Global Catalog and IFM files

What is the difference between when you "Install Domain Controller as a Global Catalog or without a Global Catalog"?

When the first domain controller is installed on the network by default it becomes the global catalog server, when you install the additional domain controllers then you will have to manually specify the global catalog server in case if you want.
The global catalog is a distributed data repository that contains a searchable, partial representation of every object in every domain
in a multidomain Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) forest. The global catalog is stored on domain controllers that have been designated as global catalog servers and is distributed through multimaster replication. Searches that are directed
to the global catalog are faster because they do not involve referrals to different domain controllers

  • Global Catalog and Searching Child Domains

    Hi Everyone,
I'm attempting to sync events from a parent domain and I want to include all child domains as well. The forest contains a parent domain with 2 child domains. In my adapter I have the following configuration specified:
    Container: DC=parent,DC=company,DC=com
    Search Filter: DC=parent,DC=company,DC=com
    Search Child Domain: Checked
Global Catalog: DC1.parent.company.com (Domain Controller of the parent domain is configured as Global Catalog)
When I attempt to sync domains from the child domain I recieve the following error:
dn attribute not found in search result
Does anyone have insight into what might be occuring. I can query the gc and can retrieve the events with no problem from other tools but IDM seems to always have an error for these child domain events. All comments or suggestions welcome. Thanks

This is the actual error from the AS log if that helps:

  • How can I select 5-star photos in one catalog and use them to create a new catalog

I've been using Lightroom since LR1. I now have several LR 5.5 catalogs generally organized by year and camera. I want to create a new catalog which will contain my best from each catalog. BUT, I don't want to remove the photos from their "home" catalog. The photos will continue to reside in both their original catalog and in the new "Portfolio" catalog. The easiest way to approach this is to filter photos in catalog "A" by rating, select all 5-star photos and create a new catalog containing just the selection. I don't want to export or remove them from their catalog or move them on disk. I want them to appear in BOTH catalogs. Since Lightroom is built on a database that merely points to image files, it seems like this should be possible.
I realize I can create an empty catalog and select File->Import from Another Catalog... , then locate the photos one at a time by name and location clicking the import checkbox - tedious is an understatement when you have several 10's of thousands of photos.
    Any ideas?

    jimfeet wrote:
Yes, that's an option I've considered. But as with any database, size is inversely proportional to speed - larger database equals slower performance. LR 5 is much better than earlier versions in this regard but when you reach 100,000 images you can feel it.
This is incorrect. I accept that you think the database is getting slower, but the database (and really all databases) are designed to work pretty much the same regardless of the number of records, except for perhaps searching through the entire catalog. We have seen in this forum people who are now editing larger RAW files than a few years ago, they see it is slower, and decide it is the size of the database, rather than the size of their photos.
What aspects of Lightroom are slow? If it's scrolling and displaying the previews and searching, then it might be the database. If its displaying images in the Develop module, it is NOT the database at all.
Have you taken steps to improve the performance of the database, such as Optimizing it regularly? have you tried these performance tips: FAQ: Experiencing Performance related problems in Lightroom?

Is there any solution (other than buying
I really think 'buying' is the best solution on this one.  Ideally, you would have at least five internal hard drives.
    System
    Projects
    Cache/Scratch
    Media
    Exports
Use externals and network drive only for backup.

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.

I want to get everything off my hard drive and work in catalogs on an external drive but I need all my older photos moved too .

You move your catalog file using your operating system. Move it to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it. Please understand that your catalog file ought to reside on your fastest disk; if you move it to an external drive you may notice slower performance.
You move your photos via this procedure: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
It doesn't matter what order you do it in
You used the phrase "work in catalogs" (plural), may I recommend that you work with a single catalog, there are usually plenty of advantages to using a single catalog, and no real disadvantages

  • Editing files in my catalog and then moving them back. Help.

I want to take a folder of images in the LR catalog on my desktop with me while travelling so that I can edit them on my laptop but, the question I have is, if I export them as a catalog to a portable drive, how do I put them back in the catalog on my desktop once I've cited them so that the old files on the desktop are overwritten with the new changes? I'm sure this is possible, I just want to make sure I get the steps right, thanks

    Export to Catalog, now.
    Import from Catalog, then.
Try it with a few images in a small pair catalogs, now, to see how it all works, especially what happens if you edit images on the desktop after you’ve split off the travelling catalog, and the import that travelling catalog back into the main catalog after other changes have been made in the travelling catalog.  You can verify whether or not the travelling catalog changes overwrite the main catalog or if they are merged, somehow.

  • OID and Active Directory(global catalog) synchronization issues

We have a large network with 7 domains within the AD forest.....The OID server profile
points to a single domain controller/gc in 1 of these 7 domains. It is able to synchronize when a change occured
from this domain but not the others in the forest by quering port 3268/GC. We reloaded
the bootstrap which reduced the "highest committed usn" last read attribute value in
OID....and the synch started working again with another domain but not consistently(a change in AD gets pulled into OID)...
It seems as if OID cannot read the highest committed usn value for all domains
within one forest by quering a single global catalog domain controller in one
domain....any ideas on best practice to have a consistent synch from OID to all
    domains in AD?

Each AD server in the Forest will maintain his own highestCommittedHSN. The AD GC should maintain a consistent HSN but knows and keeps all the AD servers in sync. So if the GC does not maintain a consistent HSN you should contact Microsoft as well (besides this forum :-)

  • Catalog and Keyword Non-Image files

In addition to my images, I have a growing collection of background and reference information relating to the subject or location of the images.
I would like Lightroom to be able to Catalog and apply keywords to non-image files.
I use a metadata search to find my images; I want to be able to use the same tool (Lightroom) and the same metadata (keywords) to find other related information.
If Lightroom could Catalog and Keyword all Adobe format files (PDF, InDesign, etc.) this would be a great start.
The next step; selectable list of file-types; export keywords to .xmp

    Joe,
Being a digital archivist dealing primarily with pages digitized from the turn of the 20th Century for a religious sect I am highly involved in the usage of keywords.  Each page of a work, be it either a volume of a newspaper or a book, contains keywords.  I do not use side-car files but instead incorporate my keywords directly into the resultant TIF file.
So I used your posting to see what the answer was.  To that end I am presently working on a 1922 title, Thirty-One Years of Organized Work in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana by Church of the Brethren from 1891 to 1922, that will consist of slightly over 500 pages.  To test your question I placed the title of the work as a keyword.  I then used Bridge's find ability.  It did not work.
I forgot that Bridge converts all commas into semi-colons.  And changing the colons into semi-colons still returned no results.  An examination of the keywords tab showed the string broken down in to sections.  Searching for the longest string showed the problem.  Returning to my keyowrd string I removed all instances of the semi-colons and re-searched.  This resulted in a properyl found file.
So.  The longest string I have tested to date is 120 characters, the title of the work minus the commas.  I suspect that Curt is correct in his assumption that it is limited by the operation system.  I tested this theory by incorporating a double string (without the commas) of my book's title.  This was 241 characters including the space between the duplicated title.  The search was successful.  A triple set of the title returned no hits.

  • Multi user catalog and how to make it - use a checked out system

Lots of people want or need a Multi user ability in lightroom here is one way to achieve multi-user catalogs by using a check-in check-out system.
The Catalog would open normally upon a second user opening LR would then ask to switch to multi-user mode.
Once in multi user mode lightroom would lock-out images, collections, or folders by a checked-out for editing system.
By checking-out images, collections, or folders: files would be unavailable to other users until edits are saved, and the images, collections, or folders are checked-in.
This check-in check-out system would need a global check-in feature in case someone forgot to check in an image, collection, or folders (global check-in could be admin level). Word documents, CAD files, etc, use a similar lock-out/read only system for the files. Since, we wouldn't want to bloat the files with programing to lock out the files, this would have to be added to the catalog and managed by the catalog.

    I googled that (easy when you know what the answer is) and yes the ScheduledThreadPool retains threads for re-use, so you have to check that all threads are done and then shutdown() the scheduler... like this:     while (!future.isDone()) {

         scheduler.shutdown();

  • AD 2008 R2 - Bringing old Global Catalog DC Back Online

Hi all, looking for some direction to take on a Win 2008R2 domain controller server that's been off the network for awhile. Here's the situation:  There's an office that we have that was closed. There was a global catalog domain controller server running
there that was also functioning as a file server. That server was powered off and put in storage until a new office location was found. It took longer than expected to find a new office location and now we are ready to bring that server online and
back into service. It's been 150 days since it was powered off.  Our Active Directory tombstoneLifetime is set for the default value of 60 days.
I'm hesitant to turn this server back on as I don't know what impact on our Active Directory this will have. Can anyone offer some suggestions on how I should handle this situation? I would definitely appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Just to re-iterate. One of our GC Domain Controllers has been turned off for 150 days. It's completely operational.  Can it just be connected back to the network and powered on? I'm looking to find out if it will cause any negative impact
    to our Active Directory.
I apologize, maybe I wasn't crystal clear. No, you do not want t connect it back to the network.
It doesn't matter if it's a GC or not. That's not the mitigating factor here. The point is it's a DC that hasn't talked to the other DCs in the time frame allowed that's dictated by the tombstone value.
When a DC is introduced that hasn't replicated beyond the AD Tombstone period, the DC's replication attempts will effectively be ignored by the other DCs. The out of date DC doesn't really know this. The reason that replication is not allowed to continue is
that the two machine’s views of deleted objects may now be different. The source machine may still have copies of objects that have been deleted (and garbage collected) on this machine. If they were allowed to replicate, the source machine might return objects
    which have already been deleted.
And worse, if it held a FSMO role, it complicates things, GC or not, because there are some roles that just simply can't be re-introduced, such as the RID pool manager.
There are ways you can possibly try to introduce it and get it replcating again, however the concensus, even among Microsoft engineers is to simply to force demote it (using the /forceremoval switch), or just turn it off, rebuild it, run a metadata cleanup
and re-promote it as a fresh replica.

Event ID 2042: It has been too long since this machine replicated
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757610(v=ws.10).aspx
In summary, as I've suggested, it's much easier to trash it, cleanup AD, rebuild and re-promote.
