Global change to the size of a text frame in InDesign 5.5?

Is there a way to make a global change to the size of a text frame in InDesign 5.5? I just laid out a book and the size needs to go up half an inch.

If you have worked properly and have done following:
Set up Masters with margins and columns,
Aligned all text frames with the margins,
Turned on Layout Adjustment,
You will only change the margins on the Master and it will change every page.
If not …
you have to do it manually.

    Although clunky as you say, this sounds like a reasonably efficient way to accomplish what I was seeking.
    Address Book has no global find/replace. Bob Grove suggested one possible workaround; however, a grep-capable text editor (eg, TextWrangler) is better than TextEdit if complex strings are involved.
    An alternative is Bento (which is designed specifically to interact with the AB database), but it's not free.

  • Table of contents and the order of multiple text frames flowing across pages

    I have a multi-page document,
    on each page, there are 2 text frames:
    - A text frame for containing a PAGE TITLE
    and
    - A text frame, flowing from one page to another containing: a MAIN TITLE, a SECTION TITLE, and flowing body copy (on page 1); and another MAIN TITLE, a SECTION TITLE, and flowing body copy; (on page 2)
    When I generate a TOC, using the Page, Main and Section Titles styles, the expected outcome would be:
    Page Title             1
       Main Title           1
    Section Title          1
    Page Title             2
       Main Title           2
    Section Title          2
    But because the Main title and Section titles are all within one flowing text frame and the content flows across multiple pages, and each of the Page Titles are within 2 separate text frames, the actual TOC generated is:
    Page Title             1
       Main Title          1
    Section Title         1
       Main Title           2
    Section Title          2
    Page Title             2
    ...where the TOC lists all the TOC items from the flowing text frame in one grouping first, then the individual free standing text frame title.
    QUESTION: Is the only way to automatically rectify this is to combine all the text into one flowing text frame? or is there another workaround?
    Have played with the left/right, top/bottom alignment of the individual text frames; also experimented with the object layering, to no avail..
    Thanks for any insights.

    I ended up using a product called InFlow from EmSoftware.  The solution offers a plugin to InDesign that builds pages on the fly when there is overset text.  The setup is pretty minimual and it seems easy to use.  The only drawback that the plugin MAY have is that it does not remove the pages it built if the pages are not needed from record to record.  I could not test this myself since my test data did not test more then one record, but when I turned my proof set off, the pages that were built were still on screen.  It does seem to work well for what we are looking to do, so if anyone is looking for something that will build pages on the fly in situations where the "Dynamic Story Handling" is not available, I would suggest looking into this.

  • Getting the size of an internal frame?

    Hi allm
    I want to be able to get the size of an internal frame. I have set the size of the main JFrame to that of Windows by calling Toolkit.getScreenSize(); But i can't seem to find an equivalent for internal frames.
    Basically I have two components in the internal frame that I want to have equal width. I was going to find out the size of the internal frame and then half it and applay a horizontal strut to each component.
    If there is a better way of doing it i'm open to suggestions but any help at all is much appreciated

    The situation is that I have a class that has about 80
    instance fields of basic data types. But it was
    getting overly complicated. As a number of these
    fields related to year and day data I tried to
    re-write with GregorianCalendar instead.
    There are in the region of 45,000 instance of my clas
    being held in an array, however when I tried to use my
    modified class (with the Calendar fields replacing the
    basic data types) I kept running into OutOfMemoryError
    after about 25,000 instances were created. So I
    figured that the GregorianCalendar class must be
    eating up my memory. Was intrigued, but couldn't find
    out how to calculate the size of my new class.
    Hmmm, serialize it you say? Ok, I'll try that.ok don't do that ;)
    ummm i was giving advice assuming (incorrectly i turns out) that you were trying to see how much space the serialized object would take up when written to disk or over a network etc.
    this does not appear to be your problem.
    so here are my new more informed suggestions.
    1) if you were going to write out the "data" parts of your object so
    it could be re-created what would they be. i'm thinking you could
    just boil it all down maybe to a long as in Date.getTime(); then
    you could have a long[] array with 45,000 slots. this should take up far less memory than having myObject[] with 45,000 slots. then you
    could have one actual object that you insert the data into to play
    around with. this may not be the idealists solution but if you have a
    lot of objects you may not want to carry around all the excess
    stuff.
    2) as an aside you say you tried to re-write the GregorianCalendar...
    have your tried extending it or extending Calendar. the idea of
    extending other non-final classes is you can provide your own
    implementation of some things or add totally new methods without having
    to re-write an existing class.
    just some ideas...

  • How to align/flush completely to the right margin or text frame?

    Is this possible? I'm trying to align the Standing Head to the edge of the frame.

    Is the colored background simply the color of your text frame? If so, no, you cannot move text out at the right hand side (on the left side, inserting a thin space before the first character and using a negative kern value works -- but not on the right side). Optical Margin Alignment does something, but it appears to move the right-aligned text to the left instead ...
    If you want to be able to apply a paragraph style and forget about it, you will have to separate the background color and the text frame itself. Then you can make the text frame just a bit wider, and set the right margin of the "regular" text to that same bit.
    You can also put the header into a separate frame and make it an anchored object. More work, harder to adjust, same effect -- but you don't need to resize your text frame.

  • Creating Scrollable text frames in InDesign

    I've been trying to create scrollable text frames in InDesign CS6 and, for the life of me, cannot figure out how to do so for an interactive PDF.
    I've done so for touchscreen devices before through DPS and the scrollable frame option, but I've never tried to do it for something non-touchscreen/mobile.  I don't even know if it's possible, but I am sending this to someone who may not have touchscreen access with touchscreen scroll functionality and I wouldn't want to risk a good portion of text to go unread because of a lack-of functionality.
    So, I guess my question is:  Is there a way to create a scrollable text field for an interactive PDF that could be scrolled through using a mouse or keyboard?
    Thanks in advance!

    No. It's DPS only.

  • ComboBox Problem to change the size of selected text in JTextPane.

    hi 2 all!
    I have a problem in combo box actions, when i change the item in the combo its set is not set at that time but that action is performed when next action is taken, i have used combobox.setAction(new StyledEditorKit.FontSizeAction(" click", 12);) command to set the size of the selected text
    Plz suggest the solution also if possible,plz provide some code for this
    Action action1 = new StyledEditorKit.FontSizeAction(
                                                 "double click", 12);
                                       Action action2 = new StyledEditorKit.FontSizeAction(
                                                 "double click", 14);
                                       Action action3 = new StyledEditorKit.FontSizeAction(
                                                 "double click", 18);
    s2 = (String) cb7.getSelectedItem();
                                       if (s2.equals("Small")) {
                                            cb7.setAction(action1);
                                            e1.setSource(cb7);
                                                      } else
                                       if (s2.equals("Medium")) {
                                            cb7.setAction(action2);
                                            e1.setSource(cb7);
                                                                          } else if (s2.equals("Large")) {
                                            cb7.setAction(action3);
                                            // e1.setSource(cb7);
    when i chooze any combobox item then according to that item i set the Action on ComboBox but that action is not working properly on the selected text in the JTextPane..means selected text in JText Pane is not changes its Size according to the comboBox selected ITEM.
    PLZ plzzzzzzzzzz help me:((.i will be thankfull to u.
    thanx in advance..

    this code is not working properly according to the action i set on comboBox.Thats correct, the setAction() method is used to invoke an existing Action on the combo box, not create a new Action.
    What you need to do is have a single action that uses the information from the item that was selected to build a dynamic Action to change the font. Something like:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
         JComboBox comboBox = (JComboBox)e.getSource();
         int fontSize = Integer.parseInt( comboBox.getSelectedItem().toString() );
         Action fontAction = new StyledEditorKit.FontSizeAction("size", fontSize);
         fontAction.actionPerformed(null);
    }

  • Increasing the size of designated text area in a photo book

    I am using IPhoto version 9.5.1 on a MacBook Pro (10.9.2). I am trying to increase the designated text area so that I can increase the font size. This will allow for the final product to be more legible. Currently, I am featuring a student per page. The designated text areas are 4 separate sections on these pages.  I would like to include on each page the following.
    Aviator
    Person's Name
    Algebra I
    Homecoming Dance
    When I increase the font size in those 4 designated areas, the red caution triangle with exclamation point states, 'This text doesn't fit the designated text area!'
    I have two questions.
    1. How do I increase the text area so the larger text will fit and print properly?
    2. Is there an overall command that I can input these increases to the text area so that the 36 papes have the same changes in the designated text areas? Otherwise, I will have to make those changes for each individual pages that are featuring a student.

    You can "adjust" a photo frame or text box size on a page with the following key combinations:
    Command + Option +⬆arrow:  increase frame height.
    Command + Option +⬇arrow:  decrease frame height.
    Command + Option + ➜ arrow:  increase frame width.
    Command + Option + ⬅ arrow:  decrease frame width.
    To adjust its position on the page use these key combinations:
    Command + Control + ➜ arrow:  move frame to right.
    Command + Control + ⬅  arrow:  move frame to left.
    Command + Control + ⬆ arrow:  rotate frame counter clockwise.
    Command + Control + ⬇ arrow:  rotate frame clockwise.
    You can conver the standard frame (on the left) to this one (on the right)
    Always be sure to create a PDF file of the book for proofing before ordering a book. This Apple document describes how to create the PDF file: iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture. Keep the PDF file to compare it with the printed copy when it arrives.
    If you have Pages you can easily create custom book pages as images and add them to a 1 photo per page layout by following this tutorial: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book

  • How to calculate the size of a Text Field?

    Is there a way to calculate the number of characters allow in a Text Field? If a uer type over this number of characters a popup window will appear telling the user that he/she has too much texts. Of course I could use the Limit Length, but I have to manually put texts into this text field and count them. If the Limit Lenth number is too small, the texts does not fill the whole text field. If the number is too big then the texts does not get printed.

    There would be no easy way to do this. You'd need to do some pretty fancy calculations, it would all depend on the size of the field, what font is used, the font size, whether it's been bolded, underlined, italicized, etc etc.
    What are you trying to accomplish? Make it so that the user can type in the text field until it fills and then have it stop without scroll bars coming up to allow him to keep typing?

  • How to determine the size of selected text

    Hi
    I'd like to draw a box around some selected text (a textRange), however I can't figure out how to detemine the size or position of the text.  The overall size of a textFrame is possible to find (not sure about position), but when you've got just a few characters selected I don't see any way to get the size or position.  Any ideas?

    You may have to do some testing of your own with this… I tested here and 'think' its OK but could have overlooked something… For me the best way to get this data is to outline the type store the info in a variable then undo the outlining process… You can then continue your script with info in hand… An example that draws a box over each selected character… I cheated with only the one text frame but you can resolve that? You could easy use math.min & math.max to draw around an array of bounds… I didn't bother with a load of tests it expects selected text range as is… have fun…
    #target Illustrator
    textBoxer();
    function textBoxer() {
              var i, doc, sel, start, end, spaceB4, spaceInc, mat, grp, count, boxes;
              doc = app.activeDocument;
              sel = doc.selection;
              start = sel.characterOffset-1; // Not zero based…
              end = start + sel.length;
              doc.selection = null;
              spaceB4 = doc.textFrames[0].contents.substr( 0, start );  // Cheated here you will need to find parent frame…
              mat = spaceB4.match( /\s/g ); // Resolve the lost of white space characters before selection
              mat != null ? spaceB4 = mat.length : spaceB4 = 0;
              spaceInc = doc.textFrames[0].contents.substr( 0, end );  // Here too…
              mat = spaceInc.match( /\s/g ); // Resolve the lost of white space characters in selection
              mat != null ? spaceInc = mat.length : spaceInc = 0;
              grp = doc.textFrames[0].createOutline(); // Items in new group are last to first order
              app.redraw();
              count = grp.compoundPathItems.length;
              boxes = Array();
              for ( i = 0; i < count; i++ ) {
                        boxes.push( grp.compoundPathItems[i].visibleBounds );
              boxes.reverse(); // Fix the order
              app.undo(); // Bounce back…
              app.redraw();
              start = start - spaceB4;

  • Change only the format of similar text?

    Hi All,
    I am trying to change the formatting of similar text.
    e.g.

    I want to change all similat items aswell, so R-4-11 and R-5-3 and so on.
    I thought wildcards would do it but it doesn't. Atleast I am not getting it to work.

    OK, that doesn't match the example above. if you are going to have single or multiple digits in both positions you can use \b\u-\d+-\d+  this will find any uppercase-hyphen-one or moredigits-hyphen-one or more digits string with a space or line break in front of it.
