Global Performance Cache - Seeking Opinions

Hi Guys -
I am still debating whether to buy CS6. None of the new features interest me nearly as much as the GPC; my decision to upgrade depends a lot on what you guys say about it.
I've used AfterFX long enough to know (since AE7 Pro) that the speed of a RAM preview depends on many factors. Nevertheless I hope that won't preclude you from giving me a general sense of the GPC's effectiveness.
Is the GPC so good that it's worth upgrading for that feature alone? Is it an obvious improvement compared to previous versions, one you appreciate all the time? Or is the benefit minimal, a small step in the right direction but not something that should weigh heavily in my decision to upgrade?
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts, I appreciate it.

I agree with Todd that CS6 isn't as "wonky" as it was at first. I also agree that I can't stand to go back because everything is faster.
This paragraph of yours is very revealing:
For me very often it's just the opposite. I'm asked to make a title sequence, a dvd menu, a wedding video "more interesting please." We talk, I learn what I can, make some sketches, take notes... then I sit down with AfterFX (and Encore, Prem Pro etc.). I tend to use the same effects over and over because I don't want to (or have time to) wait for unpredictable outcomes, and changing even the simplest command, wiggle(3,4) to wiggle(3,5) means the whole comp has to re-render in RAM. It's aggravating.
This is exactly what I mean when I talk about doing motion studies at 1/4 or 1/2 rez. Make your motion experiments on simple layers without effects. I tend to use a lot of pencil sketches shot with my phone, simple shape layers, and text layers all with nothing but motion to figure out what the scene is going to look like.  I'll even often send two, three, or even 10 different motion studies to a client via private Vimeo renders to decide how to proceed with the project. It's the same technique that cell animators and 3D artists use today. Pencil tests traditionally refer to cell animation but I use the term to describe any motion test from any app that does not have the finishing touches applied. Make a low rez 'pencil test' version of the animation to make sure things work before you paint, texture, and clean up the rest for final proof. The GMC in CS6 makes this kind of experimenting extremely fast. It also helps when you are doing the very last stages of your color and effects work on a frame. Both of these comprise less than 30% of my time working on a project and that's why I spend most of my 'creative time' with the caches turned off because they still hold on to an occasional frame or rendered in the background effect that I don't want to see.
You have a distinct disadvantage working with folks that are not in the production business because they are not usually comfortable with 'pencil tests' but there's nothing that says you can't use them to speed up your workflow. Just keep the ones that you like as separate comps, pick your favorite, finish it up and sent the client a nice completed proof. If they don't like it then you've got 2 or 3 or 10 other pencil sketch versions already done tyat you can quickly apply effects to and clean up for final approval.
Wouldn't you rather spend 2 hours on a DVD title checking the timing and motion with 10 versions and 1 hour adjusting the color, effects, and final look than 2 days fiddling around with 3 versions checking every frame at full rez. I'm just trying to give you a few pointers that will let you have some time in your life to do something other than sit in front of your screen and wait for full rez, full effect previews of your work.

  • Global Performance Cache and GPU

Nvidia's website says: The Global Performance Cache feature makes After Effects faster and more responsive than ever before by taking full advantage of the power of your computer's hardware. NVIDIA GPUs allow you to accelerate previews when drawing images to the screen for a highly interactive experience.
does the global performance automatically use the gpu or do you have to enable it? and is this a good reason to invest in a good gpu or not really?

The global peformance cache has nothing whatsoever to do with the GPU or Nvidia. See this for details of the cache features:
    https://www.video2brain.com/en/lessons/global-performance-cache-and-persistent-disk-cache
After Effects uses the GPU for almost nothing. Details are here:

  • AE CS6 Global Performance Cache doesn't appear to be caching

If I play the timeline by hitting the space bar, AE will slowly play through the timeline, rendering as it goes. The rendered portion will have the familiar green bar at the top, but at a certain point my system will run out of memory and I'll begin losing what was first rendered. During this process I'll see small segments of blue that indicate data written to the disk cache, but the segments are small and sporadic, just a frame or two here and there.
I've set up the cache and processor according to the Adobe tutorial, then reviewed the tutorial and re-checked the settings with our IT manager.
After watching one of the video tutorials on AE CS6 it occurs to me that this feature may only work with RAM Preview. So I attempted what was shown in the video: Do a RAM Preview, change something on a layer (moved a path point), new RAM Preview, then UNDO.  I did not get a green bar indicating that AE had re-loaded the previously cached version.
I then closed and reopened the project as shown in the video but did not see a blue bar indicating that the preview had been saved to disk.
Project: 20 second comp with two video and two solid layers. Video = 1080 Canon DSLR video (same video file; one layer has a stationary mask). Solid layers each have one path with the Stroke effect applied to it.
System: HP workstation, 6-core Xeon (hyperthreading OFF), 12GB ECC RAM, nVidia GeForce 460 SE (1GB DDR5), Win7 (64), Intel SSHD (system), 10k HDD (swap and temp files), server-class 7200RPM mirrored data drives, CS6 Production Premium. All drives are defragmented. Tried with Norton Corporate AV ON and OFF, no difference.
As a troubleshooting measure we also tried this on a brand new HP Z420 workstation with Xeon Quad (hyperthreaded), 8GB ECC Ram, Quadro 3800 (or 3850?) graphics, system drive, data drive. Scrubbing through timeline was faster, but disk cache behavior was the same.
My initial impression of AE CS6 is that it feels slower than CS5 and it seems to me that I must be doing something blatantly wrong. Ideas?
    Guy

OK, here's what I've found:  On my workstation as well as our test system (now set up with a dedicated RAID just for the cache), the GPC seems to work when the resolution is set to 1/2 rather than Full (before changing it, on my workstation the resolution was set to Auto and it chose Full).
Is there a way to get GPC working when the resolution is set to Full?

  • Global Olap Cache

    Hello BW Gurus,
We would like to use global olap cache function to optimize the performance of our queries.
We've tried it with using the persistent cache on flat file modus. Unfortunately the size of global cache remains 0 KB, whenever we execute the different queries and system does not generate any flat file.
First of all I would like to ask, what is the relationship between the shared memory size (rdsb/esm/buffersize_kb) and OLAP Cache size. Which one should/must bigger? or this question is irrelevant for to realization of olap-cache.
And could you please tell me, which other parameters should we check?
Debugging with the transaction RSRT (Execute and Debug with Cache Breakpoints) didn't help us.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • LOCAL OLAP CACHE AND GLOBAL OLAP CACHE

what is local olap cache and global olap cache...
what is the difference between ....can you explain  scenario plz...
    will reward with points
    thanks in advance

    Hello GURU
Local cache is specific to a user, before BW 3.0 it was only local cache available...if a user run the query data will come to cache from infoprovider and next time same query will not go to Data base instead it will fetch data from cache memory...this cache will be used only for that particular user...if some other user try the same query it will not pick up dta from cache.....
BW 3.0 onward we have global cache which means several user can access same cache for the same query or data which is related in cache...

  • Web performance caching

We are troubleshooting some odd WordPress behavior. The (offsite) developer suspects that web performance caching is to blame, and I've been trying to figure out how to disable it in OS X Server v10.6.8. I understand that previous versions included this as a clickable option in within the Server Admin WebServer settings, but this is no longer the case.
So, I am wondering (a) if this web performance caching is even an issue at all with this version of OS X Server; and (b) if it is, how I might disable it via Terminal.
Any help/advice appreciated...I should mention that my knowledge of this is extremely basic/superficial (if that isn't already obvious!)...
    Many thanks,
    Laura

the old/original web performance cache was oddly/poorly implemented as a proxy and did cause lots of problems.
Fortunately Apple ditched it in favor of the standard Apache mod_cache modules. The are enabled by default in httpd.conf:
    LoadModule cache_module libexec/apache2/mod_cache.so
    LoadModule disk_cache_module libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so
    LoadModule mem_cache_module libexec/apache2/mod_mem_cache.so

  • SPM2.1/SP04: Performance: Cache Settings

    In BW > t-code RSRT2
We have Cache Parameter set as
    Local Size MB = 100
    Global Size MB = 200
Do you have a recommendation on what it should be from a perf perspective.
In Perfomance white paper there is a ref on page-5 u201CApplication Specific Performance Considerationsu201D > SPM Simple Cacheu2026 and I am assuming it is the same as what we do via RSRT2 in BW.

    Hi Donald
For me the question is not what the actual size of cache is but is the cache effective for your purposes.
I know that your implementation involves large number of concurrent analytical users AND huge volumes of data. So the cache will be big. This SPM cache works simply on the basis of caching the result set of any report. If another report (with the same dimensions, measures, filters, conditions and user locale) is executed then this cache is used and the data is pulled from the cache instead of going back to the BW OLAP engine. If most of your users are actually using the ad-hoc capabilities more than commonalized set of reports, then it is quite possible that instead of the cache aiding performance, it is hindering it. Reason being that all reports in this scenario are unique and the overhead of write to the cache + overhead of checking the cache before passing over the request to OLAP will slow down performance and result in a huge cache size. On the other hand of ther eis a lot of 'reusability' of reports, then even though the cache size is large, is actually beneficial because the end user gets the faster response time.
Now the real question is, do all of your users do the same centralized reports (with a smaller percentage of ad-hoc analysis) or do all of them fire unique requests to the OLAP?
If the answer is the latter and all of the requests are unique from each other, then you actually might want to consider turning off the SPM cache completely. That would save the disk space and actually improve the performance.

  • Consistent, long-standing performance issues -- seeking advice

I have a performance problem with my system. It's a problem that's lasted me years, spanning 3 different computers. This leads me to believe it's not the hardware, but something about my system. As I've moved from computer to computer (as well as when I've reinstalled the system), I've taken pains to skip the Migration Assistant and move over preferences and Application Support one by one, in an attempt to isolate and remove the bug. This always appears to work for a while, then inevitably it goes back to it's same, unresponsive, jittery, occasionally slow self. I'm considering getting a new computer, and I want to try to isolate this problem before I go through the process again.
Here is a list of symptoms. Scroll to the end to read what I've tried to do to fix it.
    DISAPPEARING FINDER
Once in a while, when waking from sleep, the icons on the Finder disappear. The Finder is be usable, and I can create Finder windows, but the icons aren't there. Fixed by force-restarting the Finder.
    MESSY ICON
OIAW, when waking from sleep, the mouse arrow will be replaced with what appears to be random lines and static. Easily fixed by hovering over a text box and forcing a cursor change.
    SAFARI BEACHBALL
I know Safari can be slow as a matter of course, but sometimes mine just GRINDS. I have to either force-quit it or leave it for a while for it to catch it's breath. Some common triggers are Flash embeds (no surprise), big pages, or pages with big photos. Almost always, a page with a lot of photos (like Big Picture), will be impossible to scroll smoothly.
    GARBLED MENUBAR
Occasionally, I'll look up to the menu bar to find it a garbled mess. It appears as if the menus from more than one application are overlain on top of each other. The bar is still useable, and if I click on any menu, it redraws itself properly.
    MOBILE ME IS A ************
This is probably the biggest, most consistent, easiest to replicate problem. When Mobile Me is syncing, I might as well not even try to use the computer. It seems to gobble up all memory, making everything else practically useless. I have it set to sync automatically, but I'm pretty sure I've tried hourly and daily and the same problem occurs. (Also, FWIW, I think it's syncing a lot more than it needs to -- not a lot changes from sync to sync. But I'm not sure how to prove this.)
    SLOW DOCK
If it hasn't been in use for a while, the dock will take a second or two to show (it's positioned on the bottom, hidden).
    FONT CORRUPTION
This hasn't been happening much lately, but for a while, particular base system fonts would suddenly stop working. The files were still there, and active in FontBook, but they wouldn't work in applications. I would have to remove the file from the System/Library/Fonts folder, then the system would recreate it, and it would work again. This would sometimes happen out of the blue.
The one consistently corrupt program in this respect is Google Chrome. It's never been usable -- all characters within the window frame are the weird box with a serif A in the middle. (Strangely, the text in the chrome itself -- bookmark text, tab text, etc -- works fine.
    ITUNES STUTTER
Sometimes the computer is so consumed with whatever it's doing that iTunes will stutter.
    DOCK STUTTER BOUNCE
Often when opening an app, the dock icon doesn't bounce smoothly, but rather stutters up and down.
    TRANSPARENT MENUBAR
Sometimes the background of the menubar disappears. Weirdly, the shadow remains.
    SLOW DASHBOARD
Even after the Dashboard has been loaded for the first time, it can be grindingly slow. It usually zooms into place okay, but activating an module and using it can take 10-20 seconds.
    SLOW SCROLLING
Sometimes, very rarely, the whole computer will have a scrolling seizure -- scrolling a window will become VERY unresponsive, and very stuttery when it finally does respond. Happens to all apps, and quitting the app doesn't appear to fix it. Only restarting (or logging out and in).
    COVERFLOW
Like other things, can be jumpy.
    IN SUMMARY, **** IS SLOW
Basically, sometimes everything just slows. Even the simplest thing is impossible to do, like opening a menu, or finder window, or typing -- it'll stutter and spits out my letters in big chunks.
    *--- THINGS I'VE TRIED ---*
I've added more RAM. When I went from 2GB to 3GB, things appeared to be fast again. That lasted a few days. Later, I went from 3GB to 4GB, with no noticeable change.
I've cleared out my fonts. I deactivated all fonts in FontExplorer except for a couple dozen essentials.
I've verified all fonts in FontBook and removed the offending ones. I fixed any conflicts in FontExplorer.
I've cleared the cache any number of ways, including with Cocktail. Cocktail offers a variety of configurations for cache clearing, and I've tried a bunch of them.
After doing all the above for the first time, I actually thought I had cleared out whatever ugliness was invading my system. Things were opening snappily, and Flash movies were playing smoothly. That lasted a day, and things went back to normal. I've tried it again several times since, and while I've seen some mild improvement, it's been nothing like that one miraculous time.
    *--- WHAT NEXT? ---*
I've seen Apple Store Geniuses about this a few times. It's been very frustrating. What it usually comes down to is: reinstall your system. I did it the first time they suggested it, and the problem always came back. I'm not going to do it again, because it's a major hassle, and obviously doesn't fix the problem.
The other thing they say to do is look at Activity Monitor. I have done that, but I'm not totally clear what to with the information I see, other than to quit more apps to free more memory. Here's the thing: I'm seeing no discernible difference in free memory between a 3GB system and 4GB system. Same slowness, same sliver of free memory in the pie chart.
I've done a lot of looking around online, including in this forum, and the one thing I read consistently is that you want to avoid pageouts. I look at my Activity Monitor and see gigs and gigs of pageouts. What I can't find is tips on how to reduce them.
I've been living with this for a while, because it's just on the threshold of tolerable. It comes in waves, and the times of easygoing make it easy to forget the annoying times. But I'd like to fix it at its root. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
    *--- SCREENSHOTS ---*
    - The garbled menubar
    - An example of very active Activity Monitor with 3GB
    - And one with 4GB
    Thanks!

Erase the hard drive, install 10.6 from scratch, download and install the 10.6.3 vers. 1.1 Combo Updater, then allow Software Update to download and install any other additional software.
Do not yet reinstall any third-party software but take some time to test out everything, In this way you will be able to better now if some problems remain which may be indicative of hardware malfunction.
Since you say these problems have been long standings, I'm surprised you didn't downgrade to Leopard or take the computer in for repair. Letting problems go without solution tends to cause new problems and/or exacerbate existing ones.

  • Should I merge or split photo libraries- seeking opinions

I am seeking input on how to organize my photo libraries. I primarily use iPHOTO, but I do own Aperture. I keep a current iPHOTO library on my Macbook SSD. Due to space constraints, I have created several libraries over the years and offloaded those onto external hard drives.
    So, for example:
I have iPHOTO 2015 on my laptop,
but on external drives I have these 3 iPHOTO libraries: 2104, 2012-2013, 2009 - 2011 (all as "managed" iPHOTO libraries) and
an Aperture library 1940-2009 (a "referenced" library - which includes scans of all my dad's old slides, as well as all my pre-iPhoto pictures.)
Each of these libraries is in the range of 60 -120GB in size. Right now these are scattered over 2 drives, and I want clear plan before I start moving everything to a new 2TB ext drive.
I can't seem to decide if I should merge all my external libraries in Aperture, or if I should continue to keep separate iPHOTO libraries.
Or perhaps just keep the current year on my laptop and then at the end of each year add it to one gigunda external library.
No matter what -  I will want at least the current years photos on the laptop drive.
So basically those of you with more experience - what are your thoughts??
    I have a 2014 15" MacbookPro, Yosemite OS, with 500 GB SSD (<120GB remaining)

The best is to have a single iphoto libray
You want to have a smaller library on your MBP too so do that and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between the single complete library and the portable one on your MBP

  • Roto Brush Performance Issues & Seeking Advice.

    Hello everyone,
First time posting in the forum, so I'll make this as painless as I can and hopefully I can get a hand in figuring this out.
Computer is a brand new Mac Book Pro 15in Retina Display.
    - 2.7ghz Intel Core i7 (quad core)
    - 16gb Ram
    - SSD HD
    - NVidia GeForce GT 650m 1024 mb.
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - After Effects 11.0.2.11
The project that I'm working on right now was shot 1080, 24fps. I cut the project in Premier and copied all of the footage to AE for keying and to ad motion graphics. The project is close to 5 minutes in length, when I noticed the project effecting the performance of my computer I created 4 smaller projects.
I'm using the rotobrush to add back in the underside of the brim, a task which, initially, I didn't expect to be such a problem.
No issues at all with keying, so I duplicated the footage, and began roto brushing the brim at full resolution. For the most part, I've been advancing by 10 frames, which I understand will take longer to propagate, however any selection after the render is completely is leaving After Effects almost completely unresponsive for a minute or two.
Not sure what exactly is going on. I just finished a project last week and used the roto brush quite a bit and had absolutely no problems!
I read every article and post I found on the roto brush tool, as well as a handful of AE Optimization articles and videos.
Not sure what else you might need to know from me, but any input or advice would be great.
Also, if there is a better way to handle adding the underside of the brim back in please let me know. I've tried a few different options, and roto brushing seemed to be the best and quickest option until this!
    Thanks a lot!
    -Joe

It's hard to say what is causing the rotobrush show down but there may be an easy work around. Try something like this:
I applied keylight to the footage, selected combined matte to give rotobrush a nice easy area to work in, then pre-composed the keyed footage and used RotoBrush on the layer to select the underside of the hat. I added a white solid behind the rotoed pre-comp and pre composed that to use as a track matte for the original footage. Keylight was also applied to the original footage but was only used to supress color. Here's the AEP. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

    All,

    Hi Michael,
I would bump RAM up a little bit.
I just ran a test on CPU and Memory usage on my machine using the W2K Server Task Manager. It's not as scientific as some would like but here are my real-world results using the IMB machine described above.
At the beggining of the test, Oracle 9iAS and 9iDB were running as services using default configurations and memory usage was at 440 MB and CPU was at 5%. I then started JDeveloper 9.02 which briefly pegged CPU and memory usage climbed to 612 MB. I then built a Business Components Package (BC4J Model) based upon 12 tables in my 9iDB which took 45 seconds, memory usage jumped 628 MB and CPU was pegged for most of that time. Then I used BC4J-JSP Wizard to create a Business Components Application (BC4J-JSP) based upon the Business Components Package I just built. This took 23 seconds, memory remained at 628 MB and CPU was again pegged. Then I compile both BC4J model and BC4J-JSP app with took 35 seconds, memory jumped to 653 MB and again CPU was pegged. I then started the BC4J-JSP app within JDeveloper using the imbedded OC4J server which took 45 seconds come up with IE5.5, memory usage climbed to 695 MB. Lastly I test the BC4J-JSP app by selecting "MyTable Browse" (one of the choices from the BC4J-JSP app) which took 10 seconds to start, memory jumped to 705 MB and CPU never pegged.

Personally, I would keep using what you have now and wait to see what the next MacBook Pros will be like. If they come out with one with a quad-core processor, I would get one of those.
