Globe?

A minute ago my comp just didnt do anything. i rebooted and when you normally see the apple logo at start up with the gray screen. i saw a globe flashing on the gray screen.... can anyone tell me what is was or if anyone else had this happen to them also.

The computer is looking for the startup disk.
Go to system preferences, click on the Startup Disk, then select your hard drive.
See if that helps.

  • Is anyone seeing the flashing globe on startup in Mavericks?

When I startup my MBA running Mavericks 10.9.2, I was geting a flashing globe and long delay before being presented with the Apple logo and, ultimatley, the login screen.
For what it's worth, now that Activity Monitor no longer shows a disk usage pie chart, I brought up Disk Utility and, to my amazement, saw, in addition to the legit Macintosh HD boot drive, an AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller .dmg file shown as a selectable startup disk!  That disk image file was in downloads; I deleted it from that folder and emptied the trash. I rebooted. No flashing globe - problem solved. I post this becasue all of the discussion threads I could find on this issue were pre-Mavericks, in the 2007 - early 2013 time frame. Well, the issue exists and this is a way to solve it.
What did SJ say about about Flash? A "bag of hurt"? I agree.
Hope one or more of you find this useful.
    Pioneer.

I had another version of this problem, ultimately traced to a faulty USB device (my Apple keyboard). After repairing permissions, running Disk Utility, and reinstalling Mavericks, the flashing globe persisted. However, after the reinstall I also got error messages about multiple kernel extension problems. Apple Support suggested USB triage—removing all USB devices and plugging them back in one at a time and restarting. With everything unplugged, startup was normal. The keyboard showed up immediately as the problem. Plugged in a spare keyboard and the flashing globe appeared no more.

  • Internet recovery gets stuck on the spinning globe with the progress bar below.

    Hello Everybody!
I'm trying to fix the iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) of my friend. He said it doesn't boot anymore and just gets stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel below. So my first step was to go into the Startup Manager by pressing the Option key after the chime. There I was presented with the Macintosh HD and the Recovery HD. After selecting the Recovery HD to access the Disk Utilities I got stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel again. So I guess the data on the drive is corrupted and might have to be replaced. But before I do that, I wanted to give the Internet Recovery a try. I connected the iMac to the internet using an ethernet cable and pressed Command + Option + R after the chime and the spinning globe appeared with the info: "starting recovery process from network. This may take a while". After a short time the sentences are replaced by a progress bar and a timer that is counting up. The progress bar then moved for a tiny little bit and then nothing happens anymore but the timer keeps counting up. I waited for quiet some time before I gave up. I did not get any errors so I can't provide any other useful information. Can anyone give my some advice? I read in other posts that the ISPs of specific countries block ports which are needed for the internet recovery. I'm in Thailand right now. Does anyone know if that might cause the problem?
Thank you for all your help!

Neither we nor Apple support jailbroken iDevices.

  • What do the globe and triangle with exclamation point mean on the URL bar and why do they sometimes change while surfing a page?

I have always about this, as I've seen these more than once along multiple versions of Firefox. I'm well aware that the lock means the site is 'verified' though I don't know exactly what that entails. More recently, I've noticed that many websites either have the lock or else the globe with the markings on it which says that the connection to the site in question is 'unencrypted', but I don't know what that means. Sometimes this will change between pages on the same website. What I find stranger is that sometimes a a single page on one site will go from the lock to the triangle with the exclamation point in it. Now from what I can tell, it means something similar to the globe, as they seem to both state the same basic thing, that the website doesn't supply identity information and the connection isn't encrypted. What I want to know is how and why this happens, and sometimes even while still on the same page. I've encountered this on three different versions of firefox. The 24 esr, 28.0, and version 34. (Not all on one computer, mind. Though I believe it's possible to have multiple instances of Firefox on the same machine as I know someone mentioned being able to do that on another thread and I'd love to know how that's done if anyone can answer it.) These versions of firefox were on 8.1, and two distinct versions of XP from two different machines. Is this an odd glitch, or is something else going on there and if so, how does one fix it? So far it's happened to me twice on my own computer, once on a fiction website, and as of tonight, once on youtube. On the former, the switch happened on a single page, while on Youtube it changed from one page on the search bar to the actual channel of something in question and back again. Closing out the tab and doing a quick clearing of history seemed to work fine on youtube. The fiction website, not so much, though I haven't seen the triangle thing come back again, as everything there seems to be the globe. So far anyway. However it has come up before on various computers in the past that I've used with various firefox versions, as I've said. Can anyone explain what this is and how to fix it if it is indeed a problem?

    <blockquote>
The green padlock means your connection is HTTPS (encrypted) and the certificate identifies a particular site operator. Certificate issuers demand special verification for the Extended Validation (EVSSL) certificate that generates a green padlock.
The gray padlock means your connection is HTTPS (encrypted) but the certificate cannot establish the operator of the site one way or another. No special identification is required to get this certificate.
The exclamation point triangle symbols may indicate that the connection is partially encrypted -- some content is the page was sent over an open connection -- or recently it may indicate that the site uses such easily cracked encryption that you should treat it as providing no protection.
And the point of all this is?! Simply this: if your web traffic is ''not encrypted'', it can be read by others. That's why login pages and sites dealing in your personal or sensitive information should always show a padlock in the address bar. If it's not there, be concerned.
If a normally secure site suddenly shows a mixed content icon, try reloading the page (Ctrl+r or to re-request fresh copies of cached files use Ctrl+Shift+r).
    </blockquote>
As it happens, I have tried the refresh thing. It doesn't always work on sites where this sudden changeover occurs. The weird thing is that, again, this happens at random and I've seen it occur over multiple versions of firefox, past and present, so it's not just relegated to just the three main ones I have most recently seen it on.
Now what makes this even stranger is that I have seen a few pages on the fiction website (www.fimfiction.net to be specific) where the grey padlock at the very least shows up on a page, but then suddenly will go to the triangle. Not all of these pages have mixed content or even any content at all beyond simple text. A few have pictures or clickable links, but I usually avoid clicking on the links if I don't know and trust the website. More recently though, the near-entirety of the site has gone to the globe, when before it was the grey padlock. I think the one thing that remains padlocked is its login section. Is it just that the website needs to update its certificates? If so, I can probably just send the site runner a message about that.
I dunno what to do with youtube when it shows up though other than just closing out the tab it's on, clearing my browser history, and reopening the site. It happens rarely with youtube, but it's not unheard of, and it follows along every page on the site once it pops up in one page at all until I shut down that tab. And this is a multiple version thing. These are the two sites where I encounter the issue the most as it's one of only a handful of websites I go to aside from an image gallery which is typically very good about safety. Or as much as it can be, at any rate. The only other site I frequent, www.fanfiction.net (probably the oldest fiction website still active today, and not to be confused with fimfiction) has the grey padlock at all times, aside from when I log into the site. I've used the https: prefix most times when going to a site the first time, and firefox has typically then used that prefix anytime I just enter the general website address in the URL bar, but sometimes it doesn't. Is that partially responsible for why I have seen the padlock switch to the triangle sometimes? I know the link that cor-el posted says that by default from version 16 up, mixed content is blocked by default and I don't think I've ever touched that in the options section of the tools, so what exactly do I do here? Just ignore it, or just keep hitting refresh or what? It doesn't happen all the time, after all, but it does still get annoying.

  • Permanent flashing globe at start up

Hello, I hope someone can help me on this. First off, sorry I do not have model information, I cannot get on my imac to confirm it. I purchased it (24" widescreen model, silver casing) in 2008. Here is the problem.
I went on a 3 day vacation to vegas, I left my computer on as usual. When I arrived home, it was frozen on one of the screen saver pictures. I had to power off the computer manually. When I restarted, I held the option key and instead of getting a couple disk icons to select between my OS X and Windows XP, I got a blank grey screen. I tried again, same thing. I tried without holding option, and got a black screen and message stating there was no bootable disk (this would be on the windows side of things). Restarted again, held option, got the grey screen and decided to wait. About 10 minutes later a flashing globe appeared. I researched this and understand that the computer is trying to boot from a non-existent network disk. I am not sure how this preference was changed. The solution is to change the preference. The problem is in all the solutions I encoutnered, the flashing globe eventually goes away, followed by a question mark and then finally start up. Mine remained as a flashing globe for 10 hours overnight, so I am at a loss on how to correct it.
Any explanations or links to explanations for my specific situation would be greatly appreciated. Also, if the explanation does not involved wiping the computer that would be great as I have many family memories on the computer I would be very happy to get back. Thank again for your time.

Couple of suggestions you can try.
    1.
    a) Hold down 'Command' + 'S' before Apple startup sound.
    b) At the command line, type "/sbin/fsck -fy" (without quotes) to repair the disk.
    2.
    a) Hold down 'Shift' before Apple startup sound. This boots your machine in 'Safe Mode'.
    b) Log-in and reboot.
Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

As far as I know, you cannot put a SWF file in an email and
have it successfully show across all email client. Try exporting
your banner to an animated GIF. If that doesn't produce a good
enough image then export it as a bitmap sequence and convert those
files to an animated GIF in ImageReady or something like that.
Apparently Flash's export to animated GIF is not that great.
Here's a good article on HTML emails you can read. You'll
need to make sure your GIF is posted somewhere that the HTML email
can refer to. It explains it in the article.

  • How to get rid of the SAP BPC "three globes" startup screen?

    Hi,
I am trying to figure out how to get rid of the SAP BPC "three globes" startup screen when we start BPC. I do not want it to pop up.
I looked at VBA behind the workbooks but could not find anything. Could not make the sheet invisible.
Is there a way to get rid of the screen? This is the screenshot

    Thanks!

Just found the answer on this very forum!
Re: How to change the logo, (3 Globes) on the launch page
Posted: Mar 18, 2009 12:46 PM in response to: David Fletcher Reply
OK then, now v7sp03 for microsoft has hit the shelves, you can change the logo !!!
    It is quite easy.
Have the logo file ready in either BMP, GIF or JPG format.
Put it in your "Server Install -> DataWebFolders[Appset]" folder (so where you keep your files).
In ApplicationSet parameters, add the parameter COMPANY_LOGO and in the options type the name of the file you just put on the server.
Now if you restart BPC for Excel, the second excel page that pops up should be showing your new logo or graphic (mine did).
The use of the logo has been documented in the admin manual -> working with appset parameters
    Some tips.
I wanted not to clutter the filesystem so i put my logo in the appsetpublications folder and added the path accordingly in the parameter (so now it reads appsetpublicationslogoname.jpg instead of just logoname.jpg).
If you do not supply a name (only the parameter), your second Excel window (normally holding the graphic) will not appear. That could be an alternative too if you find that whole thing annoying.
Hope this helps you build great BPC apps,
    Edwin van Geel

  • Netboot will not working, getting globe, then flashing folder with question mark.

I just created a netboot image which went off without any problems.  I copied the two .nbi folders to my NetBootSP0 folder, and enabled them within netboot.  My OS X server which is my netboot server and dhcp server.  When I boot using N or Option N, I get the flashing globe for several seconds, the request goes through to the server and gets ACK {SELECT} however a few more seconds after, I get the flashing folder and question mark before it does a normal boot.  I have read the other posts about DHCP and Subnets.  My server and and clients are all 255.255.0.0.  Any suggestions would be very helpful as I need this to work for several buildings.

    This might work for some:
I had the same problem of the netboot image not mounting/opening, spinning globe then booting back to the Mac HD on the client and it was only when I remembered that we had manually experimented with jumbo frame rates and the MTU settings for our 32TB RAID in the Hardware settings for Ethernet ports on our servers. I turned the settings back to "Automatic" and 1000baseT on, then the whole NetInstall and Neboot was working perfectly again.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

  • Where has my airport utility window gone ? when I double click on the icon all I get is an image of a globe and a base station with no options to make changes in my airport extreme.

Where has my airport utility window gone? When I double click on the airport utility icon all I get is a picture of a globe and a base station with no further  options available to modify my airport extreme.

Sorry, you lost me on that last post.
    Let's start over again.
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac
Are you asked for a password at this point?  If yes, enter the base station or device password that you used when you originally set up the AirPort router. Depending when you did this originally, you might have been given an option to use the same password as the wireless network. If you were not, then you have a separate password for the base station.
You need that password to be able to access the settings for the AirPort router in AirPort Utility.
If you see a window listing basic information, click Edit in the upper right corner of the window.
If you are asked for a password, you must enter the device password or base station password that you established when you first set up the AirPort router as explained above.
If you forgot the password, a Soft Reset will allow you to go in and reset the base station password.  Might be a good idea to write down that password.
If you are still stuck, then the only option that you have at this point is to perform a Hard Reset to return the settings to factory defaults and then set up the AirPort router again.
If you prefer, you can also do a Factory Default Reset. It's the same as a Hard Reset except for the timing of holding in the reset button.

  • My Computer won't load from Globe and Folder

Another issue has yet arose. When I started my computer this morning I got a Blue Globe and a gray background and then the globe will change to a Mac folder and then to a question mark. I tried taking the hard drive out and checking it and repairing it and it tells me its fine and doesn't need fixed, which I figured because the thing was just working. I tried Command combinations on the keyboard and it won't move it! it won't even boot from the disc! Please Help!

The blue globe indicates the startup disk (volume) selection in PRAM somehow got set to Network.
    Possible solutions -
    • Reset PRAM. Restart or boot, immediately upon hearing the startup chimes press and hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys until you've heard two additional sets of startup chimes. Then let startup continue.
    • Force OSX. Restart or boot, immediately upon hearing the startup chimes press and hold down the X key, keep it held down until the machine starts to boot to OS X.
    • Try using Startup Manager. Restart or boot, immediately upon hearing the startup chimes press and hold down the Option key. This should bring up a blue screen with some icons in it. Select (use the arrow keys) the one representing your OS X on the hard drive, press Return.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
Once you get it up and running, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select your internal hard drive as the boot volume.

Somehow the HDD is screwed up. Data saving issue is not directly Toshiba related issue and before you spend time here discussing about such things I recommend you to ask someone with good PC knowledge what can be done about data saving.
When the HDD is in the notebook again start notebook as first step set BIOS to default settings.
After doing this install recovery image. After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS and everything should work properly again.
I hope you will be able to do this using HDD recovery option.
How to do this you can find on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
Have you maybe created recovery discs?

That does not work on model year older then 2010 and really doesn't work on any older then late 2011 models.
You will need a set of original system dvd disc thjat are always sypplied with every mac sold before Lion came out. Systems older then late release early 2011 models.
If you don't have them you kcan order a replacement set from apple by calling them. Have the serial number of you mac handy.

  • Lion internet recovery only shows a spinning globe

I had boot camp on OS X Lion, with Windows 7 installed. I decided that I wanted to install a third OS (Linux) so I used the partioning tool in Windows. I made sure that i partitioned the windows hard drive, so it wouldnt effect my mac side. when I re started the macbook, i had no option to boot in the mac side, the icon was gone, even the recovery was gone, so i booted into windows, only to have it give me a blue screen (which dissapeared too fast for me to read) and the the computer re started, and kept doing it over and over. so i popped in my windows 7 disk, and re installed it on the windows partition of the hard drive and when it was installed i installed my boot camp drivers (I had them on a disk) and it asked me to re boot, so i did, only to have it give a blue screen again. so i installed windows yet again, and extracted the drivers from the disk, and only installed them, but i did not install boot camp. so now i am running windows on my computer, without boot camp, and no mac side. now, part 2 of my problem. when i try to use Lion Internet Recovery, it gets to the spinning globe, but does not give me a progress bar. it just shows a spinning globe for hours, and nothing else, until i get tired and just boot into the windows side and deal with windows. when i go into "Computer" in my windows side, it shows the partition of my hard drive (320 GB) which should be my mac side, but it says that there are no files on it, and the full 320 GB is just free space. what can i do to get my mac side back?
