Gmail account in mail.app

Mail will not allow me to set up gmail as a POP account. It forces an imap account. The problem is that imap insists on downloading all gmail folders from the online account including the content of the spam folder. gmail has an excellent spam filter but the imap account insists on downloading this garbage to my iMac. I don't want to see the spam, that's why it is fltered. Is there some way to force mail to set up a POP account and/or some way to keep the spam from downloading to my local iMac?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Don

IMAP is really the best way to use GMail, but I agree that having to see the Spam and All Mail mailboxes in Mail is annoying.  See my recent blog post, Hiding GMail’s “All Mail” from Apple Mail, for info on hiding those so you won't have to see them.

multiple gmail accounts in mail.app via IMAP - how to delete messages so that they are not stored on gmail and not in All Mail therefore either.
i know that dragging messages to the GMail.Trash folder deletes it in Gmail, but doing that for multiple accounts is a hassle!
anybody else struggle with this, solved it?

i have still not figured out a solution to this. very painful - the fact that messages iwill not be using ever again and with large attachments, just sit there in all mails and slow down mail.app for me, fill up search results with stuff i don't want to see and fill up space on the HDD. the attachments as a result often are stored 3-4 times on the HDD!
some geek here must have solved it - come on!

  • Unable to re-add gmail account to Mail app

I'm trying to re-setup a Google email account that I deleted from my Macbook Pro (Yosemite). I get the following message when trying to set it up in Internet Accounts:
There was a problem setting up the Mail account.
Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server "mydomain.com".
If I click OK, my contacts, Calendar, and Messages accounts are all configured. Only the Mail account isn't checked (or setup in Mail). When I try to check the box, it immediately unchecks with no error given.
I noted the following log entries in the system log, not sure if they are related:

I've tried setting the account up manually ("Add Other Account...") but that also failed. I've tried repairing within Disk Utilities. I've restart multiple times.
I've verified that IMAP is enabled for this account. I am able to set this account up in the third party app Postbox (another email client for mac) with no issues.
There must be something wrong with my local configuration and I'm out of ideas. Help?

precisely the same issue on 2 computers on 10.9 and 10.10
    - the accounts are google apps for business accounts
    - imap is on
    - 2 step verification is off
    - upgrading the 10.9 machines resulted in the same issue/error
    - running onyx and cleaning out everything did nothing
    - trashing mail prefs nothing
    - creating new user account on the macs...same issue
    - i can setup the accounts on my own 10.10 machine (ios also works for those 2 accounts)
completely dead in the water....my next step to try is to clean install the 2 effected machine....

  • Gmail account and mail.app

    Hi,
I have strange situation on my iphone. Mail received messages until last friday 19:38. Everything after that can not be viewed.
I have tried, removing account, and adding it again. - Nothing.
I have updated iphone to 4.3.3. - still the same
I have added another gmail account, and it work just fine.
If gmail work on my imac, why not on iphone 4? Why until that date, and for just that account?
I wrote also to google 10 minutes ago and waiting for someone to reply.
    Thank's for help!

to those who may have this same problem, there are two different solutions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=546338
one is to make some changes to the gmail POP account settings on the iphone and computer, and the other is to set up gmail as POP on the iphone and IMAP on the computer. hope this is helpful for you!

  • Send from Gmail alias in Mail.app in iOS 7?

I have a Gmail account with several email accounts that forward into it. I've configured Gmail on the web so that I can send email from those accounts.
I just set up this Gmail account in Mail.app in iOS7 on my iPad.
In Gmail on the web, if I receive an email to one of the accounts that forwards into this Gmail account, and click "reply", it will automatically send use that account as the "from" address (rather than the Gmail account).
Is there any way to specify this as a preference in Mail.app on the iPad? Otherwise I have to remember to manually change the "from" address when I reply to an email sent to any of the accounts that forward to my Gmail account.

I've not heard of or experience any such issue.
Have you tried removing and readding the accounts in question?

  • Gmail account on Mail

    Hi,
I have an POP Gmail account in Mail.app (2.1.3), that suddenly stopped downloading the e-mails. No settings changed (nor in Mail, nor in Gmail), and e-mail sending works fine. Other accounts (including other Gmail accounts) present no problems.
How can I solve this? I don't want to change for IMAP, nor do I want to have to dowload the over 2Gigs of e-mails again, having to mark hundreds of mails with flags or read/not read signs…
    Thanks!

    I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself correctly...
I have over 50 new messages on the account that I can only see via HTML. On Mail Account Info I can see all the messages that have already been downloaded, plus one that appears as received today, but that isn't nor on mail nor in HTML (with unknown sender)
Could it be that this message has an invalid date or is otherwise malformed and
that’s why webmail doesn’t display it where you’d expect it to be? Have you
tried searching for it using words that appear in the subject?
It may be, but now I ran the Account info, and the message that appeared before with unknown sender and wasn't in either HTML nor Mail, being the last message displayed the last one downloaded (and missing the other new over-50 messages).
I've tried deleting the last one downloaded from the server (using Account Info), and it unlocked the other "pending" messages! Problem seems solved!! =)
Sometimes Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from
downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem may require removing the
problematic message from the server, but I don’t think you’ll be able to do
that if you cannot even see the message via webmail. If this was a normal POP
account, you’d probably be able to remove the message from the server using
Mail’s Account Info window, but Gmail ignores any requests to remove messages
from the server made by a POP client...
I guess you were right! But indeed I was able to use Account Info to delete the message!
Sure you don’t see there all the messages on the server that have already been
downloaded, do you? What’s the date of the messages that do show up in Mail’s
    Account Info window?
I could actually see all the messages that had been downloaded! Dates from 2004 until the last received message (from about a week ago).
Also, first you say “On Account Info, there is only one message sent today that
isn't downloaded”, and now you say “All the messages displayed appear as
already downloaded”. These statements cannot both be true, can they?
It was true, because the above mentioned "unknown sender" message appeared as downloaded, but it didn't exist anywhere..! And now it's completely gone, including from "Account Info".
Anyway, the key was in that choke in the last message! The tip was right, thank you for the help, and congratulations for the accuracy! =)
Hope I can help you the next time! Greetings!

  • Mutliple gmail imap accounts in Mail.app

I'm trying to set up my fiancée's gmail account in Mail as an imap where I have my own three email accounts set up (one of which is my gmail imap).
Mail won't have it, though all settings are in order per Mail's/Gmail's directions.
Is mail unable to have two different accounts that use the same imap/smtp servers?

I realise this doesn't answer your question as such, but have you considered setting up a separate user account for her (via System Preferences > Accounts) - that way at least neither of you will be able to accidentally delete each others email or send things from the wrong account etc.

  • Unable to create new email from Gmail account in Mail

I just installed gmail to retrieve messages within Mail: I can receive gmail messages and reply to gmail from Mail. However, I cannot create and send a new message in Mail using my gmail account; when I do I get the following error message:
    Enter Password for Account
    smtp.gmail.com:xxxx[account name]
The SMTP server "smtp.gmail.com" rejected the password for user "xxx[account name]"
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
No matter how many times I add it correctly and click OK, the same message returns.

That is what I used to set up my gmail account in Apples Mail App before your post. Those instructions say that when you click on the Advanced Tab that the port will switch to 995 - which it did for me. I do have a minor problem though. Is there any way to prevent emails sent from Mail via gmail from showing up in gmails web page? I don't really like web mail whatsoever!

  • Can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

Hello, can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back.

  • Configuring mail account in Mail App with restriction account on

    Hi there,
How is possible to create an account in Mail App with the restriction Accounts enable?
I explain myself. I configure all the iPads of my business with the restrictions enabled and select "Don´t Allow Changes" on the Accounts tab.
    Settings > General > Restrictions> ( Enter Passcode ) >Enable Restrictions> Accounts > Don´t Allow Changes
It suppouses to prevent any change or create an account on Mail App, but I´ve found a couple of iPads with a Yahoo and GMail account configured in the Mail App while the restrictions still enabled.
Of course, users doesn´t know the Passcode and any of the general setting where modified.
Is there any other way ( via web perhaps, no high tech at all ) to configure an account in a restricted iPad?
    I´m using iPad 2 ( iOS 5.0.1 )
I can´t figure out how, and it´s driving me crazy.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks gyrhead for the answer.
I do have Installing and Deleting Apps turned on so users can´t install or delete anything.
Guessing a four digits passcode in 10 attemps is very dificult, I discard that option.
There is somehow to add a Yahoo o Gmail account with account Restictions Enable.
Safari has no restriction indeed, except "private brownsing", so it might come from that way, but I can´t figured out how you might configure a Gmail o Yahoo account straight to the Mail App using just Safari...

  • Help With Hooking Up A Google Apps Mail Account With Mail.app v 4.4?

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this, basically I'm at university, and my university E-mail account is set up through google apps. It looks like this "[email protected]", and I'd like to be able to access this account through Mail.app, but I'm struggling to get the two to play nice, does anyone know what incoming and outcoming settings I need to use to get it to work, or if there's any settings I need to alter in Gmail itself first?
Thanks a lot in advance for any help anyone can give me.
    Sam

Sorry, sorted it, just had to fill it all out like a normal IMAP Gmail account but fill out my entire email address anytime it asked for a username.

  • Can't setup Hotmail Pop account in mail app

    New macbook
    All updates
Gmail works in mail app fine
    hotmail account created 2007
    Problem; i can't add a hotmail account.
It says it can't verify the user/pass. I have tried to delete and re-add but it doesn't work.
Could any genius troubleshoot this one?
I literally, add a new account
    user is the email
pass is the password for the webmail version
    setup for pop
    won't go past this screen

I'm having the same problem. I bought my first mac and the Apple Mail successfully set up my gmail account and I was able to manually set up a separate IMAP account in Apple Mail. But when Apple Mail set up my hotmail account, it told me that the user/password aren't verified and won't work. Sure enough, the hotmail account always shows as offline, and when I try to take all accounts online, I am prompted for my hotmail password, which is then rejected. I am able to access my hotmail account via Safari using the same user/password, so I know the user name and password are correct. And I checked the POP server, port and ssl settings in the non-working hotmail account that Apple Mail set up, and they are the same ones recommended by hotmail. I tried your suggestion of setting up a new user on my mac and trying to set up the hotmail account in that new user's Mail account, and I had the exact same problem. Help!

  • Just set up my new ipad Air and cannot set up my gmail account into mail ?

Just set up my new ipad Air and cannot set up my gmail account into mail ?

    EASY SIMPLE FIX....
    The problem is Google.
I had the same problem, couldn't install Gmail on my ipad or iphone and kept saying wrong / incorrect password, error messages. Worked for hours and hours on this.
It is Google's (optional) 2-step verification system that is to blame.
Google won't tell you this, and instead, they have come up with work arounds, and even telling people to install the Gmail iPhone/ipad app, which then limites the iphone/pad functionality when not using iphone's native mail.
    FIX:
    Logon to Google...
Go into your Google account preferenes
DELETE your cell number used for 2-step verification...... leave it blank
(it is optional, Google does not require you use 2-step verification)
    Thats it. Your'e done.
Now set up your Gmail (now called Google) as usual on your Apple device.
You don't need 2-step (optional) verification.
There are other secure ways to do this. It is an option, but Google goes out of it's way not to tell you this.
(and a great way for Google to gleen your personal information, in the name of security)
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Mavericks Gmail account - new mail showing up in Archive but not in Inbox

For a Gmail account, new mail seems to be showing up in the "Archive" folder for that account (which seems to be mapped to Gmail's "All Mail").
However it isn't showing up in the Inbox for the account.
The settings seem identical to another Gmail account where mail is showing up in the Inbox.
Any thoughts of what I might do to get these mails to show up in the Inbox?
    Thanks,
    Doug

I don't know. I've given up for now and am using Mailplane. I will be doing a write-up on it, but it seems to be working much better than Airmail even.
The funny thing about using Mailplane, which is a lot more directly connected to Gmail than any of the other clients, is that for the first time I'm seeing that even the iOS Mail app, which I thought had no problems, is actually lagging quite a lot behind the actual Gmail contents!
I think Mail.app is hopeless at this point. Maybe it's good if you want to transfer an an entire IMAP set of folders between accounts if you are migrating (as is Thunderbird). But basically it's become extremely unreliable under Mavericks. I can't believe Apple let it out of the door.
