Global Roaming in Canada

I'm travelling to Canada, and when I called Verizon, I was told that for $10, I could get 1000 minutes and use data as if I was inside the U.S.  I signed up for the plan, but now I'm looking at their list of global features, and I don't see any reference to any sort of plan that looks like this.  What exactly did I sign up for?  Is it actually true that I can use my data as if I was in the US?  (I have an old "NATIONWIDE TALK SHARE 700" plan.that comes with 2 GB).
I really don't want to come home to a giant bill.
Matt

I share your concerns, matt31415! I don't want you returning to a large bill. What did you sign up for? The answer lies in reviewing your account. Please look for a direct message that I've sent you. We'll review it in private.

  • Is roaming in canada and global roaming activated already?

    Hi
I have the $60 unlimited plan for each 30 days. We are planning to go to Canada and then for a cruise. I was curious if I need to activate the roaming for Canada and global (at sea: provider: cellular at sea) or it is already activated. I tried to do it online and it saying I am not the account manager.

  • Lumia 900 crashing/freezing while roaming in Canad...

My Lumia 900 (AT&T) is crashing and/or freezing while roaming in Canada. It appears to stop doing this if I have the Data roaming turned off. It has also done this before while roaming in India. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Any words of advice? I travel frequently for business and need my data connection while roaming internationally. If the phone continues to behave like this, I might be forced to go back to the iPhone. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, I am experiencing the same issues. Was wondering if your hard reboot worked?
Hi. 'Same' may not be the exactly similar. Please provide us details regarding your case. Does it happen randomly or when accessing certain apps on the phone? What connections are enable on the phone (Bluetooth, tap+send, data connection, WiFi)? How about the background apps running on the phone?
Ensure that the software of the phone is updated. Latest update is the 'Black Update' currently rolling out globally:  http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/
Aside from the phone's software, it's also important to check that all system apps are up-to-date. Please refer here: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/Nokia-Windows-Phone-8-App-Updates/td-p/1640082
    Hi, mmansour.
To verify, the issue starts after updating the phone to Black. Correct? Or have you been encountering the issue prior updating the phone? After updating the software to Black, make sure that all system apps are updated as well. You may refer to the above link for the system apps.

  • Cannot receive Texts while Roaming in Canada

    Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to be, but I'm having a hard time getting an answer or a solution to this.
I recently got a Samsung Galaxy 5. I spend a good amount of time in Canada and have had no problem sending/receiving texts while roaming there until I got this new phone. When I had my iPhone 4s, everything worked just fine. But upon "upgrading" to this phone, it doesn't allow me to send or receive texts unless I call someone. Is this normal? Is there a way to fix it where I don't have to call?
I set my phone to allow global data roaming, though I do not use it as my phone is always connected to WIFI.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I have had no problem texting in the US. As I have said before, it is only
while I have been ROAMING IN CANADA. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling every 3rd party texting app I have on my phone, and even tried
to use both of the horrendous texting apps that actually came with the
phone. Also like I said before, it simply has a problem RECEIVING text
messages. I can send them just fine. If I do not make a call, I will never
receive texts. I type the entire number when sending a text, this includes
area code because I'm ROAMING and it would FAIL to send to the correct
sender if I was daft enough to not put the area code in front of the
number. I cannot call you for support because that would expend the
remainder of the Canadian minutes I bought specifically for this trip.
What is terribly strange to me, is before, when I was using my iPhone 4S, I
had NO problems sending or receiving texts while roaming, and even received
a message describing both texting and roaming data rates while I stay in
Canada. I did not receive any such message while on this trip with my new
Samsung Galaxy 5. Not that I have been able to receive any sort of text
    lately...

I should mention that if you are deadset on using a Mac, then you can run Windows 7 or 8 in Parallels. You will find about a 10% speed reduction using a VM emulation. You will also need to have at least 8 GBs of RAM in your Mac to assure optimum performance of both OS X and Windows. Do not install a later version of Windows than is supported by your software.

  • Global roaming connection issue

    Hi
I have global roaming activated on my phone.
Although I can see several cellular networks to connect to I am not able to.
I have tried turn g my phone on and off, turning airline mode on and off, doing a hard reset and I have reset my network settings. With no luck.
My service provider said that the networks that I can see should allow me connection.
Any ideas on what else I can try?
    Thank you

I had the same problem when I was on holiday on Cyprus. The first day I had a connection. The second day, when I turned my iPhone on, I wasn't able to connect to any provider though the providers were listed. I tried all the things you tried (reset phone, reset network settings etc.) but nothing worked.
Then suddenly a few days later, my iPhone connected to the local network! The next day I deliberately turned off and on my iPhone again and the problems were back. However, after a few tries manually selecting a provider, I had a connection again. I asked my telephone company in the Netherlands what the problem could be, but they had no answer.
When I returned home, everything worked fine again. I also tested my iPhone in Germany and it worked OK there as well.
So, I don't know what happened on Cyprus and I can't reproduce the problem at home. I thought I share this because I'm still anxious to know what the problem was.

  • 3G UM150 modem keeps insisting on doing Global Roaming. I'm in suburban Phoenix

I don't understand why my 3G modem insists it can only connect as a Global Roaming connection that will cost me more than $20/MB for service. I'm in Buckeye, Arizona, outside of Phoenix. It is neither remote, rural, nor in a foreign country. I don't understand why it keeps showing a Global Roaming indicator on screen with a warning saying data service will be charged at $20+ per megabyte. What's going on???

    Sharon55612,
That certainly does seem quite odd for that area. I've been there and you aer correct, it is none of the above mentioned. When did this start happening? Has there been any recent updates done on the device?

  • Global Roaming

I have a Nokia 2310. I am going to the USA and was told I can't use this phone or any mobile from Australia. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so what is the best phone to buy for global roaming?

Both the phones you listed are quad-band gsm. I am not sure but I think they are excluded from that list because even though they are quad-band gsm, the E52 is only dual-band 3g and the N97 it only tri-band 3g. This just means that the phone will work globally on the gsm network but not always on the 3g networks.

  • Roaming in Canada, Niagara Falls

I've been reading different and confusing reviews.  What is the coverage while visiting Niagara Falls?  I read that I could text, call US without roaming.  I read that if I get too far from the river/falls I won't have coverage.  If we are traveling there, will we be charged roaming fees/charges?  Can we text one another while there without charges?  Can we call home to family back home without roaming charges?  Where does the line end at US border and how far in Canadian boarder until we are charged roaming rates?

        Hello bwatlas
These are all very good questions that should be asked before travelling to avoid any roaming charges. Once you are past the American boarder any calls or data usage will be consider as roaming charges.  While you are in Canada you can still text without any additional charges, as long as they are not iMessages since these are ran thru data.  We have a great Canada/Mexico plan that gives you 1000 minutes to use while you are traveling in Canada. What plan do you currently have?  Check out our Global Support page for additional information: http://vz.to/17KseUf

  • Huge Global Roaming charges and no alerts!!

Recently traveled to London for a week and was wary of making sure the iPhone would work and not have crazy fees.  Talked to VZW customer service before leaving and they assured that the phone was set up to work fine and would provide text message alerts for data usage that exceeded $25,$50,etc.
Got to London, phone did not work at all.  Spent a very frustrating 1st two days there trying to get it to work with VZW telling me it should work fine.
Finally got a service rep on the phone and he went through and made some 'changes' on VZW's end which made the iPhone work in London.  Had a great trip after that but then I got the bill--> $837 in data roaming charges for 41Mb of data!  Did not get a single data use $ alert message on this the whole trip.
I could not be more unhappy at this bait and switch.
    -Mike.

    MikeP111
What exactly was the bait? Where did they switch? Did you verify that a global data plan was added to your account? If not, the $837 in data makes sense as it's over $20 per MB.

  • Global Roaming, when will Verizon step up for their customers!!!!

Is there any one that works at Verizon that knows anything at all about the Galaxy S3? Customers have been asking to enjoy the same benefits as other users of the Galaxy S3 on other carriers. When will Verizon get with the program? Someone from Verizon come forward and give us some straight answers on this device such as why they chose to lock the bootloader down, why not make it a Global Ready device from the start. Unfortunately for them it will not be soon enough to keep me as a customer. I am glad that our Company gives us the choice to decide our carrier and I will make the correct choice in October. Thank you Verizon for the memories (painful!). Knowing Verizon the answers will come to these questions as quickly as their updates roll out! Good luck to all that stay with Verizon.

Google your request. VZW has stated many times why the boot loader is locked down

  • I'm using an app to text because I'm roaming in Canada, I'm on wifi. Will it cost the other person back in the USA roaming?

I'm trying to text my friends beck in the USA but I'm not sure if it's costing them money because I'm on wifi, I don't think it will but I'm trying to be sure because its 25 cents a text for them.
    Thanks
    -Mike

It depends upon the the device they have and app. Typically if they are using the same app and are on wifi it is free. However, if they are using a cellular connection is will cost them.

  • Misinformation re: Canada & Mexico service

Recently I went on vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  I have been there before, last year, and had tried to rely on WiFi only to get emails and send them.  Unfortunately, whenever the WiFi got briefly interrupted or dropped out, and when I forgot to go to Airplane Mode briefly when moving around, I ended up going into Global Data roaming, which is EXTREMELY expensive.
So, this time, I called in to Plan Change customer service a two days before the trip to add Mexico to my Shared Plan with four lines.  I had read about the $15.00 monthly service plan adding those two countries, and wanted to see if I could get it for all three phones, and possibly for my MiFi mobile router.
To my delight, the rep said she could add the service instantly and it would be effective before we got there.  I pressed her repeatedly about how many minutes; how many text messages; and how much data.  I also decided I would reduce my data plan to 4GB from 6GB as I never use anything like the full amount of data.  She assured me I would have all three services on all lines, and even calculated how much my prorated talk & data time would be with all the plan changes.  Here's what I wrote down in a text document at the time:
    Call of January 21, 2013 @ 3:42 PM until 3:48 PM
01-13-2013 to 02-12-2013; cycle ends the 12th of
    every month.
    Billing System password:
[you guys don't need this info]
      - 699 Mex to Mex & Mex to US minutes, this cycle.
    - 4 GB data rather than 6 --
    Pro-rated int'l data 2.933 GB until 02-13-2013
CDMA everywhere in U.S. & Mexico - no analog!  "
I asked her about roaming, any analog roaming (I have been burned by that one in the past--it's pretty much dead now, at least in Mexico) and ANY additional charges, and was assured that there would be none as long as I didn't exceed my 699 minutes of talk time, which I was sure I wouldn't and didn't come anywhere near using up.
Once in Mexico, sitting on the beach, both I and my spouse starting getting scary text messages from Verizon stating
"You have incurred $50.[something] in Global Roaming charges.  Turn data roaming off or call +1-908-559-4899 to make plan changes."  After a quick discussion, we called Verizon at the special Global 908 number to see what was what up.
Q: "Do I have international data service?  From when I changed my plan on the 21st?"  A: "Yes, I see that here."  Q:  "Is that per line or something?  Or is it shared on all lines?"  A:  "Let me check that, sir.  [pause] no, that would be shared on all lines." Q: "Why am I getting these text messages?  What is wrong?"  A:  "I am not sure.  You shouldn't be receiving them.  I will make a note in your account that you called in.  If they keep coming in, call in again."
Sure enough, we kept getting them, and I called in again and spoke briefly to someone else, and got pretty much the same story, and was told to check my bill when I got home.
The day after I returned, I got this lovely text message: " VZW FREE MSG: As of 01/26/2013, Mobile 310-6**-**** exceeded $250 in data roaming charges. Data will be blocked after $500.  Here's how to manage usage. "
I log into My Verizon and get the message that my service will be turned off if I don't pay immediately!  THANKS, VERIZON!
I called into Customer Service, hit plan change, and talked to a rep who fumbled around, and then said "Sir, you don't have and data coverage in Mexico."  What the f***?  How can I have been told three times I do, and I don't.  After getting immediately incensed, I asked in an agitated but polite stream of words the summary of above, and how am I supposed to get this service?  Oh, she says, it's $25 extra for data in Mexico.  What utter **.  Is it for all lines?  Oh, no, it's per line.
Now, this said, somebody somewhere set me up for this service on my 310 iPhone 4S, because all the roaming charges were billed to the other line.  But NO ONE told me it was going to cost an extra $25, and they all told me my spouse's line was covered, which turns out to be wrong.  Naturally I had to demand to speak to a manager, and after 5 minutes of stalling, she agreed to back date the service.  This is what it turned out to be if you want these services:
    January 29th, 2013 @ 10:20 AM until 10:46 AM
    Cynthia--manager.  Back-dated int'l data plan to 1/21/2013.
Contrary to what THREE separate Customer Service reps told us (January 21 '13 @ 3:42pm for 16 minutes) AND from Mexico 1/24/2013 at approx. 12 noon Central Time & again ??? same day? Next day?), Int'l Data is PER LINE & $25.00 per line. [!!!] 310-663-7170 & 310-927-9189 back-dated to 1-21-2013 per plan change manager Cynthia.  Never told how much the data allowance is....& does it count against Shared Plan 4GB? "
Now I am sitting here wondering what nightmares I will have in the next billing cycle and if some one will decide that wiping it all away (which she seemed to do) is not OK and they will just add some massive charges to my next billing cycle.
My monthly bill is painfully high as I use my phones for work and need great service.  At $250 plus a month, they have to do better.  BE CAREFUL...the reps just don't seem to understand how these Share Plans work in Mexico and the U.S.  And I would NEVER use Verizon outside North America/CDMA--you should buy a throw away phone and use pay-as-you-go in Europe and everywhere else you can do that, to avoid getting screwed.
No matter how many times you ask the critical questions, you don't get correct answers, and even the letter they sent me about my new plan states things that at odds with the plan I was promised (I have seen no text roaming charges--good, sice that was supposed to be included, and their letter says, Oh, NO it's 50 cents a text in a tiny font footnote--no one in Customer Service seems to know that, and I haven't been billed for them which suggests texts ARE included in the Mexico/Canada plan--maybe you get texts thrown in if you have a costly high-service multi-line plan like I do.  ***?).
I really hope that calling in and reviewing how I was misled did work and I won't have endless hassles going forward with billing.  Aaargh.

Yes, I almost broke down on the phone today with customer service, because I had to pull out of them the information I needed to make a decision as to get the 25.00 fee for data usage. Once I understood it, I felt a great relief! You see, the important thing we all need to know is the difference between what is termed 'data usage' and actual talk time phone call old fashion stuff whereby you dial a number and actually talk to another human. Two totally different things. Data is internet, weather, email, etc.
Also know that you can easily turn off 'data roaming' before you leave the USA, and you will still be charged 99 cents per minute of int'l calls, and yes 50 cents for texts, but No Roaming. I know, so confusing, don't cry.....
To make you feel better, my husband and I have been driving to Mexico for 20 years, and I remember not communicating with my folks here in USA for weeks at a time. A family member could have died and I wouldn't have any way of knowing. (Or I could have died, and THEY wouldn't have known....) Talk about incomunicado!

  • $1400 Roaming Bill

About a month ago my family and I travelled to Mexico for vacation. We enrolled in "NATIONWIDE PLUS MEXICO FAMILY SHAREPLAN® 1400 - NATIONWIDE PLUS MEXICO FAMILY SHAREPLAN®." Which included 1400 minutes and Unlimited texting. There are two smartphones and two regular phones on my account. One smart phone and one regular phone were charged $500+ each for Text Global Roaming - Sent and Text Global Roaming - Recieved. What puzzles me is that we purchased the Mexico plan that included unlimited texting and I don't see why we're being charged $500+ for two lines for texting if we've already purchased a plan that covers it.
I do not want to pay this $1400+ bill but I already talked to a Verizon representative yesterday and they said we have to pay for it.
Is there anything I can do or tell Verizon that I was covered for these texts? Any actions I can take?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I looked at the Mexico plan and for texting it states the following:
Text Messaging DetailsVerizon Customer in Texting to Price
    U.S.
    Participating network in: Mexico, Canada
Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands
    Included with messaging plan
    Mexico
    U.S.
    $0.50/message sent (per recipient)
    $0.05/message received
You can text all you want to participating plans in Mexico FROM the US, but you are charged when in Mexico texting TO the US. But $1400??? You had to use data and ALOT of it.
And data packages are a separate add on for the Mexico plan and they do not cover much before overages kick in.
