Global Light in CS4 3D Extended

O.K., I imported a photo, selected 3D from the Menu then selected "New Shape from Layer" then "Sphere" and my image is wrapped nicely around the sphere. But the image is too dark. If I try to use a brightness layer or levels to brighten it up, then I no longer have any control over 3D animation of this object. So next I investigate the various 3D lighting options. Point or Spot - too focused, Infinite leaves shadows which for this particular purpose I don't want. I just want a nice even light over the entire sphere. It seems like "Global" light would be the obvious choice but the choice is greyed out....  Any suggestions would be welcome.
I find the "help" in Photoshop less than really useful. Help generally tells me that "you can use "X" to do "Y" but never gets around to telling you how to use "X". Adobe could certainly use some good technical writers!
Thanks,
Lin

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the followup! I'm not at all certain any more exactly which term I used for the search. I didn't actually know what the "widget" was called, but eventually discovered that name on the web while searching for Photoshop CS4 Extended 3D Tools, I believe. I still didn't realize that it was called the "Axis Widget," but of course that makes perfect sense. I believe once I discovered that it was called a "widget" that I used that term for my search and eventually discovered the fact that if OpenGL wasn't enabled that one couldn't see this widget. Then I began a search to try and discover how to enable OpenGL. Once I found that (in the reference link I posted in the other response), I was able to see and use the Axis Widget.
I suspected that the greyed out "Global" light might be a mistake but wasn't able to find enough information in Photoshop Help to actually determine that for certain.
Obviously, 3D is new for Photoshop and there will be bugs and issues. I do believe that it represents viable new features which will greatly expand the functionality and usefulness of Photoshop in the future. There are bound to be many questions about the various tools, especially for those who do not have a strong background in 3D. I think that's why it's important for Adobe to perhaps issue an additional guide including a glossary of terms which would be ever so helpful for those who search the Photoshop help. Just knowing what to call various tools will help a great deal. I find that when writing software documentation and user guides, I get the best user response when I begin with a comprehensive glossary with web links to definitions. Also, for help, I believe it's very important to give practical samples of how to use features. I'm certain you already know this; but just saying "you can use the (tool name) to (tool function)" without telling the user how to find and select the tool and how to apply it in a practical example, is fairly usless. With complex features such as Photoshop has, it's vital to good customer relationships to minimize confusion.
This forum has been very useful and I commend Adobe for this type help. Unfortunately, there are numerous Photoshop users who really are not aware that there even is a forum. Those of us who are reasonably web savy tend to forget that many users don't have our background and unless they are specifically directed (perhaps on the trial download page) and reminded, they simply give up in frustration when they can't get adequate help otherwise. I realize there is probably little that can be done about the use of tier one off-shore support because everyone in the electronics and computer industry is doing it, but having access to tier two when the tier one support falls short is important. The additional costs to Adobe will be offset by increased customer satisfaction and better sales will eventually offset the initial losses. A number of Photoshop users have long been a bit "miffed" at Adobe for some of their policies such as bundling the RAW converters and leaving those who paid for the stand-alone versions without an upgrade path without purchasing another version of Photoshop, or buying Elements just to get the converter, etc. Good customer relations are paramount for the bottom line of any business.
I commend you for your efforts to help here on the forum - it's definitely ameliorated an otherwise bad experience for me.
Best regards,
Lin

  • Changing default Global light angle?

How can the default angle setting for global light be changed, in Photoshop CS4?
I do not like the 30' but prefer 120' to have the light from top left and shadows bottome right. However, saving as a style does not save the angle, just all the other settings.
I would be grateful for help as I have lots of images I need to prepare for a website that uses my preference in lighting, so would like it to match. At the moment, I am ready to SCREAM!!!! For the money this software costs, such an option should be easy.

    Peter,
The reason that Zeno's script didn't affect existing files is because it only activates when a new document is created (assuming you followed his instructions to the letter and selected "New Document" from the event list). Select "Open Document" from the event list and it should work. An alternative would be to assign a keyboard shortcut to the Action you created and just use that anytime you want to reset the default.
Also, is Global Light functionality even important to you to preserve? If not:
If you just want to always create a style with the same angle all the time and don't care about Global Light functionality in the future, just create a Style Preset with Global Light unchecked. This will always create the layer style with the angle you desire within both new and existing documents.
The problem will be that in the future is if you want to change the angle of multiple layer styles in the same document, you will not be able to just change Global Light and automatically impact all the layer styles. A work-around in this case would be to create a new style preset with the new angle, select all the layers you want to change, and then apply the new preset.

  • Global Light Defaults

In CS4 I was able to set a global light default by going to Layer > Layer Styles > Glogal Light... Once I set that global light value (example: 90º), any new document created would have that same global light setting.
In CS5, I have to set the global light on every single new document that I create. The default setting I choose is totally ignored on new documents.
Do I have a bad install? Does global light work for others in the same way as cs4? Are they fixes that people are aware of for this issue?
    Thanks in Advance

If you mean the Lighting Effects Filter, that was removed from PSE12. However if you have an older version of PSE you can copy the Lighting Effects filter to PSE12 (unless it is the PSE10 version which does not work). If you don't have an older version you can still download the PSE11 trial from prodesigntools.com (providing you follow their very important instructions exactly).

I'm doing a transfer from one macbook pro to another. I have CS4 Photoshop Extended. When I go to open it on my new computer it says error 150:30.

Don't try transferring Adobe software. It rarely works and usually breaks the activation mechanism (150:30 error).
Uninstall, run the Cleaner tool then re-install from scratch.

  • Is there a 3D rotate tool in Photoshop CS4 (non-extended)?

I have just installed Photoshop CS4 of my new iMac.  Although I had been led to believe that even the non-extended version came with the 3D rotation tool, in fact, I can find no evidence of it!  Was I misled? If so, I am sad.  Please advise how I might find it, or even add it?

Yes, you are probably right about how I was led to believe the 3D tool was on the "basic" CS4 Photoshop.  Thanks very much.

    Hi Meredith,
Illy aka Adobe Illustrator aka AI.
Photoshop CS4 (non Extended) has a Rotate view tool that works with support video cards to rotate the document canvas. Could that be what was mistakenly called out as 3D rotate tool. (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/features/?view=topnew) Depending on the configuration/age of your iMac model you may not se this.
All the 3D features in Photoshop are for Extended only. (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshopextended/?promoid=DRHXB)

hmm... i wonder if that's "official" or if the installer just doesn't check. i still have cs2 installed on this box, as well as cs3 ee. the rep said that didn't matter as far as the terms of the license went though. (i still say that's not clear and is up for interpretation.) i still haven't decided which i'm going for. the point of my query with the online rep was really to get it cleared up once and for all.
do you still have cs2 or cs installed there too? or just cs3 ee and cs4 standard?
    thanks for the info nick.

  • Lost CS4 Photoshop Extended disk

I misplaced my CS4 Photoshop Extended installation disk and I need to install it on my new laptop.  Where can I download this version?  I have seen the link for Prodesign tools but I was concerned to use it because its not on Adobe's website.

The download links work fine. They're successfully used by people in these forums every day.
The secret is to follow the Steps 0 to 6 of the Very Important Instructions (which appear on every download page) first BEFORE you click the download links.
If you see errors when clicking the links, it's simply a matter of following the instructions then clicking the links.

  • Green light mystery on network extender sys light

has anyone solved the green light mystery on network extender sys light
Message was edited by: Verizon Moderator <<>>

It didn't happen at all yesterday (that I noticed), but yes, when it happens, I have rebooted the NE. I have also rebooted the Cable Modem and the Router during these spells. The firmware on my router has been the same for the last year or so (the last time they released an update. I don't have any visibility into updates on my modem, but it's the same cable modem I've been using for years. During these times where the SYS light is Green, all the other lights are their normal blue.
Given that this setup has been working fine for a couple of years, and, when the lights are all blue, it still works fine, I'm wondering if there has been a code update on the Network Extenders recently, by chance?

  • Photoshop cs3 extended upgrade to cs4 (non extended)?

First of all, is it possible for me to upgrade my cs3 extended version of photoshop to cs4? I have other programs from adobe on here such as dreamweaver, indesign and illustrator, so do I have to upgrade the whole suite or can I just upgrade the one program that I actually use? And lastly, I bought my computer from a friend who already installed all the programs on it so I don't know whether or not it is registered. Would this be a problem when it comes down to actually installing an upgrade?
Sorry, I'm just getting into all of this so I really don't know anything about the adobe products on my computer. Thanks in advance to all who can help me

okay update... I am speaking to a customer service rep to get the special unlock code that everyone is talking about and he is saying that it is not possible to upgrade just one product within a suite. How is everyone else doing it?

  • Cannot use lighting effect in CS6 extended

When I use the lighting effect filter in CS6 extended, it only creates a new layer without any change in the menu and other things.  As advised, I try to edit the GPU setting under the edit menu but the column is in grey colour and cannot be edited.  I have changed my display card to AMD Radeon HD 7770 with an updated driver but it still not works.

Are you sure the document is an RGB 8-bit/channel image?

  • What looks good in Bridge, Lightroom & Safari, looks too light in CS4

When I get things just the way I want them in Lightroom, and export them, when I open them up in Photoshop CS4, they look way too light and even undersaturated. The same image looks the same in Safari, LIghtroom and Bridge, but not CS4.   CS4 is set to sRGB and all the images are sRGB images.
Question: why? And what do I need to do so that images look the same in all applications?
I am on a 27" iMac running all the latest software.  I have calibrated my monitor and it is set at about 140 cdm2

try exporting from lightroom with AdobeRGB (1998) color space and in photoshop at color settings / working space / rgb choose also AdobeRGB (1998).

  • Upgrade from CS3 Extended to CS4 (non-Extended) fails

    Hello everyone,
I looked at the upgrade method from CS3 Extended to CS4 it tells me I need to contact Adobe via phone and purchase the upgrade.  After receiving the upgrade, I attempt to install it and it informs me that it cannot find a valid Photoshop install and asks for version and serial number of my previous version.  It only give me the options of Photoshop CS, Photoshop CS2 (all the languages), and finally Photoshop CS3. No option for CS3 Extended.  So I give it CS3 and plug in the serial number and it says invalid serial number.
Called Technical support and spent 30 minutes waiting.  They had me do 'Ctrl+Shift+Double mouse click" to get a "Challenge Number" which does not work.  Then they said I had to call Customer support to get this Challenge number.  Called Customer Support and spent 1hr waiting...and still waiting.
So, can anyone help on how I can upgrade?  I'm guessing they were suppose to give me a serial number to upgrade.
I finally gave up with the phone support and filed a support case online...which said I should get a reply within 3-days.
Very disappointed with Support.  After paying over $1k in products, I would expect good customer support...but that's for another forum
    Thanks.

Well, after getting so fed up, I finally figured it out.  But first I have to tell my story of frustration.
So, after calling Technical Support, their instructions to get the 'Challenge Number' by pressing Ctrl+Shift and double-clicking on one of the INSTALL screens did not work.  So, after a total of 44 minutes (most of it on hold), I was told to call Customer Service at 800-833-6687.  I called them and spent 55 minutes on hold.  When someone finally answered, I told them the story, and they told me to do the exact same thing, press Ctrl+Shift and double-click to get a Challenge Number.  I said, "Technical Support told me to call you guys to get my Challenge Number".  They said "we are Technical Support.  Please contact Customer Service at 800-833-6687 to get your Challenge Number".  I WAS ANGRY!
I than asked to speak to a manager. 10 minutes later, the guy came on and said that his manager was busy on another line!  He then promissed me that I should be able to get to "Customer Support" quickly this time.  After being very direct, stating that I do not want to spend another hour on hold, I asked him that there must be something else that they can do to fix this problem...nope.
So (sorry if you've read this far), I called the number AGAIN and was on hold for 40 minutes...then it turned 5:00PM Pacific Time!  ARG!
SO, THE ANSWER to the problem on getting a Challenge Number.  You must install the software on a trial basis FIRST.  (not during installation as Tech support tried to have me do.)  After installation, start CS4 for the first time, and it will come to Software Setup and ask if you wish to continue using it on a trial-basis, or if you have a serial number for the product.  Put in the serial number for CS4 and click Next.  The next window labled 'Upgrade Check' is where you press Ctrl+Shift and double-click to the the "Challenge Code".  Why Technical Support did not know to do this really bothers me.
Well, tomorrow, I will be contacting Technical Support at 6am to get this working.
And if it was a matter of pressing Ctrl+Shift and double-clicking, why was I required to purchase the software to be shipped?  I could have saved on shipping and tax if I just downloaded it the way I wanted to in the first place.
Well, thanks for reading.  Hopes this helps someone.

  • Lighting Effects in CS6(extended) part of Creative Suite

When I do the Lighting Effects Filter, the effect is present.  However, when I click the OK button, the effect does NOT show.  Please explain.

No, all channels were selected.  But, I think I figured it out ... there was a filter mask also present from a previous smart filter which should have been deleted.
Another question about filters, lighting in particular.  Seems to take "forever" for the effect to render.  I have a Mac Pro with the following configuration:
    Model Name:
    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:
    MacPro4,1
      Processor Name:
    Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:
    2.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    2
      Total Number Of Cores:
    8
      L2 Cache (per core):
    256 KB
      L3 Cache (per processor):
    8 MB
      Memory:
    16 GB
       and the following graphics display:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120:
Chipset Model:    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
      Type:    GPU
      Bus:    PCIe
      Slot:    Slot-1 and Slot-2
Do you think changing the memory or the graphics display would speed things up?

  • Upgrading from PS Elements to CS4 Photoshop Extended

I received my CS4 Design Premium yesterday. When I install it do I have to remove PS Eements? I have all of my photographs organized in PSE. What do you suggest using as an organizer.
    Thanks
    Don

You don't have to remove Elements, in fact it would be most inadvisable.
Bridge is the "organiser" with Photoshop but you will have to export your tags from Elements for PS to recognise them.
Even then I would keep Elements until you are happy with using CS4.

  • Subdivisions not visible in CS4 PHotoshop Extended

I hav been using CS3 without a problem - today I starting testing CS4 and found that I could not get the subdivision lines to display when I Show> Grid.  The main grid displays fine - but no matter what I do, I cant get the subdivision lines to display.
I have the grid set to .25 inch and Subdivisions set to 6.
The same file displays the grid and subdivisions in CS3 Photoshop so I'm pretty sure it's not the file..
    Any ideas here??

Yes I tried turning off OpenGL - but then something even weirder happened.... I had the grid set to .25 and the subdivisions to 2 and the document grid lines switched to GRID lines at .14999... I reopened the preferences and saw that the grid setting had changed on its own to this value....  I was able to reset it back to .25, but then as before I was only getting 4 gridlines per inch with no sudivisions showing....
I use photoshop among other things to create floorplans - the grid lines and subdivisions are critical for me to work in scale....
Grid and subdivision lines are showing correctly when i open the same document in CS3
