Globalisation / Localisation of Robohelp Files

I am currently producing a help file for an ECM system which
needs to be globalised. I know I can change the language of the
project, but I need to be able to include all languages into the
one project, so that the language of the users computer is matched
by the robohelp file language file. This is a requirement from the
powers that be. The actual text is not translated by us, just
having the ability to change the language is required.
Taa.

Is is possible for the end user to change the robohhre.lng
file and html files themselves? (Although this is an easy way out).
Also, upon further instructions from the powers that be, "We
need to make sure that depending on the browser locale setting it
will dynamically pull the appropriate languages help file, and fall
back to the second/third language choice if unavailable."
Is this scenario possible? As the application it is for
checks the browser locale and chooses an appropriate language.
Thanks.

When I zip, try to send file attachment, then try to unzip all I

Depending on the zip program you use, the zip folder may look
almost exactly the same as a regular folder. So perhaps you are
opening the xpj that is in the zip file, rather than the extracted
    one?
    Perhaps try the following:
    * put the zip file in c:\temp
    * extract to c:\mytestproject (or something else completely
different from the location of the zip file)
    * make sure you navigate to c:\mytestproject to open the xpj.

  • Patching a RoboHelp file

Is there a way to patch a RoboHelp file with updates rather
than replacing an entire help system each time an update is made?
This is a distribution issue rather than a technical issue.

    Welcome to the forum.
Knowing what type of help you are talking about would be
    useful. CHM or webhelp...
I am guessing webhelp as a CHM is a single file so obviously
you have to send the whole file. With webhelp, if you are
publishing to the server, then there is an option to only publish
    changed files.

    Hi there
I'm as curious as Leon is. But I'll be happy to list some things.
All of these are assorted files that manage your project. You reall don't want to be making changes to these without good reason. You may end up confusing RoboHelp and possibly corrupting parts or all of your project.

  • Can't open old RoboHelp file

I have an old.mpj file given to us from a client that I'm trying to open with the trial version of RoboHelp 8. I get the error "Projects created before version 2.23 cannot be opened with this version of RoboHelp. Call Macromedia technical support for assistance opening this project."
Does anyone have any ideas on how to open this file or extract the data from it? I'm very new to this!
    Thanks,

NM. I didn't realize I could just decompile the chm file with HTML Help Workshop.

  • RoboHelp files not working on network in Windows 7

    Hi,
my company is in the process of upgrading to Windows 7 and we have a few applications which use RoboHelp
(.chm) files for help which are stored on the network.  In XP everything worked fine but now all the pages display "page cannot be found".  If I copy the files down to my c: drive then they open fine.  Most were created in previous versions of Robohelp so I thought that might be the problem and upgraded one to RoboHelp 7 but that didn't change anything.  I read in other posts that there are some issues with RoboHelp on the network, but I can't avoid that..  Is there some network settings that can be tweaked or is this perhaps fixed in RoboHelp 8?  I can't put forth a request to my boss to upgrade unless I have solid proof it will work..

    Hi there
I think Colum misundersood you. I understood you to ask if this is fixed in version 8 meaning "RoboHelp version 8" not Windows 8.
The issue isn't anything really related to RoboHelp. The issue is with Windows. The fact is, for years now CHM files haven't worked when placed on network drives.
If you look at Peter Grainge's topic on the subject at ( http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/chm_mspatch/896358.htm ) you will see that he is linking to Microsoft Knowledge Base articles dated June 2005. So this change was initially implemented by Microsoft five years ago and you are just now encountering it.

  • Changing RoboHelp File Association

    TCS5 | Windows 8.1
My laptop's been rebuilt, so I've installed TCS5 and then re-installed TCS4. However, because I've done it in this order RoboHelp projects are defaulting to RH10 when opened, as opposed to RH11. I've tried changing the association through the usual "Open with" option, but it doesn't make any difference. Is there a way I can force projects to open in RH11 by default without having to uninstall everything and starting again?
    Thanks
    Jonathan

Right-clicked the .XPJ, selected Open with..., clicked More options, scrolled to the bottom of the popup window and selected Look for another app on this PC, and then browsed for the Robohelp 11 .EXE. I think what's confusing it is that the both the RH10 and RH11 .EXEs are called RoboHTML.exe, but just in different folders. It's like it isn't recognising the subtle folder difference, e.g. between C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 10\RoboHTML\RoboHTML.exe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 11\RoboHTML\RoboHTML.exe.

  • Strange new RoboHelp file types

There are some weird file types showing up in my RoboHelp
project: trb, .trf, .tridxl, .trk, .trl, .trs., .trt, .trtocl,
    .trv.
I've seen two postings in the RoboHelp forums, but no one
seems to know why they're appearing. I found them with Beyond
Compare when I was getting ready to check them into source control
    (Microsoft Visual Studio).
Does anyone know what these are? They didn't show up in
Adobe's knowledgebase or in a Google search.

I'm not positive, but I think I saw some of these before.
They were temporary files that appeared during output generation.
When RH was done generating the output files, the files
    disappeared.
If I'm recalling/identifying these files correctly, then
maybe that means your output generation didn't terminate cleanly. I
wouldn't put those files into source control.

  • Error messages: Robohelp 9 - RHFrameStyleMappings.apj and .cpd files

I am updating an old Robohelp file to version 9 and I received the following warning messages.
    Error in reading RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file
Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to load database for - Custom Casualty.cpd

    Hi there
Depending on how old you are updating from, you may need to take the following step.
If you aren't using Frame, try this. Create a new blank project in a different folder. This should create a new and empty RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file. Then copy the file to your project where it's posting the error.
Now open the upgraded project and see if all is well.

  • Robohelp 9 Corrupt CPD When Moving Files

    Hello all,
I made a brand new file in Robohelp 9. I made it locally and moved the entire folder to the fileshare. When I tried to open it from the fileshare, I got the error that the file was corrupt and to delete the CPD file. I delete the CPD file and that fixes the issue. However, whenever we move it from the fileshare to our local drive or back again, the file gets corrupted again. Every time.
This happens to me and to other folks on my team. We had the same issue with another file a few weeks ago.
Is there some trick to moving the folder that I'm missing? We are on the cusp of building a much bigger project so I can't afford to lose my project to a corrupt file.
I made a folder called ProjectSourceFiles and put the robohelp files all inside that one folder. We are moving the big folder.
    Thoughts?

You cannot run projects from a network other than with source control. The reason is explained in Snippets on my site.
You can store the projects on a network for backup purposes but you cannnot run them from there. If there will only one person working on any project at any one time, use the project locally and run a simple backup routine at the end of each day or overnight. I prefer to create a zip file and copy that. The backup adds some date information if we need to step back.

  • File path lost while importing to RoboHelp

    Hi
I am using FM11 and RH10 as part of TCS4.
I have inserted an image in FrameMaker which has the file path Interactivities\First Interactivity\tab1.swf (shown in the screenshot).
When I import to RoboHelp the path is lost.
This is generally not an issue as the file gets imported and published as well.
But in my case, I have three different SWFs named, tab1.swf, tab2,swf, and tab3.swf in three folders First Interactivity, Second Interactivity, and Third Interactivity respectively. The content of all three SWF files are being called from an XML file, which has the same name of tabs.xml. Now, when we publish the RoboHelp file, since all the three SWFs get copied/published to the single folder, that throws all my calls to the XML out of gear.
So, is there a way I can retain the file path when the file is imported?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Sreekanth

Sorry, bad choice of words there from my side.
I have a Tab interactivity in SWF fomat. The framework of this is created in Flash in which we are calling the content from XML file. Here is the screenshot of the SWF when the XML file is missing:
Now, when I place the XML file in the required folder, it looks like this:
In your case, you place the Captivate file which is not dependent on other files. That is why you get it right. It is something like inserting an image.

  • RoboHelp V8 Are working files the output files?

I have RH V4 and there are 2 version of the file the html pages. The one I edit and then the files created for the output.   I have to save both versions to multiple places and I was wondering if they are now just one file/version.
Also, I am trying to convince my company on the benefits of spending $500 to upgrade, any compelling reasons?
I like that I it can have multiple projects. But that doesn't merit $500 in their book.

    Welcome to our community
I'm assuming you mean to say that you have RoboHelp X4. Version 4 is really REALLY old!
Think of your RoboHelp files as you might think of ingredients in the kitchen. You have eggs, flour, milk and whatnot. These are the source ingredients. They are very much like your RoboHelp source files. You mix these ingredients and bake them to create OUTPUT, such as Chocolate Chip cookies, Bran Muffins or whatever. The cookies and muffins are very much like your RoboHelp OUTPUT files.
All versions of RoboHelp I've ever seen are able to have multiple projects. Whether you think it's worth the upgrade price is for only you to decide. If you are happy with the way RoboHelp works and it suits you. Then hold off. But there are many factors to consider.
Does the new version offer something you might find useful and save lots of time? If so, upgrading is a no brainer.
Are you finding that the output you create has suddenly began to have issues? Might be time to upgrade. For example, if you are creating WebHelp output and suddenly you see lots of folks that are all using the new Google Chrome browser, the older version of WebHelp doesn't know about Chrome. So the WebHelp may have issues. In that case you might strongly consider upgrading so your output handles newer browsers.

  • Which RoboHelp 7 files need to be translated?

I have been transferred to a different division in my company and I am now responsible for the Online help that is created using Robohelp 7. I am completely new to Robohelp and what little I know I learned through a tutorial that I found. I have just been told that I need to provide RoboHelp files to be translated to French. I am pretty much lost. The application that has Help has two components (and therefore two types of Help): a desktop component that uses HTML Help and generates a ",chm" file and a web component that uses WebHelp that generates ".htm" files.
My problem is that I do not know which files in each type of Help that I need to have translated.
For the HTML Help I assume that I need to have the source files translated. But if I do this, do I need to recreate the entire project including recreating the topics, TOC, and index in French? What about map files?
For the WebHelp, do I just need to translate the ".htm" files along with the TOC and Index files?
I am using RoboHelp 7 on Windows XP
I would appreciate any help on this that anyone could provide. TIA

    4. what is best edition or version for me use.??
please please answer such question. i very confusing about all this question....
thanks in advance. it w'l takes ur valuable time but i hepls me lot..
    plz

Hi opsmca and welcome to the RH forums. So many questions so let's get to them
The file extension from a RH project depends on the type of output being produced. Threre are many different output types available depending on your needs. I outlined these in a recent blog post which you can read here.
The RoboHelp product is in fact two beasts. The first RoboHelp for Word uses Word as its editor creating RTF files which are then compiled. However this is little used these days. The other application is RoboHelp HTML which has its own in built WYSIWYG editor (it looks similar to Word) that creates the underlying HTML used to render the documentation topics. With this you can still have writers writing in Word or FrameMaker and then import this into RoboHelp. You can even dynamically link Word or FrameMaker files to your RoboHelp HTML project making the process of getting any updates very easy.
The answer to this question depends on the output type you are using (see question 1). Each output type has its own deliverable and as such requires a different method of integration. You may also want to consider how context sensitive help calls are handled. My advice though is not to fall into the trap of saying you need JavaHelp just because your app is Java.
RoboHelp 8 is the current version and is the only one you're likely to find in the shops. If you want to use simulations, FrameMaker in any shape or form you may want to consider buying the Adobe Technical Communication Suite. The latest version is 2.5 and includes RoboHelp, FrameMaker, Captivate, Acrobat Professional and assorted other applications and utilities.
Finally I'd really recommend that you at the very least download a RoboHelp trial. This is a fully working version that you can use for 28 days. It should give you a good idea of further questions to ask! There are also a number of useful RoboHelp resources you can tap into:

  • RoboHelp 9-Not All Files Generating for FlashHelp

I am generating a FlahHelp layout in RoboHelp 9. I have lines of business for Commercial Insurance in my documentation. One particular line of business (Professional) generates within RoboHelp when I generate the FlashHelp layout and displays correctly, but when I go into C:/RoboHelp FIles and locate the folder for the documentation and go into the !SSL! folder and then into the FlashHelp folder, Professional is not there.
It does display correctly for all other layouts I generate.
    This just recently started happening.
I have another guide with basically the same information in it and also generate a FlashHelp layout. Professional generates correctly on that guide and the files within the !SSL! folder display correctly.
    What would cause this problem?
    Thank you,

Check that you are looking at the right location. Open up your FlashHelp SSL properties and make sure that the path in the Output Folder and Start Page option is where you are looking. If this is not the problem, can you please post an image of what you are seeing to help us further.
