Glitches/dropout on burned DVD.  HELP!!

Hello all,
Great forum. Really hope someone can help.
My problem is that I have burned using DVDSP3 onto verbatim DVD-R using a superdrive.
On the finished product there are several glitches that look like dropout of some sort ie. blockey distortion. It only seems to effect the video and not audio. It also seems to happen near the end of the disk. I have buned several copies and each one has the same problem but at different points. This makes me think that it's the actuall type of DVD that I'm using as my output media. If so can anyone reccomend a type of DVD. I dont get this problem with simulator.
It's a live music concert so I haven't compressed the audio.
It's a big file - 4.3gb mpg2, 107mins approx.
Would this have anything to do with it.
Another quickie, is how much does AC-3 compression affect the audio in terms of file size and quality. What AC-3 setting should I use for optimum size/quality.
It's already late for release and I'm starting to loose my mind. Help!

Where do I reduce the data rate and what settings ahould I use for this?
I did mean to keep the vision as is, and just replace the sound with an .ac3, which would lower the overall data rate by about 1Mbps. I'd assumed you were about to try this! See lots of previous posts - search for 'bit rate too high' et c. Hopefully, this should mostly sort out your problem.
..been advised that it could be the burn speed set too high causing ..
Have a look at the thread burn speed
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=514623
...does the disk quality affect a final product?
Yes it does. Find a brand partly by trial & error for your burner; but do use a named branded product. Verbatim & Ritek are good starting points.

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • HELP! MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, and...

    Hi all
I noticed that there many of you have the same problem, but I really need some advice here, my MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, well actually occasionally it does recognise the DVDs then it burn but cannot write (on Toast), also in many other apps, like iDVD or DVDSP, it does run well on the first part of the burning but then failed at the end, with all kinda diff error msg. I have tried using many diff brands of disc too, inc verbatim.
So I borrowed my friends external DVD writer (actually a cheapy one with no brand), when I tried to burn using the external then an error msg comes up and says the writer cannot recognise the disc.
I dont wana get the MBP to repair but just wana get a external DVD writer to solve the problem, cos i need to use my computer and dont have a replacement mac, but now I am worry if the problem i now having is a system problem or just hardware, not sure if it is because the DVD writer i borrow is cheapy so it doesnt cope with mac, or just my MBP have system error that cant burn DVDs...
But my MBP can burn CDs so it is not a hardware problem? and if that is a system problem so even I buy a new DVD writer wont solve the problem?
btw, I have tried many solving methods like rewriting permission, reset PVRAM, etc
    PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HELP

I'm having the same problem you are on my 2.4GHZ Core2Duo MBP running 10.5.2. It will sometimes recognize DVDs, sometimes not... it chuggs and clunks and then spits the disc out. If i re-insert it a view times it will show up on the desktop. I get failures from Toast as well as iDVD. If i keep trying i have been able to burn files onto a disc with the finder, but then the burner fails during the verification. If put the disc back in the contents appear to be correct (after a quick look). Burning CD-Rs seems to be working fine, that with the occasional DVD write seems to point away from the HW. I am trying with both Memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-Rs...
I have tried the command/option-PR reset combo with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,

  • Unable to burn DVDs because I renamed the drive the project and burn files are on. Please help.

I am unable to burn DVDs because, not thinking, I renamed the external drive the project is on. How do I fix the problem in DVD Studio Pro 4? I changed the name back on the drive, the files show as linked, but it won't burn. I've tried to refresh the assets, didn't help. Relink is not available to try. I tried to go to file/advanced burn & build, but it was not available either. I'm new to all this so am very afraid to trash the preferences, not knowing if I'm going to do other harm.
    Thanks,
    Trish C

Reimport the files and drop them into the project.
    Your links should work.

  • I need help finding a program to burn dvds on my ibook

i have a hp dvd1040 external DVD burner, my ibook g4 reads it, and i can burn cd's,and watch dvds with it, but the program it came with to burn dvd's is only for windows, I'm looking for a free program that i can download but cant seem to find any, any suggestions? thanks!

Not sure about the capabilities of the HP external drive in question,
but with a variety of drives known to be supported in Mac OS X
for certain tasks, there are some freeware and shareware utilities.
One that may be helpful, if not in that case, in the general arena,
is this open-source Burn 1.721u freeware. It can do quite a bit:
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
It may be, the better type of external DVD recording device would
be a FireWire one; as they are generally better suited with Macs.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • PLEEEEEEASE HELP!!!!! Burning dvd problems

ok, i had the imac g4, and i was burning dvd's perfectly fine with it, using idvd. i'm using dvdxdv to transfer from my dvd recorder, put it in to imovie, then record off idvd. now my dvd's are incompatible with my dvd player.
do i need to use a different program to tranfer from dvd to my mac?
    what am i doing wrong?
    thanks

    Robert,
This really doesn't sound like an iDVD issue, but a disk burning issue. Don't be too surprised in going back to iDVD5 doesn't help.
Burning at a slower speed on other media is the first thing to try, along with a proper cleaning of your DVD burner.
But let's look at your image first. When you mount the image file and view it with the Apple DVD Player, does the video look good there? Or is it still jaggied?

  • PE3 crashes when I click "burn dvd". Any help, please?

Hello. My PE3 works just fine, except for one problem, that has plagued me for some time. When I finish editing, then complete the menu (title) page, I click "burn dvd". Invariably, PE closes. When I re-open the project and redo the menu- the forced closure didn't save the menu- it works fine, every time. I tried saving the project and re-opening before burning, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm running XP, Service Pack 3, with 2.80 GHz and 1 Gig of ram. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • I want to use my home dvd player to burn dvds/cds onto my MacBook Air. Please help!?

I want to use my home dvd player to burn dvds/cds onto my MacBook Air. I have an hdmi cord with thunderbolt connector. Where do I go from here?

Apps for OSX aren't in iTunes: they are in the App Store in your Applications folder. The payment method is the one registered in iTunes. There's no app actually called Yoga Studio, though there are several Yoga apps. There is an iOS app called Yoga Studio but it appears to have no OSX equivalent, though I haven't done a detailed search.

  • Plz help!  superdrive no longer burning DVD's...

Can't figure this out, but I've been burning DVD's successfully since I got the iMac Core Duo, but recently it's failing on every attempt using Toast 7.1 (the latest universal binary). I've contacted Roxio and they indicate that the particular error is a hardware error and has nothing to do with Toast. Here is the error message I get: "drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"
I am and have always been using the very highly rated Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's, and tried all speeds (1x,2x,4x,8x). In addition, I burn DVD's no problem with the same OS version (10.4.7) and Toast 7.1 on my MacBook without any issues.
Would greatly appreciate any ideas. I'm sure a firmware update might kick the drive into gear, but that of course raises a whole bunch of other issues and really shouldn't be necessary.

gave up... got a new iMac

  • Poor quality sound on burned DVD - Any help?

    Hello,
I am experiencing the following problem: I export videos from Premiere Pro as m2v and wav, repectively. I import them in Encore and let Encore transcode the wav file into AC3. In the preview on the computer, the sound seems OK. When I play the DVD on a set-top player, the sound quality is very poor.
I tried to use PCM encoding in Encore and the result was the same. Any solution? Do I have to look for another AC3 encoder? From what I gathered searching this forum, the encoder in Encore should work fine.

Thank you Stan and Bill for taking time to reply.
I did some tests and here's what I found:
When I play the burned DVD in my computer (using Power DVD) the sound is acceptable. The problem might be that the set-top DVD player/recorder  (Panasonic), or the sound system in my TV set, or a combination of both, are too sensitive to the quality of the sound track. There are no sound problems with the system however when playing commercial DVD or a DVD recorded with the Panasonic recorder. I re-edited the movie in Premiere and I exported audio as AC3 with the SurCode encoder, using all the free trials (the DVD had 3 timelines). I burned a DVD with this sound file and the quality was significantly improved when played on the same system. Conclusion: It seems the Encore AC3 encoder is not of the same quality as the SurCode. Are you of the same opinion?
    Thanks again,
    Harry.

  • Can't Burn DVD - keep getting "Error during rendering/encoding"...Help!

I have a new IMac computer with Leopard and I'm having problems burning DVDs. I created a project using IDVD and have audio and pictures (imported individually from Iphoto) that I created into slideshows. I'm try to burn my final copy and continue to receive the "Error during rendering/encoding" message. I looked at earlier threads and saw some people had success when saving it first to a disk image however when I attempted to do that I received the same error. I know I have plenty of memory space since this project is very small. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have a new mac with Leopard since a week, and I had the same problem ("error during rendering / encoding..."). This happened when burning to a disk image.
    I tried a lot of things :
    * very small project
    * create a new user
    * put pictures in a folder, and not drag them from iphoto
    * change the theme
I still had the same problem.
The last thing I tried was to put all the files used by idvd on the hard disk (instead of of an external firewire disk).
It worked ! (with the small size project).
I'm trying to burn the large project again...
I will tell you if it succeeds...
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

  • Burned DVD Errors

Is it too much trouble, for a DVD to burn in DVD studio pro, and...I don't know....acctually play back on other DVD players without problems?
    Sigh.....here we go again.
Ok, so I have a 23 minute movie, that I'm exporting from Final Cut Pro.....into DVD Studio Pro. I've allready built up the menus, and burned several DVD's of this project, which appear to load up fine on an external DVD player....at first glance anyway.
Its only after you play it, that you realize that its dropping frames, glitching out, and eventually freezing completly around the 18 minute mark.
So, I've been doing the old "bit rate shuffle", scaling back to around a 3.0 bit rate and a 5.0 max bit rate in DVD Studio Pro.....and that helped a little, but its still locking up.
So, instead of exporting a Quicktime movie directly out of Final Cut Pro, I tried going through Compressor (using the basic "DVD: 90 minutes, best quality" settings, only I dropped the average and maximum bit rate on the video to 4.0 & 7.0, respectivly).
I did that, and burned a new copy.....and now it won't even get out of the main menu without locking up.
So now, I'm completly stuck. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
Can please, someone....anyone.....tell me what I'm doing wrong?
(Is there a proper setting, of bit rate, max bit rate, etc.....that will result in a burned DVD that should be compatible with most DVD players, without sacrificing too much quality?)
Just in case its helps, I'm using:
    * Verbatim DVD-R discs.
    * Final Cut Pro 5.0.1
    * DVD Studio Pro 4
    Thanks in advance, guys.

    Hi Panic:
    Wellcome to the forums !
Most probably your problem is related with your disc audio format. Uncompressed audio (AIFF/PCM) is one of the most common causes of playback issues of DVD-R in standalone players. The bitrate of the uncompressed audio it's too high for some players.
For a 23 min movie you can use the standard DVD: high quality 90 min settings aplying the MPEG2 and the Dolby 2 (AC3) presets. Encoding your movie inside DVDSP gives AIFF audio, and when you used Compressor you didn't mention encoding your audio to AC3.
You can duplicate the standard AC3 preset and change these settings to keep your original audio level:
    - Dialig Normalization: -31
    - Compression preset: None
If you want to try a second video encoding option, you can duplicate the standatd MPEG2 90 min preset and change it to CBR encoding:
A last point, you can control your burn speed building first your project and creating a Disc Image in your drive and burning the discs outside DVDSP. Read this tutorial: Creating Disc Image in DVDSP.
    Hope that helps !
