Gmail categories issue in Mail.app

Hi,
I notice a problem with Gmail in Mavericks 10.9.1. Mail does not seem to be compatible with the new Inbox categories (Promotions, updates, social, ...).  If I remove such a mail from my inbox with iOS 7, the mail stays in my inbox in Mavericks.
When checking on the Gmail website, it seems the affected mail has one of the new categories assigned to it. So, Mavericks assumes it is still in the inbox.
I have tried disabling the feature in Gmail, but mails still keeping on being assigned these labels.
Come to think of it: maybe it's rather an iOS issue, as the mail is not properly archived.
Anybody an idea on workarounds or how to disable this Gmail feature?

*I figured it out!*
Simple fix, here is what you do - open Mail v4.2 > Preferences
Select your Gmail account with this weird problem (I say select, cause in my situation I have multiple Gmail account setup but was having trouble with 1).
Then goto > Advanced tab
and then just type "/" (forward slash) - and then wait for a minute, it should fix it and allow to receive all the ghosts messages again - which apparently were visible under my online (web based) gmail.com's account also on my iPhone. You might see double messages, don't freak out like I did - Quit Mail v4.2 and restart that should go away as well, like in my case. Strange? Definitely
Anyways, hope this helps!

  • Another SMTP issue w/ mail.app from a newbie (works on iPhone & other Mac)

I've recently switch from PC to a new iMac 27" QC i5 with 10.6.2 and Mail 4.2. Thursday, March 18th to be exact. I set up my mail.app that night and everything was peachy until Tuesday, March 23rd. I can receive just fine. Just can't send. The SMTP server is listed as Offline.
On the other hand, I can successfully send and receive mail with the exact pop/smtp settings on my iPhone 3G and my PC. Gmail works fine on mail.app too. I've called my webhost 3xs and Apple 3xs. My ISP is not blocking the ports. I've used about every variable possible and tried using Thunderbird as well. Everything works fine with Gmail but not my web host. My gut says it's something somewhere within the computer. Hosts files, etc. I don't know. What convinces me of this is that I had my friend set up my email account on his mac and everything worked as normal. He was able to send and receive, yet I still couldn't.
Any ideas? I wanted to ask before I was forced to reistall the OS.
Apple has had me delete the mail folder in Library, delete the plist file, etc. This has to be somewhere else.
Thanks in advance for any tips, help or guidance.

Same exact problem for me! I can send through my SMTP server with no issues from my iPod Touch & Windows devices but on both iMacs (Mail 4.2 (1077)) I cannot send.
Have been on the phone multiple times with my ISP but no luck. Have tried hard setting ports, turning on SSL, deleting and recreating the account, verifying my password isn't locked and nothing.
There is no other explanation with the other devices working. This must be a client issue.

  • Unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3 on Mac Book Pro

I am unable to receive gmail through apple's mail app 4.3, on my MacBook Pro although I can receive my email on the gmail web site. *I can send email through Mail with no problems I just can't receive any e-mail in Mail.* Recently I got a message that my user name or password was incorrect. I made sure the information was correct but still I can't receive any e-mail in Mail. Could somebody please help me?
Here are the settings. Are they correct?
    Account Type: Gmail IMAP
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com

I had the same problem. The unlocking mentioned above worked for me. Right now mail.app is downloading the messages.
I've also on other message boards found a link for correct setup: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/howto_setup_gmail_imap_andmail.app1/
The key here is to go to labs and enable advanced IMAP settings.
I'm not cheering yet if I hover over the folders / labels that are synced I get de message "Unable to open "foldername""

  • Odd gmail behaviour when using mail.app

    Hello there,
Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, I've been experiencing odd behaviour when sending messages from my gmail account in mail.app. I send a message and up to ten copies of the message appear in mail.app's trash.

    many thanks,
    Chidi

They are both working on the iPad. How do I get the non working account back on my iPhone?

  • How do you mark a message as spam when your mail comes from gmail via OS X Mail.app?

How do you mark a message as spam when your mail comes from gmail via OS X Mail.app?
I use IMAP to get Gmail. I seem to remember seeing a "[Gmail]/Spam" IMAP folder in previous versions of the app, but that's not visible any more.
Without this, I have to log on to the web-based Gmail to mark messages as spam, that's a productivity killer.

right mouse click on a message and select Mark as Junk Mail

  • GMail and the Apple Mail app

The Apple Mail app will occasionally throw out an error about being unable to use the SMTP server (GMail hosted).  When this happens, mail is essentially useless.  The 'Quit' option is grayed out in the menu and I have to go in via the terminal to get the PID and kill the app.  This didn't happen when we were on Verizon email.  I created GMail accounts for my family about a year back and it's been happening ever since - not often, but about once a month.
One theory I have:  when I'm at work, I'll check our home GMail from the web interface.  If my wife is at home checking email with the Apple app, I wonder if we are running into some kind of contention issue.
    Anyone else seen this?
    Thanks for your help.

  • How I solved issues with Mail.app and Spotlight

Even though my upgrade from Tiger 10.4.10 to Leopard was painless, the new OS X did have a few issues that had bothered me:
*Mail.app: * Every now and then, the app would behave like on its first startup, saying it needs to import my mail before I can work with it. What's more, at times I've had the phenomen that messages would appear empty on the preview pane and sometimes even when being opened.
*Spotlight: * Even though I let the indexing finish on the first day of working under Leopard, every now and then it seemed to start all over. First, I thought it's the NAS being indexed but it just went on to restart indexing each time I thought I had let it finish.
*Free disk space: * I tried to bring the usage of my homedirectory down so I would have enough free disk space to switch FileVault off and then back on so I could start using TimeMachine. But whatever I did, the free disk space just wouuldn't inrease - it just stayed the same (yes, I did let the system recover space on shutdown).
The *free disk space* issue made me think there was a problem with my disk but repeated runs with the Disk Utility yielded nothing...not for about a month. Yesterday I got some warnings about 'damaged but not repaired' but according to an Apple doc those could be safely ignored.
Somebody suggested to apply the combo update for 10.5.1 as that could solve some issues so I went ahead - after all, the update had already been applied earlier so just re-installing wouldn't hurt much, right?
    Wrong.
The install of the combo update went smoothly, FileVault recovered some space on shutdown but upon restart I couldn't log in anymore: My homedirectory was damaged. The friendly OS X Leopard offered to repair it but soon later reported back that it failed doing so.
Now, to cut a long story short - deleting the affected user's account and using a different user on the same machine (without FileVault) solved any issues I've had. Mail now works like a charm (despite 40k+ messages with attachments), spotlight doesn't restart all it's indexing and disk space is shown correctly again. Also the odd corrupt file copy I had experienced occasionally (especially with large files) was gone.
My advise to anyone who didn't de-activate FileVault under Tiger to make the switch to Leopard: Even if you think it worked, switch it off and let Leopard set it up again. You may think things went right...but the above shows that there may be issues with it that you may blame other apps for...but they're probably not guilty at all.
I don't think the combo update actually caused FileVault to turn corrupt, it was just what broke the camel's neck. While it's no fun to lose your homedirectory, I'm glad the underlying issue finally came to light.

Thanks to this thread, it's been solved.

  • Weird Line Spacing Issue in Mail App and iChat

All of the sudden, all of the lines of text in my mail app and ichat are all bunched up. It's impossible to read the content. Maybe my baby son pressed something but the font is tiny and illegible. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
    Thanks

    Hello Darryn,
I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your Mac. If you are seeing an unusual bunching or overlapping of text in multiple applications, it can often be due to a font issue. You may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful, including one possible specific instance which may result in similar issues:

Also, I am getting sandboxd warnings that are Mail preference related....
I am guessing that the preferences access error that the sandboxd is having is related but who knows...

I think this is an issue with the phone's proximity sensor (the one that turns the screen off when you hold it up to your ear). It's a bug that seems to occur when you switch to another app (any app) while still on a phone call. You'll notice in Messages that the screen goes dark when you move your thumb over the earpiece/iSight camera, but not when you move your other thumb.
Simplest solution is to force-quit the Messages app (double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app). The problem should resolve itself when you restart Messages.

  • Gmail constantly disappearing in mail.app

Ever since Mountain Lion, I've had problems with my default gmai account.  All email is not visible and there is an arroow that appears next to the account.  If I take the account offline, then back online, the email will appear for a short time then disappear again.  I only have this problem with my @gmail account.  I have several Google Apps accounts that have a @mydomainname address and they all work fine.  The server settings are the same for all accounts.  This is for mail.app.  I have no problems with the account using Thunderbird, but I do not want to use TB.  THis is accourring on all my Mac devices, Mini, iMac, MacBook Pro.
After taking account offline and back online.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then you might wait for someone else to respond.
First off, be sure to have a backup before doing anything.
    Quit Mail first.
You will then need to get to your Home Library Folder which is hidden. In the Finder, select Go in the menu, then select Go To Folder. Paste this in the box:
    ~/Library
Your Home Library will open in a Finder window. At the top of the window, drag the Folder icon next to Library to the sidebar for quick reference for later.
Note that the Home Folder is desiginated by ~ .
Go the the ~/Containers folder and find the "com.apple.mail" folder. Drag that to the desktop.
Then go to ~/Mail folder/V2 folder. Find the folder of the account you are having trouble with and drag that folder to the desktop.
Then go to ~/Saved Application State folder and move the com.apple.mail folder to the desktop.
Open Mail and see if the problem persists. Note that if anything goes wrong, quit Mail, then those folders can be put back to their original locations and replace any new ones created.

  • IOS5 issue - E-mail app crashes when sending reply. What to do?

It all worked fince since upgrade. Today I tried to reply to an E-mail. When I clicked send button, the whole app crashed back to the home screen. It was still running in the back though. I tried a few more times - after reset - no luck. Help.

turn on your airport mode, then go back to mail app, nav through the mail.
if you don't crash from there, that means it's not your iPhone.
go to your mail browser from computer, and accept invites, delet bounced mail..something like that. then go to your mail app from your iPhone..
I had to accept meeting invites several of them and that take care that.
    Good luck to you all!

  • Photo Browser issue in Mail.app

The Aperture Tutorial mentioned that I can click on the Photo Browser button in the toolbar in Mail. However, the Photo Browser Button in Mail does not exist in my Mail.app. I tried to customize toolbar but did not find such option. They only way is to open the Photo Browser from "Window" in the top menu bar. I mean, it works in the tutorial videos but not in my system. Any way to fix it?
(I am running Mac OS 10.6.2, and Aperture 3)

There is nothing in the east or west lower corner of my compose mail window.
Look in the lower right hand corner of the compose mail window - there you can choose the size
Of course this image size selection is only there where you have an image attached

  • Mutliple gmail imap accounts in Mail.app

I'm trying to set up my fiancée's gmail account in Mail as an imap where I have my own three email accounts set up (one of which is my gmail imap).
Mail won't have it, though all settings are in order per Mail's/Gmail's directions.
Is mail unable to have two different accounts that use the same imap/smtp servers?

I realise this doesn't answer your question as such, but have you considered setting up a separate user account for her (via System Preferences > Accounts) - that way at least neither of you will be able to accidentally delete each others email or send things from the wrong account etc.
