Gmail Folders (Labels) in Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I do not seem to be having the problems with my Gmail accounts that many others appear to be suffering.
However, since the upgrade, all my Labels in Gmail, which used to be listed in alphabetic order for each Gmail acount, are now listed in Mail in reverse alphabetic order - has anyone elkse experienced this and dioscovered how to correct it?

Hi MartinJJ,
If you are having an issue with Gmail behavior in Mail for Mavericks, you may want to make sure that you have installed the most recent Mail Update:

Hello, have wasted at least four hours trying to fix a really basic problem - it's immensely frustrating, and to be frank I'm at the end of my tether googling for solutions.
I have multiple gmail accounts set up into different filters/folders on my main Gmail - the other accounts forward into them etc.
On my 9700 all emails were shown.
On my Q5 ONLY THE MAIN account gets emails.
    This is despite:
    - Selecting the folders in the folders option
    - Doing all the IMAP settings etc
    - Following every single piece of advice on this forum and crackberry
Please, PLEASE can someone tell me a solutions else I burn my Q5 immediately. Thank you in advance!

The very first question is, are the messages to which filters are being applied also being archived?  If so, they would be bypassing the device inbox and would appear only in the account sub folder(s).  If this is the case, tap the Hub icon (bottom left while in the Hub), and select your main account.  Then tap the down arrow at the top right to show the sub folders (aka Gmail labels). Check one that you know should have messages.
If no messages are there, leave the Hub.  From the home screen, go to Settings > Accounts and select your main Gmail account.Scroll to the very bottom and select "Edit Folder Settings".  Select all, or specific folders where you want the email synced from the Gmail server to your device.  Save and exit.  Depending on how much you're syncing, it may take a while.  If there's a lot of messages, you may want to be on WiFi so you don't use up your data plan.
Give this a try, then report back, please.

  • How do you get notified of Gmail archived labels that skip the inbox with the mail app on iOS devices?

If you are fimiliar with Gmail you know that you are able to set up labels/filters. Well i have my filters set up so when a certain person/company emails me the email gets archived into a certain folder and skips the inbox. This works great for me. This orgnazation method to keep an amazing clean/empty inbox works great. It's just like having a Filing cabinant and inside the filing cabinant you have a folder(label) for each file(email). Below is a sample Gmail that has Archived Labels that have content in each Archived Label that as you can see.. skip the inbox completely regeardless if the message was read or not.
If the Archived Label has a new message in it it will have (1) next to it.
    Ex.
    Client One Folder (23)
    Client Two Folder
    Client Three (2)
    Client Four (5)
Understand how that works? It works great for orginaziaonl reasons..
Here is a photo of what it really looks like. (Info Blurred for security reasons)
On the Gmail end of things this works great if you ask me...only flaw to this is my iOS device won't notify me that i have a new email in my ClientArchived Folder due to the fact that the Mail app preinstalled on the device only checks the inbox for new mail and does NOT check for new mail sent to Archived folders where majority of my mail is set up for orginazional reasons.
I am aware that if i am using my iOS device that i can go to the Mail App and scroll down to account > Gmail > Scroll down and my archived folders for each client are their & shows how many emails are from each client..
but why doesn't it notifty me about this emails that get sent to these organized archived folders in notifcation center?
See the Mail App icon below? Well above it says i have 16 unread emails throughout my Gmail folders/labels.. Why doesn't it give me a red bubble via NC(noticication Center) on the app saying i have 16 unread messages?
My problem isn't that i can't get the emails on the phone.. it's just if i am not expecting an email and someone emails me.. i won't get it until i go and pysically check in the mail account > gmail > archived folder. It's very frustrating seeing as if i like to be quick to respond to emails. Well it's hard to be quick to respond if my phone doesn't notify me about the emails.
Why won't the App notify me when i have emails in folders other than "Inbox"?
Called Apple and talked to a Technician.. He was clueless of a solution.
Does anyone have a fix for this or a work around?
    Any help/input is apperciated!
    -Thanks

my problem exactly. Did you ever figure it out? I had to resort to turning off labels in the web interface for Gmail. Not ideal

  • Gmail folders do not update in Mail

Ever since upgrading to Mavericks my Gmail folders do not update in the Mail app.  I don't have this problem with my iOS devices (iPhone 5 or iPad 3) both running the latest iOS version. Is there a work around.

So i pretty much got ticked at my iphone. Not only was my "sent folder" not updating, the new 2.0 was crashing and hanging all my applications. e-mail photos wont send, got error messesges , at least every application crashed at some point in the last week, even after i did a restore and back-up. SO pretty much i restored to factory out of the box settings and just started as a "new iphone".
as for the whole "sent folder" not updating. I changed the setting to download "Last 200" messeges. Then i kept updating until all 1,000 messeges were downloaded. After that point my iphone would update whenever i sent new messeges. But it would take forever cause it was checking against a 1,000 e-mails for new ones.... SO i give up, i just dumped all my "sent e-mails" to a new folder called "sent archives" ( u can call it whatever u want). I think this is the easiest fix for now.
if i get any more issues.. i'm just gonna go restore my phone back to the software rev before 2.0 came out....

  • Anyone having an issue with the actual saved mail in Gmail folders not showing up in the folders of iMail after update?

After the update to X Mavericks, the Mac I updated first (and set up with iCloud for the first time using my Gmail account) is no longer syncing the mail on iMail with the Gmail folders.  Thus, new mail shows up and syncs fine.  I can also see the folders for saved items moved out of the inbox but no actual mail shows up inside the folders.  Interestingly, if I open a saved mail item using Gmail on Safari, the mail then does show up on iMail.  Also of note, the sync occurred perfectly on my Air after same update.
    Any thoughts?

I agree, and if you have a large amount of mail on the Gmail servers it might take over 24 hours to sync.  I have about 18 GB of mail on Gmail and it took over 24 hours to sync.  I went to Mailbox on the menu bar and forced the sync serval times, but I don't believe that speeded up the process.  I first upgraded my Macbook Air and compared it with my iMac.  There was a big differnce in the Inbox on my Macbook Air for several days.  Now a week after the upgrade, all folders appeat to have synced.  Next week I will probably upgrade my iMac to Mavericks.

If you select one month for mail days to sync, only one month's worth will be synced and available - the last month which will be constantly changing to the most recent 30 days. Select No Limit for Mail Days to Sync.
Show 1000 recent messages is for the selected mailbox only and if there are more than 1000 messages in a mailbox and you have one month for mail days to sync selected, if the last 30 days for the mailbox includes 100 messages, only 100 messages will be available.
Are these additional server stored mailboxes separate mailboxes and what I mean by that is not sub-mailboxes for the Inbox mailbox?
Since you have had this issue with other operating systems, the common denominator is your Hotmail account. Have you contacted Hotmail technical support regarding this issue you have had with other operating systems?
All server stored mailboxes with an Exchange account should be available with the email client used to access the account. If all are not available when accessing the account as an Exchange account with an email client, something is wrong with your setup for these mailboxes at the server level.

  • Missing gmail folders in Mail for Mt. Lion

I moved a lot of email to a gmail account to archive it (originally from MS Exchange), creating mail folders to hold the mail. This worked fine. But on updating to Mt. Lion, I can no longer see any of these folders, only the stock gmail folder (All Mail, Bin, Drafts, Important, Sent Mail, Spam, and Starred). I can see these folders and mail when I look at the account via a browser, but these folders are no longer accessible via Apple Mail. What happened and is there a solution to this?

Tried it. No difference. There are just the stock gmail folders visible. Note that I CREATED the folders and moved the mail using Apple Mail in Lion a couple months ago. It is only since upgrading to Mt. Lion have they been inaccessible.

  • Firefox 10.0 - Google Gmail Folders and Messages no longer work

I'm running Vista Home, on a laptop. This problem started about 4 days ago and no new applications had been downloaded or added prior to this problem occurring. Whenever I try to open a folder of messages within my Google Gmail accounts, the list of messages open briefly and then reduce to a single message only, and all other messages are not accessible. It is not consistent throughout my Gmail folders/messages. It seems very random. But the Gmail folders and messages read fine when I open them in Explorer or Safari. I have always used Firefox with my Gmail until now. If I can uninstall the newer version of Firefox will this correct the problem? If not, is there a solution?

  • Mountain Lion upgrade loses Calendar/gmail folders

Yesterday I updated my Macbook Pro from Snow Leopard, where I had been a Mobile Me user, to Mountain Lion. I see that my Address Book has been migrated to Contacts as expected and syncked to iCloud, but my iCal entries have not been migrated to the new Calendar. Also, the new Mail doesn't let me see my Gmail IMAP folders, although I can see them if I go to Gmail's web site. Is there anything I can do to restore my iCal entries and my Gmail folders?

Uh, okay, I figured out the gmail issue. (There's a "show" button that appears if you hover the mouse pointer in the right spot.) But the calendar issue is still an issue. —KN

  • Wrong counts on unread emails on my gmail folders in Mac Mail

    Hi
I have a tag showing unread emails in my Gmail folders in Mac Mail when I have no mail inside those folders.
Sent Messages 133 and All Messages 244
I have deleted mnessages everywhere and still this count tag appears with same number.
    Pierre

There are two standard protocols for receiving email, POP and IMAP. In the POP (Post Office Protocol) when messages are "read" by your email client (Mail) they are downloaded and stored on the reading computer and deleted from the POP server. When you are using IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) the messages remain on the IMAP server until they are deleted. IMAP was created for exactly the situation you are trying to achieve. For example Apple's iCloud (formerly me.com, formerly mac.com) uses IMAP protocol. So whether I access my email on my Mac, my iPhone, my iPad, or via webmail I have access to all the files in all the various mailboxes automatically because they are all seeing and using the same online mailboxes. If I delete a message on any of the varioius devices it is deleted on all of the various devices.
Whether you can use IMAP protocol or not depends on your email host and whether they have an IMAP server or not. Many ISPs do not offer IMAP because they do not want to bear the expense of the additional disk space required to store the IMAP messages. As I mentioned before Apple's free email service is by default IMAP. Google Mail offers a somewhat non-standard IMAP service. It works with Apple's email client, Mail, but it is just a bit "different".
Personally I resisted using IMAP for years. Largely because I had always used POP and was comfortable with it. Once I got an iPhone and needed to synch my email between my computer and iPhone I realized IMAP was "the only way to go."

  • Mavericks Mail App and Gmail folders

I have installed Mavericks on my MBA.  Now in the mail app, when I drag messages from the inbox to a gmail folder, they leave the inbox.  But if I click off of the inbox and then click back on it - they reappear in the inbox.
    Anyone else having this problem?

This is one of the largest bugs in Mavericks’ Mail app, which affects Gmail accounts and Google Apps email accounts. This used to work just fine in previous versions of OS X, so it is a brand new problem in Mavericks:
Mail can’t delete messages from the Inbox unless Google’s “All Mail” folder is visible in Apple Mail. If you try to delete a message from the inbox, the message only disappears temporarily, then reappears moments later. It seems like Apple Mail never removes the “Inbox” label from the deleted messages, so the messages just keep reappearing back in the Inbox over & over again.
The workaround is not a desirable one: It requires the user to make Google's “All Mail” folder visible to IMAP clients (via Gmail's "Settings>Labels” page). However, this workaround is not desirable because of 2 bigger problems:
    (1) Making the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail will suddenly make dozens of gigabytes of emails start taking up valuable hard drive space, because every single email that has ever been archived on Gmail/Google Apps will suddenly be written to the Mac’s hard drive. This can be a real problem on a machine with a small hard drive, such as the MacBook Air. Hiding the “All Mail” folder prevents these messages from taking up valuable hard drive space.  Not to mention that all of these messages are DUPLICATES OF MESSAGES THAT ALREADY APPEAR in other IMAP folders, so showing the "All Mail" folder in Mail is absolutely pointless.
    (2) Whenever the “All Mail” folder is visible, every new message that comes into the “inbox" also shows up as a new message in the “All Mail” folder as well, so new messages appear like they are coming in twice. Also, users are forced to mark their messages as “read" in two locations: the “Inbox" AND the “All Mail” folder.
The ideal solution would be for Mail to operate how it used to operate: Users should be able to delete messages from the Inbox, without having the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail.
Please report this bug to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback and hopefully they will fix it in a software update soon!

  • Gmail folders disappearing in Mac Mail under Mavericks

    Hello,
We use gmail for our small charity as an email client and mac mail to sync it between all devices.
It has been working well under Mountain Lion.
I have just upgraded to Mavericks and under 'Inbox' a whole series of folders I previously used to catalogue and sort my email have now disappeared. I cannot find where they are or the email that was in them and nicely sorted.
All Mail is showing - have picked this up from other threads.
Why didn't my previously logged folders come over with the upgrade? Can they be found and enabled? If not, how to do go back to Mountain Lion?

  • How can I create a mail folder where my gmail folders are

Hi all, I have Mail with my Gmail account. My 'labels' have appeared as folders in my Mail. That's all great and I've learned how to use them effectively so that they all sync when going back to gmail.
However I cannot create a new 'folder/label' where all the others are. I can only create a new folder as a subfolder and then move it.
Is there a way to create another 'folder/label' where the existing ones are.
See this screenshot, so I'd like to create a folder where 'Adobe' and 'Airmiles' folders are and not as a sub folder of 'Adobe/Airmiles' or of [Google Mail].
Can I do that? I am able to create the folder as a sub folder and then drag and drop where I want it but ideally want to avoid this step.
    Thanks in advance
    Hayley

Not in Mail. If you referring to not having to use the menu, you can click the + sign at the bottom to create new mailboxes. But you still have to fill in the window with location and name. You can right click to create a new mailbox on an existing one, but not in the main account itself and you still have to fill in the info. It would create a sub folder.
You can also try it at the gmail website. There might be shortcuts there.

  • Gmail IMAP Labels Issue

So I'm pretty excited I now have IMAP enabled for my gmail account. However, I don't like the way Mail (or maybe it's gmail) handles sorting my email messages. The gmail labels at the bottom of the left hand panel of Mail show whenever I get a new message AND this message also shows up in my inbox for whatever email account it is in. So if I get two new email messages the badge icon in the dock shows four new messages, which I have to click on in both locations (Inbox and in the corresponding Label folder) to mark as read. I would prefer to use Mail to sort all of various email accounts into folders I set up under "On My Mac" rather than use the labels from gmail. I can't seem to remove the gmail accounts from showing up in the left hand panel of Mail, which would be ideal.

I figured it out. The labels have to have a [Gmail]/ prefix because I've configured that as the IMAP root.

  • All my gmail folders are missing from MAC mail.

I was using a gmail backup account to protect my MAC mail folders from being lost, as has happened before. And now They have all been jacked again.
I have found all the info. on my gmail account but I can not deem to import them back into MAC Mail. (I use MAC OSX 10.9.1)
    I need help.
I have done all I have read about online:
    1. All mail, checked to 'show'
    2. IMAP enabled
    3. POP mail disabled
Still all my folders are on my gmail account listed under labels...and in the left hand side  in the folders area.
All I did to have this happen, is to have a password update, cause my gmail would not sync for some reason, and BOOM. Gone!
