Global Light Defaults

In CS4 I was able to set a global light default by going to Layer > Layer Styles > Glogal Light... Once I set that global light value (example: 90º), any new document created would have that same global light setting.
In CS5, I have to set the global light on every single new document that I create. The default setting I choose is totally ignored on new documents.
Do I have a bad install? Does global light work for others in the same way as cs4? Are they fixes that people are aware of for this issue?
Thanks in Advance

If you mean the Lighting Effects Filter, that was removed from PSE12. However if you have an older version of PSE you can copy the Lighting Effects filter to PSE12 (unless it is the PSE10 version which does not work). If you don't have an older version you can still download the PSE11 trial from prodesigntools.com (providing you follow their very important instructions exactly).

  • Changing default Global light angle?

    How can the default angle setting for global light be changed, in Photoshop CS4?
    I do not like the 30' but prefer 120' to have the light from top left and shadows bottome right. However, saving as a style does not save the angle, just all the other settings.
    I would be grateful for help as I have lots of images I need to prepare for a website that uses my preference in lighting, so would like it to match. At the moment, I am ready to SCREAM!!!! For the money this software costs, such an option should be easy.

    Peter,
    The reason that Zeno's script didn't affect existing files is because it only activates when a new document is created (assuming you followed his instructions to the letter and selected "New Document" from the event list). Select "Open Document" from the event list and it should work. An alternative would be to assign a keyboard shortcut to the Action you created and just use that anytime you want to reset the default.
    Also, is Global Light functionality even important to you to preserve? If not:
    If you just want to always create a style with the same angle all the time and don't care about Global Light functionality in the future, just create a Style Preset with Global Light unchecked. This will always create the layer style with the angle you desire within both new and existing documents.
    The problem will be that in the future is if you want to change the angle of multiple layer styles in the same document, you will not be able to just change Global Light and automatically impact all the layer styles. A work-around in this case would be to create a new style preset with the new angle, select all the layers you want to change, and then apply the new preset.

  • Global Light in CS4 3D Extended

    O.K., I imported a photo, selected 3D from the Menu then selected "New Shape from Layer" then "Sphere" and my image is wrapped nicely around the sphere. But the image is too dark. If I try to use a brightness layer or levels to brighten it up, then I no longer have any control over 3D animation of this object. So next I investigate the various 3D lighting options. Point or Spot - too focused, Infinite leaves shadows which for this particular purpose I don't want. I just want a nice even light over the entire sphere. It seems like "Global" light would be the obvious choice but the choice is greyed out....  Any suggestions would be welcome.
    I find the "help" in Photoshop less than really useful. Help generally tells me that "you can use "X" to do "Y" but never gets around to telling you how to use "X". Adobe could certainly use some good technical writers!

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for the followup! I'm not at all certain any more exactly which term I used for the search. I didn't actually know what the "widget" was called, but eventually discovered that name on the web while searching for Photoshop CS4 Extended 3D Tools, I believe. I still didn't realize that it was called the "Axis Widget," but of course that makes perfect sense. I believe once I discovered that it was called a "widget" that I used that term for my search and eventually discovered the fact that if OpenGL wasn't enabled that one couldn't see this widget. Then I began a search to try and discover how to enable OpenGL. Once I found that (in the reference link I posted in the other response), I was able to see and use the Axis Widget.
    I suspected that the greyed out "Global" light might be a mistake but wasn't able to find enough information in Photoshop Help to actually determine that for certain.
    Obviously, 3D is new for Photoshop and there will be bugs and issues. I do believe that it represents viable new features which will greatly expand the functionality and usefulness of Photoshop in the future. There are bound to be many questions about the various tools, especially for those who do not have a strong background in 3D. I think that's why it's important for Adobe to perhaps issue an additional guide including a glossary of terms which would be ever so helpful for those who search the Photoshop help. Just knowing what to call various tools will help a great deal. I find that when writing software documentation and user guides, I get the best user response when I begin with a comprehensive glossary with web links to definitions. Also, for help, I believe it's very important to give practical samples of how to use features. I'm certain you already know this; but just saying "you can use the (tool name) to (tool function)" without telling the user how to find and select the tool and how to apply it in a practical example, is fairly usless. With complex features such as Photoshop has, it's vital to good customer relationships to minimize confusion.
    This forum has been very useful and I commend Adobe for this type help. Unfortunately, there are numerous Photoshop users who really are not aware that there even is a forum. Those of us who are reasonably web savy tend to forget that many users don't have our background and unless they are specifically directed (perhaps on the trial download page) and reminded, they simply give up in frustration when they can't get adequate help otherwise. I realize there is probably little that can be done about the use of tier one off-shore support because everyone in the electronics and computer industry is doing it, but having access to tier two when the tier one support falls short is important. The additional costs to Adobe will be offset by increased customer satisfaction and better sales will eventually offset the initial losses. A number of Photoshop users have long been a bit "miffed" at Adobe for some of their policies such as bundling the RAW converters and leaving those who paid for the stand-alone versions without an upgrade path without purchasing another version of Photoshop, or buying Elements just to get the converter, etc. Good customer relations are paramount for the bottom line of any business.
    I commend you for your efforts to help here on the forum - it's definitely ameliorated an otherwise bad experience for me.
    Best regards,
    Lin

  • Global variable default value

    Hi All.
    I am running Test Stand 3.5 scripting Labview 7.1 vi's to test batches of populated PCB's (using single pass method). On each initial run of aTest Stand session the test site cables need to be calibrated and the values stored for later use. i.e calibrate the site just the once per session.
    I have tried using both a boolean station global and boolean sequence file global and setting them to 'True' when calibration is finished. However the sequence file global defaults to 'False' at the end of each run, (hence cuasing a calibrate each run). and the station global stays 'True' even after the session is ended and Test Stand is closed down. ( hence next session calibration routine is ignored).
    Is there a way to either  a) stop the sequence file global defaulting to 'False' after each 'single pass' run yet default to 'False' on Test Stand shutdown. Or b) default the station global to 'False' on Test Stand shutdown? either method would be OK.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ian R

    Thanks anyway but I just found I need to set the sequence file global properties to 'Shared at run time'.

  • Setting global component defaults / Inheritance of components

    Hi all,
    I'm a JSF beginner, working with VWP & Netbeans. I got two questions :
    1) What is the best way to set n application wide default value for a specific component property? (eg, setting the row-property for all rowgroup components to 5)
    2) Is it possible (and good practice) to implement an inherited component (from sun.ui.components) ? (I want to overwrite/extend some of the base functionality of the vwp-components. Do i have to implement an inherited class or can i use some kind of callbacksfor this?).
    Thanks for any help!

  • Global mounting default timeout of 1min 30s

    I know that there are mount options in /etc/fstab to help control timeout for individual file system mounts, but I am not too fond of tinkering with /etc/fstab because it becomes less portable.  is there a system-wide way to change this 1:30 min mounting timeout parameter globally, applying to all mounts, that I can change?
    /iaw
    PS: I hope everyone has forgotten my embarrassing post yesterday.  long story.  I was not mentally ill.

    As mounting is just a service (edit: a systemd unit), I suspect you can't change this without affecting other services units (without using fstab options).  In some cases, setting too low of a timeout may make some services fail when they would actually complete eventually.  That said, I suspect that the following in /etc/systemd/system.conf are what you are looking for:
    #DefaultTimeoutStartSec=90s
    #DefaultTimeoutStopSec=90s
    EDIT: corrected terminology from "service" to "unit" as noted below - the point remains the same.

  • Global PersistenceDelegate default

    Hi guys,
    I have a question concerning the Java XML long time persistence API (Java SE 5). I have some classes for which I need to implement a PersistenceDelegate.
    Now I'm wondering if there is some mechanism that makes my persistence delegate kind of default persistence delegate which will be used by all XMLEncoders (per default). I think this would be more convenient than setting the persistence delegate for all my classes explicitly for each XMLEncoder I use by means of java.beans.Encoder.setPersistenceDelegate.
    Does anybody have an idea?

    Another thing that you can do (which doesn't seem to be documented) is to set a 'persistenceDelegate' attribute in your BeanDescriptor for your class, like this:
    DefaultPersistenceDelegate delegate = new DefaultPersistenceDelegate( new String[] {"name", "hostAddress", "serverPath", "modulePath", "sourceBaseDir", "classPool"} );
    try {
         Introspector.getBeanInfo( YourClass.class ).getBeanDescriptor().setValue( "persistenceDelegate", delegate );
    } catch( IntrospectionException e ) {
         throw new RuntimeException( e );
    }This will be picked up by XMLEncoder automatically.

  • Global attributes

    Hi there!
    I´m starting to work with IDM and I have some basic doubts. For example: for using global attributes... Do we have to define it? Do the attribute have to be present in all resources?
    Another cuestion is the population of the user view from SAP. I would like to know the simplest way to do and test it.
    My problem is than I just had an complex enviroment and I only have self-formation I could get with sun docs... but it´s so extense that I haven´t yet a good vision of main process.
    Thanks and regards.

    Global attributes do not have to be present in all resources. But resources that have a mapping for the attribute will use the value. So if you write something to "global.firstname", every resource (including Lighthouse), will be updated.
    This is for writing. For reading the value and displaying it, I use the following field syntax:
    <Field name='global.firstname'>
      <Default>
          <ref>attributes[Lighthouse].firstname</ref>
       </Default>
    </Field>

  • Permanently Disabling Fan Lights on HP Omen

    Is there any way to permanently turn off the rear vent lights on the HP Omen? Using the Omen Control utility and dimming all leds to 0% works only for one session. After closing the notebook lid, setting it to sleep, or a shut down, the changes are completely forgotten upon startup or wake. You have to go back into the utility, switch to another profile, then back to the profile with all lighting effects at 0% to get the vent lights to shut off. This solution is not ideal since I can't use the keyboard backlight if I want the fan lights to stay off during a work session and the lights come on anyway upon activating the notebook in any way. It's embarassing in a library/work/coffee shop situation. I guess this is more of a request than a question, since I've seen this asked in other forum post without an appropriate solution. Please give us the ability to control Zone 8 ( exhaust fan) lighting via OMEN Control software or make sure that it remembers global lighting choices upon bootup/wake. Thank you for your time!

  • How to Set default Workbook as .XLS for Bex 7.0

    Dear Experts,
    I have a customised default workbook set for Bex 7.0. The Extention of this Workbook is .XLSM
    Currently it is not accessible using Excel 2003 due to format issue.
    1)Kindly let me know what should be done so that I can open this Workbook in Excel 2003.
    2) Suggest a way to set the default extension for Bex 7.0  "Custom" workbook (Not SAP standard, the option is available in Global settings-->Default workbook) to .XLS.
    Thank you,
    Nandita

    Dear Nandita,
    The only correction for this situation is documented on these two notes below:
    1339061 - BExAnalyzer: opening XL 2007 files in XL 2003 not possible
    1267924 - BExAnalyzer: Use XLS as File Format when using Excel 2007
       With Frontend Patch 800 a new property "Use XLS File Format" in "Global
       Settings" dialog is available when using BExAnalyzer with Excel 2007 and
       the SAP Default Workbook is being used.
    So, everytime when you created a new workbook, check the flag of "Use XLS File Format" checkbox and save the workbook.
    Then you will be able to open with Excel 2003.

  • Issue with a filter

    I am having a really hard time applying the filter "Brush Strokes -> Angled Strokes" to a colored box, whether it's just a selection or a rectangular box.
    I did this once and it worked (i.e. The box kept the same color and the correct filter was applied to it), but now I am trying to do it with a different box, whenever I access the Filter Gallery with the box selected, the color remains flat, even with the filter in question highlighted. I've tried everything I can think of, but it just seems like a weird glitch.. First time it worked, now it doesn't. Any idea what could be causing this?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    New shapes on new layers don't have any layer styles for me.  I don't recall running across an option for applying layer styles to new shapes.
    Is it possible you're drawing pixels on the same layer?  Layer styles are applied equally to whatever's on the entire layer.
    As far as I know, new layer styles use whatever defaults you explicitly set for them.  There are buttons such as the one shown below for setting your own default.
    The [ ] Use Global Light feature is a bit special in that it uses one global angle for all layer styles (change any one and they all change) - the idea being that things look better when the shadows and highlights all imply the light is coming from the same direction.
    Can you describe a specific case where the default you set isn't being used?  I'll be happy to try to reproduce it.

  • Looking for a reference manual that actually describes in detail all attributes for a command

    I am using CS5. I am teaching myself Photoshop using their book, "Classroom in a book".
    Thought the lessons, they will suggest specific setting for command attributes without describing exacting what these values mean.. For example, on page 88 they give the student specific settings for the Refine Edge dialog bog under the Quick Selection tool. They say, "To prepare the edge for a drop shadow, set Smooth to 24, Feather to 0.5, Contrast to 12, and Shift Edge to -21". Note: I am calling things like Smooth, Feather, Contrast, etc command attributes.
    My question is not about this specific example, but all these attribute values for all the commands. For example, what does Shift Edge really do when negative or positive. My question is: does a reference, either a book, pdf, or a non-Adobe product (probably a book) exist that actually explains when each attribute actually does for every command? Basically looking for a boring detailed reference guide so when I am using a specific command, I can read about the attributes for the specific command and understand what the values really mean and not guess my trial and error.
    Thanks in Advance,

    I hope this clarifies what I am looking for.
    Here's a little snippet from the info about Layer Styles in the Adobe manual.
    Layer style options
    To the top
    Altitude For the Bevel and Emboss effect, sets the height of the light source. A setting of 0 is equivalent to ground level, 90 is directly above the layer. Angle Determines the lighting angle at which the effect is applied to the layer. You can drag in the document window to adjust the angle of a Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, or Satin effect.
    Anti-alias Blends the edge pixels of a contour or gloss contour. This option is most useful on small shadows with complicated contours. Blend Mode Determines how the layer style blends with the underlying layers, which may or may not include the active layer. For example, an inner shadow blends with the active layer because the effect is drawn on top of that layer, but a drop shadow blends only with the layers beneath the active layer. In most cases, the default mode for each effect produces the best results. See Blending modes. Choke Shrinks the boundaries of the matte of an Inner Shadow or Inner Glow prior to blurring. Color Specifies the color of a shadow, glow, or highlight. You can click the color box and choose a color. Contour With solid-color glows, Contour allows you to create rings of transparency. With gradient-filled glows, Contour allows you to create variations in the repetition of the gradient color and opacity. In beveling and embossing, Contour allows you to sculpt the ridges, valleys, and bumps that are shaded in the embossing process. With shadows, Contour allows you to specify the fade. For more information, see Modify layer effects with contours. Distance Specifies the offset distance for a shadow or satin effect. You can drag in the document window to adjust the offset distance. Depth Specifies the depth of a bevel. It also specifies the depth of a pattern. Use Global Light This setting allows you to set one “master” lighting angle that is then available in all the layer effects that use shading: Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, and Bevel and Emboss. In any of these effects, if Use Global Light is selected and you set a lighting angle, that angle becomes the global lighting angle. Any other effect that has Use Global Light selected automatically inherits the same angle setting. If Use Global Light is deselected, the lighting angle you set is “local” and applies only to that effect. You can also set the global lighting angle by choosing Layer Style > Global Light. Gloss Contour Creates a glossy, metallic appearance. Gloss Contour is applied after shading a bevel or emboss. Gradient Specifies the gradient of a layer effect. Click the gradient to display the Gradient Editor, or click the inverted arrow and choose a gradient from the pop-up panel. You can edit a gradient or create a new gradient using the Gradient Editor. You can edit the color or opacity in the Gradient Overlay panel the same way you edit them in the Gradient Editor. For some effects, you can specify additional gradient options. Reverse flips the orientation of the gradient, Align With Layer uses the bounding box of the layer to calculate the gradient fill, and Scale scales the application of the gradient. You can also move the center of the gradient by clicking and dragging in the image window. Style specifies the shape of the gradient. Highlight or Shadow Mode Specifies the blending mode of a bevel or emboss highlight or shadow. Jitter Varies the application of a gradient’s color and opacity. Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow Controls the drop shadow’s visibility in a semitransparent layer. Noise Specifies the number of random elements in the opacity of a glow or shadow. Enter a value or drag the slider. Opacity Sets the opacity of the layer effect. Enter a value or drag the slider. Pattern Specifies the pattern of a layer effect. Click the pop-up panel and choose a pattern. Click the New Preset button          to create a new preset pattern based on the current settings. Click Snap To Origin to make the origin of the pattern the same as the origin of the document (when Link With Layer is selected), or to place the origin at the upper-left corner of the layer (if Link With Layer is deselected). Select Link With Layer if you want the pattern to move along with the layer as the layer moves. Drag the Scale slider or enter a value to specify the size of the pattern. Drag a pattern to position it in the layer; reset the position by using the Snap To Origin button. The Pattern option is not available if no patterns are loaded. Position Specifies the position of a stroke effect as Outside, Inside, or Center. Range Controls which portion or range of the glow is targeted for the contour. Size Specifies the radius and size of blur or the size of the shadow. Soften Blurs the results of shading to reduce unwanted artifacts. Source Specifies the source for an inner glow. Choose Center to apply a glow that emanates from the center of the layer’s content, or Edge toapply a glow that emanates from the inside edges of the layer’s content. Spread Expands the boundaries of the matte prior to blurring.
    Style Specifies the style of a bevel: Inner Bevel creates a bevel on the inside edges of the layer contents; Outer Bevel creates a bevel on the outside edges of the layer contents; Emboss simulates the effect of embossing the layer contents against the underlying layers; Pillow Emboss simulates the effect of stamping the edges of the layer contents into the underlying layers; and Stroke Emboss confines embossing to the boundaries of a stroke effect applied to the layer. (The Stroke Emboss effect is not visible if no stroke is applied to the layer.)
    Technique Smooth, Chisel Hard, and Chisel Soft are available for bevel and emboss effects; Softer and Precise apply to Inner Glow and Outer Glow effects.
    Smooth Blurs the edges of a matte slightly and is useful for all types of mattes, whether their edges are soft or hard. It does not preserve detailed features at larger sizes. Chisel Hard Uses a distance measurement technique and is primarily useful on hard-edged mattes from anti-aliased shapes such as type. It preserves detailed features better than the Smooth technique.
    Chisel Soft Uses a modified distance measurement technique and, although not as accurate as Chisel Hard, is more useful on a larger range of mattes. It preserves features better than the Smooth technique. Softer Applies a blur and is useful on all types of mattes, whether their edges are soft or hard. At larger sizes, Softer does not preserve detailed features.
    Precise Uses a distance measurement technique to create a glow and is primarily useful on hard-edged mattes from anti-aliased shapes
    such as type. It preserves features better than the Softer technique. Texture Applies a texture. Use Scale to scale the size of the texture. Select Link With Layer if you want the texture to move along with the layer as the layer moves. Invert inverts the texture. Depth varies the degree and direction (up/down) to which the texturing is applied. Snap To Origin makes the origin of the pattern the same as the origin of the document (if Link With Layer is deselected) or places the origin in the upper-left corner of the layer (if Link With Layer is selected). Drag the texture to position it in the layer.
