Global menu in mate-panel

Did any of you guys manage to get global-menu working with mate-panel? Dunno if it's worth hustling. I'm using openbox, and all I want is to get gnome-panel functionality without the fancy crap.

Using migrate script (https://github.com/perberos/Mate-Deskto … /Migrating) global menu started to compile but could not make due to lack of Vala bindings for Mate.

MATE: Nautilus takes over desktop and mate-panel when installed

Hi.
So I have this issue - when I install Nautilus, it makes itself, not caja, the default, so when I open up one of my favorites from the Places menu in mate-panel, Nautilus, not Caja, pops up, and when I double-click on an icon on the desktop (a folder), Nautilus shows up. I don't want that.
The reason I installed it is because nautilus is a dependency of insync, and there is no way for me to install it WITHOUT installing nautilus.
Is there a way to make Caja the default for everything?

Mac-like menu for MATE

Hi all,
I've just uploaded to the AUR three packages (topmenu-{gtk,gtk3,qt}-git) that implement a mac-like global menu applet for mate-panel. See https://gitorious.org/topmenu/pages/Home for some screenshots and details. It works for gtk2, gtk3 and qt4 applications. There is a problem with gvim, the menu is too narrow (horizontally) and barely visible.
Now, I'm not a mate user (I currently use xfce4) but I thought that it could be interesting for mate users and I'd like to encourage the developer(s?).

KDE Global Menu?

Is there a good one for KDE? I have had a look but I can't seem to find anything useful to me. When I say "global menu" I mean having a plasmoid widget in the panel that shows application menu ("File, Edit, View....") like in Mac OS X. I know that Kubuntu has one that comes with it which is named "File/Menu" or something in the "Add Widget" list. If anyone knows of how to get this under Arch or something like this, I'd be really grateful for the information.... Cheers folks

Kubuntu is quite different from Arch, featuring:
- Automatic installation
- Ubuntu-specific kernel patches and tools
- A Non-KISS approach, and less control over the overall system (a downside of the automatic installer and package manager)
- A set release schedule, rather than a rolling-release plan (less up-to-date packages, but a greater emphasis on stability)
- No AUR, but dozens of Launchpad PPas instead (Of course, the pre-built binaries are nice and convenient).
The global menu is installed by default in the latest version of Kubuntu but, as has been mentioned, it's also available in the AUR for you to build yourself; I use it, and love it. Xbar is also available in the Ubuntu repositories. My own experience regarding Kubuntu is that, for some reason or another, KDE doesn't seem to jibe well with the Ubuntu base. It seemed less responsive to me. Also--and this isn't meant to be a flame, just a fact--Ubuntu focuses almost exclusively on GNOME; the Kubuntu project is contributed to at some degree by Canonical, but by and large is independently maintained and is much less popular. Most of the extra plasmoids and such are only available from kde-look.org/kde-apps.org, rather than the repositories. Hence, you'll likely end up building your own packages and doing most of your own research and maintenance, but without the simplicity and transparency offered by Arch. Feel free to try it out for yourself; it may end up being just what you're looking for, since this is just my experience. However, if you just want the global menu, and feel comfortable with Arch, I'd recommend just installing the AUR package rather than a complete system change. Cheers!

How can Firefox Nightly (V. 22.0a1) Global Menu Bar be disabled in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (When it has been disabled in FireFox Stable (19.0) and Unity (5.18.0))

I have tried various methods of removing the Global Menu Bar from both unity and Firefox before, but they seem to have no bearing on the Firefox Nightly version.
1. Nightly doesn't have the "Global Menu Bar Integration" addon by default.
2. "sudo apt-get remove firefox-globalmenu" does not effect Nightly.
3. trying "sudo apt-get install appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt" and then "sudo apt-get autoremove etc..." for unity doesn't effect Nightly.
4. Menu editor addons don't target this problem.
5. All searchable online help relates to re-inabling the global bar due to earlier Nightly version bugs.
6. It doesn't matter what graphics hardware is used, the results are still the same.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but on hi-res screens this is more than just annoying to always be running back up to the top bar.

How do you increase type size in menu bars and panels?

I recently abandoned my Mac Pro 1,1 for a shiny new Mac Pro cylinder running Mavericks 10.9.5. I have paired it with an LG 27" IPS display. The reason I am using the LG is because I was frustrated that Apple pays absolutely no attention to the pleas of their pro users for a non-reflective display.
And now I find that the type in the menu bars and panels is so small that it literally causes me eyestrain - and that I can't increase the type size. I am older (62), but I still need to use my Mac to survive. Unfortunately, though, it appears that Apple designers have again ignored the needs of their pro users - in this case, older ones.
I have been a graphic designer and a producer of technical and marketing publications for over 35 years, and I appreciate good-looking design - but the real measure of design is usability. Even great-looking design must be user friendly.
So now I am wondering if Apple interface designers are amateurs, or if they just don't give a @#$% about their users.

Yes.
System preferences > Displays > Resolution ...
choose "Scaled" and pick an alternate resolution.
When you do this, text will be drawn as if your screen were actually set to that revolution, but graphics will be drawn full-scale at the native resolution.
This feature was invented for Retina Displays, and has finally been made available for additional displays.

Access viewBundle in Global Menu

I am trying to globalize my global menu xml file. For that I need to access viewBundle.xlf but I am unable to access this file in global menu. Can any one please tell me how to resolve this issue.

Any objections against having each portlet in its own page ? This will allow you set ACLs on a page/sub-page basis
(and hence on a portlet).You can write a navigation portlet(search this forum) which displays the pages in a tree style and each user
only gets to see the pages based on their ACL.
You could also group related portlets under tabs and sub-tabs and set ACLs on them.

Currently we are using a home-grown portal. Based upon user identity, the user has access to anywhere from 1 to hundreds of applications. Basically these are java-based applications that access a ERP system.
We are migrating to oracle portal.
What I want to do is create a provider for each ERP system. Each provider would supply a set of portlets (order search, inventory supply, product catalog). We would convert our existing java-based applications to portlets.
We want to set access control on a per-portlet level. Example, some folks may have access to an order search application, but not the product catalog.
Because there are so many portlets that the user would be able to see, we need a way for the user to navigator through a logical menu structure (Kind of like a content area folder) to work with their available portlets.
Unfortunately, with content areas's, one can not add portlets as items.
Anyone have any ideas on how best to proceed?

It looks like the actual Properties window is corrupt.

CSS only duplicates rendering of fragments not the whole menu. Menus are JSF components that have functions, CSS can't help you with this

[SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...

naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.

so i saw this error message....

the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
[chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.

alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

Jump Menu for Sliding Panels Widget

I have used the sliding panels tutorial to build a 15 page
sliding document inside a new site I am building. It works
briliantly. However I want to be able to use a jump menu to access
any of the 15 pages as well as use the next and previous buttons.
I tried by inserting a form, then jump menu but couldnt put
it all together code wise.
Is it possible to use a jump menu for this widget (Im sure it
must be) and what bits do I put where? Any ideaas greatly
appreciated.

Can I HIDE the view menu in a panel collection?

I have a two column table -- I want the popup and menu features of pc-- less the view as this is unnecessary for this table.
Is there a way to hide this unwanted menu?

Skinning would apply to all refs of this component. There are times instances where I do want view menu displayed.
So my only option is to not use panel collection or roll my own custom component?
Seems there should be an easy way to disable features of pc that I do not what to turn on.

Can't access format & precision menu from front panel

Labview 7 seems to have stopped allowing me to access the format and precision, data range, and properties menus from the front panel. I create a blank VI, drop a numeric control onto the front panel, right click and select format and precision... nothing happens. I can hear the computer thinking about it but no menu pops up. Same for the data range and properties menus. Other front panel objects with different pop-up menus are also not working.
Anyone else run into this problem before? I keep thinking I must be missing something obvious but I can't figure out what it might be.

Problem is fixed. May have been the result of very low available disk space on my system partition. I was down to a few megs. Took off a couple of unused programs and it seems to have corrected the problem.

Update global variable on front panel of another VI

I have a main VI that has the GUI for the operators that has several steps with multiple sub vi's. I want to display the status (where I am in the process) on the GUI. I am using global variables, and the status updates in the global variable front panel just fine, however it only outputs the last value to the operator GUI. I would like it to show the new status at each point in the code. I read something about action engines but I am not sure is that is the correct way. I attached some code just as an example of how I am doing it right now.

i would implement a state machine, in your case. and look into references to bring the info up to the main vi if need to....

The Menu Bar no longer integrates with the Global Menu Bar on Ubuntu

I'm using Gnome Ubuntu 12.04 (I believe it's Unity,) and my Firefox Nightly build's menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc,) appears in a bar of its own.

I have already tried reinstalling firefox-globalmenu many different ways, but it seems that Nightly just doesn't want to accept it. (NOTE: My Beta build works fine.)

It works on my Canonical (18.0a2) Aurora; but I use Mozilla nightly.
I would just assume that there is not at the moment a compatible version of firefox globalmenu add-on available for your nightly.
