Globe Symbol with Startup

When I restart my computer, it makes the start up noise and goes to a blue screen with a little globe in a box that flashes on the screen and it wont go any further. I've gotten it to turn on by just turning the screen off and leaving it overnight, but I'm afraid it will do the same thing (or worse) the next time I restart. HELP!

Restart the computer with the X key held down; it should then start up normally. This can also be done by holding down the Option key at startup, clicking on your hard disk followed by the button with the straight arrow, and then changing the relevant setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Weird Symbol with Startup! Help!!

    Hello! I've got a 2005 iMac G5 (no iSight) and i'm running OSX 10.3.9.
For the past three days, when i try to start up my iMac, a weird symbol appears that resembles a gray square with a globe in the center of it. It will blink for about 10-15 seconds and then it will change to a blinking file with a question mark over it.
I've got a feeling this has something to do with my wireless network, but i'm not sure what? Is it possible that a setting that got changed on a PC in the network is causing this? Please let me know ASAP and thanks for your help!
    -Dave

You should press the X key as soon as you hear the startup chime; alternatively, you can hold down the Option key at the same time, select your hard disk in the list, and push the button with the straight arrow. In this case, you will need to reselect your hard disk as the startup disk from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Hello, mac mini will not boot. I get a file symbol with a question mark, then a white screen, Hello, mac mini will not boot. I get a file symbol with a question mark, then a white screen

Hello, My mac mini will not boot. When I turn it on, I get the chime, then the white screen, then the apple symbol, then a file symbol with a question mark, then the white screen and then it stays like that.
Is this a bad hard drive?

Sounds like it.  Try booting from your OSX restore DVDs - startup and hold down "C".  This will take AGES! Then run Disk Utility from the menu.
The flashing ? means your system is corrupt, dead, not there, on a dying HD, etc...

  • HD instead of Apple symbol on startup

    Hi -
I've recently noticed that every once in a while, when I start my macbook, instead of the normal apple logo, I get a hard drive symbol with an arrow pointing to it. The system won't boot completely until I click on the arrow.
It's as if the OS is asking me to select the HD as the start up disk. If I do it, everything boots fine, and it won't happen again for a few weeks.
I was just curious if anyone knew why this happens.
    Thanks.

Is the internal HD selected as the startup volume? If not, then go to sys prefs and choose startup disk, then choose the internal HD.

  • Weird symbol during startup

on a machine I support I get this symbol during startup right after the apple icon but before the login screen

the startup on this machine is also unusually long and this behavior started happening after a crash/reboot when the computer wouldn’t wake from sleep.
After the Mac starts it appear to function normally.
This is a g-4 mirror door with os 10.3.9 and 1 gig ram. It has a 120 gig drive with 80 gigs free.
I have run disk warrior, fixed directory issues (not many) run disk utility from a install disk, fixed permissions, reset the pram, nvram and reset the motherboard.
    No recent installs or updates.

    carl,
using verbose login showed that the problem was loading the ATA IO. at that point I sarted looking at what was on the ata bus.
turns out there was a small hard drive that everyone forgot about that had gone dead. once that was removed the startup was back to normal.
that also explained why once the bootup got past that drive the computer functioned normally.
the visual clue would have been noticing that the drive icon was missing but the user forgot it was there as it was an archive drive that she did not use. so when it went missing she didn't even notice it was gone. she did hear a "funny noise" in a quieter environment I probably would have heard the drive clicking LOL
anyway thanks for the help and hints!

  • Display Currency symbol with value in ALV Report

        IF <fs_fieldcat>-fieldname = 'STPRS'.
          <fs_fieldcat>-seltext_s = 'Std Cost '.
          <fs_fieldcat>-seltext_m = 'Std Cost'.
          <fs_fieldcat>-seltext_l = 'Std Cost '
           <fs_fieldcat>-tabname = 'MBEW'.
          <fs_fieldcat>-ctabname = 'T001'.
          <fs_fieldcat>-cfieldname ='WAERS'.

  • Battery symbol with red line thru it

how do you fix the blackberry with a battery symbol with a red line thru it?

    Try this first:
Leave the device to charge 2-3 hours, and then, still connected to the USB cable, remove the the battery from the device a few seconds and reinsert it. If it boots--leave it to charge to 100% (check Options > Status for the percentage).
If it doesn't boot--try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.
Make certain your USB cable is connected to one of the PC's main rear USB ports. Not a USB hub, nor a monitor USB port, nor a USB port on the front of the PC.
    Download Desktop Manager from here:

I recently bought a 8800 and when I inserted a battery, all I got was a battery symbol with a red line through it on a dim screen.  I changed batteries, tried to charge it via USB and from a wall outlet to no avail.  I tried cleaning the contacts and tried uploading t a new  OS, but it wont recognize the phone being connected when it actually is.    I am at the end of my rope with this phone and can't figure out what else to do.  Is it just gone? • Circle Symbol WIth Lock In It Near Battery Symbol - What is it?

My IPhone 4 stopped rotating the display horizontally when viewing web pages and I am also noticing a circle symbol with a little padlock in the circle located next to the battery indicator. I am assuming that this symbol is indicating that a lock of some sort is on.
How do I get my I4 to again rotate for viewing web pages and does this circular symbol have something to do with the issue?
    Many thanks in advance!

Allan does know iPhones well but you can too.  See p. 17-18 of the manual... http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_iOS4_User_Guide.pdf

  • I have just downloaded iOS update but this has locked my iPad screen. Screen shows iTunes symbol with white arrow and padlock below it. I have tried to reboot but I am unable to unlock screen. Can anyone help with this please.

I have downloaded an iOS update on my iPad air2 but it has locked the screen and I can only see the iTunes symbol with a white arrow and a padlock below it. I have tried turning the iPad off and on but the same screen reappears. Has anyone had a similar problem?

What that symbol indicates is that your iPad has gone into recovery mode and now it needs to be restored in order for you to be able to use it again. You can reboot from now until the cows come home and it will not do any good.
You do indeed need to plug your iPad into your computer and use iTunes to restore the device.
