Global 'Sound on/off' option?

Hi;
Is there a way of making a global 'sound on/off' button that will work across the entire set of articles in an app? or do you have to have a button on each article, that controls just that one article?
thankyou

Hello, since nobdy else has replied...
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

My nephew put the Hallmark Channel on my computer and I cannot get the sound turned off.

Is this a separate application? Where did your nephew install it? If you do a force quit (command - option - esc) does it show up so you can force quit it?

  • MPEG2-DVD / Sound cut off *urgent*

    Hi everyone
I have a very urgent problem which makes me lose my hair...
We have 190 minutes of 1920x1080 25p footage which we edited in Premiere Pro.
I then proceed to export the files into MPEG2-DVD using 2-pass VBR with 1,65/4,2/6.25 bitrate (according to an online bitrate calculator).
I multiplex the sound into the MPEG-2 file.
When I import the timeline into Encore, it correctly tells me "do not transcode".
BUT the sound cuts off short of the video. It does it for every chapter. I cannot 'extend' or 'pull' the sound to the length of the video.
First chapter is 24:19, sound cuts off at 23:15.
Anyone got an ìdea what I am doing wrong?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Michael

I'm in complete agreement with Jeff here as well - selling PAL discs in the US will sooner or later cause problems.
    Priobably sooner.
In the old days you would not get the player to even load them - it would throw a "no disc" or another error of some description - and even when you did find the odd rare one that would load them, the TV systems would make sure you got a garbled image, or a B&W one. These days a good Universal Player will usually load all types (although again a regular DVD player will most likey still not go for it) but you will still have TV system issues.
The problem is the mains frequency - PAL (Europe) uses 625 lines and 50Hz whereas NTSC uses 525/60, which effectively means PAL runs at 25 frames/second & NTSC at 30 frames/second. The 2 are incompatible. Most PAL players can handle both formats either by outputting NTSC discs as PAL-60 or even genuine "on the fly" conversions to 525/60 NTSC.  The process is not straightforward either - the player is handling scaling, temporal conversion and object motion analysis all at once (Hence why most PAL setups output NTSC as PAL-60 instead of pure 525/60 NTSC) and additionally the audio speed must be adjusted (remember DVD is a multiplexed set of VOB files, not separate streams) to conform to the different display rate - which may also prevent the use of a digital connection!
This type of conversion is much, much less compatible the other way around. Most NTSC players still cannot play PAL discs (although as I have said a Universal BluRay player may do this) and only a very small number can convert 625/50 PAL to 525/60 NTSC.
Let us now talk about MPEG audio & why it is not recommended to use it. This gets complex.....
MPEG audio is a multichannel format using perceptual encoding at 16-bit 48KHz. MPEG-1 Layer II and MPEG-2 BC (backwards compatible) are the only allowed forms and the MPEG-2 that is allowed - BC - is a matrixed format, not discrete, in surround use. Use of this type (MPEG audio) was only ever optional in NTSC, never mandatory (so that is one big problem) and the other big problem is that MPEG-2 audio is only allowed in BC mode. Why is this evil? Take a seat & let me try to go through it.
Because MPEG-2 audio decoders were not available at the time of DVD introduction, MPEG-1 was the only decoder available so that was what got used. As a result, the only permissib;le type of MPEG-2 allowed is BC, which is a matrixed stream type (the 5 main channels are matrixed into Lt/Rt stereo streams) and then encoded in the normal MPEG-1 Layer II format for DVD. The advantage to this is that a multichannel stream can be phase matrix encoded so that it will also play on a stereo system. MPEG provides pre-determined matrixing formulas depending on the intended audience - one is a conventional stereo signal, another is designed to deliver a Dolby Surround compatible (*not* Dolby Digital - that is something very different) system that re-creates the centre channel fronm the left/right channels in addition to a single rear (or surround) channel (Nerdy Note - this is actually a development of the old SQ Quadraphonic matrixing system, set up for LCRS instead of L-R-Ls-Rs). Additional discrete channel information, plus the LFE channel, is encoded in an extension stream so that an MPEG-2 decoder (not MPEG-2 Audio) can recreate 6 separate signals. Because of the necessity to be backwards compatible with MPEG-1 decoders the centre & surround channels that are matrixed into the 2 MPEG-1 channels (left & right) are duplicated in the extension stream. This allows the MPEG-2 decoder to subtract those signals from the matrixed signals, leaving the original Left & Right channels. All this adds an overhead of approximately 32kbps, making it rather inefficient.. The original 2-channel MPEG-1 encoding process was not developed with matrixed audio in mind and therefore may actually remove surround detail. Also, the process tends to expose coding artefacts as well so coupled with the whole shebang only ever being optional in NTSC 525/60 systems means that to use this as your solitary stream type is actually out of spec for 525/60 regions & players may well take one look at the disc & output...................in short, just a picture. And if that picture is 625/50 PAL, quite possibly not that either.
    Audio support in DVD.
MPEG-2 audio is basically not supported except in BC moide, which hands everything over to MPEG-1 decoders. This is not good. It is not efficient, it can be riddled with artefacts & it is not supported by fiat in NTSC regions, only optionally. If it is your sole stream you will run into trouble sooner or later.
I hope this helps, and I think I will go away & write a little article about this as it keeps cropping up every so often..

  • Sound drops off when using hdmi outport to connect computer to an AV reciever

Satellite M640,I5 2410 processor, windows 7HP. After about three minutes the sound drops off when connected to the av reciever through the hdmi outport. If I touch the trackpad the computer reconnects for another three minutes and  then disconnects. If I touch the the trackpad about every two minutes the computer stays connected indefinetly. This problem does not occur if I use the computer to play an audio CD. Any fix suggestions.

    Hi peter,
try to repair your permission by open application folder > utilities > disk utility > repair permission.
It should fixed the unexpectedly quit for several applications.
And try to get latest info from Griffin sites, maybe this one will help too:

ps: why not try macbook built in microphone?
    Good Luck.

  • Sound drops off after 15 minutes after upgrading from windows 7 to Windows 8.1.

I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8.  Then, from Windows 8 to Wimdows 8.1.   When playing a Movie I've downloaded from iTunes it plays normally for a good while.  Then, after 15 minuites or so the sound drops off. If I close and reopen iTunes it plays again for about the same time.  I had to do that five or six times to get through a movie.   I've tried installing the latest sound drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling the latests iTunes with no luck fixing the issue.  I have my PC connected to my TV via HDMI cable.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
You could download and install the trial version of Photoshop Elements 12.
For your serial number, try this:-
Go to Adobe.com and there should be a button to Manage account - click on that and sign in with your Adobe Id.
Click on View All under Plans & Products
    Click on View other products
After a short while, you should see your Photoshop Elements appear and you can expand it to see your serial number.
The serial number can be entered into the trial version to activate it.
Do you have your catalog and images?

  • Embedded Sounds Cut off Early

This is a repost of a question I oriinally posted here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11321441/embedded-sounds-cut-off-early .
I figure this is one someone who knows the compiler part of Flash intimately will need to answer (if there is a good answer--if not I probably need to file a bug report).
I have a combined Flash Builder/Flash Pro project. Because of the hassles involving in maintaining sound assets on the timeline, my sounds are all embedded into Class files, like:
    [Embed (source="/mp3/Welcome_01_V.mp3", mimeType="audio/mpeg")]
    private static const WELCOME_1:Class;
These files are then referenced by the base Classes for the symbols that need them, embedded for Actionscript on Frame 10 (because the second frame label is on Frame 10 to give space for you to read the first one).
What I'm finding is that a few of these Sounds don't play all the way through, but the SoundChannel dispatches the "soundComplete" event, and its final position matches the Sound's length.
All sounds are converted from wav to mp3 at 44kHz / 16 kbps using dbPowerAmp. I faked out the compiler to avoid a reference to Flex by including a dummy SoundAsset that extends Sound.
I don't know what other steps to take to debug this. Is there a way to figure out whether the problem is on the compile side or on the run side?
    More things I have tried:
Looked at the Size report: The nonworking sounds were smaller in their embedded form than the source mp3
Got rid of my own BitmapAsset and let Flash link in the Flex Framework and do whatever that does (definitely worse)
Dropped the encoding from 44 kHz to 22 kHz (no improvement or worse)
Dropped the bit rate to 8kbps (the lowest dbPowerAmp, the tool I use, supports). This usually helps somewhat, but I still usually use a word or two from the end of the file
Dropped both parameters in the encoding. This helped a few that just dropping the bit rate didn't, but not all files. Plus it sounds tinny.
Note that the file size and length of the Flash file does not seem to be what causes this--I have had 50k+ files that did fine, yet had a problem with files < 20k.
    Thanks!

Have you tried disabling Omnisphere, just for a test, to see if the problem is occurring with just the built-in plug-ins?  Another thing to try, if you haven't already done so go ahead and display the CPU meter.. you to this in the app's Display preference pane. Then double click on the CPU side of the meter in the toolbar. This will open a CPU monitoring window... and you can instantly see how much CPU each plug-in is using... assuming it's a CPU overload that's causing it.
Not sure if this is how you are using it, but if for instance you play something with Patch A and when you switch to Patch B you're either holding sustain or you want the sound to crossover into Patch B so it tails nicely... at this point you have both Patch A and Patch B active at the same time. If both those patches have 2 Omnispheres you actually talking about 4. Maybe this isn't exactly what you're doing, but you get the idea.
Can you stand to have a slightly bugger size?  Maybe try 256. Oh, and definately quit all other apps and perhaps turn off airport.

  • September 2011 MacBookAir4,2 1.7 GHz White noise even when sound turned off

Since new this MacAir has had a white noise like a tv not tuned in even when sound is off. Gets worse as it gets warmer. Seems to be getting worse then ever.(summer). Usually connected to a Thunderbolt Display and makes noise only when display is attached. Disconnect the display and the noise goes quite after a few minutes till display is again attached.
    Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I think it is the Cooling Fans making the noise and the Thunderbolt connector gets hot after a few minutes.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try checking the hard disk for errors just in case.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Verify. Of Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Also, while you have Disk Utility open, Repair Disk Permissions, reboot and see if the sound anomaly still exists.

Try double tapping the screen with three fingers to return to normal size. If it works go to settings> general> accessibility> zoom> off.

  • When the sound turns off on my macbook, the miniplug stereo port emits a wildly uncontroled load leading to noise.

When the sound turns off on my macbook and my macbook pro, the miniplug stereo port emits a an enormous 'pop', i.e. wildly uncontroled load leading to noise. Goundline hum follows. I am running OS 10.6.6. I have noted previous threads noting the same problem on OS 10.4.x and 10.5.
How do I stop my mac from trying to ruin my stereo and speakers every time I connect them?

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).
    Good luck,
