Gmail doesn't receive any new mail; mail activity wheel keeps spinning

Hi all,
I have never had real problems with OSX Mail but since 2 days my Imap gmail account doesn't receive any mails anymore. I already checked the account info several times and they are all ok. Also the connection doctor doesn't detect any problem with either my internet connection or the mail servers I am using. When I use safari to check my mail online, there is no problem. Also, when I use Thunderbird to check the same account (with the same account info) it just works (but I hate Thunderbird!). I use 4 mail accounts, with 2 imap accounts and only the gmail is not working properly. I'm on mail 4.2 and OSX 10.6.2.
I already completely deleted the gmail account and reinstalled it, but the same problem keeps showing up. I also deleted the com.apple.mail.plst and the imap folder in the mail directory but still, after again setting up all my accounts, the gmail account keeps showing the 'fetching new mail' wheel.
I browsed this forum for a solution and found a lot of issues much alike, but not completely the same. Anyway, I hope you have a solution!

I've had similar problems that started about a week about after a system upgrade. I too have tried re-registering/re-indexing mail (by pulling the mail folders out to the desktop). I've run disk utility. I did the permissions first & corrected those, then I did the verify drive (couldn't select repair yet). The drive verification identified several errors & directed I restart on OS X DVD - which I did (after it reinstalled OS X). Then I ran validate drive & it didn't find any issues. However, my mail continues to bog down and give me the spinning wheel. In the past week I have to force quit mail at least 4-5 times a day. The system is only 2 months old & I only have one POP and one IMAP email linked to it. It appears that the IMAP (gmail) is the one causing the problems. I've triple checked the settings (which hadn't changed when the problems started).
I've spent several hours the past week researching all I can in the forums. It appears that this is a common problem with no real solutions.
As a new Mac owner, I'm not impressed so far. I haven't give up hope and it is also possible that it could be due to an unknown error on my part as a novice Mac user. Just the same, though, previous PCs at least lasted more than 2 months.

    Hi I just recently got a Macbook Pro 15.4 inch, and I've been having trouble receiving mail in the Mail app. When I first got the computer I set up Mail to receive messages from my gmail account. At first it seemed to be working as it started importing my mail, filling up my inbox. Most of the mail was really old so deleted it, and then eventually for whatever reason, Mail just stopped importing messages. Now I can't receive any new messages in Mail no matter how hard I try...     I to had problems with Gmail when i first set it up. What type of mail access do you currently have POP or IMAP. On my gmail account i have it set to POP and i found this always worked, please remember that you have to enable POP on the google gmail server. You have many settings in your mail prefs that can effect your incoming mail also, so its best if you goto the excellent google help for pop Gmail at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13275 and try this lot first.

    On very few occasions, when I receive a new e mail, old e mails (from 2+ years ago) show up in the body of the new email (subject line and sender are current, info in body is old deleted e mail)

    I would try the Rebuild command. Your mail database may have been messed up.

  • AIM account doesn't receive any emails sent from my iPhone

    This help question is going to sound odd maybe, but here goes. I just set up an AIM account for my girlfriend so we can use iChat and her webcam. But she wants to use the email portion as well. I receive emails from her on my iPhone BUT she doesn't receive any of the emails that I send back to her from my iPhone.
    They show in the "send" box of my 3 email accounts, they are not AIM accounts btw. They are local isp accounts. If I send them from my MacBook Pro, they are received by her. If I send them from the WEB sites of my isp, she receives them.
    Why not from my iPhone???

    Check the outgoing SMTP server settings for the mail account on your phone and make sure that they are the same as on your laptop. You may need to use several alternative SMTP servers depending on whether you are sending mail via your home wi-fi or via 3G. Ask your ISP for the first one and your mail provider for the second. You can enter multiple SMTP servers on your phone and it will try them in turn.

    Sounds like your friend didn't disable iMessage on his/her iphone before switching.  Have your friend do the following:
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
    Log in if not already logged in.
    Click on "edit products"
    Click on the "x" to the right of his/her old iPhone.
    Click "unregister"
    This should unregister it with the iMessage server, which will allow you to send texts as normal SMS.
    On your iPhone make sure you have Settings>Messages>Send As SMS set to ON.

    I manged to get all my updates downlaoded and on my server, i have currently enabled 133 of 400 updates.
    I have changed my snow leopard machine to point to the internal update server
    But then after a while of checking this displays software Update doesn't have any new software for your computer at this time
    Which is a Lie, because i know there are updates on the server that the computer needs to have.

  • My iTouch doesn't download any new apps?

    My iTouch 32GB, 5th Gen., 7.0.6., doesn't download any new apps... Every time I've tried to download a new free app/game, it asks for my Apple ID password, which is normal, but then it tells me "You've already downloaded this, it will be downloaded at no additional charge", and then the app's "price rectangle" turns into a cloud with an arrow pointing down. I tap it again and it asks for my Apple ID password again, I put my password once again and then it tells me "You've already downloaded this, it will be downloaded at no additional charge" again, but it doesn't download at all. When I try the same with a previously downloaded but deleted App, it downloads it without any issue... What can/should I do?..... Oh, and just another question real quick, my iTouch(same one) keeps deleting and "recovering" all of my notes, contacts, and calendar events at random, kinda scared it will delete my pictures. It only recovers them when I turn it off and and back on in a Wi-Fi /internet connected area, it is connected to iCloud and they(notes, calendar events, reminders, contacts) are "turned on" which kinda scares me. It's last Back Up was today at 3:49AM.

    Try:

    I dont mean to rude. but I have seen the same response to others over the past month.  I have been keeping up w/ check status from the link provided in my order confirmation.  At this point your depts management should be demanding more detailed info on order status.  They have you customer service folks answering these question blindly, wasting your time and mine and ultimately costing verizon money which they will pass along to me and the other millions of customers out there.  If you cannot give me a more detailed answer please escalate this to someone who can.  Thank you.

    i just installed Thunderbird on my new desktop. Windows 8.1 . McAfee internet security.
    It is working except when I am receiving a new email ; and in the process of clicking on the new email ; Thunderbird initially is not responding for 20 to 30 sec; then starts working again . Any recommendations ?

    I am experiencing a problem with mail hanging up when trying to open it on my iMac G5. Force quitting and turning off the computer did not help. The spinning wheel just keeps spinning. My wife has a separate user account on the same computer and her mail works fine. My mail account at mac/me.com is fine. Also, mail works OK on my laptop. A previous entry describing a similar problem by Edz says he got his mail to work but did not say how. I can only hope there is a simple solution to restore mail.

    Quit Mail...
    First I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
    Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

    I use BT yahoo mail as a 'filter' and for accessing my mail while travelling. One of my friends has a gmail.com e-mail address, and his messages never appear in BT yahoo mail. I got back from travelling last week, and found when opening Outlook Express a series of increasingly frantic messages which hadn't appeared in Yahoo mail for over a week since he sent the first one.

    Hello. I got a similar issue. My iTunes 9 and my iPhone 3GS 3.1 works fine, they sync and so on. I got tethering service from my carrier and it worked fine using USB and Bluetooth with my MacBook. I don't know what happened but now it works only with Bluetooth. The ethernet adapter ˜Ethernet Adapter (enX)" - as shown in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756 - is missing.
    I can't find a way to recreate that iPhone adapter. When I try to tether thru USB nothing happens (no blue bar in iPhone), no adapter is recognized/created. When I tether thru Bluetooth everything works fine.
    Does anyone know how to reset iPhone ethernet config in Mac OS? Thank you.
