Global Application Settings? Mail calls wrong browser, etc

I don't understand what determines which app is called when I click on a URL in an email? It still brings up Firefox even though I use only Opera now. And in Finder I have .html files set to open with TextWrangler, so why is that different?
And in Opera when I click on an email address, it insists on bringing up its own email client rather than Mail.
How are App preferences set globally?

E61 Open Link from Mail launches wrong browser

Hi,
I've just noticed that, when following a web link from within an email received on my POP3 account, the phone lauches the basic web browser (i.e. the 'Services' application) rather than the more advanced 'Web' application - surely the page should be opened in the new clever browser with mini-map etc.??
This may be just another T-Mobile only issue - my details below:

Seems ridiculous really - there must be a way to configure which application is launched, just its not accessible to us plebs!
I'm really starting to wish I'd bought a windows based phone, while the E61 is very good in many ways, I'm getting fed up with all th faults I keep coming across... especially when some of these are so basic.
Given we've now had >4 years of Series 60 based phones, should we still be seeing these sillies?

Mail picks wrong browser

When there's a web link in an email message Mail opens Firefox to view it in. Not that Firefox isn't a worthy browser, but I'd rather have it open in Safari. How do I make that happen. I can't find anywhere in either the Mail prefs or the Firefox prefs that would fix that. Thanx.

Go into Safari's preferences/General and the first pull down is where you can choose the default browser.

FileVault Bug - default application settings

When i activate FileVault, the system resets the 'default application settings', such as default browser, and defaults as to what applications open what file types, after reboot. So when i choose Firefox as my default Webbrowser, after one reboot Safari is the default broswer!
This is very bad for people those want not use Safari or Mail etc...!
Is there any work around?

I changed my AppleID/Password and now am locked out of iCloud. iCloud says maximum number of free accounts have been activated. tried Settings, Mail etc but iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete it and start again.

Had to change Apple ID/Password recently now cannot access iCloud. In settings when tapping iC, log in screen appears with old ID and request for (old) password.
In Settings Mail, Contacts etc iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete account.
Trying new ID/Password message appears "maximum no. of free accounts have been activated".
Using old ID/Password message apperas "you can,t sign in because account was disabled for security reasons ......reset password at iforgot.apple.com which i did.
Can anybody help please??

I tried to log in to iCloud but a message appears telling me I "can't sign in because my account was disabled for security reasons....reset password at iforgot.apple.com". I don't know why this happened.
I reset both my Apple ID and password.
When I tap Settings iCloud is listed on the left side between General and Mail, Contacts etc.
Tapping iCloud brings up a log in screen for iCloud which shows my old Apple ID and requests the password. If I put the password in I get the message as above.
If I use the new Apple ID/Password I get the message "the maximum number of free accounts have been activated....
In settings there is no option to "Delete Account"
Any suggestions??

After installing Firefox again, I wanted to get back my settings, bookmarks etc. by syncronising with Firefox Sync but accidentaly settings from a fresh browser

After formatting the partition and installing Firefox again, I wanted to get my settings, bookmarks etc. back by syncronising with Firefox Sync but accidentaly settings from a fresh browser was uploaded and now I cannot have the browser the way I used to have. Is there any way to reverse this changes?

First check that you still have data in your sync account.
Firefox button > Options > Sync > Manage Account
It should tell you how much data is stored in the account. Is there any?
If there is still data in the sync account then you can follow the instructions in this article [[What is Firefox Sync?]]. Refer to the 'How much of my data is synced?' section. Change the option to 'Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data'.
I hope that works for you.
If there is no data in your sync account you will be able to get it back by syncing from another computer. Just make sure that the settings on that computer are not replaced by the blank account again. You can use the 'Replace all other devices with this computer's data' option to prevent this.
Please note that Firefox Sync is designed only to sync details between devices not as an online backup tool. If you are formatting a partition it is generally best to backup your profile folder along with any other data. See [[Managing profiles]] for more detail.

Best way to manage global application data

Hello,
I'm looking for the best way to manage my global application data. I have a program containing about 70 application settings which are loaded from an ini file and organised as clusters and loose variables. I want to be able to use these settings across multiple vi's. The application settings can be modified during execution. Some vi's can change settings and these changes need to be visible accros all vi's.
What is the best way to manage this. Ideally, I would have one cluster or class containing all the application settings but since the sub vi's run independend, I can't wire them through.
From what I've read so far, global variables ain't really well suited for this due to race conditions. The FGV might be a solution but it is not clear to me how to implement this for many variables. (One FGV or multiple FGV's, etc... Does anyone have a good example of this?)
Are there any other good solutions? Any advice is welcome!

You can also create a singleton LVOOP object (maybe a few if you want to logically organize your settings). When you initialize the system you create the object and it uses a DVR internally to store your data. Since this is a singleton object you do not need to wire it through your code. Your subVIs simply call the appropriate methods and it will interact with the class data. A FGV is basically the same thing except that you only have a single VI so you are more limited with your inputs and outputs. A singleton object let's you refine the connector pains based on the methods and what they are doing.

What's the best way of storing (configurable) application settings.

I'm developing an application that has a few dozen settings, which have a default value at installation time, however they may be changed at execution time.
The settings will not be set by the application directly itself, instead it provides an API which independant client applications can use to change the settings.
One client will be a debug/test GUI to view and set the settings.
Another client will be a sort of monitoring program that is able to receive setting updates sent to the device by some mechanism (i.e. HTTP or OTA etc.). When it receives the setting changes it will call the application API to change the settings.
My first question is
- in general what is a good mechanism for storing these settings? (The settings are small things, numbers etc.)
- if the settings are stored in a file or database etc., how can they be made tamper-proof from malicious programs, i.e. is it possible that the only program which can change the settings is my application?
- if my application is the only program which can directly change the settings, that's not secure if any malicious client can access my application's API. Therefore is there a mechanism whereby an application can police usage of its API to a known list of clients?

Configurable settings are generally stored in a property list file (.plist). E.g. see Storing Dictionaries in the NSDictionary reference.

In general, there's no such thing as tamper-proof. You need to decide on a level of security based on how important your program is and the consequences of a security failure.

I guess you could require clients to logon in some fashion. But protection against an entity with knowlege of your API and the ability to install a malicious client requires a level of security far above what you've asked about so far. Simply identifying the client in this scenario is a little like securing a water heater against a 9.0 earthquake when we expect the entire building to collapse at 7.5.
For example, a priori I would look at your network input long before I would consider a malicious, local client.
I would suggest defining your security requirements in terms of what kinds of attacks you expect and how far you're willing to go towards a defense. At that point one of the security experts around here might be able to recommend some specific solutions.

A more accurate topic description makes the forum easier to search, and also gets the attention of the right experts. Photos in Mail / iPhoto Photo Browser are out of date.

In Mail, a photo browser button allows me to browse the contents of my iPhoto library (Events, places, etc).
However, the contents are not the same as what I see in iPhoto. They appear to be out of date - no event or photo after Jan 2011 is present.
iPhoto itself is working just fine, and has plenty of more recent photos and events etc.
Any ideas what's going on?
Mail version 4.6, iPhoto 9.2.3

Where is your Library stored?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a File called 'AlbumData.xml'.
Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?

Global Application Contexts - Where to set Client Identifier?

I am trying to use global application contexts as part of an implementation of fine grain access control.
This is within an eBusiness Suite environment, specifically CRM, so is a multi-tiered environment.
Users access both Forms based screens and OA framework screens.
I believe I need to use global application contexts as users may have multiple database sessions.
Also, all users will login using the same database login account.
Provided I can set a unique identifier for a user that persists throughout all their sessions I can make use of the username and client_id parameters of set_context, below:-
DBMS_SESSION.set_context (namespace => 'XXUOM_CONTEXTS',
attribute => 'EXEMPT_FROM_VPD_POLICIES',
VALUE => l_exempt,
username => USER,
client_id => pi_user_id);
The difficulty I am having is finding a suitable place to set the client identifier.
I am not sure if the value is being cleared by some other code or if the value isn't being set in all sessions.
I am using:-
DBMS_SESSION.set_identifier (pi_user_id)
That I call from after insert triggers on either tables icx_sessions or fnd_logins.
However, the client identifier is always null when I query it from within the application, via:-
SELECT SYS_CONTEXT ('USERENV', 'CLIENT_IDENTIFIER') from dual
If I set the value via a personalisation rule within a Form, then the value remains.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone can advise me on where I am going wrong.

It's a different patch.
The patch support have given me is 9275708, FND_GLOBAL.ORG_NAME RETURNS ENGLISH, EVEN WHEN SESSION LANGUAGE IS NOT.
This patch has been superceded by 12875860, HR SECURITY PROFILE IS NOT SET CORRECTLY.
So we have applied patch 12875860.
I've tried to find out from support what happened to the original patch and why it was removed/deleted rather than superceded.
I have not found it possible to find out what each of these patches does. There's very little documentation on them.
I have raised an SR.
The details are 3-4943519401: How to add DBMS_SESSION.SET_IDENTIFIER() to FND_GLOBAL.INITIALIZE.
The results of:
     select fnd_profile.value('FND_CONNECTION_TAGGING') from dual
     gives nothing on our Release 11 environment.
select * from fnd_profile_options where profile_option_name = 'FND_CONNECTION_TAGGING';
gives nothing.
On Release 12, the results are:
     select fnd_profile.value('FND_CONNECTION_TAGGING') from dual;
     ENABLED
     select * from fnd_profile_options where profile_option_name = 'FND_CONNECTION_TAGGING';
     returns a record.

New user, same application settings and prefs

I want to create a new user account, but I would like to keep the same preferences and settings for certain applications, Mail, bookmarks in Safari, etc. from another account. I don't want to completely duplicate an account, but I would like to keep some things the same, and I don't want to have to go and manually re-enter everything I've set up, like, say, my Photoshop actions and color settings.
Can I do this? If so, how?

Global Storage Settings & Update

Firstly, my apologies for the ridiculously long user name. I played the key board in frustration weeks back when registering and haven't been able to change it by updating my Adobe a/c because it won't let me put an address etc that isn't in the US (I'm in Australia).
I've been trying to find an answer to my issue by reading other posts. There seems to be some very similar issues with the latest update for Flash Player but owing to my lack of expertise on the matter I'll outline my specific problem. So, here it is:
I've been locked out of the edit function of my website host account (wix.com) because it requires me to update my Flash Player settings: http://support.wix.com/index.php/Editor_Doesnt_Open
I have downloaded the latest version of Flash half a dozen times now and installed it. Installation always seems to go just fine and no error messages are brought up. The problem is the updated version doesn't seem to have installed itself into any of my web browsers.
The Flash Player Settings Manager (access c/- above link) doesn't even display in Firefox. It does display in Google Chrome (which is up to date & my default browser), IE & Safari.
In order to access the edit function at my web hosting a/c, I need (in Global Storage Settings) to have 100KB on the disc space slider and also the box ticked for "Allow third party flash content..."
The box won't allow itself to be ticked in any of the aforementioned browsers although I can move the slider to 100KB. If, however I exit the page and return later the slider is always back at "None" (I'm not sure if that is normal or not?).
I have AVG anti-virus which I have tried temporarily disabling while installing the update. I have also restarted my computer after installations and so forth but still no luck. Hope someone who has a clue can get back to me. Thanks.

Hi H, I thot maybe that is what happened. Anytime you mention Explorer in the same sentence with Windows, one thinks of Internet Explorer :-) I'm sure many have maybe done that.

I'm not sure what is actually happening when the folders in that location are removed. I can't see how they can be the Flash Folders that the Flash files are located in.
That one person said something about "don't worry, they will just be replaced", remember? I wonder if those folders are holding the Temp folders?
I'll ask Pat when I have time. It would be good to understand it.

Major pain the butt. This has been a request from Apple users for many years. it's great you can now combine all emails into one, but some people want them kept separate and have separate icons on the main page. They could easily do this by having one "MAIL" account as white and another red. Or put MAIL 1 and MAIL 2. Or an actual label that the mail accounts are called on the ICONS!!

Not that it matters a lot, Android vs iPhone interface is largely a matter of personal preference and what you know... I'm not sure which one you're saying is not efficient...

I currently have two email accounts setup. My iPhone main page Mailbox settings reads:

Inboxes
All Inboxes
Gmail

Accounts
Gmail
[email protected]
I wish there an efficient way to move back and forth while in the "Inbox" between accounts. Also, Why does one gmail account show as "Gmail" and another as the actually address?
The names are based on the names you gave the accounts when you set them up.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account you want to re-name. Go to the "Description" field and put in what ever you want.
Second, there is no way to quickly choose a bunch of emails to delete. I have to manually go into each one and move it to the Trash folder.
If you tap the edit button in the upper right while in mail, you can select multiple items to move, delete or mark (flag).
I don't want any of the condescending remarks, that I've read here and in other forums. I'm honestly looking for a solution, which I think you are too! One thing I realized is that iPhone users in these forums are really defensive and quick to say "that's how it is, live with it, if you don't like it go away" Um...the only thing that tells me is you are pretty bitter and have kept telling yourself that, to force yourself to like your device. I prefer to express my issues, and find solutions. There is ALWAYS a solution...
I think what you will find is that many people here, myself included, tend to get a bit short with people who start off with attacks or whining about how something has been asked for for years and should be easy, rant about things that have already been beaten to death multiple times in the forums, talk about how much better Android or BB are at something (really... if it's that much better, why did they buy an iPhone to begin with?), etc., or continue to ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search, or even just by looking back at the last dozen posts to the forum, half of which probably asked the EXACT SAME question.
I don't think any of us go out of our way to be rude or uncivil. That said, attacking the people who are attempting to help you is much more likely to generate a response of 'if you don't like it, go away', than it is to generate something that will be truly helpful.
