.
Hope this helps and saves somebody some time!

My laptop sat at BestBuy from Friday night until today (10-31-12)! They couldn't figure out how to fix the problem so I finally told them to revert my latop back to Windows 7! I hope HP reads these and will hurry up and make the updates needed so that I can run Windows 8 on my Laptop! I just bought mine in July of last year there is nothing wrong with it and after dropping about $1200.00 for my dv7-4285dx along with the Best Buy Geek Squad package I do not feel like having to drop more money into another laptop!! PLEASE HURRY AND FIX THIS I DIDN"T DROP $69.99 plus tx to not be able to use Windows 8! Even before I did the upgrade I had the GEEk Squad check to make sure I could make the upgrade and was told this laptop well surpasses the required minium to run Windows 8!!!!!!

  • Pavilion dv7-4285dx: cannot BOOT/POST to external VGA and internal LCD is dead (cracked)

I have cracked the screen of my HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx so badly that I cannot read anything on it. I am trying to boot to an external monitor on VGA port, but never get a signal.
I have tried the monitor switching key, but that doesn't do anything. I have tried disconnecting the internal LCD from the motherboard - no different. I have tried a CMOS reset by removing the laptop battery, removing CMOS battery, disconnecting power supply and holding power button down for >1 minute, then restarting with just external LCD attached, but STILL no video on VGA port.
The video adapter is okay, as it boots to Windows and then I have video on the external monitor.
Although it's good that I can use the ext. monitor once Windows boots, I need to have video at boot time to make changes to BIOS.
Does anyone have another suggestion of how I can get the BIOS to detect and display to external VGA at boot time?

  • HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx dark screen

    Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx.  It has been working great until I shut down, put it in travel bag, and tried to boot up once I was at my destination.  It gives a black screen, but I can faintly see the screen when I shine a light on it.  I can see the desktop when I attach an external monitor to it.
Could you tell me if my screen has gone bad and needs replacing or is it something else?
BTW, I am running windows 7, if that makes any difference and the only change that I made, program-wise, is having Carbonite upgrade my machine to their newest version of software. That was done about one week before I had this problem occur.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
    Janis Belcher

i've had a quick look through myself and can't see the backlight either, you may have to purchase an entire LCD unit assembly which is very expensive (605337-001)
this can be purchased from the link below
    http://www.chilternitparts.com/productDetail?PartNumber=605337-001
unless somebody else know the part number for the backlight specifically then this is all i can advise

  • Hp pavilion dv7-4285dx

I need to know why my laptop lost my cd/dvd drive and how to fix it. It was working one day and now it does not even show up as a drive but it shows up in device manager. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Click to open the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Right click on the first channel and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When uninstalled repeat the process for each channel.  Also if an ATA controller is listed, right click and uninstall this, again not deleting drivers if asked. Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.
Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices.  Check the drive again.
If it still isn't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Broken Plastic Bottom on Pavilion dv7 (images)

So, I have an HP Pavilion dv7 - 4285dx. The plastic shell on the bottom is broken, as the pictures show. I’m not sure what happened, as I’m very careful with my computer and have never dropped it, but my theory is that the heat (it gets scalding hot sometimes, even when just sitting on a table) from the fan in that corner warped the frame and caused the plastic to start snapping. There is now a small chunk missing, as is visible in the pictures, and there’s another small crack lower down the side.
My warranty expired in February, but it seems like this would be a faulty product kind of thing, so does anyone think that HP would do anything about it? Or does anyone have an idea as to what I could do about it? Would it be possible to buy just a new computer body that I could put my current hard drive in?

I  purchased my laptop about 3-4 years ago.
A few years ago, my computer exhibited the same problem where it looked like the case was being pryed open.  I never really took it apart or did anything since I use it more like a desktop than anything else
Last night I took it apart and found the following:
The right side hinge and support structure is very robust.  The screen hinge attaches to the laptop base through a metal tab on the base (which has a screw insert on the bottom).  The force is distributed very well in this area.  On he left side, I saw that there was no metal support.  The screen metal hinge screws right into a brass looking insert which is just pressed into the plastic base.  On my laptop, the left side insert pulled right out of the plastic, and was basically prying up on both halves of the base, causing the gap when you close it.
When I was trying to rotate the hinges, I found that the left and right hinges took a TON of effort to rotate.  in the closing direction: If the insert is OK, there should be no problems since the hinge is "pushing" itself into the plastic base.  But when you open the laptop, that screw insert wants to be pulled out.  in doing so, it breaks the plastic and causes it to pry the case open, causing the gap.
I think this was an assembly error, not a design problem.  It looks like they intended the right side to bear 90% of the force, while the left side just acts as a pivot.  I think the left hinge stiffness was set way too high from the assembly line.  If you look carefully at the screen hinges, you can see a nut which is covered by the silver looking plastic hinge covers.  You need a 1/4" drive socket set and a 5.5 mm socket.  I was able to do it with a shalow socket, without an extension.
I ended up loosening this nut so you could easily turn it by hand.  Now all the force is taken by the right-side robust hinge, where the left side just acts as a pivot.
I tried to use a metal epoxy in the area, but the stuff I had was too old and didn't bond well.  Hopefully I can find a junk computer and just get the replacement base.
To fix this, you can get a new bottom case for about $100, then loosen the nut on the left hinge so that there is minimal force going through that joint (you should be able to rotate the left hinge without he-man strength).
It also doesn't help that the left side hinge sees the highest temperatures.  The thermal cycling along with the pretty weak cooling system could make that joint more likely to break.
By the way I took it apart originally becuase my laptop temperatures were crazy high doing non-intensive tasks.  The cooling system was pretty bad.  it only takes a small build-up of dust to block off the exit for the hot air.  Be sure to clean this area if you notice that you can cook an egg on your laptop.

  • Can not restore windows to factory condition on dv7-4285DX

I have an HP Pavilion DV7-4285DX running windows 7 HP.  I noticed about two weeks ago that my support assistant is not working, i have tried reinstalling it but nothing happens.  I tried tonight to restore the computer to factory condidtions but it says that it cant restore to factory because the Hard drive has been changed to dynamic.  Ehat does this mean? and how do i fix it.  I have everything backed up so i am willing to do anything to be able to restore to factory settings
    PLEASE HELP!

When you add extra partitions to the hard drive it changes it to Dynamic. Did you burn a Recovery Disc set? If so boot from the first one to reformat the hard drive and reinstall.
If you don't have Recovery Discs, you can try to change the hdd back to Basic by deleting the extra partition and booting with a utilty cd. The free version of Partition Wizard used to offer the ability to change from Dynamic to Basic-not sure if it still does.
Scroll down on the page and get Partition Wizard Bootable CD ISO and> ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd-a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. Once created, boot from it. Process to convert to Basic is HERE

  • Pavilion dv7 horizontal lines - Display going bad?

DV7-7025dx bought in 2012. Today, on boot, horizontal lines right from the moment I turn it on. Lines are so bad I can barely see anything. Booted into windows - lines still there. After a few minutes they cleared up. Powered down, removed battery, reset bios, rebooted. Still there. Is the display/adapter going bad?

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook and issues with the screen flickers and going pink and green. Here is a link to a document that will help you troubleshoot the image on screen flickers, has lines or distorted colors. Have you connected a monitor to the Notebook to check if it happens there as well? Here is a link on how to clean the fans as this could be an issue. If this does not display on the Monitor it could be a connection issue with the LCD screen or the inverter cable. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • IDT HD Audio stuttering 3d apps/games/tf2 - Windows 7 x64 - Pavilion dv7-4113tx

As per the rules I need to state:
I am a HP employee, my views/opinions/etc are my own and do not represent those of HP.
    This is cross-posted from freezes/lockups.
I would file some sort of bug report - but I wouldn't know where to start, I don't work in an area that has anything to do with manufacturing HP products; and this is my free time now  and I don't have intranet access .
I recently picked up a HP Pavilion dv7-4113tx Entertainment Notebook PC [ XV780PA ] for my personal use and overall it's been pretty good. It comes with windows 7 Home Premium x64 bit.
there is however an issue that I must bring up in regard to gaming, or i would assume any intensive 3d application, most notably Valve games, my test of choice is Team Fortress 2.
The game will work fine in native resolution - I get around 100-120fps but about every 30 seconds - 2 minutes, there is a audio/video stutter (by stutter, it will repeat the last .5 seconds of audio about 3-4 times in a loop while the screen will freeze on where the first audio stutter started), which will cause the game to 'freeze' for approximately 2 seconds and then continue where you left off.
Team fortress 2 is an incredibly time critical multiplayer online game, and this delay essentially means my e-death on multiple occasions.
I initially thought it was the graphics card, or the drivers - I upgraded the drivers to the latest on the ATI site, that increased my fps, but the stuttering was still there. After searching around on the internet a bit, i found a suggestion to disable the audio driver (device manager lists it as - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) as a test - so I did so.
The game purrs like a kitten - absolutely no stuttering. my score went up immediately
So, my next step was to try and get some Updated Drivers for the IDT Audio device (note, i cannot find a model name anywhere in the hp specs - or on the internet really) - I found out IDT themselves cannot release drivers, that these can only be obtained through OEMs.
    which brings me to here.
now - the closest I have found to the drivers I required are here:  IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7
Note: - it says on the page that they are 32 bit drivers - but I've found they work with the 64 bit version of windows.
these worked a little better - it fixed another annoying issue - the fact if you use the volume controls in a fullscreen application that it will switch back to the desktop to display the on screen slider bar of the volume going down (which was arguably redundant as windows 7 displays the speaker volume in the bottom right hand corner) - and it just turns the audio down as intended.
however - the stuttering is still very noticeably present .
I then tried to use the HP Support assistant  to run automated diagnostics and troubleshoot... which then downloaded the old drivers that gave me that fullscreen volume control issue back again - so i assume the original drivers.
So I installed the other drivers again.
My next test will be to use an external USB or firewire soundcard to see if this will allow me have games with sound.
Can an appropriate agent at HP please address this concern and notify when this bug will be fixed - IDT says they work with OEM's to fix issues regularly on the IDT link above.
I believe this is such an issue that will likely require a bug fix.

    Hi @trevevs
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help.
As you stated there is not any updated drivers for Windows 8.1 on the driver page for your notebook only for Windows 8.
This tells me that it is unsupported on your notebook as it has not been tested by HP.  This does not mean it will not work.

I grasp that all is working well except for the WiDi.  Have you done all your Windows updates?
Windows 8.1 has WiDi built into the Operating System.

  • PAVILION DV7 DISTORTED VIDEO ON SCREEN

Hi, everyone, this is my first session on this thing.
I wonder if anyone has the same problem with a Laptop Pavilion dv7,  while going through a switch-on, the screen is all distorted, you can-not make anything out.  At the beginning the distortion lasted for a minute or so and then I got good vision on the screen but now, just very bad distortion all of the time.  It looks like a chip has fried, or something like that.
It's a pitty, as the laptop looks very nice but it did cost about £800 about four years ago.  Is this a stock fault with the HP range?
I hope someone can answer the question for me, many thanks.

    Hi,
Problem could be related to display cable or could be graphics card related also. The best way to find out is by Connecting an external display like a Desktop monitor or high definition tv to the laptop and press Fn+F4.
Check the instructions from the link below to connect and external display and let me know the results..

Also refer to the link below for determining the issue..
HP Notebook PCs - Resolving Problems with Notebook Displays
Similar problems can occur in any type of laptops after 4 years to usage. Life of any notebook is between 3-4 years irrespective of the brand. Experiencing hardware problems after that is quite common . Though you might still come across few lucky ones that goes on for 7-8 years also but those are rarely able to compete with the newer technologies and applications.
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
