Glitchy 2009 24 inch iMac

Our 24 inch 2009 iMac is super glitchy between being extremely slow and random freezes of the screen with strange patterns like random lines of black and noise or (my favorite) a  black triangle formed by a diagonal from upper right to lower left corner with the area below the line black and the rest of the screen just as it was before it froze.  Any ideas or do we just have to trash it. additional info: running Mavericks; and activity monitor did not show anything overusing the CPU.

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

  • Is there any way to use a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac as an external screen for an early 2011 MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to work out if there is any way that I can use my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac (running OS X 10.6.8; mindisplay port) as an external or second monitor when connected to my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8; thunderbolt).
From what I've read online, I gather that I cannot simply connect the two with a minidisplay port to thunderbolt cable, as the iMac does not support target display mode. I know I can 'share screens', but this doesn't give me much of an improvement on size compared to just using my MacBook.
Are there any other potential work arounds I might have missed? Any suggestions (or even conclusive answers to suggest I'm wasting my time by continuing to think about it!) would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

Sorry but no, you are asking about Target Display Mode and the 2009/2010 21.5" iMacs did not support that, only the 27" iMacs did. You can read up on TDM in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Will windows 8 work on a late 2009 27 inch iMac

    I have a late 2009 27 inch iMac,  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM
I recently upgraded to Yosemite, 10.10.2
I have previously run Windows XP in Bootcamp
I need to upgrade my Windows because my banking software upgrade no longer works with XP
    The questions:
Am I limited to which Windows I can get, 7.8. 8.1?  Will any of these work?
A few weeks ago I used a link I came across while browsing the Apple support page on this topic, it analyzed my machine and recommended that I get Windows 7, 32 bit
But I see that the new Bootcamp 5.1 will only run 64 Bit
So which Windows should I buy,?   7,8,8.1?   and 32 or 64 Bit?
And what Windows drivers might I have on my machine with Yosemite or be able to upgrade to?
Windows is not cheap, so I do not want to buy something that will not work

Windows 8 will not work on your iMac. Please refer to the Boot Camp system requirements, System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support, to see which Windows will work with Boot Camp and your computer. With respect to drivers, Boot Camp Assistant will provide a link to download the correct drivers.
Alternatively, instead of using Boot Camp, you can use a virtual machine such as Parallels or Fusion to install any version of Windows on your computer. Virtual hardware and drivers are used if using a virtual machine.

  • Late 2009 21.5 Inch iMac not updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.4

I recently took my Late 2009 21.5-inch iMac (1TB HD) to the Apple Store to get it fixed due to a hard drive crash. I got the hard drive replaced and I thought everything was back to normal. Today, I saw Apple had released a beta for FaceTime on the Mac. I downloaded this, started to install it, and it told me I was missing a critical security patch (2010-005). I ran software update, and it said all my software was up to date, so I went to apple.com and downloaded it directly. It started to install and when I got to the hard disk destination, it told me that my hard drive (Macintosh HD) doesn't meet the system requirements. Well, I looked up the requirements, and the only requirement was Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I went into about my mac from the Apple menu and saw that I was running 10.6.3. This confused me further because I had run software update, and I suspected software update would catch an OS update. Anyway, I went to apple.com to download Snow Leopard 10.6.4 directly since software update didn't catch it. I choose the combo pack first, and I didn't have any luck installing it. It did the exact same thing the security update did. I got to the hard disk destination, and it told me the volume didn't meet the requirements. I then tried the regular update and got the same results. Starting to get confused, I checked what the requirements were for Snow Leopard 10.6.4. The only requirement was to have Snow Leopard 10.6.3. This is where I don't understand what's happening. I am already running 10.6.3. Since that was the only requirement, shouldn't I be able to install it? Please help me out. I'm SUPER confused. Oh and sorry if I'm rambling a little. I'm trying to be as descriptive as possible to get this fixed. Thanks in advance.

Alright. I finally got 10.6.4 installed. I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install disk like originally planned. The problem was that when Apple replaced my hard drive, they preinstalled a Mac Mini version of Snow Leopard on to it which was up to date for that piece of hardware and is why software update didn't catch the update. However, since I have an iMac, it got confused because it was running a Mac Mini version of OS X, thus not letting me install 10.6.4. After I wiped the drive and installed from the disk, I ran software update, and, sure enough, the 10.6.4 update was there. I thought I would just share my findings for everyone out there with the same problem. And thank you baltwo for all of your help. I appreciate it.

  • Audio quality in Windows low (Early 2009 24-inch iMac)

    Hi,
I've got the new 24-inch iMac (3.06 gHz and ATI graphics),
and the sound in Windows seems to be much lower quality (it sounds hollow) than the sound in Mac OS X (it's a little like the boot sound which sounds awful).
I installed the Boot Camp drivers.
Is anyone else having this "problem" and can anything be done about it?

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • HT3924 Using  a 27-inch iMac (Mid 2012) as an external display?

As I have been using MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) and Mac Air (Mid 2011) for business purpose, I wanna use them working at home.
I really expected that there was new cinema display with Retina display, but there wasn't. However, New iMac looks really nice & I would love to buy it.
But Using a 27-inch iMac(Mid 2012) as an external display is one of my important required function to buy it.
What do you think? is a 27-inch iMac (Mid 2012) able to use target display mode?

there's a lot of misinformation so far here. Yes you can use all the 27-inch iMacs as external displays.
    However there a few problems.
2009-2010 27-inch iMacs can only work with Apple computers that have the Mini-DisplayPort.
2011-2012 21-inch and 27-inch iMacs can only work as a display with Macs that have thunderbolt ports.
so as long as your 2011 MBA has thunderbolt, the new one will do fine. your 2010 MBP will not be able to use the iMac as a display.

  • What should I set me screen resolution to in photoshop CC with my late 2009 27" iMac?

What should I set me screen resolution to in photoshop CC with my late 2009 27" iMac?

If its native resolution is 2560x1440 then some people do find it marginal with a 27 inch screen, but I'd have thought it workable if you know where everything is.  People are using that screen res on tiny laptops, but to be fair, they are not much liking it with Photoshop.
I don't know how Retina support works with CC, but I wonder if you could force it on your iMac?
Any Mac users out there know how Retina support works?

  • My late-2009 27inch iMac just died

My late-2009 27 inch iMac just died. Or something
I was working with iPhoto, trying to crop a photo, and the curser worked but that affected nothing on the screen.
So, I tried to FORCE QUIT with the keyboard, and nothing.
So, I held the ON button down until the computer shut down.
Then, sadly. It will not start.
I unplugged it, waited 10 minutes, plugged it and tried to turn it on again, nothing. Does not respond to the ON button.
    Help?

Out of the black, it started up again.
    Thanks anyway.

  • HT3924 using a 24 inch imac as a monitor

Can I use a 24 inch (early 2009) Imac as an additional display with the latest (2013) Imac??

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Only 27-inch iMacs and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as a monitor. However, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your 24-inch iMac as a monitor, but it works through the network, so it will be slow

  • Upgrade 2009 27" iMac's Graphics Card?

    Hello All
I have read many confusing posts about upgrading graphics cards in iMacs but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer yet as to whether i can do this.
    I have a Late 2009 27-inch iMac (model iMac10,1) with ATI Radeon HD 4670 256mb graphics.
I just need to know if it is possible before I buy a card and begin the tedious process of taking the computer apart, and which cards will work and are available for purchase.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    xeni

The processor is integral with and soldered to the logic board. It cannot be changed. You would ahve to get aq new logic boarda nd that is a significant portion of the cost of new uprated iMac with the specs you want.
The word is that Apple will only replace a defective GPU card with the same type and capacity, so I doubt they will help. Also the iMac does not use the common GPU cards as used in tower computers. It is a proprietary format with a crazy heat sink system:

  • Color calibrating 27 inch iMac display

    A few months, ago I purchased a used 2009 27 inch iMac.
After a lengthy move and recnt medical isues, I am back t work doing some design work.
I need to color calibrate my this iMAc 27 inch screen and use Monaco Easy Color with screen colorimeter.
I used this on my old G4 system that used a matte screen instead of a glossy screen like on this iMac.
I need to know what lighting conditions and how to setup my iMac's screen to use/setup to get the colorimeter device and software to accurately color calibrate my iMac's screen.
I am do my design work using Adobe CS3, Painter 11, Blender and to do some technical drawing work using a CAD program for the Mac.
I am, preferably, looking for answers from people experienced with using monitor calibration software and specifically using the Monaco Optix hardware and software to create a profile.
Help is greatly apprecated and any useful links helpful.
Thanks to everyone who responds in advance.

I just bought a 27 inch Imac a few hours ago.
If it were me, for a brand new hours-old machine, I would demand (not ask) for a replacment (not fixed) from wherever you bought it from.  For the prices of these things I wouldn't tolerate that.
In the meantime try smc and pram reset and see what happens.

  • Can I use 21.5-inch iMac as an external monitor?

    I have an ASUS laptop.
Does this iMac support to be an external monitor to display the content in my laptop?

No, only some 27" models support DisplayPort Input.

  • Can I use 24 inch imac as a monitor?

I have an "old" 24inch iMac. (Purchased maybe 2009?)
And i recently bought another one, macPro.
So i will not use my old iMAc as an prior computer.
But i still like the large size monitor that my old one has.
Is there any solution that i can use this big buddy as a monitor?
As I researched, only 27inch iMac or later version can be used as a monitor if i use thunderbold cable.
If anyone has a good solution, can be a program, or upgrading whatever, Please let me know.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
As you said, Target Display mode is only supported in Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and in Mid 2011 and newer iMacs, so you cannot use your iMac as a display for your Mac Pro directly.
However, there is an app called ScreenRecycler that allows you to use the iMac as an external display for the Mac Pro by using your network. This is the only possibility, so I recommend you to give it a try

  • Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?

Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?
My CPU fan defaults to 3000RPM.  I can rev the fan higher with 3rd party Fan controllers, but no lower than 3K.

OR you can short out the original temp sensor, to make the fans rev at quieter speeds.
You can also install an optical temp sensor in place of the old one, it will still read temps and adjust the fans accordingly, just not as good as an internal sensor.
    Use something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-922-9229-Cable-Temp-Sensor-Optical-iMac-27-inch-Late -2009-2010-/111106349896

  • I have an 2009 27inch imac and a 2012 macbook pro

Hi... I have an 2009's 27inch imac and a 2012 macbook pro. Can I use the imac as an external monitor? If so, what is the cable to connect both?
    Tnks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs can be used as external displays for other Macs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Your iMac has got Mini DisplayPort, so you can use it as an external display for your Thunderbolt Mac. You only have to get a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect both Macs, and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac to enable Target Display mode.
