Gmail and wifi on iPhone

I've just got my iPhone and configured it to fetch emails from my gmail account. This all works just fine with 3G but as I soon as I try and receive or send emails via my wifi network my iphone just reports 'unable to connect to smtp.gmail.com'
Any ideas most welcome.

One thing that might help out.
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, calendars > gmail account > SMTP > Primary Server.
Check what server port the outgoing mail is set to.
Then, check with your ISP to see if that particular port is being blocked.

Tell your wife to get her own Apple ID. If you do not want continuity/handoff to work with calls, on both devicesgo to Settings==>>FaceTime==>> Turn OFF iPhone cellular calls.

SUPER SIMPLE DUMB Question about hard-wired desktop mac and wifi for iPhone

Sorry if this has been already answered a million times. I have a desktop mac with a cable modem ethernet internet connection. I want to leave this hard-wired and setup a wifi network for a laptop or iPhone. What's the cheapest easiest way to do this?? I've never done anything wireless before.

Could I just somehow split the feed from the the cable modem or ethernet cable and route part of it into an AirPort express??
Unfortunately, no. This would create "confusion" for the modem as it is only expecting a single device to be connected to it. To be able to support both wired & wireless clients, you would need an Internet router with a built-in Ethernet switch, like the AirPort Extreme Base Station. If cost is an issue, you do NOT have to use an Apple router. There are a number of other vendors, like Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, & Netgear, to name a few, that offer similar models.

Syncing my iPhone, iPad, and Wife's iPhone

My wife and I are Apple converts. We now 2 iPhone's, an iPad and a MacBook Pro. My wife and I have different tastes in music as well as applications. We want to keep the music and apps we download seperate from the apps and music the other downloads. Also we want to keep the applications downloaded to our iphones off the iPad. How can we accomplish this?

Contacts shows my name as "me" on both my iphone and wife's iphone can they be different?

Using one contact db for all iOS devices two ipad and 2 iphones all devices show my name as "me". I would like to show wife's name as "me" on her ipad and iphone.

On your wife's phone go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>My Info (in the Contacts section), then choose her contact.

Sync and Wifi problem (iphone 3G 3.0)

So I've been updated to 3.0 since launch day, and I've been having these problems.
First, when I plug my phone into my pc to sync, sometimes (more often than not) just disconnects and reconnects in a loop, and will do so until I unplug it. I've tried every port in my pc, and it still does it. I switched it to my laptop, and no problems. I've reinstalled itunes and the mobile device drivers, and can't think of what else I can do to fix it.
The other problem is that my phone won't stay on wifi when it is connected. It will continually switch on and off, and my browser and apps will tell me that I don't have a connection to the internet, even if I have 3g service while the wifi is disabled. Just started doing that with 3.0. I've reset my phone, powered on and off, and factory restored it twice. Not sure what else I can do, thanks!

As far as I can see, the gmail contacts list will sync automatically when you access your gmail account. As for getting it on the phone from a Mac, being a PC user, I can't help you there.

Gmail and Mac Mail on Mac Book Pro OS Lion

I have a Gmail account
I have set this up on my Mac Book Pro in Mail
E-mails come in to Mail, I then archive the ones I want to save and then I attempt to delete them from the inbox and the sent box
The inbox then refills all the emails from Gmail
When I look online at my gmail account, it shows all the same e-mails but with "IMAP Deleted" next to it
How can I set it up, so that if I delete the emails on the Mac, they are deleted online and do not continue to refresh and repopulate?

My question too! I don't see the need to archive messages I want to delete. If want to archive, I should be able to archive them to a folder, which mail apparently does not do like Gmail. I much prefer archiving them to specific folders/labels instead of All Mail. I've never even liked All Mail so I keep it hidden so I can forget it is there.
If I want to delete, it is because I want them Gone, to the trash to disappear for good.
And, I want what I do in mail or on my iPhone to be reflected in my Gmail account and visa-versa. But how?
I only use Mail because I want my gmail emails backed up somewhere in case my account disappears or I am permanently locked out suddenly, like has happened to some people. If I can't get it to work smoothly, after the countless hours I've already spent playing with it trying to figure it out, I will end up just dumping Mail I'm afraid. I'd like to keep using it though because there are some things I do like about it.

all of a sudden today my iphone has stopped picking up Wifi and will not run Bluetooth. Having just upgraded to iOS 6.0 the Wifi switch is greyed out and bluetooth just experiences the rotating sunflower. Any ideas?

Try This:
Open up the imessage app on your Imac. Once you have it opened go to top left corner of your screen next to the apple picture and the word MESSAGES appears. Click on it then click on preferences and uncheck your husbands phone and number and or any other numbers which are checked. I had same problem this fixed it. Also if you wanted to you can open up your own Apple account, but that's not really necessary. My wife and I both share the same as you do

You don't have to wipe anything, but when you get a chance make sure you backed up to icloud.
What that means is your contacts inside of the phone either physically or liquid damaged. To check
which, you can look inside and if you see a little pink, that would give you a water damage. If you don't
see pink it means that you to many times plugged in that charger the other way or tried to. May be
used some other things to plug in. If you flash the light in you may be able to see those contacts.

Using Remote app on iPhone 5 without a separate internet connection and wifi router.

I need to be able to control iTunes within my MacBook Pro remotely. Using my mobile broadband service and wireless router I've been able to get the Remote app to allow my iPhone 5 to do the job nicely through Home Share. So I went and bought a separate WiFi router and tried to do the same thing. Of course when it didn't work, I discovered that I need an internet connection and WiFi network to make the Home Sharing work.
So I got to thinking, can I create a WiFi hotspot using the Personal HotSpot functionality of my iPhone, set up Home Sharing on phone and MacBookPro and then use the Remote app. Ideally this would work as it seems all the key components are in place.
The MacBook Pro accepts the iPhone hotspot as a means of Home Sharing, however the iPhone won't use the personal hotspot to Home Share and I can't connect to the iPhone personal hotspot on the iPhone itself.
Does anyone know how to make this work for me? It would be such as neat solution if I can get it to work - not to mention the potential to save me about $200 (I need to set this model up for two people).

Same trouble here, iPad 2 with latest OS and remote app, iPod with latest OS and app.

Face time fades out and then tries to reconnect on new ipad retina display on WiFi. Iphone 4s has no problem with face time from exact same location and same contact. WiFi signal strong on both devices. What gives?

Not necessarily, if you are using Facetime all the data goes through your WiFi router, your cable/DSL modem, your ISP and the internet to Apple's Facetime servers and then, in reverse, down to the Facetime recipient. Most WiFi routers can handle this unless others in the house are also using WiFi at the same time. The problem may be your ISP connection or congestion on the internet, etc.
