Glitchy Album Art-Maybe Only in Coverflow?

When I updated iTunes to 7.3.2 I started having problems with album art.
My 3 Death Cab cds have 7 spots in coverflow (223) and I don't know why. In my iPod it comes up as one album or one artist, and I shift-clicked the different albums to insure that the information was the same on all the songs (short of the title, of course). However, this is the only band that I've had this problem with.
I don't know what else I can do at this point, any suggestions?

  • Album Art Resizing Itself In Coverflow

The majority of my album art is 600x600, but some is rectangular (e.g., 600 wide x 540 tall). This afternoon, I noticed that some, but not all, of this rectangular artwork is being resized when iTunes is in coverflow view: the height of some of the album covers that appear in coverflow are being stretched so that they appear as square rather than rectangular.
The same art is also distorted when I view art in the artwork column and in grid view.
However, the proportions of the affected artwork is correct when viewed with
    • iTunes' artwork viewer (in the lower lefthand corner)
    • on my second generation iPod nano
    • on my iPhone 3G's iPod app (in coverflow and otherwise)
    • in the Remote app
    • and, if I open one of the album covers and view it in its own window, it appears in the correct dimensions.
The artwork also looks correct in the summary tab and the artwork tab when I "Get Info." If I copy one of the affected album covers and open it with Preview, its dimensions will be correct.
I can discern no pattern as to which images are being resized. Some art images I have scanned myself and some I have downloaded.
I have no idea what might have triggered this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is an addendum to my original post, including a cumbersome "fix," and a working hypothesis as to the root of the problem.
(In my original post, I had neglected to update my signature to note that my current OS is 10.6.4.)
Last night, I extracted the artwork of the nonstandard covers (I'll call "standard" artwork that which is 600x600, as well as other art of that 1:1 ratio).
Assuming that the width of all the nonstandard artwork was 600 pixels, the affected artwork was that which was 540 high and higher. Nonstandard artwork that still appears normally is 539 and shorter. The 600/540+ (bad) vs. 600/539- (good) appears to be a ratio that affects artwork of smaller sizes as well. For example, a file that was 467 pixels in width that was "too high" (420) would also be affected. (I have some artwork that is smaller than 600 pixels, but none is larger, so while I assume larger images will be affected, I don't know for certain.)
When I extracted a 600x540 file and resized (or rescaled) it to 600x539 and then embedded the new art, coverflow displayed the artwork correctly. I have done this for all the affected artwork and this has "fixed" the problem.
(I've read that a number of people are currently having problems adding artwork so, for the record, I copy an image open in Preview and, then, in iTunes, I "get info" for the files to which I want to add artwork and then paste the artwork into the artwork box seen in the "Multiple Item Information" window.)
However, this only fixed the problem for view in coverflow. It did not fix the grid view. Those files were still being stretched until I "jiggled" the size of album covers in grid view. I slid the sizing bar back and forth, to make the albums first larger and then smaller, and then I eased the size back to its original position (in my case, as large as the grid view will render four albums in one row before they become three to a row). So, no kidding, once I shook iTunes, grid view worked again.
Armed with this information, I sat down with a similar system (my wife's), another 13" Macbook running 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2.1, and I attempted to replicate the problem; her iTunes library is unique but contains some of the same music files with the same artwork that had appeared distorted on my system. Two careful examinations of the music library had not shown any distortion to this system's extant artwork but, when I added nonstandard artwork of the problematic ratio (and files that had said artwork) I saw the same problem on my wife's computer that I seen on mine.
I can offer the following additional information:
12 May 2010 is the last known date on which I embedded a file with "problematic" artwork that displayed said artwork properly in coverflow.
On 26 July, I extracted a nonstandard artwork image, touched it up, and embedded that "airbrushed" art into the music files. This is the album cover that I first noticed to be stretched. However, while I noticed it yesterday afternoon, I do not recall noticing it on the morning of the 26th, when the new artwork was added. (And this does not necessarily mean anything; I may have been inattentive.)
While wrangling with that album cover yeterday and trying to get it to display properly, I did not notice a problem with any other album cover (but I did not look methodically). After wrestling with that album and failing, I quit iTunes, tossed the album art cache in the trash, and rebuilt. It was at that point at which I noticed distorted artwork en masse.
I am open to other ideas, but my working hypothesis is that, at some point in time, within the last week or the past two months, iTunes (by which I mean the most current version of iTunes on a Macbook running the most current version of Snow Leopard) has become incapable of caching these nonstandard images. The extant thumbnails of the "problem covers" were fine, but once I tossed them into the trash and iTunes needed to reconstruct them, mayhem ensued.
Even though I have hit upon a workaround for our computers and will avoid adding problematic art to our iTunes libraries, I'd still be curious to know what's behind the problem and if there is an easier fix than the one I found, which is not a fix inasmuch as it's the "don't move your arm like that" when your arm hurts solution.
For what it's worth and thanks in advance,
    N.

  • Album art "blacked out" in coverflow

I am seeing some strange behavior from Coverflow on my new iPhone. Occasionally an albums artwork will show up as all black. Additionally, sometimes I will be able to see the cover in the cover "lineup" if i scroll a few albums over, but once i get to the cover in question, it disappears. Conversely I have seen this happen where the "lineup" cover isn't visible, but once I get to the album the artwork appears.
i always add my album art one of these two ways.
    1) Include it in the ID3 tag by using Tag & Rename software.
    2) Open the Info while browsing my iPhone in iTunes and attach it.
I know people have had problems with artwork by having iTunes find it or by adding it via the preview window. I am not doing that in this case. Here is my phone info.
    iPhone: 3G 16gb
    iPhone Software: 2.1
    Sync: Manual
    OS: Windows

I'm having the exact same issue with my 16gb iPhone unfortunatley I got the iPhone only a few days ago and updated to 2.1 before I put music/album art on there so I can't tell if it's happening just for 2.1 or firmware before this.
I also own an ipod touch 8gb which I am not willing to try updating album art to in case the same thing happens, but all art on there is working ok. but I do know same albums and cover art have been use for both devices.
In the few days I have been searching for an answer, no one has been able to give an answer to what's happening but I seriously don't think it's an issues with my pc/music/album art if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.
My setup is exactly the same as spicymeat's:
    iPhone: 3G 16gb
    iPhone Software: 2.1
    Sync: Manual
    OS: Windows XP

  • Album art shows only for Now Playing, not Selected

Don't know if this is an iTunes problem or an iPod connection issue. I just reformatted my computer and installed the latest iTunes version. Since there's no music on my harddrive yet, I'm playing my iPod Classic from the computer. The album art is behaving oddly - it only shows in the lower corner display for the Now Playing track. If I click on another track, the Selected art box says Drag Artwork Here, and yet when I go to the file info, the art is there. This happens even for a song I played earlier - if it's not the currently playing song, even if it's on the same album, the art doesn't display. It's the same whether it's an album bought from the iTunes store, from another vendor, or ripped from a CD. Obviously the art is still there, but why isn't it displaying like it did before the reinstall?
(As a side note, if I play the iPod separately from the computer, the art displays just fine.)

nvm, I called apple and fixed it! Thanx!!!!

  • Album Art extremely glitchy

So I've been facing two problems with my album art:
    1. Whenever I have a song bluetoothed to my phone, if it doesn't come with album art, my phone chooses the most recent photo that I had blueoothed and sets it as the album art for the song. Is there any way to stop this? Also, sometimes the app is so set on that photo that it won't let me change it (whether it be me replacing it or just trying to get the default album art.)
    2. If I try to change it (and by some miracle it does change), the album art is only 1/4 there. The app only shows the top of the image and the rest is just black. Are the photos I'm using too large for the app (they seem fine to me) or is it something else?
    Thanks in advance!

If the track doesn't have album art then it never did ie: It was never embedded into the track, However you can use an app called cover art downloader to add images or you could transfer the track to a Pc and use mp3tag to embed images into the track

  • Transferring Album Art from a Mac to a PC

I have iTunes on both my Mac and Windows PC- with the same library on both.
I used Curator which found all my missing album art - it only works on the Mac.
After spending a day doing this I tried copying the Album Art folder from my Mac to my Windows PC hoping to see all my album art on my windows machine.
This did not work. I still have the same missing album covers.
I tried removing all Album Art from my PC (by selecting "Clear Downloaded Artwork" and then I selected all my music and chose "Get Album Artwork".
This put back all my original album art but none of the new artwork downloaded by Curator.
Does anyone know how to sucessfully transfer album art between a Mac and PC?
(I posted this question on the Windows board but got no replies-sorry for double posting, but maybe I'll have more luck with the Mac forum)

Diane is correct — the artwork you downloaded is embedded in the music files, so the only way to transfer the art is by transferring the files. Is there a reason you don't want to just copy your entire iTunes library from the Mac to the PC?
I don't know why dragging the artwork into the artwork box would result in a lower-quality image. What do you see when you click on the artwork box to open a full-size version? Is the picture 300x300 or better?

  • Ios6 and album art

When I downloaded the ios 6, only some of my album art is present. I tried to sync with itunes but still no luck, missing lots of album art. Weird enough, when I do horizontal view, its all there...vertical view, only about half of it

OK so I have been able to come up with a solution that worked for me, for the most part. Here it is:
    1) Find an album in my iPod Touch with missing art in coverflow
    2) Download the missing art from the internet, unless I already have it
    3) Open iTunes and find the album in my music library
    4) Highlight every track in the album
    5) Right click>get info
    6) Double click the box named "Artwork" on bottom right
    7) Finder will open. Locate the art I downloaded and select "open". Click ok.
    8) Sync iPod.
The album art now appears in coverflow mode again and stays there.
**Here is the problem: For songs missing artwork that are individual and not part of an album, when I click "get info", the "artwork" box doesnt show up, and I cant use the method described above.
Here is what I did for those:
    1) Download the art for the track with art that doesnt show up in coverflow
    2) Locate the track with missing art in iTunes library
    3) Right Click>get info
    4) Click the "artwork" tab
    5) Delete the art thats there
    6) Add the art I just downloaded
    7) Sync
After that they were all there in my coverflow except for 2 songs that are individual. I can't seem to fix them no matter what. All my art has been restored and viewable in coverflow now except for 2 songs. I can live with that for now.
I have 495 albums and a total of 2,835 songs so it wasnt too bad for me since my library isnt that massive. Only about 19GB

  • Album art not showing consistently on iPhone *lockscreen*

iTunes occasionally has trouble with album art, especially after syncs or updates (album art disappearing, or being reshuffled to the wrong mp3s, etc.).
The current problem is different. Normally, with the iPhone's (iPod) music playing, the album art will replace the wallpaper on the lock screen. Lately, this feature has stopped being consistent. Some tracks will display album art on the lock screen, some won't. Those that won't, do have album art embedded (100% certain of this). In one instance, the album art displayed was a mishmash of two different albums' art (again, only on the lock screen). Editing the mp3s to reinsert the album art in iTunes, and then re-syncing, has not solved the problem.
This is probably an issue with how iTunes is handling/editing those mp3s affected, or it may be an iPhone bug. There's nothing outstanding about the specific tracks in question - in every other way they appear to be normal (write enabled, and album art showing in track info).
This problem only occurs @ the lock screen. In iPod view, and album view, display of the album art is normal for all tracks.
I have noticed this also happening with other audio sources (ie, third party audio streaming apps, which normally show some kind of album art @the lock screen).
    Thanks for any feedback.

I too have been having this issue & I've read the articles, advices & other discussions, but none of them fixes this issue. I reboot & still see the wrong album art on the lock screen. It is very annoying especially when you have iTunes with software that was purchased to "automajically" present the correct album artwork. For those of us who actually precise about how our libraries are organized this is a big deal. You spends hours days in keeping things organized, just for the sync to not resemble the labor...
I have both the iPhone 4 & an iPod Touch 2nd gen. You'd think Apple would get stuff like this together before approving it for an update. No one can convince me different... Apple & Windows now both have the same MO! Get a new team of testers.

  • Won't display Album Art while playing music and the screen is Locked

So what's happening is that while I'm playing music and I lock the iPod, it won't display the album art. Only my wallpaper, which is one of the wallpapers that come with the iPod.

    Reboot fixed it

  • Get Album Art: What Will Happen?

I have a very large iTunes music collection almost all of which album art.
I've always been afraid to use the "Get Album Art" function of iTunes because I assumed it would replace all my existing album art. Two questions:
    1) Is this true?
    2) Is there a way to make it get album art for only a single album rather than for the whole library?

It won't replace the artwork if you already have something there. If you ctrl-click on a song you have an option to get album artwork for that one song. or from the same menu you can go to 'Get Info' and there is an artwork that you can manually place the images into. hope that helps

  • How to restore album art?

We had a storm here one night, the power got knocked out and my ipod was sitting in it's docking station. When I rebooted, the ipod asked me to set it's language settings, etc. again.
As it is now, it appears to only of screwed up my album art, which only shows a little dot now where the cover would of been. I REALLY (make that REEEEALLLLLLLLLYYYYYYY) do not want to do a restore and copy all my 30 GB of songs back onto it.
Is there some way to just rebuild the artwork db on the ipod?
    TIA

I don't think so...Although it'd be a hassle to load all 30GB of songs, it would be your safest and smartest choice to restore your iPod to factory settings and then go from there, though I can't guarantee that 100%.

  • Cd ripper with album art support?

well, im having another irritation, in the couple months that i've been swtching over/migrating to linux, the transitions been easy enough after working with fedora and ubuntu to get my feet in the water. the large user base of those 2 distros definitely helped me find alternative programs for everything
but one thing i can't seem to find is a program to rip my cd's to mp3 and add album art. maybe i've taken one too many calls working zune supprot for someone whining about album art, its getting to me
i found this one but its for rox desktop, and i have no idea what that is mostly. i use kde, got comfortable with it. right now im ripping with kaudiocreator but then when i bring it into amarok, i have to paste my album art.
so im looking for a ripper that just does it for me

What do you mean by paste the album art when you bring it into Amarok?  Amarok downloads the cover art for my albums from Amazon and it couldn't really be much easier since I'd still need to check it was getting the correct artwork even if it was integrated with my music ripper.

  • Album art displays in ITunes but not on iPod for some album

Hi, I have setup album art on iTunes for my ipod, and in itunes all the art shows correctly.
However the iPOD just displays album art for only some of the albums, not all...
This is really frustrating Apple. How can I report or fix this problem?
    Thanks
    Simon

I have THE EXACT same problem. Except, I added all album art by hand, to my ipod playlist after hand-selecting all 356 songs to my nano. Only to find that when I attempted to transfer the album art to my nano even after checking and unchecking the album art option, it does not work. Does anyone know if the album art needs to be added to itunes before songs are put onto the nano?

  • Yet another missing album art question...

OK, I just received my second 80 GB Apple ipod Classic. The first one was defective out of the box and this (these?) is (are?) my first ipod. I'd heard all the horror stories about itunes and since I have other media players, ripping and tagging utilities I'm happy with, I really have no intention of using itunes for anything more then updating my ipod and manually synching my music.
I do have one question though. How do I get album art to display for my music? First of all, I unchecked every option in itunes that I could find about updating missing data and downloading album art. I even unchecked the box under My ipod that says "show album art" (maybe mistakenly thinking that was referring to synching album art. All of my mp3's are tagged properly and have the album art, scanned by me from my actual discs embedded in the file in the album art tag. I would think these should display if the ipod is capable of displaying album art, regardless of any checkboxes I've fooled with in itunes but all I get on my ipod are little gray boxes with black musical note symbols in them.
What did I do wrong? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

That's indeed the reason your album art doesn't show on the iPod. Check this box, maybe resync, and the iPod should show the images you embedded in the mp3-files.

  • More starnge album art on my 16g

for some reason my album art for music has been replaced by random podcast album art?
however in coverflow mode all of my music album art is correct, but as soon as I turn my ipod touch upright/portrait the album art changes to podcast art?
if I turn the ipod landscape then the music art returns?
    very strange

I've experienced something similar. Coverflow seems to get its artwork from that embedded in the first track of an album. So if you have other or no artwork in subsequent tracks, when you're listening to those tracks you'll see the other artwork or the black screen with the musical note icon on it.
(This info is for Windows - not sure how you do the equivalent of a right-click on your Mac, sorry!)
The easiest remedy is to play track one of the affected album, then drag the cover art from the bottom left onto your desktop. Now select all tracks on the album, right click and select 'Get Info' and then drag the cover art off the desktop into the 'Artwork' box on the right hand side.
Then resync your Ipod Touch and all should be well.
